The term “social distancing” has been at the center of public conversation for a while. But it’s not “social” distance we are trying to promote. It’s physical separation. In fact, preserving social ties — even at a distance — is essential for both mental and physical health. The results of an analytic review published in 2017 indicate that a lack of social support is on a par with smoking cigarettes as a risk factor for health.
Given this fact, how might we best stay connected with others while maintaining physical distance Would we be better off e-mailing a friend Making a phone call Having a video chat In our study, Nick Epley and I tested whether the media through which people interact affects their sense of connection and how expectations of certain technologies impact the communication media they choose to use.
In our experiment, we asked participants to reconnect with someone that they hadn’t interacted with recently, either by e-mail or over the phone. Participants first made predictions about what it would be like to get in touch if they connected in these two ways. They generally believed that they’d feel more connected when interacting over the phone than by e-mail. But they also predicted that talking on the phone could be more uncomfortable than sending an e-mail. Although these participants believed that talking encouraged stronger bonds, most of them said they’d rather send an e-mail than call the person up. It seemed that fears about awkwardness pushed individuals towards text-based methods for communicating.
In the next part of the experiment, we had participants use one randomly determined mode of communication to actually reconnect and then tracked them after they had done so. We found that people did form meaningfully stronger bonds when interacting over the phone than by e-mail. Importantly, though, there was no difference in the amount of discomfort when they were reconnecting over the phone. The next time you think about how best to connect, consider calling or having a video chat. Feelings of social connection are preferably facilitated by voice rather than a keyboard.

Exams make us anxious. The silence of the hall; the ticking of the clock; the proud expression of the person sitting at the neighboring desk who has finished 15 minutes early. It therefore seems hardly surprising that those who worry about taking tests do worse than those who do not.
What is, perhaps, surprising, according to research recently published by Maria Theobald, is that it is not the pressure of the exam hall which causes the problem. It is the pressure of review.
Dr. Theobald worked with 309 students who were preparing for their final state exam, the most important that they take. During the 100 days before that, the students used a digital-learning platform which presented them with old exam questions and recorded their performance. They also sat a mock exam (模拟考) 40 days before the real thing. To know their levels of anxiety, they were asked every day including the days of the mock and the real exam to give themselves 1-5 points to questions like “How much do I feel tense and nervous ”
Dr. Theobald found that anxiety on the day of the test did not predict exam performance at all. What predicted it was the level of knowledge a student showed in the mock and the earlier digital-learning activities. Those who performed well in these also did well in the real thing, no matter how anxious they were on the day. What actually affected students, it turned out, were high levels of anxiety during the weeks before the exam took place. The greater a student’s anxiety on the days before the exam, the lower his or her knowledge-gain was during that period, leaving that student with less material to review during the exam itself.
To reduce the anxiety, Dr. Theobald proposes a two-fold strategy for students. First, they can raise their belief in their own abilities by reminding themselves of just how much they know. Second, they can decrease the importance of the test by reminding themselves that, while it is important, it is not a life-or-death situation.
8. What causes bad exam results according to the research
A. The noisy clock. B. The stressful review.
C. The silent classroom. D. The annoying neighbor.
9. What is paragraph 3 mainly about
A. Research process. B. Research findings.
C. Research background. D. Research significance.
10. On which day(s) does anxiety affect exam performance the most
A. The day of the real exam. B. The day of the mock.
C. The days before the real exam. D. The days before the mock.
11. What does Dr. Theobald advise us to do to overcome exam anxiety
A. Prepare a lot for exams. B. Build up self-confidence.
C. Attach significance to tests. D. Remind ourselves of the time.
B 9. A 10. C 11. B

