It was a cold Saturday night in February. Some 200 New Yorkers carefully made their way to the reservoir (水库) in the hopes of catching a glimpse of the magical snowy owl, who had touched down in the park the week before in what was reported as the first visit there by the species in more than 130 years.
Except for a few excited screams from children, people were quiet — patiently awaiting the owl’s arrival at the reservoir’s north gatehouse. The snowy owl did not disappoint. She flew down from the darkness and surveyed the water and the people holding phones and cameras before taking off into the night to the applause of her many fans. They simply wanted to see this lovely creature whose improbable appearance seemed to signify hope after the lockdown.
New Yorkers who had long taken Central Park for granted felt a renewed love for this rectangle of green in the heart of the big city and, of course, its amazing wildlife. That the park is a beautiful and essential refuge is something that humans have only come to fully appreciate during these recent times of uncertainty.
Central Park was originally planned and constructed during another difficult time in the nation’s history — in the years before and during the American Civil War. Unlike many European parks that had originally been built for the aristocracy (贵族), Central Park was designed as a public space. In its chief architect Frederick Law Olmsted’s words, the poor and rich alike could “easily go there after their day’s work is done” and “stroll for an hour, seeing, hearing, and feeling nothing of the noise of the streets.”
As spring turns into summer, we see people sitting on the grass or benches — catching some sun, having family picnics, or tapping away on their laptops and iPads. Just being in proximity to other people in Central Park gave us a sense of community — the sense that we would somehow persevere.
4. What did people do in Central Park on that Saturday night
A. They cheered for each other. B. They paid their first visit.
C. They came for a rare sight. D. They appreciated a water event.
5. What does the author mainly intend to do in Paragraph 4
A. Give some examples. B. Make a comparison.
C. Introduce a new opinion. D. Add background information.
6. What do the underlined words “in proximity to” in Paragraph 5 mean
A. close to B. free from
C. at a distance from D. in comparison with
7 Which of the following is a suitable title for the text
A. Find Refuge in Central Park
B. Take Your Breath by Snow Owl
C. Trace Central Park to difficult times
D. Meet an improbable “visitor” in person
C
A new project aims to create a computer replica of an entire city. It will allow experts to perform real-time resilience testing to see how infrastructure will perform in the face of challenges such as climate change and population growth.
Known as the “digital twin”, the technology has already been adopted by Formula One teams and engine makers like Rolls Royce, but its use to this degree didn’t exist.
A partnership between Newcastle University and Northumbrian Water will recreate Newcastle based on data from across the city and test its resilience in possible emergencies. Professor Chris Kilsby said, “You can try lots of things with the twin in the case of a city. I think of it as a replica that you can play with and do unimaginable things to see what would happen. The changes can be seen immediately — from observing what would happen if the river Tyne rises by a few meters to what the city would look like if the population has aged over a certain period of time. It could also be used to model human behavior, for example, determining the most likely roads people would use in the event of a food.”
Newcastle University is working on a data platform with lots of dynamic parts like traffic, water, population, etc. Much of the data is coming from the university’s Urban Observatory project, which has monitors all over the city checking pollution, water quality and biodiversity.
In 2012 an event known locally as the “Toon monsoon” took place, with a month’s worth of rain falling in two hours during the evening rush hour, causing 8 m worth of damage. The Toon monsoon caused a breakdown to the city because we just didn’t design anything for that sort of event. There was no one to blame. The city just couldn’t resist the heavy rain.
The digital twin will allow the city not only to react in real time to such strange weather events, but also to test its resilience in endless potential future emergencies.
Chris Jones, research and development manager at Northumbrian Water, imagined the project’s “amazing possibilities”, saying that in time it could be applied to any city with accessible data.
8. What do we know about the “digital twin” from the first two paragraphs
A. It is a computer system. B. It is not new to us.
C. It predicts extreme weather. D. It has met with many challenges.
9. What will Newcastle University do in the project according to the passage
A. Offering big data about the city
B. Advocating the new technology.
C. Making up the loss caused by flood.
D. Working out plans for future emergencies.
10. Why is the “Toon monsoon” mentioned here
A. To draw people’s attention to the terrible loss of the city.
B. To warn people of the potential harm of heavy rain.
C. To indicate the new project’s significance.
D. To show the digital twin’s weakness.
11. What is Chris Jones’ attitude towards the “digital twin”
A. Cautious. B. Opposed. C. Neutral. D. Supportive.
D
Arthur Conan Doyle
Arthur Conan Doyle is an icon of British literature, world renowned for his crime fiction creation, “Sherlock Holmes”. His ability to create exciting stories filled with mystery still resonates with readers today, and modern reincarnations (再生) in both film and television mean Holmes is as popular as ever. The creation of such an extraordinary world would be an impossible task for most, so where did Doyle find the inspirations behind its conception
The topics, characters and events that unfold within Doyle’s creations may seem far removed from you or I, but for Arthur, they were much closer to home. The main inspiration for Holmes was Arthur’s professor at Edinburgh Medical School, Dr. Joseph Bell. The doctor, armed with fantastic scientific knowledge and remarkable abilities in observation and deduction (演绎), would know someone’s occupation and habits from the tiniest details. On one occasion, he shocked his class by deducing the occupation of a patient simply from his accent, schedule, and hands. Additionally, working with murder investigations, illnesses and dead bodies through his studies, Doyle became very knowledgeable about this area.
Since school, Doyle’s talent as a writer was clear as fellow pupils paid him in sweets just to continue his stories, so you would have to assume that the success of Sherlock on the national stage brought Doyle great happiness, right
Well, not quite. Few people know that it didn’t take long for Doyle to get frustrated with the character. While he ranked his work highly, he actually felt that his career had, “gone off the rails” and wrote to his mother saying, “I must save my mind for better things.” Doyle saw Sherlock as an unwelcome distraction from more serious work which is why he killed him off in The Final Problem. Holmes and Moriarty plunge to their deaths at the Reichenbach Falls and Sherlock Holmes was finished.
But, as with any Holmes tale, there is a twist! Fans were extremly angry and canceled their subscriptions for The Strand Magazine in record numbers. The continuous pressure from fans and publishers finally led Doyle to publish a new story, The Hound of Baskervilles, in 1901. This, however, was set before the death of Sherlock so the complete resurrection (复活) happened in 1903, with The Adventure of the Empty House, in which it is revealed that only Moriarty fell and Holmes faked his death.
12. Which of the following is true according to the passage
A. The success of Sherlock Holmes made Doyle instant famous.
B. The invention of film and television has helped to promote Sherlock Holmes.
C. Doyle found inspiration mainly from Dr. Joseph Bell and his teacher in school.
D. Doyle’s writing capabilities was long recognized by his peers.
13. Why did Doyle feel frustrated with Sherlock Holmes
A. The character was not as keen as Dr. Joseph Bell.
B He couldn’t make much money from the book.
C. The book kept him from writing serious literature.
D. He was attacked by the fans of the book.
14. What can you infer from the passage
A. Doyle didn’t show talent for writing until he met Dr. Joseph Bell.
B. The success of Sherlock Holmes was bitter-sweet to Doyle.
C. Many movies are adapted from the story of Sherlock Holmes.
D. Doyle was involved in murder investigations in order to write Sherlock Holmes.
15. This passage is most probably taken from ________.
A. a booklet of Doyle museum B. a website for fans of Holmes
C. a literary magazine D. an academic report

