A
She is widely seen as proof that good looks can last forever. But, at nearly 500 years of age, time_is_catching_up_with_the_Mona_Lisa.
The health of the famous picture, painted by Leonardo da Vinci (莱昂纳多·达·芬奇) in 1505, is getting worse by the year, according to the Louvre Museum (卢浮宫博物馆) where it is housed.“The thin, wooden panel on which the Mona Lisa is painted in oil has changed shape since experts checked it two years ago,” the museum said. Visitors have noticed the changes but repairing the world's most famous painting is not easy. Experts are not sure about the materials the Italian artist used and their current (现在的)chemical state.
Nearly 6 million people go to see the Mona Lisa every year, many attracted by the mystery of her smile. “It is very interesting that when you're not looking at her, she seems to be smiling, and then you look at her and she stops,” said Professor Margaret Livingstone of Harvard University.“It's because direct vision (视觉) is excellent at picking up detail, but less suited to looking at shadows. Da Vinci painted the smile in shadows.”
However, the actual history of the Mona Lisa is just as mysterious as the smile. Da Vinci himself loved it so much that he always carried it with him, until it was eventually sold to France's King Francis I in 1519.
In 1911, the painting was stolen from the Louvre by a former employee, who took it out of the museum hidden under his coat. He said he planned to return it to Italy. The painting was sent back to France two years later.
During World War Ⅱ, French hid the painting in small towns to keep it out of the hands of German forces.
Like many old ladies, the Mona Lisa has some interesting stories to tell.
【语篇解读】 随着岁月的流逝,名画“蒙娜丽莎”已受到了损坏。她还有一些秘密等待人们去揭开。
56.The underlined sentence in the first paragraph means the Mona Lisa________.
A.is losing its value
B.is being damaged after so many years
C.is getting more valuable with years passing
D.will rot away
57.Experts haven't any repairs on the Mona Lisa because________.
A.it is now in a poor chemical state
B.they don't know how to replace the wooden panel
C.they don't have the materials Da Vinci used
D.they are afraid it'll be done further damage
58.The smile of the Mona Lisa can only be seen________.
A.by indirect vision B.at a distance
C.by direct vision D.in shadows
答案 A [细节理解题。文章第四段提到,人们“正视”时,往往看不到“蒙娜丽莎”的微笑,原因是当时达·芬奇是在暗处作的画,因此只有人们“不正视”时,才能看到她的微笑。]
59.Which of the following is TRUE about Mona Lisa?
A.It was once taken away and hidden up by German forces.
B.Its painter himself loved it greatly and always kept it in a shade.
C.Mona Lisa stops smiling when you look at her wanting to see her smiles.
D.King Franc I bought it and planned to return it to Italy.
答案 C [细节理解题。由文章倒数第二段可以排除A项;根据第四段中的“Da Vinci himself loved it so much that he always carried it with him.”可排除B项;选项D与文章内容不符,故答案为C。]
B
Not all awards are as noble as the Nobels. Even though most countries have a system for recognising, honouring and rewarding people who have done something good in their countries, there are now hundreds of awards and awards ceremonies for all kinds of things.
The Oscars are probably the most famous, a time for the (mostly) American film industry to tell itself how good it is, an annual opportunity for lots of big stars to give each other awards and make tearful speeches. But it's not only films-now there are also Grammies, Brits, the Mercury Prize and the MTV and Q awards for music. In Britain, a writer who wins the Booker prize can expect to see their difficult, literary novel hit the bestseller lists and compete with“The Da Vinci Code”for popularity. The Turner Prize is an award for a British contemporary artist-each year it causes controversy by apparently giving lots of money to artists who do things like display their beds, put animals in glass cases or-this year-build a garden shed.
Awards don't only exist for the arts. There are now awards for Sports Personality of the Year, for European Footballer of the year and World Footballer of the Year. This seems very strange-sometimes awards can be good to give recognition to people who deserve it, or to help people who don't make a lot of money carry on their work without worrying about finances, but professional soccer players these days certainly aren't short of cash!
Many small towns and communities all over the world also have their own awards ceremonies, for local writers or artists, or just for people who have graduated from high school or got a university degree. Even the British Council has its own awards for“Innovation in English Language Teaching”.
Shakespeare never won a prize, nor did Leonardo da Vinci or Adam Smith or Charles Dickens. It would be possible to say, however, that in the past, scientists and artists could win“patronage”from rich people-a king or a lord would give the artist or scientist money to have them paint their palaces or help them develop new ways of making money. With the change in social systems across the world, this no longer happens. A lot of scientific research is now either funded by the state or by private companies. Perhaps award ceremonies are just the most recent face of this process. However, there is more to it than that. When a film wins an Oscar, many more people will go and see it, or buy the DVD. When a writer wins the Nobel Prize, many more people buy their books. When a group win the MTV awards, the ceremony is seen by hundreds of thousands of people across the world. The result? The group sell a lot more records.
Most awards ceremonies are now sponsored by big organisations or companies. This means that it is not only the person who wins the award who benefits, but also the sponsors. The MTV awards, for example, are great for publicising not only music, but also MTV itself! On the surface, it seems to be a“win-win”situation, with everyone being happy, but let me ask you a question-how far do you think that publicity and marketing are winning here, and how much genuine recognition of achievement is taking place?
【语篇解读】 各种名目的颁奖越来越多,但他们是否得到了大众的认可?
60.Which of the following awards often confuses the public by giving a prize to people who do unusual things?