第二段提到“What is, perhaps, surprising, according to research recently published by Maria Theobald, is that it is not the pressure of the exam hall which causes the problem. It is the pressure of review.”(根据Maria Theobald最近发表的一项研究,也许令人惊讶的是,并不是考场的压力导致了这个问题。
Theobald worked with 309 students who were preparing for their final state exam, the most important that they take.”(Theobald博士与309名正在为他们的期末考试做准备的学生一起工作,这是他们所做的最重要的事情。);该段还提到“During the 100 days before that, the students used a digital-learning platform which presented them with old exam questions and recorded their performance.”(在此之前的100天里,学生们使用了一个数字学习平台,给他们提供了一些旧的考试问题,并记录了他们的表现。);该段最后一句提到“To know their levels of anxiety, they were asked every day including the days of the mock and the real exam to give themselves 1-5 points to questions like “How much do I feel tense and nervous ””(为了了解他们的焦虑程度,他们每天都被问到,包括模拟的日子,以及真正的考试,给他们自己1-5分的问题,比如“我有多大压力和紧张?”),由此判断,该段在陈述该项实验的过程。故选A。
第四段提到“What actually affected students, it turned out, were high levels of anxiety during the weeks before the exam took place. ”(事实证明,真正影响学生的是考试前几周的高度焦虑。)由此判断,在考试前一段时间学生的焦虑程度会非常高。对故选C。
【11题详解】
细节理解题。最后一段提到“First, they can raise their belief in their own abilities by reminding themselves of just how much they know.”(首先,他们可以通过提醒自己了解多少来提高他们对自己能力的信心。)
D
Art and science may seem like opposite things. One means the creative flow of ideas, and the other means cold, hard data — some people believe. In fact, the two have much in common. Now, a study finds art can help students remember better what they learned in science class.
Mariale Hardiman, an education specialist, noticed that students who used art in the class listened more carefully. They might ask more questions. They might volunteer more ideas. What’s more, students seemed to remember more of what they had been taught when their science lessons had involved art. To prove that, Hardiman teamed up with some researchers and six local schools.
In the experiment, the researchers worked with teachers in 16 fifth-grade classrooms. They provided traditional science lessons and art-focused ones. In a traditional science class, for example, students might read the information from a book aloud. In the art-focused one, they might sing the information instead.
The team randomly assigned(分配) each of the 350 students to either a traditional science class or an art-focused one. Students then learned science using that way for the whole unit — about three weeks. When they changed to a new topic, they also changed to the other type of class. This way, each student had both an art-focused class and a traditional one. Every unit was taught in both ways, to different groups of students. This enabled the researchers to see how students did in both types of classes.
The team found that students who started off in traditional classes performed better after they moved into an art-focused class. But those who started in an art-focused class did well even when they went back to a traditional science class. These students appeared to use some of the art techniques after going back to a traditional class. Classroom teachers reported that many students continued to sketch(画速写) or sing to help remember the information. “It suggests that the arts may help students apply creative ways of learning on their own,” Hardiman said.

