A
It’s getting close to midnight, and close to my destination—mile marker 133 on Alaska’s Glenn Highway, where I’m on the road to realize a lifelong dream. I’m going to see the northern lights.
I am Scott’s only customer tonight, but whether it’s one person or a bridal party from Japan, the professional photographer and videographer loves to come put here to witness one of nature’s most spectacular shows — and to share it with others. “I can’t tell you how much joy I get from seeing the smile on people’s faces. That’s worth it right there. That’s the reason why I do tours,” he says.
I emerge from the van into minus 6 degrees. A bazillion stars sparkle, and the Milky Way pours overhead. What looks like a gray stream of cloud arches low over the horizon. “That’s it!” says Scott. Really That’s it I spent 13 hours in planes and airports, and then drove 2.5 hours to see a gray belt “Patience,” he says. “It will get better. Wait till 2 am. That’s usually the best time.”
Aurora (极光) tourism is combined with winter activities like ice fishing, snow machine rides, and hot springs. As aurora guides and scientists will tell you, there’s no guarantee of a sighting. But Fairbanks is a statistically good bet because of its northern location and freedom from coastal clouds, which can be a challenge for Anchorage. Travelers are recommended to put aside at least three nights to improve your chances of viewing, with the idea that you’ll be up much of the night each time.
Each time he wakes me and I step outside, it appears more glorious. At first, a fuzz the size of a honeydew floats along the horizon. Another time, a broad green line stretches across the sky, followed by a short tail. “Do you see the red ” Scott asks. He has me look through his camera. It can see more color than the naked eye. Finally, as if playing a visual symphonic tune, a giant line of phosphorous (发磷光的) green seems to swoop down to the treetops and dollop them with a curlicue swirl. I’m smiling inside and out. We can go now.
21.What makes Scott like to do aurora tourism
A.The chance to take spectacular photos. B.The happiness of tourists.
C.The party to enjoy the norther lights. D.His lifelong dream.
22.What can we infer about the author from Paragraph 3
A.She felt very angry. B.She was quite thrilled.
C.She was a little disappointed. D.She gradually lost her patience.
23.Why is Fairbanks an ideal place to enjoy the northern lights
A.It offers visitors a guaranteed sighting.
B.It’s located in the Antarctic Circle.
C.It has winter activities for travelers.
D.It’s free from coastal cloudy weather.
24.What is the last paragraph mainly about
A.The beauty of aurora. B.Scott’s camera.
C.The author’s departure. D.The shapes of northern lights.

There are many ways in which a person’s body language can give you information about whether they are lying or not.
One of the biggest signs that a person is telling lies is that he avoids eye contact during conversation. He may also touch his face often, covering his mouth with his hand very often. Touching the nose is also said to be a sign of taking others’ attention to cover up lies. A person who is not telling the truth may be trying to make you focus on his actions rather than his words.
When a liar (说谎者) tells lies, his physical expression is often very stiff (僵硬的). If he is smiling as he speaks, only the mouth will move. A real smile naturally causes movement of the mouth, eyes, forehead, cheeks, and jaw.
The liar’s hand, leg and arm movements are toward his own body. He takes up little space. The person’s body language is closed off. Liars do not look relaxed, even though they may be trying to give the impression that they are.
When explaining something, a liar usually feels uncomfortable with pauses (停顿) or silences. The person may speak gently or in disordered words. A very skillful liar is able to speak directly and with confidence. In fact, some salespeople are best at this skill.
If you doubt someone is lying, change the topic of conversation suddenly. The liar will willingly change topics with you and become more relaxed. A person who is telling the truth will generally become confused by this sudden change. Another sign of someone telling a lie is yawning (哈欠) — the person may try and look as relaxed as possible, and yawing and stretching are ways of achieving this.
25.Why do liars often cover their mouths
A.To show their own skill. B.To avoid the mouth’s stiffness.
C.To smile because they feel shy. D.To change the listener’s attention.
26.What does the author think of some salesmen
A.They speak softly. B.They say “by the way”.
C.They speak confidently. D.They are anxious while lying.
27.Which can best describe the liar’s yawning
A.Uncomfortable. B.Relaxing seemingly. C.Worrying. D.Exciting.
28.How does the author mainly develop the topic of the text
A.By giving explanation. B.By listing numbers.
C.By using others’ words. D.By showing results of research.
C
Seals may sound different than expected from their body size. Is this ability related to their vocal talents or is it the result of adaptation An international team of researchers led by scientists from the Max Planck Institute investigated the vocal tracts (声道) of seals, which matched their body size. This means that seals are capable of learning new sounds.
Most animals produce calls that reflect their body size. A larger animal will sound lower-pitched because its vocal tract, the air-filled tube that produces sounds, is longer. But seals do not always sound like they look. They may sound larger, perhaps to impress an enemy; or smaller, perhaps to get attention from their mothers. Are these animals very good at learning sounds, or have their vocal tracts adapted to allow this vocal flexibility (灵活性)
To answer this question, Professor De Reus worked together with researchers from the Max Planck Institute. The team measured young seals’ vocal tracts and body size. The measurements were taken from 68 young seals (up to twelve months old) who had died. The team also re-analyzed previously gathered seal vocal data to confirm their impressive vocal flexibility.
De Reus found that the length of seals’ vocal tracts matched their body size. There were no anatomical (身体结构的) explanations for their vocal skills. Meanwhile, the researchers argue that only vocal learning can explain why seals do not sound like they look. “Vocal learners will sound different from their body size, but the size of their vocal tracts will match their body size. The combined findings from acoustic (听觉的) and anatomical data may help us to identify more vocal learners,” says de Reus. “Studying different vocal learners may help us to find the biological bases of vocal learning and shed light on the evolution of complex vocal systems, such as speech. The more we look, the more we see that it would help to study human speech ability.”
29.How did De Reus and the team conduct the research
A.By testing seals’ ability.
B.By recording seals’ behaviors.
C.By confirming the flexibility of seals.
D.By measuring seals’ vocal tracts and analyzing.
30.What can be inferred from the last paragraph
A.Seals are related with human evolution.
B.Seals contributes to human biological bases.
C.Studying seals promotes human speech research.
D.Seals’ vocal learning is the same as human speech.
31.What’s the text mainly about
A.Seals’ vocal tracts are long.
B.Seals are capable of singing.
C.Seals have the ability to learn sounds.
D.Young seals produce lower-pitched sounds.
32.In which column of a website can the text be read