根据短文内容,从短文后的选项中选出能填入空白处的最佳选项。选项中有两项为多余选项。
When it comes to Al in business, we often hear about it in relation to automation and loss of jobs, but in what ways is Al changing companies and the larger economy that don’t involve doom-and-gloom mass unemployment predictions ____16____ Here are a few ways Al is aiding companies without replacing employees.
Better hiring practices
____17____ There are experiments that show that, naturally, the results of interviews are much more biased than what Al does. In addition, AI looks at resumes in greater numbers than humans would be able to. And it selects the more promising candidates. One company that’s doing this is called Blendoor. It uses analytics to help identify where there may be bias in the hiring process.
More effective marketing.
Some AI software can analyze and optimize marketing email subject lines to increase open rates. One company in the UK, Phrasee, claims their software can outperform humans by up to 10 percent when it comes to email open rates. This can mean millions more in revenue. There are also companies like Acquisio, which analyzes advertising performance across multiple channels like Adwords, Bing, and social media and makes adjustments or suggestions about where advertising funds will yield the best results. ____18____
Saving customers money.
Energy companies can use AI to help customers reduce their electricity bills, saving their money while helping the environment. ____19____ Insurance companies, meanwhile, can base their premiums on AI models that more accurately access risk. Before, they might not insure the ones who felt like high risk or charge them too much, or they would charge them too little, and then it would cost the company money.
____20____
Several companies, particularly in energy and transportation, use AI image processing technology to inspect infrastructure and prevent equipment failure or leaks before they happen. If they fail first and then you fix them, it’s very expensive. You want to predict if something needs attention now and point to where it’s useful for employees to go.
A. If you’re doing research, you can have Al go out and look for relevant sources and information.
B. Companies are using artificial intelligence to remove some of the unconscious bias from hiring decisions.
C. Companies can also optimize their own energy use and cut down on the cost of electricity.
D. These are tools that help people use data, not a replacement for people.
E. Protecting and maintaining infrastructure.
F. A recent survey has found that companies currently use Al more often in computer-to-computer activities than in automating human activities.
G. More energy intensive to produce.