Land Art, sometimes referred to as Earth Art or Earthworks, is a form of art which involves using physical landscapes to create art, taking art out of the museum and into the outside world. Modern Land Art movement really got going in the 1960s, when American artists began creating Land Art on a large scale. Today, works of modern Land Art can be seen all over the world, sometimes right alongside much older pieces of Land Art created by people who lived thousands of years ago.
Land art, which is not necessarily unchangeable, can take a number of forms. For example, in 1970 Robert Smithson created the Spiral Jetty(螺旋码头), made of a collection of stones and mud, in the Great Salt Lake. The American artist made a large jetty in a spiral shape which sticks out into the waters of the lake.
Reshaping the landscape is a common feature of Land Art. It can be created by moving components(组分)around. People can also add things to the environment to create Land Art, like salt, which is added to the Spiral Jetty. It is possible to use plants. In all cases, Land Art is immovable.
Land Art is designed to evolve(逐步形成), change, and eventually decay (衰落). That's one of the biggest differences between Land Art and most of the art one sees in the museums. Some works of art can exist only for a few hours or days. Others are exposed to rain and wind so that they evolve and decay over time, which is part of the attractiveness in the eyes of the artist.

Hi, TigerMom,
What puzzles you is actually a puzzle for many parents in China. My idea is that it is not quite right for you to do so.Although high grades are an important factor in evaluating students and for their future university admission, development in wisdom, emotion, health, and life attitude should never be ignored. There are many examples around us. Some all-A students in school have turned out not to be as successful in society as they were expected. The reason is often that the pressure from their parents allows them almost no time for other activities. Furthermore, punishment is by no means a wise choice to help them grow up mentally and physically.
So I suggest that you take your friends' advice. More importantly, let her live like a lovely girl; let her have more friends and social activities; and let her make mistakes of her own as we teenagers often do.
Yours Sincerely,
Li Hua

Text 10
Ladies and gentlemen,
Welcome to“English Salon”.Today we'll focus on our children, especially their health.
Experts say that students usually need eight to ten hours of sleep at night, but most Chinese students don't get that much. Some Chinese parents are usually happy to see their children studying late.It makes them think that their children work very hard. But not all parents are happy about this.Once a mother told us that every morning her 10-year-old boy puts up one finger with his eyes still closed, begging for one more minute of sleep.Like thousands of student“early birds”in China,he has to get up before six every morning.
A report shows that without a good night's sleep, students seem to be weaker than they should be.Many students have fallen asleep during class at one time or another.Too much homework is not the only reason why students stay up late. Some watch TV or play computer games late into the night.
Experts have said that students should develop good study habits, and some clever students never study late. They are able to work well in class.