A new project aims to create a computer replica of an entire city. It will allow experts to perform real-time resilience testing to see how infrastructure will perform in the face of challenges such as climate change and population growth.
Known as the “digital twin”, the technology has already been adopted by Formula One teams and engine makers like Rolls Royce, but its use to this degree didn’t exist.
A partnership between Newcastle University and Northumbrian Water will recreate Newcastle based on data from across the city and test its resilience in possible emergencies. Professor Chris Kilsby said, “You can try lots of things with the twin in the case of a city. I think of it as a replica that you can play with and do unimaginable things to see what would happen. The changes can be seen immediately — from observing what would happen if the river Tyne rises by a few meters to what the city would look like if the population has aged over a certain period of time. It could also be used to model human behavior, for example, determining the most likely roads people would use in the event of a food.”
Newcastle University is working on a data platform with lots of dynamic parts like traffic, water, population, etc. Much of the data is coming from the university’s Urban Observatory project, which has monitors all over the city checking pollution, water quality and biodiversity.
In 2012 an event known locally as the “Toon monsoon” took place, with a month’s worth of rain falling in two hours during the evening rush hour, causing 8 m worth of damage. The Toon monsoon caused a breakdown to the city because we just didn’t design anything for that sort of event. There was no one to blame. The city just couldn’t resist the heavy rain.
The digital twin will allow the city not only to react in real time to such strange weather events, but also to test its resilience in endless potential future emergencies.
Chris Jones, research and development manager at Northumbrian Water, imagined the project’s “amazing possibilities”, saying that in time it could be applied to any city with accessible data.
33.What do we know about the “digital twin” from the first two paragraphs
A.It is a computer system. B.It is not new to us.
C.It predicts extreme weather. D.It has met with many challenges.
34.What will Newcastle University do in the project according to the passage
A.Offering big data about the city
B.Advocating the new technology.
C.Making up the loss caused by flood.
D.Working out plans for future emergencies.
35.Why is the “Toon monsoon” mentioned here
A.To draw people’s attention to the terrible loss of the city.
B.To warn people of the potential harm of heavy rain.
C.To indicate the new project’s significance.
D.To show the digital twin’s weakness.
第二节选句填空(共5小题;每小题2.5分,满分12.5分)
You only live once, and life is short. It’s easy to look at people who are happy and assume that they don’t understand your pain. The older you get, the more you realize that happiness takes work. People who smile in public have been through as much as people who cry, scream, etc. 36 So how can you live life to the fullest Here are some tips to help you out:
Decide what’s important to you. It doesn’t matter what it is. 37 Your parents, friends and society in general all have their opinions, but you’re the only person who will be around for every moment of your life. Do what makes you happy, and everything else will fall into place.
Ready to take risks. Sometimes, there’s danger involved in life, but every reward carries risk with it. 38 However, if you never take risks, you’ll never get anywhere in life. When people look back on their lives, they regret the chances they didn’t take more than the ones they did.
Ignore the haters. No matter what you decide to do with your life, there will always be someone around to point out the many ways you will fail. Know that every winner loses, but not every loser wins. 39 Instead, they keep pushing through failure.
40 Your being right about something doesn’t mean there aren’t other ways to look at it. Listening to ideas you don’t agree with or understand keeps your brain active and healthy.
A.Keep an open mind.
B.Speak through your actions.
C.Successful people don’t start out successful.
D.Don’t do what you think people want you to do.
E.It is true that some actions might have bad results.
F.They just have the courage and strength to smile through it.

