“Beauty isn't about having a pretty face,” begins a motivational quote. “It's about having a pretty mind, a pretty heart, and a pretty soul. Oh, and pretty nails!”
That may be Angela Peters' motto. Last July, Peters, rolled her wheelchair into a nail salon (沙龙) at the Walmart shopping center in Burton to have her nails done. But Peters, who has cerebral palsy (脑瘫), was turned away. The salon told her that they were afraid it would be too difficult to properly paint her nails given that her hands kept shaking. What was meant to be a day of beauty for Peters was now a disappointment.
A Walmart cashier about to go on her break happened to see this. Ebony Harris recognized Peters as a Walmart regular. “She's just like everyone else. She wants to look pretty. So why can't she ” Harris said.
Harris approached Peters. “Do you want me to do your nails ” she asked.
A smile spread across Peters' face. “Yeah!” Harris led Peters into the supermarket, where they shopped for nail polish. They settled on a color that would catch every eye. They then made their way into a neighboring Subway, found a table for two, and started. Harris gently took Peters' hand into hers and carefully began painting her nails. “She moved her hands a little bit, and she kept saying she was sorry,” Harris said. “I told her, ‘Don't say that. You're fine.’ She makes me look at life and appreciate it much more than I have.”
Watching it all with surprise and admiration was Subway employee Tasia Smith. Smith was so taken by the scene that she wrote about it on Facebook. “She was so patient with her,” she wrote. “Thanks to the Walmart worker for making this beautiful girl's day!”

Trees are one of the oldest “citizens (公民)” of our Earth. They keep our air clean, reduce noise pollution, improve water quality and provide food and building materials.
Just like us, trees change a lot as they grow. At 1 to 3 years old, young trees learn how to protect themselves. For example, many trees grow thorns (刺) to warn animals not to go near Most young trees have large, deep green leaves so that they can catch enough sunlight and change it into their food and energy.
When trees are 4 years old, they begin to grow very rapidly and become strong enough to face challenges later in life. At the age of 15, trees become young adults. Afterwards, they grow more slowly and begin to produce flowers and fruit.
It is not until the tree is 20 to 25 years old that it becomes a real adult. The tree reaches its largest size. The adult tree gives us shade, oxygen and natural beauty; it is also a great place for a tree house, or a place for us to read a book, listen to music and so on. If we give the adult tree proper care, it will go on to live healthily for many years.
Gradually, trees begin to grow older and older and even die. At this time, they still have their important place in nature. When a tree becomes hollow (空心的) or part of it becomes dead, it provides a home to small animals and is a source of food for many other animals.
In many ways, the life of a tree is like our own life experience. When we are looking at the life of a tree, we learn that each period of life brings its own form of joy and challenge. So, let’s enjoy every minute of our life and take care of it like planting a tree!
8. When the trees are very young, some of them grow thorns to ______.

D. The young adult tree is a good place for a tree house and for us to read a book,
10. Why should we enjoy every minute of our life according to the last paragraph
A. Because our life is becoming better and better.
B. Because trees give us so much and make our world beautiful.
C. Because the life of a tree is similar to our own life experience.
D. Because each period of life brings its own form of pleasure and challenge.
11. What is the text mainly about