阅读下列短文,从每题所给的四个选项(A、B、C和D)中,选出最佳选项。A
Alice Walker makes her living by writing, and her poems, short stories, and novels have won many awards and fellowships for her. She was born in Eatonton, Georgia. She went to public schools there, and then to Spelman College in Atlanta before coming to New York to attend Sarah Lawrence College, from which she graduated in 1966. For a time she lived in Jackson, Mississippi with her lawyer husband and small daughter. About Langston Hughes, American Poet, her first book for children, she says,After my first meeting with Langston Hughes I vowed I would write a book about him for children someday. Why? Because I, at twenty-two, knew next to nothing of his work, and he didn't scold me; he just gave me a stack of his book. And he was kind to me; I will always be grateful that in his absolute warmth and generosity he fulfilled my deepest dream (and need) of what a poet should be.
“To me he is not dead at all. Hardly a day goes by that I don't think of him or speak of him. Once, just before he died, when he was sick with the flu, I took him a sack full of oranges. The joy I felt in giving that simple gift is undiminished by time. He said he liked oranges, too.”

Despite its short history, there is a lot of good English poetry around. The earliest English poetry was written in a kind of English that is now difficult to understand. Modern English started around the time of William Shakespeare, towards the end of the sixteenth century. The seventeenth century was a great time for English poetry. Shakespeare is most famous for his plays. His sonnets, however, belong to the best English poetry: in the next generation of great English poets we meet John Donne. Chinese readers admire his works because of his use of surprising images that reminds them of the works of poets such as Su Dongpo. Before the end of the century, there was another famous writer, John Milton. Once published, his work became famous for the absence of rhyme at the end of each line. In the eighteenth century it was Alexander Pope who wrote the finest poetry in England.
The next period that produced a great number of fine poets was the nineteenth century. Greatly loved in China are the English Romantic poets. Although they were all born in the eighteenth century, they wrote their major works in the early years of the nineteenth century. John Keats died at a very young age in 1821: while William Wordsworth, who spent much of his time in the English Lake District, lived to the age of 80 and died in 1850. The nature poems by William Wordsworth, George Gordon Byron's Isles of Greece and the sonnets and long poems by John Keats have long been favourites. The style and atmosphere in their poems have often led to comparisons with poets such as Du Fu and Li Bai.
Finally, modern poets have their special attraction because they stand closest to us both in the language and images they use. Among them we find the American poet Robert Frost.
The introduction of English poetry to China came late. Towards the end of the nineteenth century Chinese writers started reading more foreign poetry. The great moment for European literature to come to China is between 1910 and the late 1930s when famous writers such as Lu Xun and Guo Moruo translated both poetry and novels into Chinese.
More and more people are interested to read modern poetry in English. Translations can be good, but being able to read in English gives you much more choice. Besides, no matter how well a poem is translated, something of the spirit of the original work is lost. Reading poetry in English also opens the door to finding new ways of expressing yourself in Chinese. Finally, poems and literature can be bridges between the East and the West. They can help us to understand each other better, or as Mu Dan wrote:
Quietly, we embrace
In a world lit up by words

Do you still remember your favorite poem from high school or some other important period in your life? Why is it that decades later it still stands out in your mind?Probably the main reason is that some aspect of that poem resonates(引起共鸣)with you.In the same way,you too as a school leader can touch the hearts of your staff and students.
Poetry allows us to experience strong spiritual connections to things around us and to the past. Thus,it can inspire whatever and whomever it touches. The power that poetry has displayed over time and across cultures actually satisfies this_common_need of the human heart and soul.
As one of the oldest art forms, poetry has successfully connected various strands of humanity(人性)from one generation to another.Referring to poetry,Hillyer makes a simple yet meaningful statement,“With this key mankind unlocked his heart.”
School leaders can find and make use of the value of poetry for themselves, their students and their staff members.Beyond the simple use of poetry, techniques of poetry such as metaphors, repetitions and imagery can be used to take advantage of the power of language to transform communication, create meaning and a culture of care and attention.
Since schools are mainly about people and relationships, school leaders, like poets, are required to inspire and encourage the human heart. The use of poetry-or even of some techniques of poetry-in school leadership not only helps to improve communication, but also serves to meet the human need for inspiration.

