Walled Cities Of The World
There are numerous historical walled cities across the world, whose walls date back several centuries. These walls were fortification (碉堡), a necessity throughout medieval eras for defense. They have been preserved as historical monuments and popular tourist attractions in the modern time.
York, England
The city of York is a medieval city situated in the north of England. Historically, the city was ruled by the Romans, Angles, and the Vikings before being incorporated as part of the Kingdom of England in 954. The city of Xian is one of the oldest cities in China. It prospered economically as the eastern last station of the Silk Road. The existing walls were originally built in 770 BC and reconstructed in the 14th century under the Ming Dynasty. The walls are well preserved and are a major tourist attraction in the city.
Quebec City, Canada
Quebec City was a colonial (殖民地的) town which was fortified by the settling Europeans. The walls began to be built in 1608 under both British and French regimes (政权). A fort was constructed by the British as an additional defensive measure and remains undamaged to date. The city's fortifications were listed as a UNESCO World Heritage Site in 1985.
Mexico City, Mexico
Historically, the City of Mexico gained importance as the Aztec Capital. The Spanish then drove out the Aztecs and rebuilt it as the Spanish Capital. The walls protecting the city were built in 1521. These days, videos of "diving grandpas" from north China's Tianjin are popular on the Internet. In the videos, they jumped off the Shizilin Bridge into the 7-meter-deep Haihe River. However, on Wednesday, they announced that they would give up the sport.
With an average age of 60, the diving grandpas have much experience in diving. They started as a group of local diving lovers. They went swimming in the city's rivers, and later they tried their hand at diving. The hobby has now lasted for more than thirty years.
Videos on the Internet have drawn lots of tourists from across the country to the Shizilin Bridge over the Haihe River, where "diving grandpas" perform diving. However, some inexperienced divers, trying to follow "diving grandpas", have met with accidents and got themselves injured. Some of the grandpas have begun volunteering to keep order for the crowds that come to see the performance on the bridge. However, accidents still continued to happen. As reported, members of the Blue Sky Rescue team in Tianjin said that they rescued 14 people at the risk of drowning or other injury in just two days.
The grandpas then made a difficult decision. They stopped diving off the bridge. They also prevented inexperienced locals and children as well as tourists from diving from the bridge. The grandpas welcomed the tourists to Tianjin, especially pointing out the other great places of interest and delicious food around the Shizilin Bridge.

Researchers from the University of Western Australia recently studied 3,000 middle and high school students. Among them were 618 teenagers with one parent who lived away from home for long periods of time because of work. The researchers wanted to know how the work of these "fly-in, fly-out" parents might influence the health of their children.
A higher percentage of teenagers who experienced the long work absence of a parent had emotional or behavioral problems compared with those whose parents worked more traditional hours. This supports earlier research finding high percentages of emotional problems in teenagers who often returned to an empty house after school or whose parents were seldom at dinner.
Findings also suggest that parents don't have to be home all the time to be present in their children's lives, but it helps to be home at certain times. And the best parental presence for a teenager may sometimes be like a potted (盆栽的) plant.
Many parents of teenagers have known this to be true and find ways to be present without trying to start a conversation. One friend of mine quietly does housework each evening in the sitting room where her teenagers watch TV. They enjoy one another's company without the need to talk. Another friend usually accepts his daughter's invitation to work or read nearby while she sits and does her homework. Perhaps, that, at least for some families, is the best way for a teenager and their parents to stay close.
In fact, many years of research suggest that children use their parents as a safe base from which to explore the world. Studies tell us that young children quietly follow their parents' movements from room to room, even while carrying on with their own activities. Perhaps our teens, like babies, feel most at ease when their parents are still around. They don't want to stay away from parents who allow them freedom.
A new school year is at hand, so as parents we could offer our teenagers a "potted flower" as a gift, whose quiet and steady presence will give them a great day.
28. What did the study find about the 618 teens
A. They had more dinners with their parents.
B. They were more prepared to help themselves.
C. They were more likely to have trouble with their feelings.
D. They showed more dislike for traditional working hours.
29. What is the author's attitude to her two friends' practices
A. Doubtful. B. Supportive. C. Hesitant. D. Unconcerned.
30. Who are probably the target readers of this passage
A. Parents. B. Teenagers. C. Researchers. D. Educators.
31. What is the best title for the text
A. Teens want potted plant parents B. Your kids still need conversation
C. Quiet families raise healthier teenagers D. Parents know little about today's teenagers
D
Robots really are taking over the world. They're writing novels-the first was 1 the Road, a cyborg's homage to Jack Kerouac published in 2018. And they're making lunch: The California restaurant chain Cali Burger is trying out a robot that can flip 2,000 burgers a day. What human can compete-especially given that robots don't complain, ask for raises, or get drunk at the office Christmas party
To celebrate the 100th anniversary of the invention of the word robot by the Czech playwright Karel Capek, we thought it would be fun to take a look at another side of robotkind, one that's all too human. Here're two failed attempts by robots to replace us flesh-and-bone types.
A few years back, the Hennna Hotel in Nagasaki, Japan, hired 243 robots to cover positions ranging from receptionists to bellboys. Unfortunately, the check-in robots had trouble answering guests' questions and photocopying passports, while bellboy robots kept banging into walls and tripping over curbs. One in-room assistant sprang to attention every time a lodger snored, saying, "Sorry, I couldn't catch that. Could you repeat your request " Not long after the experiment began, the hotel "fired" half of the malfunctioning robots. And they didn't get their tips, either.
Facial recognition software has one problem-it can't always recognize faces. The American Civil Liberties Union proved that point when it used the Amazon Rekognition software to match mug shots of criminals to 28 members of Congress. But what about soccer ball recognition During a match last year, the Scottish soccer team Inverness Caledonian Thistle FC unveiled AI-programmed video cameras designed to automatically follow the ball. Alas, the cameras constantly mistook the referee's bald head for the soccer ball. One helpful viewer called the team to suggest supplying the referee with a cap.
32. Why did the hotel fire as many as half of the robots they had hired
A. Because they cost much more than they earned.
B. Because they didn't answer their guests' questions.
C. Because they often disturbed their customers.
D. Because they failed to do their jobs as expected.
33. What does the underlined word "unveiled" in the fourth paragraph probably mean
A. borrowed B. introduced C. purchased D. invented
34. What did the author take a soccer match as an example to show
A. His protest against the cameras. B. His deep love for soccer matches.
C. Some failure attempted by robots. D. The great success achieved by robots.
35. Which of the following shows the structure of this passage
(①=Paragraph 1, ②=Paragraph 2, ③=Paragraph 3, ④=Paragraph 4)
A. B. C. D.

