66.Dear Peter,
How is everything going with you I’m writing to apologize to you for not being able to visit you this summer vacation as scheduled.
As you know, a deadly epidemic called COVID-19 is creeping across the world. It is such an infectious disease that more than 4,000,000 people worldwide have got affected. Due to the human-to-human transmission, we are strongly advised to isolate ourselves at home. For this reason, I have to cancel the trip. I’ll rearrange the visit when the epidemic comes to an end.
Wish you good health and an enjoyable holiday.
Yours,
Li Hua
67.After class, I walked to his office, took a deep breath and opened the door. My boss was sitting in his chair with a poker face, gazing at me silently. Anxious and ashamed, I said nothing, wondering if he would fire me right away. He handed me an envelope, which added to my anxiety at that moment. However, my eyes were wide open when I opened it and read the letter. It was not an unemployment letter but a letter with several suggestions about my teaching, one of which was highlighted in red: An educator should respect students’ feelings. Almost immediately, a surge of warmth rose inside me.
Inspired by his advice, I walked toward the classroom, determined to make a change. As the bell rang, I stood on the platform, eyes wandering across the classroom. I cleared my throat and announced, “Boys and girls, let’s begin with what you think about my literature lesson.” Suddenly, a complete silence fell over the class. Each student lifted their head and cast me a puzzled look. Flashing a smile, I encouraged, “Anything you’d like to say is welcome!” At this, a ripple of excitement spread through the classroom. The literature class soon amazingly came to life thanks to their brilliant voices. It was at that time that I fully understood what my boss taught me: respecting the students instead of ignoring them will make a difference.

Text10:
Okay, now for some news about our annual charity auction evening. Unfortunately, we can’t use the Forest Hotel again, as it’s being re-decorated, but we’re very excited about getting into the Park Hotel for the auction this year. It’s located opposite the station. We have an exciting range of things to sell this year, but we’d always welcome more items. The final day is next Thursday.
All money from this year’s events goes towards helping local homeless people. We intend to use the money from the auction to build a new training centre, where homeless people can come to learn new skills. It’ll be next to the existing hotel and you can see the plans in the office. Please give your names to the secretary before the day of the event.
We’ve also got some fantastic items in this year’s auction as usual. But the dinner at the new restaurant — the City Lights is new this year. We’re expecting the most interest in the tickets to The Big Thing, as this fantastic festival is now sold out. We’re also very excited about the day pass to the local adventure park for younger ones. Now then, we have enough people to help with seating, but we are looking for some volunteers to help with the coffee. If you think you can do this, please contact Mr. Baker. We’re sure it’s going to be a huge success.

People love Shakespeare’s vocabulary and creativity. He used more than 15,000 words in this writing! But Bible’s Old Testament only contains 5,642 words. Shakespeare also invented many new terms and phrase.
If someone’s behavior suggested they were not honest and should not be trusted. Shakespeare called them suspicious. If someone was silly and perhaps looked like a fool, Shakespeare found their actions laughable. And for those who offered their opinions on something’s quality, Shakespeare called them critics. Today , for instance, food critics and film critics give their opinions on food and films.
The familiar phrase “break the ice” comes from Shakespeare’s play The Taming of the Shrew. The “ice is broken” when people in a group, who have never met before, begin to talk to each other by doing some activities. More common words were first used by Shakespeare including “road”, “gossip”, “lonely”, “bump” and “hurry”.
Four hundred years after his death, Shakespeare surely lives on, in everyday speech, as he most famous writer of all time.

When I was a kid, my mom set aside some breakfast food for supper every now and then. I remember one night after a long, hard day at work, my mom placed a plate of eggs, sausage, and a plate of extremely burnt biscuits on the table. I waited to see if my dad would get annoyed.
All my dad did was to reach for the biscuits, smile at my mom and ask me how my day at school had been. I don't remember what I told him that night but I do remember watching him add butter and jelly on that ugly burnt biscuit and ate every bite of that thing. He never made a face nor uttered a word about it!
When I rose from the table that evening, I remember hearing my mom apologize to my dad for overcooking the biscuits and I will never forget what he said, “Honey, I love burnt biscuits every now and then."
Later that night, I went to say good night to my daddy, and I wondered if he really liked his biscuits burnt. He wrapped me up in his arms and said gently, "Your mom put in a hard day at work today and she is really tired. Besides, a little burnt biscuit never hurt anyone!
As I have grown older, I've thought about that many times. Life is full of imperfect things and imperfect people. Learning to accept each other's faults and choosing to celebrate each other's differences contribute to a healthy, growing, and lasting relationship. We could extend this philosophy to any relationship, such as a husband-wife, parent-child, or friendship. Don't put the key to your happiness in someone else's pocket. Keep it in your own. So, please pass me a biscuit, and yes, the burnt one will do just fine.

A.He set it aside for breakfast. B.He ate butter and jelly instead.

