Learning Chinese could be one of the most important decisions you ever make. Chinese is becoming the language to learn in the 21st century. With the world’s largest population and a rapidly growing middle class, China stands to become the engine of the world’s economy in the coming years. This will make learning Chinese very important for people in many industries, or for those of us who wish to visit China or learn from its culture and history.
There is an ongoing effort to modernize the writing system and standardize the language. An increasing number of people learning Chinese are learning the Mandarin, so unless you absolutely need to learn another dialect (such as Cantonese), be sure you are studying Mandarin.
For native English speakers Chinese is one of the most difficult and most different languages to learn. The vocabulary is wholly unfamiliar and unlike anything we know. In addition, in the Chinese tone system, words are spoken in rising or falling tones, which help to distinguish between them. Furthermore, there is the Chinese writing system — a collection of thousands of individual ideograms (表意文字), or symbols, which represent a word or an idea. These ideograms have no phonetic value — that is to say, we can’t tell how the word is pronounced by how it is written. There is a method to present written Chinese in a phonetic script called pinyin. If you are learning Chinese, you’ll be working with this pinyin system, but the beauty of the traditional writing system shouldn’t be passed up. All these factors make learning Chinese difficult for us. Yet, for a determined learner, there’s always a way to overcome it.
4. Learning Chinese is becoming more and more important because ________ .
A. Chinese engines are very welcome
B. China has the world’s largest population
C. there are more and more rich people in China
D. China has become important to the world economy
5. From the text we can learn that ________.
A. the author thinks Chinese is as difficult as English
B. the author is interested in the Chinese language and its culture
C. foreign languages can play a great role in industrial development
D. as long as the pinyin system is learned well, one can learn Chinese well
6. The last paragraph mainly tells us about________.
A. the difficulties of learning Chinese B. the advantages of learning Chinese
C. the Chinese tone system D. the Chinese writing system
7. What would be probably written following this text
A. The sources of Chinese characters. B. The importance of learning Chinese.
C The advice on how to learn Chinese. D. The difficulties of learning other languages.

A few weeks ago, my teenage daughter Lisa failed a test. The grade might stop her from qualifying for the next class she wants to take. There were tears and some complaints for a few minutes. Then I saw something interesting. She made a joke, expressed gratitude that she didn’t have bigger problems, and finally made a plan on how to make improvements.
She was never the same as she was one year ago. That one was unwilling to take responsibility. That one stayed in anger and blamed others. We expect our kids to learn and grow. We hope for it. However, most of us grow through adversity (逆境), even trauma (精神创伤). It happened to Lisa last year repeatedly. She searched for ways to get her bearings and equip herself when everything around her was changing by the day. Psychologists call it post-traumatic growth.
Trauma refers to an emotional response to a terrible event like an accident, attack, natural disaster, or other life-changing happenings. The growth after trauma doesn’t mean we get through challenges uninjured. It’s been a scary and painful time, for everyone, in one way or another. We may experience disbelief, depression, and even denial. As time moves on, people who have experienced trauma may have headaches or other physical symptoms, emotional ups and downs, and even relationship problems. Trauma does leave its irremovable marks.
However, in one study, researchers surveyed nearly 385 people who experienced financial difficulty during the pandemic. 88 percent of the people surveyed say they also have experienced some positive outcomes—They now have stronger family relationships and a greater appreciation of life.
8. What is Lisa like now when she fails
A. She tries to cover it.
B. She is positive and adult.
C. She acts unconcerned.
D. She wants to make excuses.
9. What does the author intend to tell us through Lisa’s experience
A. There is no sweet without sweat.
B. Experience is the father of wisdom.
C. Difficult situations are likely to make one stronger.
D. Responsibility is often more important than ability.
10. How does the author prove his view
A. By analyzing existing data.
B. By quoting a psychologist.
C. By contrasting a person’s constant changes.
D. By giving examples together with study results.
11. Which of the following may the author agree with about post-traumatic growth
A. It usually comes at a high price.
B. It produces little negative feelings.
C. It is one of the fastest ways to make improvements.
D. It is growth that does both good and harm.