Wisdom is a remarkable accumulation of experience, knowledge, and sound judgement. It is not merely a desirable quality but an absolute necessity in a world filled with challenges, controversy, and polarization. 36 It shines our way ahead towards the best decisions.
Growing up with fairy tales and fantasy movies, I always associated wisdom with Gandalf, Yoda, and Albus Dumbledore. The truth is that there is more to wisdom than this, although these characters have given every one of us many important lessons. 37 And how
Variety is more than the spice of life. Embarking on new experiences is also an avenue for acquiring wisdom. You will never grow from being in your comfort zone which is why you need to get out of it. Do change your routine and experience as much as what life takes you to! In fact, there're always several sides to a life story. To identify the truth, you need to be receptive to different views. Never base your perspective on the most popular opinions. 38 Instead, train your mind to be a judgment-free space for ideas. Open-mindedness opens new pathways to profound insights.
What if you are desperate for personal growth and improvement A shortcut to do that is to have wise people as your tutors, with whom the more time you spend, the more transfer of knowledge there will be. Your tutors can be whoever is wiser than you. 39
40 Remember developing wisdom is beyond a destination. It is important to acknowledge that it takes a span of your life and continuous effort to mature in wisdom as you navigate life's challenges.
A. Nor is it emotion-based.
B. Rome wasn't built in a day.
C. It isn't something you are born with.

The small wedding celebration was set for the next day. Twenty-one friends and family members were getting together at a beautiful villa in the hills near the charming town of Brighton, just under an hour's drive from the airport. "I can't wait for the barbecue tonight, never mind the wedding," said Emma to her husband, John.
The couple arrived at the airport around 6 p.m. After checking out, they rented a car and headed towards the property where Emma's daughter, the bride, was eagerly waiting to share such a magical event with the ones she loved.
As they crossed the hilly landscape, the sun had gone down and rain was falling heavily. But that didn't take away from the beauty of the island. They chatted happily. John, from the driver's seat, kept her amused, completely unaware that the rainfall-more than nine inches would fall that day-had already reached dangerous levels.
As they drove past the town and up the winding road into the hills, the rain intensified, and the sky grew darker. They were approaching a bridge over what was usually a small stream when a lot of dirty and fast-moving water unexpectedly washed over it. In just a few seconds, their little white car slid into the now rapidly flowing river and rolled down the hillside.
The incident unfolded so rapidly that the two inside the car were too stunned to scream. As the car moved through the water, hitting the underside of a couple of bridges, they held on tightly to the seats and doors in shock.
Emma, seated in the back with a large present box for her daughter, noticed water coming into the car. Muddy water was pouring into the car, rising quickly.

Emma realized they had to get out before the water level became too dangerous. It was then that she noticed John's foot was caught and he couldn't move. She tried desperately to free him, but the water pressure was too great. She tried her best to free him, but in vain. They desperately tried to shout as hard as they could, while holding down the car horn. The water kept rising and was about to drown the car. What they saw made them very scared. Even though they had no strength because of the loud shouting, they still held on.
Nearby residents, Mike and his brother David, heard cries. Without hesitation, when they knew what had happened , they dived in, and swam towards the car. After several attempts, they were rescued. Shaken and relieved, Emma hugged John tightly and thanked their rescuers. The small wedding celebration had turned into a near-death experience. But, it was the kindness and bravery of strangers that gave Emma and John a renewed appreciation for life and reminded them that in times of crisis, humanity can shine through.
