Brazil has become one of the most successful developing countries in reducing population growth, but more by accident than by design. While countries such as India have made great efforts to reduce birth rates, Brazil has had better results without really trying, saying George Martine at Harvard.
Brazil’s population growth rate has dropped from 2.99% a year between 1951 and 1960 to 1.93% a year between 1981 and 1990, and Brazilian women now have only 2.7 children on average. Martine says this figure may have fallen still further since 1990, an achievement that makes it the envy of many other Third World countries.
Martine puts it down to, among other things, soap operas and family plans introduced in the 1970s. Both played an important, although indirect, role in lowering the birth rate. Brazil is one of the world’s biggest producers of soap operas. Globo, Brazil’s most popular television network, shows three hours of soaps six nights a week, while three others show at least one hour a night. Most soaps are based on wealthy characters living the high life in big cities.
“ Although they have never really tried to work in a message towards the problems of reproduction, they describe the values of middle and upper class-not many children, different attitudes towards sex, women working,” says Martine, “ They sent this image to all parts of Brazil and made people conscious of other patterns of behavior and other values, which were put into a very attractive package.”
Meanwhile, the family plans tried to encourage the poor to become consumers. “ This led to a great change in consumption patterns and consumption,” says Martine.
How has Brazil reduced population growth?
A. By introducing the high life in big cities. B. By learning from others.
C. By developing TV programs. D. By chance.
When did the soap operas and family plans probably begin in Brazil?
A. Probably in 1951. B. Probably in 1961.
C. Probably in 1971. D. Probably in 1981.
According to the passage, which of the following is TRUE?
Many Third World countries tried to learn from Brazil.
The increase in the birth rate in Brazil is the smallest in the world.
The desire for consumption helps reduce the birth rate.
Soap operas played a less useful role than the family plans in birth control.
What led to great changes in Brazilian consumption patterns and consumption?
A. The soap operas. B. The family plans.
C. The life of upper class. D. The attitude towards life.
C
See how people from other countries relieve their stress. Learn from them, develop some good habits, and find out some good ways to enjoy your life.
Sweden
In Sweden, people usually enjoy a coffee break with friends in the afternoon, which has been a part of their culture since the 1700s. During the break time, they talk with their friends freely and relax.
What you can do: Program a break reminder into your cell phone. When the cell phone rings, you can go to have a break and have some coffee together with your friends in the break room. Don’t feel guilty for slacking off. A study shows that people who relax properly during the workday will be more productive than those who don’t.
Ireland
In Ireland, parents often take their kids to do exercises and play outdoors in the cold-weather months. People there also like to take winter walks, which helps them to breathe fresh air and have a clear head.
What you can do: Head outside for a walk and take some exercises. Exercises can help you not only keep fit but also reduce your stress. During the colder months, with less natural light around, it’s especially helpful to go outside.
Russia
In Russia, people like to enjoy a hot sauna after work. They think sitting in the extreme heat to sweat is a wonderful way to get relaxed and relieve stress.
What you can do: Take a warm shower and your stress can be washed away quickly. Research from Yale University indicates that the warmth you get from a hot shower can trigger (引发) your brain and body responses, which can help reduce your stress and improve your mood.
What does the “study” in Paragraph 3 show?
People who relax properly can achieve the same results as those who don’t.
People who don’t relax can achieve better results than those who relax.
People who relax properly can achieve better results than those who don’t.
People who don’t relax want to achieve better results than those who relax properly.
Why did people in Russia like to enjoy a hot sauna after work?
Because they want to keep fit.
Because they want to lose weight.
Because they want to get warmth.
Because they want to relieve their stress.
Why do people in Ireland go outside during the colder months?
Because there is less natural light around.
Because they want to do some exercises.
Because they like to set good a example for their children.
Because they are afraid of catching cold.
What does the underlined phrase “slacking off” in Paragraph 3 mean?
Working hard. B. Slowing down. C. Making progress. D. Picking up.
D
Unhappiness with one’s appearance is common, but for Koreans perhaps more than any other countries.
Remarkably, one in five South Korean women has had some form of cosmetic(美容的)surgery, compared to around one in 20 in the U.S., according to the International Society of Aesthetic Plastic Surgeons.
A powerful Korean pop culture over the past two or three decades has made Korean women equate (等同)beauty with professional and economic success.
Due to the rise of Korean pop culture, many Korean women, especially teens, are attracted by some famous singers’ small faces, large eyes and tiny noses. They welcome the idea of an operation to look like their favorite idols. Thus, cosmetic surgery has become a nationwide obsession (迷恋) in South Korea.
At the same time, Korean women suffer a strong beauty pressure. In South Korea, women need to meet the cultural expectations of being beautiful and attractive.
There are strict rules about women’s appearance in the workplace. Job applicants, for example, are commonly required to submit a headshot (证件照)with their resume.
Beauty is prized almost everywhere in the world, but in South Korea its value is very important. South Korean employers examine the looks of the applicants-in search for physical attractiveness-in addition to their professional qualifications.
For a woman to be capable in South Korea, it’s not enough just to have a certain skill set. You have to be beautiful as well. After the Korean economic crisis in 1997, competition for jobs led to the surgery boom; people try to get a leg up in the job market any way they can.
Companies actually don’t like to hire people who have had eye and nose surgery, but they still only hire pretty people. Because of this, parents let children have surgery even younger so it looks more natural as they mature.
What has made Korean women equate beauty with professional and economic success?
A. The marriage. B. The Korean pop culture.
C. The competition for jobs. D. The custom.
What are the cultural expectations for women in South Korea?
A. Women should be beautiful and attractive.
B. Women should be professional.
C. Women should be as skillful as men.
D. Women should earn the same money as men.
34. What has the competition for jobs after the 1997 Korean economic crisis resulted in?
The training center of work. B. The boom in the foreign language.
C. The boom in make-up lessons. D. The boom in cosmetic surgery.
What’s the best title of the text?
A. South Korean pop culture. B. How to apply for jobs.
C. Korea’s crazy plastic surgery obsession. D. Competition for jobs in Korea.

Text 10
Good morning and welcome to the BBC news special.
Have you ever heard of a four-year-old college student? But this is true of NIcholas Macmabon, who is now studying at college because he is too clever for school.
Nicholas spoke well before he was one. At eighteen months he took telephone messages for his parents. At two he began to learn French. The strange thing about Nicholas is that he taught himself to read before he could speak.
His parents knew immediately that he could read. When he could speak, he corrected his spelling. He tried two different schools, but he was bored and unhappy and his parents did not have enough time to prepare special lessons for Nicholas. The MacMahons had no idea what to do with him. Then the West London Institute offered to help. Nicholas spends some of his time there, and also studies at home. He reads newspaper every day, and he can play the violin well. He doesn’t have any social life in the school. Nicholas is a clever child and the teachers want to help him in every way.