A flood hit Yellowstone National Park on June 13, 2022. The disaster was caused by a combination of unusually heavy rains and rapid snow melt. The high and fast water flows destroyed bridges and swept away entire roadways, leaving communities and homes isolated. Fortunately, the approximately 10,000 park visitors were safely evacuated.
The town of Gardiner, along the Montana-Wyoming border, was particularly hard hit. The floodwaters left almost 900 people with no power or water for many days. Gardiner’s economy, which depends on the almost three-quarters of a million visitors who pass through the park’s north gate annually, is likely to take a hit. The floodwaters severely damaged the main north entrance road to Yellowstone, and could take years to rebuild.
Park officials have begun work on improving an alternative road to Gardiner. This will ensure that locals can access food supplies, and other essential emergency services. A limited number of tourists may also be allowed into Gardiner once the road is stable.
Yellowstone’s north gate is closed indefinitely. But the park’s south gate opened to visitors on June 22, 2022. Park officials have started a new entry system to prevent overcrowding. It is based on the last number of the visitor’s vehicle license plate and the calendar date of the month. Cars with odd (奇数的) numbers can visit the park on odd days of the month, while those with even (偶数的) numbers can go on even days.
Established in 1872, Yellowstone is America’s oldest national park. The 3,472-square-mile reserve spans three states and is home to many unique wildlife. It is known for its natural beauty that includes mountains, rivers and lakes. The forces of fire and ice shaped the park over thousands of years.
12. What does the underlined word “isolated” in paragraph 1 probably mean
A. Tracked. B. Separated.
C. Decorated. D. Improved.
13. What was the possible result of the flood
A. Gardiner’s economy would get into trouble.
B. Communities and homes were left in ruins.
C. Almost 900 people were trapped in the park.
D. The park’s south gate was closed for a while.
14. What can be inferred from the text
A. Local people can get daily necessities from visitors.
B. The park has adopted a new system to recognize faces.
C. The license plate number decides when cars enter the park.
D. More tourists may flood into the park for geological features.
15. What can be the best title for the text
A. Flooding Has Caused Widespread Damage in the US
B. Yellowstone National Park Was Closed due to Flooding
C. Natural Beauty Makes Yellowstone America’s Oldest Park
D. Yellowstone National Park Partially Reopens After Flooding

【答案】8. B 9. C 10. D 11. D

This will ensure that locals can access food, supplies, and other essential emergency services.

Learning to set goals plays an important role as your child starts to gain independence. However, setting goals doesn’t come naturally to your child, so helping him to learn the process should probably be one of your goals.
Explain the word “goal”. Your child may know what a goal is when it comes to soccer, but he may not understand what it means in everyday life. ___16___
Listen to your child. Ideally, you want your child to be able to decide for himself what his goals are. ____17____ Let him talk about what he thinks he does well and what he thinks he needs to improve. If he’s stuck, you can provide some examples of your own personal goals.
Help keep goals achievable. Don’t throw cold water on your child. ____18____ For example, if your child wants to be a champion swimmer, but can’t swim an entire lap of the pool yet, you can suggest he start by making that his first goal.
___19___ Help your child write down his goals in an easy to follow form. Being able to see and check off the steps on the way to his goal is key in keeping him motivated. A really simple way is to have your child draw a ladder on a piece of paper, writing his goal at the top and each step to that goal on the rungs (梯级). ___20___
A. Change goals every so often.
B. Make a visual goal reminder.
C. Don’t always tell him what you think.
D. He’s climbing to the top as he gets closer to his goal.
E. You can take sports as an example to help explain it to him.
F. Once he has set up a goal, he may find it very difficult to achieve it.
G. When a goal is beyond his reach, help him break it down into smaller pieces.
【答案】16. E 17. C 18. G 19. B 20. D
【解析】
【分析】这是一篇说明文。本文就怎样帮助孩子设定目标给了几个建议。
16题详解】
根据“Explain the word “goal”.”可知本段的主题句是:解释单词“goal”。根据空前“Your child may know what a goal is when it comes to soccer, but he may not understand what it means in everyday life”(当提到足球时,你的孩子可能知道“goal”是什么,但是他可能不理解日常生活中的“goal”意味着什么)选项承接上文,说明怎么做才能让孩子理解“goal”故E(你可以举运动的例子来向他解释“goal”。)切题。故选E项。
【17题详解】
本段主要谈的是听你的孩子说话。空前“Ideally, you want your child to be able to decide for himself what his goals are.”(理论上,你想让你的孩子为他自己决定目标)根据空后句“Let him talk about what he thinks he does well and what he thinks he needs to improve.”(让他说说他认为他能把什么做好以及他认为需要改进什么。)可知,选项承接上下文说明让孩子说出自己的想法,所以这里选C(不要总是告诉他你的想法。)切题。Don’t always tell him what you think呼应Let him talk about what he thinks。故选C项。
【18题详解】
根据空“For example, if your child wants to be a champion swimmer, but can’t swim an entire lap of the pool yet, you can suggest he start by making that his first goal.”(例如,你的孩子想成为游泳冠军,但是他还游不了池塘整圈,你可以建议他把这作为他的第一个目标。)可知,选项承接下文,说明要分解目标。break it down into smaller pieces呼应making that his first goal.故G选项(当目标超出他的能力范围时,帮助他把目标分成几步。)切题。故选G项。
【19题详解】
空缺的是本段的主题句,根据空后“Help your child write down his goals in an easy to follow form.”(帮助你的孩子以简单能懂的方式写下他的目标)所以这里选B(制作一个能看见的目标提示。)为本段的小标题。故选B项。
【20题详解】
空前“A really simple way is to have your child draw a ladder on a piece of paper, writing his goal at the top and each step to that goal on the rungs (梯级).”(一个很简单的方法就是在纸上画一个梯子,在顶部写下他的目标,在横木上写下通向目标的每一步)可知选项承接上文说明这么作的作用是什么。故D(他在向顶部爬梯时他在接近目标。)切题。故选D项。
第三部分:语言知识应用(共两节,满分 30 分)