Rae Armantrout, who has been a poetry professor at the University of California San Diego(UCSD) for two decades, has won the 2010 Pulitzer Prize in the poetry category for her most recent book,“Versed”.
“I'm delighted and amazed at how much media recognition that the Pulitzer brings, as compared to even the National Book Critics Award, which I was also surprised and delighted to win,” said Armantrout.
“For a long time, my writing has been just below the media radar, and to have this kind of attention, suddenly, with my 10th book, is really surprising.”
Armantrout, a native Californian, received her bachelor's degree at UC Berkeley, where she studied with noted poet Denise Levertov, and her master's in creative writing from San Francisco State University. She is a founding member of Language Poets, a group in American poetry that analyzes the way language is used and raises questions to make the reader think.
In March, she won the National Book Critics Circle Award for“Versed.”
“This book has gotten more attention,”Armantrout said,“but I don't feel as if it's better.”The first half of “Versed” focuses on the dark forces taking hold of the United States as it fought the war against Iraq. The second half looks at the dark forces casting a shadow over her own life after Armantrout was diagnosed with cancer in 2006.
Armantrout was shocked to learn she had won the Pulitzer but many of her colleagues were not. “Rae Armantrout is a unique voice in American poetry,” said Seth Lerer, head of Arts and Humanities at UCSD.
“Versed”, published by the Wesleyan University Press, did appear in a larger printing than her earlier works, which is about 2,700 copies. The new edition is scheduled to appear in May.

On May 12,2008, a severe earthquake destroyed almost everything in the school, leaving badly-damaged buildings. It is now, however, taking on a new look. Tall buildings have been put up,including classrooms and laboratory buildings, and a library. There is also a newly-built standard playground. In the new environment, teachers and students are living happily and working hard. It is really amazing that the once-ruined place has now been turned into a beautiful school, full of life.
Obviously, without the help of the whole society, there would be no new school today. It is love and concern that have brought about the great changes. Many hands make light work. We can work wonders if we unite as a family, caring for each other and helping those in need. Union is strength.

第一节 (共15小题;每小题2分,满分30分)
阅读下列短文,从每题所给的四个选项(A、B、C和D)中,选出最佳选项。
A
A Southampton University team found that people who were vegetarian by 30 had recorded five IQ points more on average at the age of 10. Researchers said it could explain why people with a higher IQ were healthier as a vegetarian diet was linked to lower heart disease and obesity(肥胖) rates. The study of 8,179 was reported in the British Medical Journal.
Twenty years after the IQ tests were carried out in 1970, 366 of the participants said they were vegetarian-although more than 100 reported eating either fish or chicken.
Men who were vegetarian had an IQ score of 106, compared with 101 for non-vegetarians; while female vegetarians averaged 104, compared with 99 for non-vegetarians. There was no difference in the IQ score between strict vegetarians and those who said they were vegetarian but reported eating fish or chicken.
Researchers said the findings were partly related to better education and higher class, but it remained statistically(统计地)significant after adjusting for these factors.
Vegetarians were more likely to be female, to be of higher social class and to have higher academic or professional qualifications than non-vegetarians. However, these differences were not reflected in their annual income, which was similar to that of non-vegetarians.
Lead researcher Catharine Gale said,“The findings that children with greater intelligence are more likely to report being vegetarians than adults, together with the evidence on the potential benefits of a vegetarian diet on heart health, may help to explain why a higher IQ in childhood or adolescence is linked with a reduced risk of coronary heart disease (冠心病) in adult life.”
But Dr Frankie Phillips, of the British Dietetic Association, said:“It_is_like_the_chicken_and_the_egg. Do people become vegetarian because they have a very high IQ or is it just that they are clever enough to be more aware of health issues?”

