In many regions of Ghana, it can take hours to get to the nearest hospital. As a result, many people lose their lives to treatable illnesses. Osei Boateng experienced this personally when he lost his grandmother and aunt. Feeling an urgent call to help, Boateng decided he would make it his life mission to bring health care to remote communities in Ghana.
Boateng started his nonprofit, OKB Hope Foundation 2 years ago, he converted a van (厢式货车) into a mobile doctor’s office and started bringing health care directly to those in need. A few times a week, the mobile clinic and medical team travel long distance to remote communities in Ghana and provide free routine medical care.
On each trip Boateng’s team consists of a nurse, a physician’s assistant, a doctor, and an operation assistant. In the van, they can run basic labs like bloodwork as well as prescribe and provide medications. “It’s like a one-stop shop for people,” said Boateng, adding that most of the people they see have one health issue or another.
Since its launch, Boateng says the Hope Health Van has served more than 4,000 Ghanaians across more than 45 rural communities who otherwise don’t have easily accessible medical care. Boateng has big plans for the future. He hopes to expand to provide more consistent and high-quality mobile medical care not only to those living in remote areas of Ghana but in other countries as well.
Boateng has gone all in on his OKB Hope Foundation, recently quitting his job to dedicate his time to bringing health care to his home country. But for him, the sacrifices are well worth the reward. “Words cannot describe the feeling that you get providing care for someone who otherwise wouldn’t be alive if your mobile health van wasn’t there.”

The challenge of storing energy year-round has been one of the biggest obstacles to the widespread adoption of green power. However, Polar Night Energy has developed the world’s first fully functional commercial sand battery, which could offer a low-cost, eco-friendly solution to the storage problem. It is the first commercial sand battery in the world, and it was built in Kankaanpaa, Finland in 2022.
Dr. Natalia Schiff, expert of Polar Night Energy, says that sand battery works by heating sand up to high temperatures (at around 500℃) using renewable energy, such as solar or wind power. The hot sand can then be stored for months or even years, and then discharged to provide heat or electricity when needed.
The Polar Night sand battery has a capacity of8 megawatt hours (MWh) of thermal (热量) energy, and it can discharge about 200 kilowatts (kW)of power. This means that it can provide heat for about 4,000 homes for a day, or it can generate enough electricity to power about 100 homes for a day.
Sand battery is relatively inexpensive to build, and it is compatible (兼容的) with a wide range of renewable energy sources. It also can be built in larger sizes to store more energy, which is a promising new technology for storing renewable energy.
Sand batteries could be a valuable tool to combat climate change. They could help to make renewable energy more reliable and available, which would reduce our reliance on fossil fuels. They could also be used to provide heat in areas that are not connected to the electricity.
As the world transitions to a clean energy future, sand batteries could play an important role in helping to balance the energy and ensuring that we have a reliable source of energy when we need it.
8. What is the characteristic of sand battery
A. Costly and demanding. B. Cheap and clean.
C. Costly and imaginary. D. Cheap but polluting.
9. What does Dr. Natalia Schiff tell us
A. Working model of sand battery.
B. Statistical method of the research.
C. Theoretical basis of making batteries.
D. Historical analysis of renewable energy.
10. What does the underlined word “combat” in paragraph 5 mean
A. Comfort. B. Commit. C. Fight for. D. Fight against.
11. What is the author’s attitude toward sand battery
A. Unclear. B. Dismissive. C. Doubtful. D. Favorable.
D
Seals may sound different than expected from their body size. Is this ability related to their vocal talents or is it the result of adaptation An international team of researchers led by scientists from the Max Planck Institute investigated the vocal tracts (声道) of seals, which matched their body size. This means that seals are capable of learning new sounds.
Most animals produce calls that reflect their body size. A larger animal will sound lower-pitched because its vocal tract, the air-filled tube that produces sounds, is longer. But seals do not always sound like they look. They may sound larger, perhaps to impress an enemy; or smaller, perhaps to get attention from their mothers. Are these animals very good at learning sounds, or have their vocal tracts adapted to allow this vocal flexibility (灵活性)
To answer this question, Professor De Reus worked together with researchers from the Max Planck Institute. The team measured young seals’ vocal tracts and body size. The measurements were taken from 68 young seals (up to twelve months old) who had died. The team also re-analyzed previously gathered seal vocal data to confirm their impressive vocal flexibility.
De Reus found that the length of seals’ vocal tracts matched their body size. There were no anatomical (身体结构的) explanations for their vocal skills. Meanwhile, the researchers argue that only vocal learning can explain why seals do not sound like they look. “Vocal learners will sound different from their body size, but the size of their vocal tracts will match their body size. The combined findings from acoustic (听觉的) and anatomical data may help us to identify more vocal learners,” says de Reus. “Studying different vocal learners may help us to find the biological bases of vocal learning and shed light on the evolution of complex vocal systems, such as speech. The more we look, the more we see that it would help to study human speech ability.”
12. How did De Reus and the team conduct the research
A. By testing seals’ ability.
B. By recording seals’ behaviors.
C. By confirming the flexibility of seals.
D. By measuring seals’ vocal tracts and analyzing.
13. What can be inferred from the last paragraph
A. Seals are related with human evolution.
B. Seals contributes to human biological bases.
C. Studying seals promotes human speech research.
D. Seals’ vocal learning is the same as human speech.
14. What’s the text mainly about
A. Seals’ vocal tracts are long.
B. Seals are capable of singing.
C. Seals have the ability to learn sounds.
D. Young seals produce lower-pitched sounds.
15. In which column of a website can the text be read
A. Chemistry. B. Nature. C. Environment. D. Lifestyle.

