During the Waring States period (战国时期), Lord Mengchang, the high minister (相国) of Qi, often invited scholars (学者) to stay in his house for a long time.
One day, lord Mengchang asked Feng Xuan, one of the scholars, to go to a city called Xue to collect rent. But the people there had a bad harvest (收成) that year. Feng then decided not to collect the rent, instead, he burned all of the land leases (租约) in front of the locals.
One year later, Lord Mengchang was removed from his position(免职) as high minister. When he returned to Xue, the local people welcomed him warmly. Lord Mengchang was deeply moved. When he thanked Feng for what he had done, Feng replied, “A rabbit should have three holes to hide in. In this way, it won’ t be caught by hunters. Now, Xue is one of your ‘holes’. Then, Feng went to the state of Liang. He told the King of Liang how talented Lord Mengchang was.