A.Show understanding to imperfect things. B.Ask the children to respect their parents.
C.Enjoy the over-cooked biscuits willingly. D.Make important decisions on your own.
31.In which section of a magazine may this passage appear
A.History and culture. B.Family and relationship.
C.Cuisine and health. D.Entertainment and sports.

Imagine being able to pop to your local park and pick some tomatoes, potatoes or even bananas to take home for dinner. Sounds too good to be true, right For residents of Andernach, German, it’s not just a dream—it’s their reality.
In 2010, Andernach began its edible(可食用的)city project, planting 101 varieties of tomatoes in public green spaces around the city centre. Its 30,000 residents are free to help themselves to whatever grows, as are any other visitors. The town’s motto of sorts is “Picking is encouraged—help yourself!” Every year a new type of plant is highlighted. In 2011, 100 types of beans were planted, while 2012saw the introduction of 20 onion varieties.
It’s a community effort, as local citizens are encouraged to help plant and maintain the gardens. This offers an opportunity to socialise as well as to learn about planting, cultivating and harvesting food.
An Andernach resident spoke to DW,“I often drop by to pick some herbs that I’m missing at home. Everything is easily accessible. There aren’t any fences. You just take what you need. The only thing is that you have to be quick once the fruits are ripe or they’ll all be gone!”
Andernach may have been the first in German, but it isn’t the only edible city. It’s part of the Edible Cities Network, a project funded by European Union to connect green urban foot initiatives around the world. Other cities include Carthage in Tunisia, Havana in Cuba and Sempeter-Vrtojba in Slovenia. In February 2022, the first Edible Cities Network Conference took place. Dr Ina Saumel, principal investigator of the Edible Cities Network, called it “a unique opportunity to invite researchers of edible city solutions and practitioners to the same table.”
Ultimately, the Edible Cities Network aims to give people “greener, more edible and, above all, more livable cities.” It is a response to the pressures of global climate change, and a significant cause full of hope.
32.What can residents do in public green spaces according to the edible city project
A.Sell the produce they grow there. B.Learn knowledge about planting.
C.Grow whatever plant as they like. D.Pay to pick some vegetables there.
33.Which words can best describe the edible city project in Andernach
A.Novel and popular. B.Creative and costly.
C.Common and fundamental. D.Rare and unacceptable.
34.What can we know about the Edible Cities Network from Dr Ina Saumel’s words
A.Andernach is the only city to carry it out.
B.European Union originally established it.
C.It helps combine theories with practices.
D.It invites people to share meals together.
35.What is the purpose of the Edible Cities Network
A.To help residents relieve their pressure.
B.To involve residents in urban planting.
C.To increase the produce supply in cities.
D.To create environmentally friendly cities.

In recent years, more Chinese students have been choosing art school as their first choice when applying for universities overseas, according to the Report on Chinese Students’ Overseas Study in 2018. Unless the school requires that only finished work be included in your portfolio, you should include images that reflect the progress of your work. 39 It gives admissions officers insight into the thought that has gone into the work.
Make sure that your work shows your true talent. 40 Remember never try to make up some merits, which will in turn be a mirror of your dishonesty. However, it is always helpful to look at samples of other art portfolios to see their approach.

C.Be proud of what you submit and your own strengths.

After filling out 50 applications, going through four interviews, and winning one offer, I took what I could get -a teaching job in what I considered a distant wild area: western New Jersey. My characteristic optimism was alive only when I reminded myself that I would be doing what I had wanted to do since I was 14-teaching English.
School started, I was teaching English. I worked hard, only taking time off to eat and sleep. And then there was my sixth-grade class—17 boys and five girls who were only six years younger than me. I had a problem long before I knew it. I was struggling in my work as a young idealistic (理想主义的) teacher. I wanted to make literature come alive and to promote a love of the written word. The students wanted to throw spitballs (纸团) and whisper dirty words in the back of the room.
In college I had been taught that a successful educator should ignore bad behavior. So I did, confident that, as the textbook had said, the bad behavior would disappear as I gave my students positive attention. It sounded reasonable, but the text obviously ignored the fact that humans, particularly teenagers, rarely seem reasonable. By the time my boss, who was a taskmaster known to be the strictest, most demanding and quickest to fire inexperienced teachers, came into the classroom to observe me, the students exhibited very little good behavior to praise.
My boss sat in the back of the room. The boys in the class were making animal noises, hitting each other while the girls filed (锉) their nails or read magazines. I just pretended it all wasn’t happening, and went on lecturing and tried to ask some inspiring questions. My boss, sitting in the back of the room, seemed to be growing bigger and bigger. After 20 minutes, he left silently. Visions of unemployment marched before my eyes. I felt mildly proud that I got through the rest of class without crying, but at my next free period, I had to face him.
Paragraph 1:
After class, I walked to his office, took a deep breath and opened the door.
_____________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________
Paragraph 2:
Inspired by his advice, I walked toward the classroom, determined to make a change.