People were told from an early age, “You learn from your mistakes.” But is this true
The answer is “yes” — failure can be a teachable moment. ____16____ It doesn’t feel good. So we react to failure in emotional ways, like giving up on a task, telling ourselves we don’t care, or finding fault with the task. This is self-protective, according to Hallgeir Sjastad, a professor of psychology and leadership at the Norwegian School of Economics. He says, “____17____ So when we fail, it causes a serious threat to our self-image.”
Fortunately, there is a research to suggest that there are some strategies to help us overcome the emotional barriers around failure. ____18____ Instead of asking “Why did I fail ”, we could ask “Why did Sam fail ”, for example. Multiple studies by the University of Michigan show that adopting a third-person perspective helps to soften our negative emotional reactions, allowing us to look at failure more objectively.
____19____ It led to better levels of motivation and academic success in the test groups. The group of adults and children were asked to give advice based on their own failures. Professors found that the satisfaction of helping others “forces people to connect with their experience and what they have learned”.
The writer Samuel Beckett once said: “Fail again, fail better.” But it now seems that we should be saying: “Fail again, fail smarter”. Failure is an unavoidable part of life. ____20____
A. But learning from our mistakes is very hard because we don’t like to fail.
B. One of them is to adopt a third-person view.
C. You can question others instead of yourselves.
D. But the road to success is easier to find by learning to overcome the emotional barriers.
E. A second strategy involves offering advice to others who are in the same position as us.
F. But how to overcome them is a problem we can’t solve alone.
G. Most of us want to think of ourselves as capable.
A 17. G 18. B 19. E 20. D
根据空后“It doesn’t feel good. So we react to failure in emotional ways, like giving up on a task, telling ourselves we don’t care, or finding fault with the task.(感觉不太好。所以我们对失败的反应是情绪化的,比如放弃一项任务,告诉自己我们不在乎,或者找任务的毛病。)”可知,下文讲述的是面对失败我们的反应是情绪化的。选项A“But learning from our mistakes is very hard because we don’t like to fail.(但是从错误中学习是非常困难的,因为我们不喜欢失败。)” 故选A。
根据空前“This is self-protective, according to Hallgeir Sjastad, a professor of psychology and leadership at the Norwegian School of Economics. (挪威经济学院心理学和领导力教授Hallgeir Sjastad表示,这是一种自我保护。)”可知,教授认为对失败的反应是一种自我保护。选项G“Most of us want to think of ourselves as capable.(我们大多数人都认为自己有能力。)”指的是我们对自己的感觉都很好,和空后的“So when we fail, it causes a serious threat to our self-image(所以当我们失败时,它会对我们的自我形象造成严重威胁。)”
根据下文“Instead of asking “Why did I fail ”, we could ask “Why did Sam fail ”, for example. Multiple studies by the University of Michigan show that adopting a third-person perspective helps to soften our negative emotional reactions, allowing us to look at failure more objectively.(不要问“我为什么失败了?”,我们可以问“Sam为什么失败了?”,例如。密歇根大学的多项研究表明,采用第三人称视角有助于缓和我们的负面情绪反应,让我们更客观地看待失败。)”可推测,空处提到的策略指的是采用第三人称视角。选项B“One of them is to adopt a third-person view.(其中之一是采用第三人称视角。)”
根据下文“It led to better levels of motivation and academic success in the test groups. The group of adults and children were asked to give advice based on their own failures. Professors found that the satisfaction of helping others “forces people to connect with their experience and what they have learned”.(在测试组中,它导致了更高水平的动机和学业上的成功。这组成年人和孩子被要求根据自己的失败给出建议。教授们发现,帮助他人的满足感“迫使人们把自己的经历和所学到的东西联系起来”。)”可知,本段介绍了第二种策略,即根据自己的失败给出建议。选项E“A second strategy involves offering advice to others who are in the same position as us.(第二种策略是向与我们处境相同的人提供建议。)”
根据上文内容“The writer Samuel Beckett once said: “Fail again, fail better.” But it now seems that we should be saying: “Fail again, fail smarter”. Failure is an unavoidable part of life.(作家塞缪尔·贝克特曾经说过:“再失败,失败得更好。”但现在看来,我们应该说:“再次失败,更聪明地失败”。失败是生活中不可避免的一部分。)”可知,上文认为我们可以聪明地失败。选项D“But the road to success is easier to find by learning to overcome the emotional barriers.(但是,学会克服情感障碍,通往成功的道路就更容易找到。)”

“Not fair.” Wendi said sadly. “You promised we could go to the climbing park.”
“But the weather lady says it will rain in the afternoon,” Mum said.
“She must get it wrong,” Wendi complained, but suddenly, the rain started. “Oh,” Wendi was surprised, looking up at the sky.
“We’ll go to the climbing park another day,” Mum watched the rain.
“How does she know about the weather ” Wendi asked.
“Well, she has got a weather station, I think,” Mum was not sure.
“Grandpa might know. I’ll ask him,” Wendi said.
“We can build a little weather station in the garden, Wendi,” Grandpa explained. “You’ll need a wind vane (风向标) to see how the wind is blowing, and we can make it by ourselves. And we also need to prepare a rain gauge to measure how much rain has fallen. And, I’ve got a good thermometer for outdoors.”
“A thermometer ” Wendi said.
Grandpa laughed. “A thermometer measures the temperature. And last of all, we need a barometer (气压计), Wendi.” “A barometer tells us what the air pressure is. I’ve got one, too,” Grandpa explained.
“But what is air pressure ” Wendi asked.
“Well, if the air pressure changes, the weather will change,” Grandpa answered.
When everything was ready, Grandpa and Wendi got down to business, and soon a little garden weather station came into being.
Grandpa gave Wendi a list and said, “You have to keep a list of all the wind, rain and temperature changes. That’s when you’ll see how the weather is changing. And then you really will be a weathergirl.”
Rainy, Windy, Sunny, Snowy, Hot, Cold, Cloudy, Stormy, Very Windy…

They went out and invited Wendi to make a big snowman with them. “Thank you, Wendi, weathergirl. We got our snow,” they said. Wendi smiled and wondered if she should tell her friends, who were having fun in the snow, that in a day or two it would get warmer, and then the snow would go.

Wendi painted many cards for all the things a weathergirl has to say.
Hearing the news, all Wendi’s friends visited her garden weather station.