About 84% of people have mental health problems and a third of the UK general public feels isolated, according to a new report.
The charity Mind says young people are most likely to feel disconnected from society, whether they have mental health problems or not.
It blames lack of relationships, absence of support and discrimination for feelings of social exclusion.
The charity is calling for government action on the problem.
Surveys of 532 Mind members and 964 members of the general public showed people living in rural communities and from black and ethnic communities were also more susceptible to isolation.Feelings of social exclusion was most common among people with mental health problems and often contributed to their illness.
Of the Mind members surveyed, 80% said isolation made it harder for them to recover or cope with their mental health problems.
Many blamed relationship problems or lack of close relationships stemming from their mental health problems as a top cause of isolation.
Unemployment, lack of money and lack of support services also featured highly.
Ready use of a telephone was mentioned most often as the support used to help overcome isolation.
Mind said many people with mental health problems were condemned to a life of social segregation because of avicious cycle of isolation, worsened by stigma and prejudice.
Chief executive Richard Brook said:“Most people already know that it's good to talk, but when you're in mental distress it isn't always that simple. If the crucial links are missing, things can go downhill rapidly.”
He urged the government to take the lead in providing better social support for those at risk.

Cities and states with more sidewalks and bike paths tend to have slimmer residents than locations where people must rely on vehicle transportation, according to a new study published on August 20.
The study, published in the American Journal of Public Health, adds to the mounting evidence showing active travel has significant health benefits, said Bassett, one of the researchers.“People who live in areas that are more conducive to walking and cycling are more likely to engage in these forms of active transport.”
Bassett and his colleagues analyzed data from all 50 US states and 47 largest US cities, along with international data from 14 countries. While the international data included the percentage of all trips taken by walking and cycling, they also looked at overall physical activity, obesity(肥胖) and diabetes(糖尿病).
Results showed that walking and cycling rates could explain more than half of the differences in obesity rates among countries, and about 30 percent of the difference in obesity rates among cities and states.
The US doesn't measure up well in the study, coming in at No. 12 out of 14 on percentage of trips adults take by bike or on foot. Australia came in last, though that data looked at percentage of work trips that were active, not total trips.
“European countries with high rates of walking and cycling have less obesity than do Australia and countries in North America that are highly car-dependent,”said the researchers.
The researchers suggest that in addition to infrastructure(基础设施) improvements, cities and states should limit car use.

Why do some people flush when they drink alcohol(酒)?This effect is a common reaction to alcohol among East Asians. It affects about 36 percent of Japanese,Chinese and Koreans.
For many, even a small amount of alcohol can cause unpleasant effects. Most commonly, their face, neck and sometimes their whole body turn red.People might also feel uncomfortable and sick to their stomach. They might experience a burning sensation, increased heart rate, shortness of breath and headaches.
The cause is a genetic difference that they are born with called an ALDH2 deficiency(缺乏).It prevents their bodies from treating alcohol the way other people do.But the effects might be more serious than just a red face.Researchers warn of a link between this condition and an increased risk of cancer of the esophagus(食道) from drinking alcohol.
The more alcohol people with this deficiency drink, the greater their risk is.In Japan and South Korea, for example, many people have the deficiency but still drink heavily.Researchers found that these drinkers develop a form of esophageal cancer six to ten times more often than those without the deficiency.
Esophageal cancer is one of the deadliest cancers. It can be treated when found early, but once it grows the chances of survival drop sharply. The researchers estimate that at least five hundred forty million people have the deficiency, about eight percent of the world's population.
Philip Brooks is a researcher at the National Institute in the United States. He says it is important to educate people about the link between the alcohol flushing effect and esophageal cancer. He says doctors should ask East Asian patients about their experiences with facial flushing after drinking alcohol. Those with a history of it should be advised to limit their alcohol use. They should also be warned that cigarette smoking works with the alcohol in a way that further increases the risk of esophageal cancer.