Artificial intelligence is set to benefit mankind in many ways. It will make everyday tasks easier and bring efficiency to various industries. It might just prove to be one of man’s greatest inventions. And yet, like any other technology, AI will also bring risks and dangers. When people mention that AI could be dangerous, most people think of scenarios from movies or books where an AI program decides to eliminate or conquer all humans.
In February 2018, a group of AI experts got together to discuss the potential misuse of AI. Their main concern was that criminals could use AI for a variety of evil purposes. Someone can use AI to create websites that could be used to steal people’s personal information. Another potential risk is faster hacking—AI programs could be taught to find loopholes in software and break into secure computer systems. Some of the risks were as dramatic as the ones we see in books and movies. For example, the experts mentioned automated terrorism (自动化的恐怖主义) by using drones or unmanned vehicles as weapons. Remote attacks using such devices could be made easier through the use of AI.
And finally, there were some concerns on the fact that AI can mimic voices as well. Last year US filmmaker Jordan Peele teamed up with BuzzFeed website to make a movie using AI techniques to copy former US president Barack Obama’s voice. They “had” him voice his opinions on the 2017 movie Black Panther and current US President Donald Trump. While in China, tech giant Baidu, has also developed a program called Deep Voice that can “copy” anyone’s voice by analyzing a 3.7-second audio sample.
Famous British physicist Stephen Hawking even thought AI could be the worst event in the history of our civilization. “Once humans develop artificial intelligence, it will take off and redesign itself at an alarming rate. Humans couldn’t compete and would be superseded, he told the BBC. However, Hawking suggested “I believe we can create AI for the good of the world. We simply need to be aware of the dangers, identify them, employ the best possible practice and management, and prepare for its consequences well in advance.”
Actually, AI technology is making great progress in terms of the three-stage development of artificial intelligence. It is unlikely that fully developing AI would make it hard for mankind to survive. After all, without human intelligence, AI cannot even develop itself, let alone replace human civilization.
12. According to the text, which of the following is NOT the risk brought by AI
A. AI can be used to create websites to steal people’s personal information.
B. AI can help criminals to break into secure computer systems without permission.
C. AI can be used by terrorists to carry out terrorist attacks.
D. AI can be used to clone humans.
13. What does the underlined word “mimic” in paragraph 3 mean
A. imitate B. disturb
C. record D. change
14. What can we infer from Stephen Hawking’s words
A. AI is the best invention in the history of our civilization.
B. AI is not as intelligent and creative as humans.
C. AI can identify the dangers in advance.
D. AI will benefit the world if under careful management.
15. Which best describes the author’s attitude towards the future of AI
A. Worried. B. Indifferent.
C. Positive. D. Negative.
D 13. A 14. D 15. C
Someone can use AI to create websites that could be used to steal people’s personal information. Another potential risk is faster hacking—AI programs could be taught to find loopholes in software and break into secure computer systems. Some of the risks were as dramatic as the ones we see in books and movies. For example, the experts mentioned automated terrorism by using drones or unmanned vehicles as weapons.(有人可以使用人工智能创建网站,用来窃取人们的个人信息。
从下文using AI techniques to copy former US president Barack Obama’s voice. 故选A。
However, Hawking suggested “I believe we can create AI for the good of the world. We simply need to be aware of the dangers, identify them, employ the best possible practice and management, and prepare for its consequences well in advance.”(然而,霍金表示:“我相信我们可以为了世界的利益而创造人工智能。我们只需要意识到这些危险,识别它们,采用最好的做法和管理,并提前做好应对后果的准备。”)可知我们可以从斯蒂芬·霍金的话中推断,如果精心管理,人工智能将造福世界。故选D。
【15题详解】
推理判断题。根据最后一段It is unlikely that fully developing AI would make it hard for mankind to survive.(人工智能的全面发展不太可能让人类难以生存。)
如文中常用refer to,be called或that’s to say,such as等。
② 逻辑猜词可以根据同义词、反义词、因果关系词等猜测词义,例如,similarly,the same as,but,however,while,on the other hand,since ,because等,所猜词与这些提示词前/后面部分的含义一样、相反或是前因后果。
如第二小题,从下文using AI techniques to copy former US president Barack Obama’s voice. 故选A。

Basketball is a team sport that requires cooperation, skills, and endurance, which is a great way to stay physically active and socialize. I love the sense of accomplishment I feel when I hit a game — winning shot or contribute to my team’s victory. Furthermore, it is also a sport that can be played by people of all ages and abilities.

I had always prided myself on my sharp tongue and brilliant response whether in class debates or casual arguments. Thus, when I was selected to represent the school in the national debate series, I was naturally extremely confident of myself.
All the members in my team were good speakers. We had an experienced teacher who trained us well. But I was undoubtedly the most outstanding speaker. In each of the rounds that I debated in, all the judges selected me as the best one. This meant that my confidence was the highest by the time we found ourselves with one week to train before the finals. I had every reason to believe that I would be voted the best speaker for the debate series.
I began to be self-important about the whole business and started behaving that way with my team-mates. I would laugh at Eton’s poor debating style. I would complain of Vivian’s slow response. I saw myself as the natural debater who would be disappointed by their bad performance.
As the finals drew near, I became more and more dissatisfied with my team. I began missing practices. My teacher was worried. My teammates were panicked. However, they had no choice but to rely on me to win the finals. Even if they would love to remove me from the team they could not because there was no replacement good enough.
The day of the finals finally came. I was very excited that I was able to finally show off my debating skills. Everyone was expecting my performance. They knew that I was praised to be the one most likely to win the best speaker for the debate series.

But the reality was not something that I had ever imagined. Due to lack of training, I failed to get the key point of my speech, for which I wasn’t well prepared. I didn’t know what to say and my mind just went blank. I was so nervous that I just stood there. I felt all the people present were looking at me with strange eyes. I was very embarrassed and shed big big sweat.
Paragraph 2:
Suddenly, a comforting hand from behind held mine. It came from one of my teammates. He whispered to me, “Don’t be nervous and don’t be afraid. All of us are here to support you and cheer you up. I’m here to help you.” At this time, I realized the mistakes I had made before. I shouldn’t be too confident in myself. I should have humbly trained more with my teammates. At the moment, I was forgiven by my teammates. I pulled myself together, quickly straightened out my ideas and finished my speech. I saw all my teammates applaud for me and I was moved to tears.

They keep our air clean reduce noise pollution, improve water quality and provide food and building materials.

D. The young adult tree is a good place for a tree house and for us to read a book,
10. Why should we enjoy every minute of our life according to the last paragraph
A. Because our life is becoming better and better.
B. Because trees give us so much and make our world beautiful.