The day when the jobs were handed out was one of the most exciting moments for all the children in the class. It took place during the first week of the term. Every kid was given a job for which they would be responsible during the rest of that school year.
Some jobs were more interesting than others, and the children were eager to be given one of the best ones. When giving them out, the teacher took into account which pupils had been most responsible during the previous year. Rita, a kind and quiet girl, had carried out the teacher’s instructions perfectly. All the children thought Rita would be given the best job. But there was a big surprise. Each child received a normal job like preparing the computer for lessons, cleaning the blackboard, or looking after one of the pets. But Rita’s job was very different. She was given a little box containing some sand and one ant. Though the teacher insisted that this ant was very special, Rita couldn’t help feeling disappointed. With tears welling up in her eyes, she stood up and asked why she was given such an insignificant task.
The teacher hugged her, kissed her on her forehead and said, “If you can take good care of the ant, you are sure to win a reward. After all, you have to do what are apparently the smallest tasks before being given the most important ones. I believe you can make it.” Most of her classmates felt sorry for her. They said it was unfair for her.
However Rita preferred to show the teacher her error by doing something special with that job of little interest. “I will turn this little task into something great,”Rita said to herself. So, Rita started investigating everything about her little ant, modified the little box to make it perfect for the ant and gave the ant the best food, and it ended up growing quite a bit bigger than anyone had expected.
One day in spring the classroom door opened and in came a man, who looked very important. The teacher interrupted the class with great joy, and said, “This is Doctor Martinez, an entomologist (昆虫学家) from Florida Natural Reserve. He has something special to announce.

A. close to B. free from
C. at a distance from D. in comparison with
7. Which of the following is a suitable title for the text
A. Find Refuge in Central Park
B. Take Your Breath by Snow Owl
C. Trace Central Park to difficult times
D. Meet an improbable “visitor” in person
【答案】4. C 5. D 6. A 7. A

A new project aims to create a computer replica of an entire city. It will allow experts to perform real-time resilience testing to see how infrastructure will perform in the face of challenges such as climate change and population growth.
Known as the “digital twin” the technology has already been adopted by Formula One teams and engine makers like Rolls Royce, but its use to this degree didn’t exist.
A. Cautious. B. Opposed. C. Neutral. D. Supportive.
【答案】8. B 9. A 10. C 11.

B. He couldn’t make much money from the book.
【答案】12. D 13. C 14. B 15. C

第二节(共5小题,每小题2.5分,满分12.5分)

However, Rita preferred to show the teacher her error by doing something special with that job of little interest. “I will turn this little task into something great,”Rita said to herself. So, Rita started investigating everything about her little ant, modified the little box to make it perfect for the ant and gave the ant the best food, and it ended up growing quite a bit bigger than anyone had expected.
One day in spring, the classroom door opened and in came a man, who looked very important. The teacher interrupted the class with great joy, and said, “This is Doctor Martinez, an entomologist (昆虫学家) from Florida Natural Reserve. He has something special to announce.

【答案】All the students looked at the doctor with curiosity. The doctor greeted the class with a satisfied look and announced. “Congratulations! Your class has been chosen to go along with me, this summer, on a journey to the tropical rainforest, where we will be investigating all kinds of insects.” At the sight of the puzzled students, he explained, “Among all the schools of this region, your class has best cared for the little ant given to you. You’ve won the competition!” Wonderful news, indeed!
Hearing the good news, the whole class was filled with joy and celebration. Everyone understood why the teacher had insisted that the ant was a special one. They thanked the teacher for thinking of entering them in the competition, and thanked Rita for having been so patient and responsible. And they also learnt that to be given the most important tasks, you have to know how to be responsible even in what are apparently the smallest tasks. And without doubt, it was Rita who was most pleased with this, having said to herself many times that she would turn the little job into something really great.