Dear Jimmy,
I'm delighted to learn that you have moved to a new city. But recently I heard that you used all the rest time to surf the internet after class.
Since you are in a new place, all the things are strange to you. It doesn't mean that you can close the door to live by yourself. Indeed you'd better go out to make more friends, and in this way,you can know the place better. Besides, in the morning you can get up earlier to do morning exercises, breathe the fresh morning air. It is helpful to a day of study. On weekends, you can play basketball with your friends to relax mood. Mountain climbing is a good type of movement. There must be many interesting places worth traveling. Don't miss the good time to enjoy the good scenery and kind-hearted people.
Computer is a cold machine. Why not go for a picnic with your classmates to enjoy the warm sunshine?
Wish your life be more colourful and healthy.
Sincerely yours
Li Hua

Rising levels of carbon dioxide in the atmosphere are a major cause of climate change, and now a new study has confirmed that atmospheric CO2 is also affecting the ocean chemistry and potentially harming sea life.
Montana State University scientist Robert Dore has been researching the water in the Pacific Ocean for almost two decades.
“We've been going to the same spot in the Pacific Ocean, and we try and characterize long-term change in the open ocean environment. And one of the key things that we measure is CO2 levels. And we've been able to record this increasing quantity of atmospheric CO2 into the ocean.”
Scientists expected that as atmospheric CO2 increased, more and more of the carbon dioxide would be absorbed into the ocean, affecting the chemical balance of the sea water, with a potentially harmful impact on shellfish and coral in particular.
“As carbon dioxide dissolves(溶解) in the water, or seawater in this case, it forms a weak acid, carbonic acid,”Dore explains. “And therefore, as the concentration of CO2 in the atmosphere goes up and that exchanges with the surface seawater, it drives the PH down, and makes it more acidic.”
The seawater Dore and his colleagues have analyzed confirms what the theory predicts.
The effect was particularly striking at about 250 meters down, and again at 500 meters. Dore and his colleagues came up with two possible explanations. It could be that surface water picked up CO2 and then moved to those depths. Or there could be a biological explanation.
“It's important to realize that the oceans are really becoming acidic. And it can have negative impacts on a whole variety of sea life from fish to coral. It's potentially catastrophic.”

The Japanese government has launched a campaign encouraging people to go to bed and get up extra early in order to reduce household carbon dioxide emissions(排放).
The Morning Challenge campaign, unveiled by the Environment Ministry, is based on the premise that swapping late night electricity for an extra hour of morning sunlight could significantly cut the nation's carbon_footprint.
A typical family can reduce its carbon dioxide footprint by 85kg a year if everyone goes to bed and gets up one hour earlier, according to the campaign.
The amount of carbon dioxide emissions potentially saved from going to bed an hour early was the equivalent of 20% of annual emissions from household lights,“Many Japanese people waste electric power at night time, for example by watching TV until very late,”a ministry spokesperson told The Daily Telegraph.
“But going to bed early and getting up early can avoid wasting electrical power which causes carbon dioxide emissions. If people change their lifestyle, we can save energy and reduce emissions.”The campaign also proposes that people take advantage of an extra hour of morning sunlight by improving their lifestyles in general by running, doing yoga and eating a nutritious breakfast.
It is the latest initiative(倡议) fighting climate change by the Japanese environment ministry, which is faced with the challenge of reducing carbon dioxide emissions by 25% from 1990 levels within the next decade.

