McMaster student Lianna Genovese, who invented a device called Guided Hands that allows people with limited hand movement to draw, write and paint, has been chosen as Canada’s national winner of the 2021 James Dyson Award.
Genovese was only 18 years old when she created the first version of the aided device in a course that introduces students to engineering design in the biomedical engineering fields. As part of the design projects for that first-year course, students worked with customers in the community. Genovese met Elissa, a woman living with dystopia. “Elissa mentioned that she had a hard time doing the buttons on her shirt, a hard time writing, but one thing that really stood out to me was that she had a really difficult time painting and that she was a talented painter,” Genovese said. “I wanted to help give her back her passion and improve her quality of life.”
Genovese said she saw a way that a device could assist. Her design was made on the principle of a 3D printer with a person’s hand as the nozzle (喷嘴). The device’s unique sliding mechanical device guides hand movements in all directions when the user grasps a handpiece (手持件) tailored to their level of hand impairment (损伤). The handpiece can hold a variety of writing tools such as pens, pencils, paintbrushes, markers, etc. Genovese had a list of people testing the first few versions. Finally. she found one that worked. “Elissa loved it and she was able to paint again,” she said.
“Then I visited every single hospital, clinic, nursing home and retirement home in my city, and introduced it to over 150 patients and doctors,” Genovese said. One girl named Bella, who suffered cerebral palsy, tried the device out. “As soon as she began painting, the widest smile spread across her face. She turned to her mom and said, ‘Mom, I want one.’ At that moment, I realized this is an invention that can change the lives of so many people,” Genovese said.
4. What did Genovese want to do after she met Elissa
A. Learn drawing from Elissa. B. Develop a cure for Elissa’s disease.
C. Find a way for Elissa to draw again. D. Recommend a suitable course for Elissa.
5. What do we know about Genovese’s invention from Paragraph 3
A. It has a couple of nozzles. B. It is a small-sized 3D printer.
C. It is a cure for rare diseases. D. It has a customer-made handpiece.
6. How did Genovese feel about Bella’s words
A. Encouraged. B. Confused. C. Curious. D. Sympathetic.
7. What can be the best title for the text
A. McMaster student lends a hand to those with hand impairment
B. McMaster student is born to be a business-minded person
C. McMaster student transforms passion into profession
D. McMaster student gives inspiration to inventors
C
Driving and flying are huge contributors to carbon emissions (排放) and climate change. So Google is helping users make more wise decisions about how they travel. In addition to showing drivers the fastest way to get to their destination, Google Maps will now show the route that’s the most fuel-efficient.
To provide the new feature, Google used data from the National Renewable Energy Laboratory, which estimates that eco-friendly routing has the potential to prevent more than one million tons of carbon emissions from entering the atmosphere per year. That’s equal to removing 200,000 cars from the road, Google claims.
On the Google Maps app, the most fuel-efficient route will be displayed with a small green leaf next to it. The route option will include information about how long the trip will take and how much fuel the driver could save.
It’s no secret that biking is a more eco-friendly travel option than driving, and the use of biking directions on Maps has increased by as much as 98% over the past year, according to Google. The tech company is focusing on attracting bike riders with a new feature called “lite navigation (导航)”. This feature is being introduced after Google heard from cyclists who were sick of following turn-by-turn directions on their phones. Cyclists don’t look at their phones for most of the ride, after all. With lite navigation, bike riders will be able to see details about their route without needing to keep their screen on or follow turn-by-turn navigation. Cyclists will also be able to track their trip progress and see their ETA (estimated time of arrival) updated in real time.
Moreover, Google Flights users will be able to see carbon emission estimates for nearly every flight in the search results. The estimates are “flight-specific” and “seat-specific”, Google said. “Newer aircraft are generally less polluting than older pared with economy-class seats, emissions increase for first-class seats because they take up more space and account for a larger share of total emissions,” Google added.
8 What do the data in paragraph 2 show
A. The seriousness of climate change. B. The potential of using renewable energy.
C. The significance of Google’s new feature. D. The necessity of removing cars from the road.
9. What does a green leaf on Google Maps indicate
A. The most eco-friendly route. B. The most beautiful route.
C. The most chosen route. D. The shortest route.
10. What do we know about lite navigation
A. It informs bikers of their speed in real time.
B. It can work with the phone’s screen off.
C. It receives favorable reviews from 98% of bikers.
D. It encourages bikers to follow turn-by-turn directions.
11. Who may contribute the most carbon emissions
A. Economy-class passengers on new planes. B. Economy-class passengers on old planes.
C First-class passengers on new planes. D. First-class passengers on old planes.

