If you have extra time, why not consider community service and putting extra shine on your resume (简历) Check out the following projects for excellent volunteer chances that are open to everyone, even if you are a green hand and know little about it.
National Parks
Volunteering at a national park means more than just cleaning up. If you love history and nature, you can work at attractive historical sites. If you’re in New York, consider Alcatraz Island, which is part of the Golden Gate National Recreation Area in California. It would be a forever talking point at parties.
YMCA
At the YMCA, you can volunteer to help both children and adults, improve your leadership skills by coaching a sports team, or pick up some valuable teaching experience by giving literacy (文学) courses. Check your local YMCA’s website, or simply walk in and introduce yourself to find if there are any needed positions.
Retirement (退休) Homes
People after retirement love exciting new lectures to teach them something fun, so always be sure to be creative and develop a program that shows off your skills to make them laugh. If you are good at public speaking, or want to get better at it, ask to recite some famous historical speeches or poems.
Habitat for Humanity
Habitat for Humanity offers different kinds of local volunteer opportunities. If you want to develop experience in home repair and building maintenance (维修) and fixing, check out its A Brush With Kindness campaign or Let Women Build program, designed to help women learn construction and building skills. Your experience can also help to develop team-building and leadership ability — plus, you might finally find yourself able to remodel your own home.

After a year at sea, 16-year-old Laura Decker can finally say, “Job pulled off!” Last month, she finished a daring trip around the world aboard her 38-foot boat, Guppy. Decker, who is from the Netherlands, traveled more than 30,000 miles all by herself. She is the youngest person ever to sail around the globe alone.
Decker had wanted to take on this challenge when she was even younger. She first tried to set sail at the age of 13, but a court (法院) in the Netherlands stopped her. They said that she was too young to make such a risky trip by herself. But Decker insisted she had the sailing skills and patience of an adult sailor.
She finally took off on January 20, 2011. During her trip, Decker battled loneliness, storms, and worries about pirates. But she also got to surf, scuba dive, and started a new hobby: playing the flute. Although Decker didn’t spend all of her time at sea — she stopped at ports (港口) along the way — she did spend her 16th birthday on the open ocean. To celebrate, she ate doughnuts for breakfast.
But Decker didn’t sail into the record books. Guinness World Records and the World Sailing Speed Record Council no longer recognize records for “youngest” sailors. They dropped the official recognition in 2009 ta discourage children from trying such dangerous feats (壮举). But that didn’t stop Decker, who was born on a yacht during a seven-year world travel at sea undertaken by her parents.
Decker doesn’t mind that she won’t hold an official record. She says it was a personal goal, and she is happy she achieved it.
“I am not feeling down at all that Guinness World Record won’t recognize my achievement.” Decker wrote on her website. “I did not start on my trip to achieve any record… I did it just for myself.”
4. What does the underlined phrase “pulled off” in Paragraph I mean
A. Failed. B. Completed. C. Continued. D. Started.
5. Why was Decker not allowed to sail at the age of 13
A. Because people were concerned about her safety.
B. Because she didn’t learn any sailing skills well.
C. Because she had to continue her study at school.
D. Because she didn’t have enough patience for long trips.
6. No records for youngest sailors were set up in order to ________.
A. set a higher sailing standard for teen sailors
B. stop children entering Guinness World Records
C. encourage parents to sail with their children
D. prevent children making dangerous travels
7. What could be the best title for this passage
A. A New Guinness World Record in Sailing
B. A New Sailing Standard for Teen Sailors
C. A Teen Girl Sailing Alone Around the World
D. The Youngest Sailor in Guinness World Records
【答案】4. B 5. A 6. D 7. C

Failed失败;B. Completed完成;C. Continued继续;D. Started开始。故选B项。
【5题详解】
细节理解题。根据第二段的“She first tried to set sail at the age of 13, but a court (法院) in the Netherlands stopped her. They said that she was too young to make such a risky trip by herself. ( 13岁时,她第一次尝试起航,但荷兰一家法院阻止了她。他们说她太年轻了,不能独自做这样冒险的旅行)”可知,人们担心她的安全,认为她太小,所以阻止了她冒险。故选A项。
【6题详解】
细节理解题。根据第四段中“They dropped the official recognition in 2009 ta discourage children from trying such dangerous feats (壮举). (他们在2009年放弃了官方的认可,以阻止孩子们尝试这种危险的行为。)”可知,他们放弃这一类别的原因是为了阳止孩子们冒险。故选D项。
【7题详解】
主旨大意题。通读全文,尤其是根据第一段“After a year at sea, 16-year-old Laura Decker can finally say, “Job pulled off!” Last month, she finished a daring trip around the world aboard her 38-foot boat, Guppy. Decker, who is from the Netherlands, traveled more than 30,000 miles all by herself. She is the youngest person ever to sail around the globe alone. (在海上漂泊了一年之后,16岁的劳拉·德克尔终于可以说:“约伯成功了!”上个月,她乘坐她的38英尺长的船Guppy完成了一次大胆的环球旅行。德克尔来自荷兰,她独自旅行了3万多英里。她是有史以来独自环球航行最年轻的人。)”可知,本文主要介绍了16岁的少女Laura Dekker独自环球航行的经历。根据第四段中“Guinness World Records and the World Sailing Speed Record Council no longer recognize records for “youngest” sailors. (吉尼斯世界纪录和世界航行速度记录委员会不再承认“最年轻”水手的记录。)”可知,Dkker的航行纪录不会被吉尼斯认可,所以本文主旨与吉尼斯纪录无关。因此推断C项“A Teen Girl Sailing Alone Around the World (一个独自驾船环游世界的女孩)”为最佳标题。故选C项。