Prince Charles yesterday pledged to reduce the royal impact on the environment through sweeping changes to his personal lifestyle and official schedule. The prince will replace carbon-heavy private jets and helicopters with scheduled flights and train services.
The move came as Prince Charles urged business leaders to publish the environmental pact of their activities. He said,“Few accountants and business decision-makers ask,”How much of our critical natural resource is left? How many miles of polar ice cap has our business helped melt this year? By how many inches have we raised sea levels? How many species have we put at risk? How many homes will be flooded, how many people will die of thirst or starvation because of our activities? “These are not comfortable questions, but, by God, they need to be asked.”
He added,“At the moment these costs do not appear in anyone's books...Yet they are real, they are incurred now and in a relatively short time, the damage being caused may be beyond remedy.”He said the world was“running up the_biggest_global_credit_card_debt in history, but with little or no thought for how the bill will ever be paid”.
Flanked by the prime minister and business and community leaders at St James' Palace, the prince said his new“accounting for sustainability” project would give consumers the power to choose products that caused less damage to the planet.
Duchy Originals, the prince's food company, is taking steps to work out how much carbon dioxide and other green-house gas are emitted in growing, processing and distributing its products. The changes to the prince's travel arrangements announced yesterday are part of a wider review of the carbon footprint associated with activities at all three of his residences. Clarence House in London, Highgrove and Birkhall on the Balmorals estate, as well as the activities of his 21 personal and 105 full-time staff. Measures include a review of electricity use, commuter and other staff travel and are intended to identify further reductions in carbon dioxide emissions. The review will report in June , when Clarence House will announce annual targets to reduce carbon emission.

Huar is not the only boy band in China, but it may be the only one that values fun more than anything else.Their album Dynasty of Your Life has been a hit since it was released on July 28th,2000.Fans stormed the FAB music store in Wangfujing,a Beijing shopping street. They waited for hours just to get the band members' autographs.
Started in February,1998,Huar was said to be the “first adolescent band”in China:Da Zhangwei, the soul of the band, was only 15;drummer Wang Wenbo 16;and the oldest one, bass player Guo Yang was 20.
Their first two albums On the Other Side of Happiness and The Strawberry Statement were mainly punk rock. Thanks to them, punk music became more widely known in China.Teenagers around the country love Huar because they feel their songs reflect their life experiences.

Britain's seed bank, the only one in the world aiming to collect all of the planet's wild plant species, has reached its goal of banking 10 percent by 2010.
The Millennium Seed Bank Project, run by Kew Gardens-one of the oldest botanical gardens-will officially deposit the 24,200th species on Thursday,a pink, wild banana from China.More than 50 countries are now on board with Kew's giant task but vast places of the globe, including India and Brazil, still need to join in and donate seeds, director Paul Smith said.
The seed bank is one of the largest and most diverse in the world with more than 1.5 billion seeds. Its goal is to help protect the planet's biodiversity during a time of climate change.
The wild banana seed is under threat of extinction(灭绝)in Southwest China from agricultural development. It is a vital food source for Asian elephants and important for growing bananas for human consumption.
Stored at minus 20 degrees centigrade, the seeds can last for thousands of years and await the day that scientists hope never comes when the species no longer exist in the wild.
“It is a race against time”,Smith said,“because in the last decade alone,20 plants held in the bank have already been wiped out in the wild”.He estimates that between a third and a quarter will become extinct this century.
“It is urgent and it is happening now.An area, the size of England,is cleared of primary vegetation(植被)every year,”Smith said.
Because most of the world's food and medicines come from nature, protecting wild plant species is quite important, scientists say. There are already many other seed banks safeguarding food crops, which only account for 0.6 percent of plant diversity.
For Kew's next goal-to collect a quarter of wild varieties by 2020-the botanists need 10 million pounds a year,or a further 100 million pounds on top of the 40 million they have already been granted.