On paper, Joyxee Island sounds like an attractive vacation accommodation. Located in Isla Mujeres Bay, a short distance from the Mexican Caribbean hot spot of Cancun, this private island features swimming ponds, Internet access, a fully functioning bathroom, a rainwater collection system, private beach space, solar power, a three-story home and a total area of 750 square meters.
The island, owned by British artist Richart Sowa, isn’t an island at all, at least not in the typical sense. Joyxee is floating (漂浮) on a man-made base of about 150,000 air-filled bottles held inside large nets. This floating bottom layer is covered with sand and soil. The roots from the island’s mangrove (红树林植物) forest have grown through these nets, providing natural structural strength. Creating this island has been a long process. Joyxee began as a small raft, but has grown into a space that’s large enough to allow Sowa to live a mostly self-sufficient lifestyle.
Joyxee is not Sowa’s first try at a plastic-bottle island. Sowa built Spiral Island on Mexico’s Caribbean coast in the late 1990s. Spiral did not survive Hurricane Emily, though, which struck the Caribbean in 2005. Fortunately, some of the bottle-filled nets were preserved. Sowa used these re-recycled bottles to start Joyxee with the help of local environmentalists who wanted to support his eco-island idea. He decided to place it inside a lagoon (濒海湖) in Isla Mujeres Bay to protect Joyxee from suffering the same misfortune as Spiral Island.
While the media have covered the island as a novelty, Sowa’s statements on his website show that he thinks that his island constructions could be the start of something bigger. “Environmentally, the island is an example of a wind-, solar- and wave-powered living space. Furthermore, the mangroves can clean the air by absorbing CO2. And because such islands are floating, they would not be affected by rising sea levels, flooding or other disasters.” Sowa welcomes guests to Joyxee and also offers tours. For tours, including a return trip to the shore, he requests a “donation of S5 or more.”
12. What do we know about Joyxee
A. It offers good living facilities. B. It was designed by volunteers.
C. It was built within a short period. D. It borders the Mexican city of Cancun.
13. What role does Joyxee’s mangrove forest play
A. Adjust the temperatures of the island.
B. Serve as the islanders’ food sources.
C. Provide structural support for the island.
D. Act as the island’s rainwater collection system.
14. What does the underlined part “the same misfortune” in paragraph 3 refer to
A. Being destroyed by a hurricane. B. Being short of bottle-filled nets.
C. Being criticized by environmentalists. D. Being separated from land by a lagoon.
15. Why does Sowa make the statements on his website
A To attract more artists. B. To show off his island.
C. To promote the eco-island idea. D. To draw the media’s attention.

Actively offer your ideas, as most brands will require it anyway.

Most boys coming to our ranch (大牧场) were living around animals for the first time. Sent by educational systems, they were boys in trouble; they had no family, lacked love, often broke the rules, and were lonely. Our ranch created a “boy-horse communication program” for them, hoping to heal their broken spirits and help them behave well through their communication with horses. I was the program’s head.
15-year-old Martin was a new arrival. He appeared cold and easily angry and had no experience with horses. He seemed to consider a horse only a vehicle for speed and thrills. He always pushed his way to the front of the line every day, knocking down smaller children to get on the horse. And then he started moving fast. We tried to communicate with him, but he only cared about his excitement.
One morning, when I was upset about Martin’s behavior in my office, one worker told me that a female horse was ill. Then, I ran to its stable (马), and within an hour she was dead. We felt sad about her and also concerned about the young baby she had recently delivered (分娩). The baby horse’s first need was to be fed.
We prepared some milk in a bottle and offered it to her. But she wouldn’t accept the bottle. We had to put our hands in the milk and let her suck (吮吸) the milk off our fingers. It was a painfully slow method of feeding, but we had no choice if we wanted the baby horse to survive.
At that moment, Martin finished his daily riding and found us. Pushing his way through the crowd of kids who were watching us feed the baby horse, he got to the front, shouting, “I want to feed it!”
After I showed Martin how to do it, he put his hand in the milk and then put his fingers towards the horse’s mouth. When the baby horse closed her mouth around his fingers, Martin was surprised and drew back, shouting, “Hey, it bit me!” But knowing the little horse wanted more food, he immediately re-wet his hand.
注意:
1. 续写词数应为150词左右;
2. 请在答题卡相应位置作答。
And he gently put his fingers near her mouth.

Watching the horse sleep, Martin cried, “I’ll be her mom and care for her.”

Her design was made on the principle of a 3D printer, with a person’s hand as the nozzle (喷嘴).

8. What do the data in paragraph 2 show
C. First-class passengers on new planes. D. First-class passengers on old planes.
【答案】8. C 9. A 10. B 11. D

A. To attract more artists. B. To show off his island.
C. To promote the eco-island idea. D. To draw the media’s attention.
【答案】12. A 13. C 14. A 15. C

第二节 (满分25 分)
47. 阅读下面材料,,根据其内容和所给段落开头语续写两段,使其构成一篇完整的短文。
注意:
1. 续写词数应为150词左右;

And he gently put his fingers near her mouth.

Watching the horse sleep, Martin cried, “I’ll be her mom and care for her.”
___________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________
【答案】And he gently put his fingers near her mouth. Again the horse sucked greedily. This time, Martin’s face relaxed into a smile of pure pleasure. Again and again, he put his hand in the milk and gave it to the horse. “She’s so hungry,” he said softly. Eventually, the horse had enough milk and fell into a deep sleep. “What happened to her ” Martin asked me. I told him that she had lost her mom and needed someone to care for her. Then we talked about how it felt to lose a mother.
Watching the horse sleep, Martin cried, “I’ll be her mom and care for her.” Touched, I nodded. He came every day to feed the baby horse and clean her stable. He brushed her and played with her. They had a wild game where they took turns chasing each other, bringing fun and love to each other. Gradually, Martin’s eyes had more tenderness, and he began caring for little boys there, teaching them to ride horses. I was glad about Martin’s change. And this was just one story here that showed how our program could heal a broken spirit.
