阅读下列短文, 从每题所给的A、B、C、D四个选项中, 选出最佳选项。
A
Maybe you only think about bread in terms of what holds your sandwich together. But bread has played such an important role in our lives for thousands of years that words and phrases relating to it have crept into our everyday vocabularies.
Breadwinner
Have you ever heard your mom or dad referred to as the breadwinner of the household No, they aren't running a race to win a loaf of bread for dinner or entering some weird lottery at the bakery. Since "bread" is a term for the basic food and drink that everyone needs, "breadwinner" refers to the person who is the main provider for a family, the one who earns the money to bring home the "bread" that their family needs. Today, usually both mom and dad are breadwinners.
Breadbasket
It may sound like something they bring the breadsticks in at a restaurant, but a breadbasket actually has other meanings besides bread holder. A region of a country that grows a lot of grain, like the Midwest region of the United States, is often called that country's breadbasket, since it provides the raw materials for much of its bread. Oddly enough, breadbasket is also a slang term for a person's stomach—where they "keep" their bread after eating it!
Best thing since sliced bread
This probably sounds weird, since most of us buy our bread at the grocery store, perfectly pre-sliced. But once people could only buy unsliced bread, they had to carefully cut each piece with a knife. In 1928, Otto Rohwedder invented a bread-slicing machine. Today the term is usually used in referring to a brilliant idea or the perfect device like those mysterious kitchen wares.
Bread and Butter
When the man at the auto repair shop says that flat tires are his "bread and butter", he's not on some strange new diet. This phrase refers to a task or job that's a basic means of making a living—in this case, fixing flat tires—which provides the most money for the essentials of everyday life.
21. Which of the following expressions can be used to refer to an organ
A. Breadwinner. B. Breadbasket.
C. Best thing since sliced bread. D. Bread and butter.
22. In which situation will people say "It is the best thing since sliced bread"
A. A man puts forward a wonderful proposal.
B. A college graduate found a high paid job.
C. A wife praises herself for raising her family.
D. A boy wins a competition for loafs of bread.
23. In which section of a magazine may this text appear
A. Travel. B. Cuisine. C. Education. D. Culture.

Life has been hard for Chinese villager Zu Wenbao, who is in his early 20s. But thanks to Beijing-based Chen's Studio, music has become his saving grace. Zu has autism(自闭症), which has meant Zu was unable to fit in at school or among other young people. All that changed when he started learning music at Chen's Studio.
Zu, joined the five-studio school in 2020. He has since learned to play the keyboard, and sings along with the other members of the "Star Kids" band that their teacher, Chen Shensi, set up in 2021 for people with autism. "Without music and band, he wouldn't have any peers to socialise with," said Zu's mother, who travels with her son every Sunday for two hours on three different buses from their current home in the suburb of Beijing so that he can attend classes. "Even though some kids taking music classes are younger than him and half his size, they all take care of him like he's their brother."
Eager to help more people with autism, Chen started free-of-charge lessons. "Life for them has been hard, and I wanted to do as much as I could to give them joy through music," he said. Chen admits he was very frustrated at first with his students because he had to repeat himself many times. Disciplining the class was also tough, but eventually, the students started communicating better with him and each other.
People with autism tend to find it difficult to get jobs, but Chen hopes he can change that by giving his students a way to earn a living: the "Star Kids" band has already performed in several concerts at events held at campsites on the suburbs of Beijing. "It's just difficult for them to communicate normally with other people, let alone work in a typical job, but they might be able to make a living as artists. To some degree, I think music might be their language," Chen said.
24. What might be the main reason for Zu attending Chen's studio
A. Chen found Zu's talent for keyboard. B. Chen's studio was the best in Beijing.
C. Zu was born enthusiastic about music. D. Zu couldn't integrate into a normal school.
25. What did Zu gain from Chen's studio
A. Attention from society. B. Extraordinary musical skills.
C. Admiration of other students. D. Chances to communicate with peers.
26. Which of the following words can best describe Chen
A. Creative and generous. B. Devoted and intelligent.
C. Responsible and caring. D. Considerate and cooperative.
27. What is the intention of Chen setting up the studio
A. To instruct his students to get a degree in music and language.
B. To help his students master a way to earn a living through music.
C. To teach some communication skills to his students with autism.
D. To make money through performing concerts at the edge of Beijing.

Baidu has unveiled plans for an electric self-driving car with a removable steering wheel, marking another step forward in the fast-moving robotaxi race in China. The Chinese tech giant revealed the Apollo RT6, its sixth-generation autonomous vehicle, at Baidu World 2022, the company's annual flagship conference.
Baidu's ride-hailing(叫车)service, Apollo Go, now running on a trial basis in 10 cities in China, including Shenzhen, Shanghai and Beijing, has provided more than one million rides since 2020. The new vehicle is to be rolled out through that program sometime next year. At that time, it will be avaible to the public.
According to Baidu, this new model has the road skills of a driver with 20 years' experience. And the vehicle is packed with 38 sensors, including 8 light detection and ranging sensors, 6 millimeter-wave radars, 12 ultrasonic radars, and 12 cameras. One day, Baidu says, the RT6's removable steering wheel could be replaced by things like extra seats, vending machines(自动售货机), desktops, or even games consoles(游戏机).
The company also mentions each Apollo RT6 would cost 250,000 yuan, significantly less than previous models. Those cost savings will be passed on to passengers as the company prepares to introduce the RT6 to its existing fleet of robotaxis around the country in the second half of 2023, according to Robin Li, cofounder and CEO of Baidu. "This massive cost reduction will enable us to deploy(部署)tens of thousands of autonomous vehicles across China. We are moving toward a future where taking a robotaxi will be half the cost of taking a taxi today," Li said in a statement.
Baidu made its name as a massive search engine provider, but it has also long invested in self-driving technology in the world's largest car market. In April, the company announced that it would start letting people in certain areas book taxi rides without anyone behind the wheel. The creation of Apollo RT6 marks another milestone for Baidu's goal of providing safer, greener and more efficient mobility solutions.
28. What does the underlined phrase "rolled out" in Paragraph 2 probably mean
A. Invented. B. Canceled. C. Launched. D. Produced.
29. What can we infer from Paragraph 4
A. The cost of taking a taxi will be less than that of today.
B. More autonomous vehicles might be available across China.
C. Baidu will set up a new fleet of RT6 in the second half of 2023.
D. Apollo RT6 will take the place of traditional taxies completely.
30. What's the author's attitude to the creation of Apollo RT6
A. Skeptical. B. Intolerant. C. Indifferent. D. Optimistic.
31. What's the main idea of the passage
A. Baidu put forward a new generation robotaxi plan.
B. Baidu has found a good solution to green mobility.
C. Baidu succeeded in cutting down the cost of robotaxi.