Clothing rental is a hot new industry and retailers are demanding to get on board in hopes of attracting green shopper.
But is renting fashion actually more environmentally-friendly than buying it, and if so, how much more Journalist and author Elizabeth Cline 61 this question and concluded that it’s not as 62 as it seems.
Take shipping, for example, which has to go two ways if an item is rented-receiving and returning. Cline writes that consumer transportation has the second largest carbon 63 of our collective fashion habit after manufacturing.
She writes, “An item ordered online and then returned can send out 20 kilograms of carbon each way, and 64 up to 50 kilograms for rush shipping. By 65 the carbon impact of a pair of jeans purchased from a physical store and washed and worn at home is 33.4 kilograms, according to a 2015 study by Levi’s.”
Then there’s the burden of washing, which has to happen for every item when it’s returned, regardless of whether or not it was worn. For most rental services, this usually means dry cleaning, a high impact and polluting 66 . All the rental services that Cline looked into have replaced perchloroethylene, an air pollutant that 67 cancers, still used by 70 percent of US dry cleaners, with alternatives, although these aren’t great, either.
Lastly, Cline fears that rental services will increase our appetite for fast fashion, simply because it’s so easily 68 . There’s something called “share washing” that makes people waste more precisely because a product or service is shared and thus is regarded as more eco-friendly. Uber is one example of this, 69 as “a way to share rides and limit car ownership.” and yet “it has been proven to 70 walking, bicycling, and public transportation use.”
Renting clothes is still preferable to buying them cheap and throwing them in the dustbin after a few wears, but we shouldn’t let the availability of these services make us too satisfied. There’s an even better step-that’s wearing what is already in the closet.

Once when I was a teenager, my father and I were standing in line to buy tickets for the circus (马戏团) . Finally, there was only one family between us and the ticket counter (柜台).
This family made a big impression on me. There were eight children, all probably under the age of twelve. You could tell they didn’t have a lot of money.
Their clothes were not expensive, but they were clean. The children were well-behaved, all of them standing in line, two-by-two behind their parents, holding hands. They were excitedly talking about the clowns. elephants, and other acts they would see that night with their brothers or sisters in a low voice.
One could sense they had never been to the circus before. It promised to be highlight of their young lives. The father and mother were at the head of the pack, standing proud as could be. The mother was holding her husband’s hand, looking up at him as if to say, “You are my knight (骑士) in shining armor (盔甲).”
He was smiling and responding in pride, looking back at her as if to say, “You got that right” . The ticket lady asked the father how many tickets he wanted. He proudly responded, “Please let me buy eight child tickets and two adult tickets so I can take my family to the circus.”
The ticket lady gave the price. The man’s wife let go of his hand, her head dropped, and his lips began to shake. The father leaned (倾斜) a little closer and asked. “How much do you say ”
The ticket lady again quoted (报价) the price. The man didn’t have enough money.
How was he supposed to turn around and tell his eight children that he didn’t have enough money to take them to the circus
Actually we were not wealthy in any sense. So I understand how the kids would feel. I felt sorry for them.
注意:续写词数应为80左右。
Seeing what was going on, my dad put his hand in his pocket, pulled out a $20 bill and dropped it on the ground.

Then he picked it up and tapped the man on the shoulder and said, “Excuse me, sir, this fell out of your pocket.” The man turned around and saw the money. He knew what was going on, he looked straight in my dad’s eyes, took my dad’s hand in both of his, and squeezed tightly onto the $20 bill. With his lip shaking and tears running down his check, he replied “Thank you, thank you, sir. This really means a lot to me and my family.”
