Looking around her childhood neighborhood, Shanta Mack, human resources associate with Entergy couldn’t help but share, “As a teenager, I never saw neighbors or local organizations come to my community to volunteer, but when the request was put out to revitalize (复活) the same streets that I grew up on, I jumped at the opportunity.”
This year, Entergy employee volunteers celebrated Martin Luther King, Jr. Day with a series of volunteer events across the New Orleans Metro Area over a three-day weekend. Mack and her sixteen-year-old daughter Aalaina joined the United Way of Southeast Louisiana and other community members to help develop an urban garden and refresh a local playground in the Desire Area.
Mack quickly realized that her old neck of the woods, which was once full of life, did not look the same as it did when she rode bikes with her friends to the local candy store. It was important for her to not only show her college-bound daughter where she grew up, but she also wanted her daughter to experience what it felt like to give back, especially to her own community. “Volunteering with my daughter allows us to bond (联系), but I also want her to take these opportunities to invest (投资) her time when she can, meet new people, learn new skills and gain volunteer hours for her college applications, ”said Mack.
The mother and daughter worked hand-in-hand with other volunteers to build a picnic table for locals to have lunch or rest and a stage for local artists to perform during community festivities.
“The weekend was the perfect opportunity to volunteer and follow Dr. King — and others who have made sacrifices to bring equality and diversity to our communities. I was happy to get out to represent Entergy for MLK Day and will continue to do my part in serving our community, ”said Mack.

Autonomous driving vehicles may sound like science fiction, but they are racing into our daily lives sooner than many expected. Nowadays, people can hail (打车) robotaxis by using ride-hailing apps on their mobile phones in certain areas of Wuzhen, Zhejiang province.
All they need to do is to input pickup and drop-off points and the number of passengers and—a self-driving taxi approaches—with a safety operator sitting behind the wheel to monitor the vehicle for safety.
The vehicle runs smoothly and is capable of fully recognizing stop signs as it automatically decelerates before finally coming to a stop. As traffic lights change from red to green, the taxi moves through the crossings.
Last December, Baidu officially opened its Apollo Park in Wuzhen, which serves as an important R&D, design, application and testing base for autonomous vehicles in the Yangtze River Delta region.
As the fourth demonstration base for intelligent-connected vehicles built by Baidu in China, the park is equipped with facilities such as a vehicle-road coordination (协调) system, remote vehicle control platform, operation center and 5G-powered cockpit control system.
Baidu plans to expand Apollo Go services to 65 cities in 2025, and 100 in 2030, said Robin Li, CEO of the company. “The massively reduced costs will enable us to deploy (调动) tens of thousands of autonomous vehicles across China. We are moving toward a future where taking a robotaxi will be half the cost of taking a taxi today.”
So far, Baidu Apollo’s L4 autonomous vehicles have run more than 36 million kilometers, with 718 autonomous driving permits in China, including 571 for carrying passengers. L4 autonomy means the vehicle can drive by itself under most circumstances, without a human driver.
Baidu Apollo has rolled out robotaxi ride-hailing services in more than 10 cities, including Beijing, Shanghai, Guangzhou and Shenzhen.
Yang Diange, a professor from the School of Vehicle and Mobility at Tsinghua University, said the commercial operation of self-driving vehicles will promote the innovation of technologies, and help companies explore reasonable business models, thus allowing autonomous driving technologies to create more value.
28. What does the underlined word “decelerate” mean in Paragraph 3

The eruption spawned a 4-foot tsunami that hit Tonga’s capital of Nuku’alofa, which is about 40 miles south of the volcano. A deafening noise from the eruption was heard across the Pacific Ocean, reaching as far away as Alaska, according to the Associated Press (AP).

Saturday’s eruption also sent an ash mass to an altitude of nearly 12 miles, New Zealand Prime Minister Jacinda Ardern told the AP. New Zealand officials hoped to send military flights over the volcano to assess its status, followed by aid and supplies for Tonga, where water supplies may be polluted, Ardern added.

67. 阅读下面材料,根据其内容和所给段落开头语续写两段,使之构成一篇完整的短文。
Tom was a fishing amateur. He once came to a wet place in the roadless forest to fish with his friends William and Tony. They put up their tent upon the top of a pine-clothed mountain and then began fishing. However, none of them was successful fisherman. They were either made lazy by the sun or wet by the rain. After two days of fishing, they got nothing. Finally they ate the last bit of bacon and smoked and burned the last fearful corncake. If they didn’t get anything to eat, they would have to starve.
Immediately Tom volunteered to stay and hold the camp while the remaining two should go miles away to a farmhouse for supplies. Hearing Tom’s suggestion, the two friends gazed at him jokingly. “ There is only one of you-be careful, for bears may appear and keep you company!” Tom didn’t take what they said seriously. Then the two men disappeared down the hill in the known direction of a distant wooden house.
Night came, but the two men did not return. Tom sat close to his companion, the campfire. He lit a cigarette and felt a thousand shadows were about to come towards him. Suddenly he heard the approach of something unknown, rackling the small branches and rustling (使沙沙作响) the dead leaves. Feeling a bit scared, Tom rose slowly to his feet. His cigarette dropped from his mouth and his knees shook with fear. “Hah!” he shouted in a loud voice in the hope of scaring his opponent away. A roar (咆哮) replied and a bear paced into the light of the fire.

Paragraph 2:
Tom breathed a sigh of relief
________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________
【答案】One possible version:
Tom supported himself upon a tree and observed his unexpected visitor. The bear was obviously a fighter, for the black of his coat had become brown with age. There was confidence in his small, twinkling eyes. Terrified as Tom was, he must save himself. He started running around the campfire, bear chasing after him. He was close to desperation when the tent fell down onto the burning fire, with the bear trapped inside. He then witnessed the burning tent racing in the direction of the lake, disappearing.
Tom breathed a sigh of relief. Maybe it was luck that saved him. Anyway, he was safe now. He rested for a while, rebuilt the fire and waited patiently for his friends. When they came back and saw the tent gone, they asked eagerly what had happened. Tom explained calmly everything as if it had not happened to him. “There is only one of me — and the bear keeps me company!” he said, lighting a cigarette again.

The mother and daughter worked hand-in-hand with other volunteers to build a picnic table for locals to have lunch or rest and a stage for local artists to perform during community festivities.