Wind, water, fire and ice——these powerful natural forces shaped the land of America in the past. They are still changing it today. The Colorado River slowly cut down through stone to make the Grand Canyon(大峡谷).
Wind and rain storms hit the land from time to time.Fires sometimes burn down forests and destroy the homes of wild animals. This happened in Yellowstone Park in 1988.
Dead volcanic(火山) mountains such as Haleakaia on Maui and Crater Lake in Oregon are beautiful to look at.But there are several active volcanoes in the US,especially along the Pacific Coast. There are also many earthquakes in this area.Scientists can do nothing to control earthquakes or volcanoes. This was shown clearly on May 10,1980.At 8:32 that morning,Mount St.Helens in Washington state erupted. The top of the mountain was blown off.
Over 60 people-campers,scientists,journalists,and forest workers were killed.Hundreds of square miles of forests were knocked down.In towns over 100 miles away, day suddenly became night. An ash cloud hid the sun for many hours.Towns and fields in Washington,Oregon, and Idaho were covered with dirty gray ash.
Scientists knew that Mount St.Helens might erupt soon. But no one could say when. Scientists had asked people to move away because the volcano was becoming dangerous. But Harry Truman would not leave his home. Now it is covered with many feet of dirty ash.
But slowly, life is returning to the dead area around the mountain.Grass and small plants are becoming to grow again.Deer and birds have been seen. The land will never be the same as it once was. Perhaps Mount St.Helens will erupt again. But this is all part of nature's pattern of change, and man has little power to control it.

The ground we walk on seems firm, but deep under the earth and under the sea the rocks change and move. In some parts of the world there are“fire mountains”, which we call volcanoes. From time to time they burst open and throw out fire and burning ash. These volcanoes are very dangerous.
Hong Kong does not have any volcanoes but there are many in Indonesia and Philippines. There is also a famous mountain near Tokyo, Japan, which is a volcano too. Its name is Mount Fuji. For much of the year, it is covered with snow.
One of the most famous volcanoes which erupted(喷发)in recent times was Krakatoa, on an island in Indonesia. The first explosions(爆发)took place on 20th May, 1883, but the big eruption did not come until the 26th and 27th August of that year. The people on the island were used to the explosions by that time, and so they were completely unprepared for this terrible happening. Almost all the people on the island died and the explosion also made huge waves in the sea, which drowned(淹死)many people on the other island nearby. After the eruption was over, people saw that the whole northern part of the island had completely disappeared. Scientists say that 15 cubic(立方)kilometers of rocks and ash were thrown up in the explosion. The noise of the explosion was heard nearly 5,000 kilometers away in the middle of the Indian Ocean, and the city of Jakarta was completely dark for about two and a half hours.

As they migrate(迁移),butterflies and moths choose the winds they want to fly with, and they change their body positions if they start floating in the wrong direction. This new finding suggests that insects may employ some of the same methods that birds use for traveling long distances.Scientists have long thought that insects were simply at the mercy of the wind.
Fascinating as their skills of flight are, migrating behavior has been difficult to study in insects because many long distant trips happen thousands of feet above ground. Only recently have scientists developed technologies that can detect such little creatures at such great heights.
To their surprise, though, the insects weren't passive travelers on the winds. In autumn, for example, most light winds blew from the east, but the insects somehow sought out ones that carried them south and they positioned themselves to navigate directly to their winter homes.Even in the spring, when most winds flowed northward, the insects didn't always go with the flow.If breezes weren't blowing in the exact direction they wanted to go,the insects changed their body positions to compensate. Many migrating birds do the same thing.
The study also found, butterflies and moths actively flew within the air streams that pushed them along.By adding flight speeds to wind speeds, the scientists calculated that butterflies and moths can travel as fast as 100 kilometers an hour. The findings may have real-world applications.
With climate warming, migrating insects are growing in number.Knowing how and when these pests move could help when farmers decide when to spray their crops.

Hello_everyone,
My_name_is_Li_Hua.My_topic_today_is_how_to_survive_an_earthquake.
As we all know, a terrible earthquake happened in Japan on March 11, 2011 Beijing time, in which tens of thousands of people were injured or killed.
If we know some common knowledge of surviving an earthquake, we can save our lives. The following are the tips for you when you come across an earthquake.
If you are outdoors, just lie on the ground and be sure to keep away from buildings. Don't have to run around or it can throw yourself down. The earthquake may put any buildings to the ground and something falling down will injure you.
If you are indoors, try to go outside. But if you don't have enough time, staying inside is possibly safer. Hide yourself under the table or other firm furniture, which not only provides the protection to you, but also a big breath space.
That's all. Thanks for your listening.