No two snowflakes (雪花) are the same. Who first discovered the fact Wilson Bentley, a farmer from Vermont, in 1885 became the first person to successfully photograph a snowflake. After years of attempts and errors, Bentley caught the details of snowflakes using a microscope (显微镜) connected to his camera. He photographed more than 5,000 snowflakes during his lifetime, never finding any two of them exactly the same.
He had the mind of a scientist and the soul of a poet. He wrote many articles for magazines like National Geographic. He kept weather records of every photograph. The theories that he developed about how snowflakes formed were proven true.
Bentley never had formal education. His mother had been a schoolteacher before her marriage, so she taught Wilson at home. He seemed to be smarter than most kids of his age. When he was 15, his mother gave him an old microscope from her teaching days. The first time he looked at a snowflake under it, he was attracted.
It wasn’t easy, however, to get those snowflakes on camera. It took almost three years for Bentley to work out how to successfully photograph one—which he did a month to his 20th birthday. The first difficult thing was figuring out how to connect the microscope to the camera. And then there was the greatest challenge of getting each snowflake photographed before it melted (融化). He worked in an unheated room.
Bentley would go outside and try to catch falling snowflakes. He would wear heavy gloves so the heat from his hands wouldn’t transfer over. He would hold his breath as he used a small stick to move the snow under the cold microscope. He would press the snowflakes down to the glass with a turkey feather (羽毛). The light would come from only a little window.
Bentley died in 1931 at the age of 66, but his creative images helped pave the way for generations of scientific photographers. His images can also be found on prints, jewelry and Christmas decorations. A children’s book about him won the Caldecott Medal in 1909.
8. How did Bentley study the snowflakes
A. By printing snowflakes on paper. B. By drawing snowflakes in pencil.
C. By taking pictures of snowflakes. D. By observing snowflakes in the lab
9. Which of the following can best describe Bentley
A. Calm and never losing heart. B. Clever and proud.
C. Talented and determined. D. Brave and warm-hearted.
10. What was the most difficult for Bentley’s study
A. Getting a good quality microscope.
B. Finding enough snow in its early form.
C Fitting the microscope onto the camera.
D. Photographing snow before they disappeared.
11. What is the last paragraph mainly about
A. Bentley’s scientific spirit. B. The use of Bentley’s images.
C. Bentley’s inspiration to children. D. Bentley’s influence on the world.
【答案】8. C 9. C 10. D 11. D

The entire country struggled with the unprecedented heat of the July 2022 heatwave, but for the disabled, the heat hit even harder. The climate crisis is a threat to everyone’s health, but according to a report in 2021, people with disabilities are more delicate to the extreme weather events and natural disasters that result from the climate crisis.
Professor Kristie Ebi of the Centre for Health and the Global at the University of Washington, described the topic of heatwaves and disabled people as being an important issue. “Groups at higher risk during periods of high temperature include people with chronic (慢性的) medical conditions, people who take certain medications that can reduce the ability of the body to sweat, and the “disabled”, notes Ebi, going on to describe the different threats that heatwaves pose for different types of disabilities. Ebi notes the difficulty people with mobility issues or blindness may have with accessing services, such as cooling shelters, Ebi also comments on the importance of making messaging on the dangers of high temperatures accessible to those with learning disabilities or to deaf people. “Some studies suggest higher rates of suicide and other mental health issues during heatwaves, requiring targeted help for those with mental disabilities,” she added.
Ailsa Speak, a disability and lifestyle blogger, experiences uncontrollable movements in the heat due to her cerebral palsy (脑瘫). “As you can imagine, when my involuntary movements increase, I get even hotter. It’s just a painful circle really.”
In the absence of a concrete set of plans for people with disabilities during the climate crisis and extreme weather events, people with disabilities continue to be at increased risk of heat-related disease.
To prevent future death and destruction, the Climate Change Committee (CCC), an independent organization tackling climate change, advocates for adaptation planning, as the temperature is set to rise further due to the climate crisis and global warming. The CCC’s 2022 report on the health risks of overheating offers adaptation options to the government to ensure that buildings are fit for future climate change. Nevertheless, the publication does not offer specific advice about people with disabilities and overheating, which thus remains to be discussed promptly and thoroughly.
12. Which of the following would Professor Ebi most probably agree with
A. Heatwaves make people with chronic diseases suffer most
B. The mentally disabled have no access to cooling shelter
C. Mobility disability contributes to higher risk of suicide in the heatwaves
D. Some disabled people are ill-informed about the risks of heatwaves
13. Why does the author mention Ailsa Speak
A. To share a disabled blogger’s painful life
B. To show what a terrible disease cerebral palsy is
C. To illustrate the trouble the disabled have in the heat
D. To prove the never-before-seen highs in temperature
14. The author’s purpose of writing this passage is to
A. suggest methods of helping the disabled in heatwaves
B. stress the urgent need to care for the disabled in the heat
C. tell readers how severe the July 2022 heatwave was
D. introduce adaptation alternatives for future buildings
15. Where does this passage probably come from
A. The newspaper. B. A fiction novel C. A biography D. A chemical paper
【答案】12. D 13. C 14. B 15. A

In the absence of a concrete set of plans for people with disabilities during the climate crisis and extreme weather events people with disabilities continue to be at increased risk of heat-related disease.

D. To prove the never-before-seen highs in temperature
14. The author’s purpose of writing this passage is to
A. suggest methods of helping the disabled in heatwaves
B. stress the urgent need to care for the disabled in the heat
C. tell readers how severe the July 2022 heatwave was
D. introduce adaptation alternatives for future buildings