第二节(满分25分)
47. 阅读下面材料,根据其内容和所给段落开头语续写两段,使之构成一篇完整的短文。
Rob was fifteen years old and still living on his father’s farm. He loved his father. But he did not realize this fact until just a few days before Christmas when he overheard what his father had said to his mother.
“Mary, I hate to call on Rob in the mornings. He’s growing so fast and he needs his sleep. I wish I could manage things alone.”
“Well, you can’t, Adam, “Rob’s mother replied firmly.” Besides, he isn’t a child anymore. It’s time he took his turn.”
“Yes,” his father said slowly. “But I sure do hate to wake him.”
When he heard these words, Rob felt a sudden realization: his father loved him! He had never thought of it before, taking for granted their blood relations. Now that he knew how much his father loved him, there would be no more loitering (虚度) in the mornings and having to be called on again. He got up, stumbling blind with sleep, and pulled on his clothes.
A thought then struck him like a club. Why not give his father a special gift He could get up earlier, creep into the barn (畜棚) and get all the milking done. And then when his father went in to start the milking, he’d see it all already done. Yes, that’s what I’ll do, he thought, so I mustn’t sleep too soundly. He must have checked forty times, striking a match each time to look at his old watch. At a quarter to three, he crept downstairs, careful of the creaky boards, then let himself out.
The cows looked at him, sleepy and surprised. It was early for them, too. But they accepted him calmly as Rob brought some hay (草料) for each cow and got the milking pail (桶) and the big milk cans.
注意:1. 续写词数应为150词左右;
2. 请按如下格式在答题卡的相应位置作答。
Rob had never milked all alone before, but it seemed almost easy.

The Polar Night sand battery has a capacity of8 megawatt hours (MWh) of thermal (热量的) energy, and it can discharge about 200 kilowatts (kW)of power.
A. Unclear. B. Dismissive. C. Doubtful. D. Favorable.

D. Lifestyle.

【答案】
Dear Mike,
I am sorry to learn that you have been suffering stomachaches, which prevents you from performing well in your work. Worse still, you haven’t got better after taking medicine. Therefore, I would like to recommend traditional Chinese medicine to you, hoping it is of great help to you.
From my perspective, Chinese medicine is superior to western medicine in a sense. First, it is typical of Chinese medicine to produce fewer side effects, which will do less harm to your health. In addition, compared with western medicine, Chinese medicine is less expensive, so you don’t need to worry about your budget. Most importantly, it is an unbelievable cure for stomachache, which will help you recover in a short time. All in all, I do believe the treatment appeals greatly to you.
If there is anything you need me to do, don’t hesitate to inform me. Hope you will recover soon.
Yours,
Li Hua

【答案】
Rob had never milked all alone before, but it seemed almost easy. Milking for once was not a chore. It was something else, a gift to his father who loved him, so he felt happy to do it. After what seemed like one hour, the two milk cans were eventually full, and he covered them and closed the barn door gently. Back in his room, he had only a minute to take off his clothes in the darkness and jumped into bed, for he heard his father up. His door was knocked and obviously his father came to wake him up as usual.
“Rob, we have to get up!” his father called, opening the door. “Aw-right, ” he said sleepily. The sound of his father’s footsteps died away and he lay still, laughing to himself. Then ten minutes later, the door opened and in came his father, sitting by the bed, his father reached our for his shoulder excitedly. “Rob, thank you. Nobody ever did a nicer thing. ” He got up from the bed and hugged his father tightly. “It’s for Christmas, Dad!” They both were in love and happiness.