People tend to pay less attention to tasks when working alongside a robot, according to research that found evidence of "social loafing", where team members work less hard if they think others will cover for them.
Researchers at the Technical University of Berlin said people come to see robots as part of their team. Where they think a colleague or the technology performs particularly well, or where they think their own contribution would not be appreciated, people tend to take a more laid-back approach.
"Teamwork is a mixed blessing," said Dietlind Helene Cymek(DHC), the first author of the study. "Working together can motivate people to perform well but it can also lead to a loss of motivation because the individual contribution is not as visible. We were interested in whether we could also find such motivational effects when the team partner is a robot."
The team tested their hypothesis by asking a group of workers to check the quality of a series of tasks. The workers were all asked to carry out checks for errors on circuit boards(电路板). Half of them were told the tasks were also performed by a robot. While they did not work directly with the robot, named Panda, those people had seen it and were able to hear it operating.
Their activity was monitored by the researchers, who blurred out the images of the boards the workers received, only showing them an image they could check once they actively opened it.
Initially, they said they found no statistical difference in the time the two groups—those who were told they were working with a robot and those who were not—spent inspecting the circuit boards, or in the area they searched for errors.
However, when the researchers investigated the participants' error rates, they found those knowing Panda's presence were catching fewer defects after they had seen the robot had successfully flagged many errors. They said this could reflect a "looking but not seeing" effect, where people engage less once they feel a colleague or resource is reliable.
While participants who were asked to rate their own performance thought they were paying an equivalent amount of attention, the researchers felt that subconsciously they had begun to assume Panda had picked up defects well.
32. Why do people pay less attention to tasks when working with a robot
A. They see the robot as their colleague.
B. They think the robot can cover all tasks.
C. They believe their performance will be appreciated.
D. They feel unvalued about their personal contribution.
33. What does DHC mean by saying "Teamwork is a mixed blessing"
A. Teamwork is of great help for workers.
B. Teamwork can improve work efficiency.
C. Teamwork involves different kinds of weaknesses.
D. Teamwork has both advantages and disadvantages.
34. What did the workers need to do during the researchers' test
A. They need to blur out the images of the circuit boards.
B. They need to check errors on circuit boards with robots.
C. They need to see and hear how the robots were operating.
D. They need to monitor the robots to check the quality of circuit boards.
35. Which of the following can best describe the procedure of the study
A. Group→Instruct→Monitor→Rate
B. Question→Detect→Demonstrate→Collect
C. Monitor→Group→Investigate→Rate
D. Monitor→Investigate→Reflect→Instruct

Many of us are now finding ourselves exhausted, burned out, struggling to build balance back into our lives. We need to recharge. Water can help. 36
Remember that all water counts.
You may have some nearby water, even if it is just a creek alongside the road. Start there. Then branch out to water you can visit on the weekend or a vacation. 37 . So does domestic water—in pools, bathtubs, even sprinklers. If you can't get to actual water, then paintings, photographs, videos and movies can produce some of the same benefits. Even virtual reality helps.
Go often.
38 .A 2019 study found that it takes at least two hours a week in nature to improve our well-being, although that time can be broken into smaller stretches. A more recent, yet-to-be-published study found that spending a similar amount of time near water has the same benefits, says Mathew White who studies the health benefits of water environments.

And get good at it. This will help you experience a flow state where time and your worries fall away as you become fully engaged in the sport you are doing. When you become skilled at an activity, your brain changes: It forms new neural pathways, which become faster and stronger. This makes it even easier in the future to enter a state of flow while doing this same activity.

My father's gift
I still remembered the day when my father showed me a case as if it were a treasure chest. "Here is a gift for you." he said excitedly. "Once you learn to play the accordion(手风琴), it'll stay with you for life." I forced a smile. Accordions were never on my list of favorite instruments.
Then Dad announced that I would start lessons the following week. In disbelief I shot my eyes toward Mom for support. No luck. Shortly after, my lessons began.
I was ordered to practice half an hour every day, and every day I tried to get out of it. My future shouldn't be in the house mastering songs I would soon forget. But my father was completely against it. Nevertheless, I had to keep going.
Gradually, to my surprise, I began to notice improvement. I was able to play simple songs. Often, after supper, my father would request a tune or two. "Very nice, better than last week," he'd say in his easy chair, sometimes drifting off to sleep, newspapers folded on his lap. I took it as a praise that he could relax under the spell of my playing.
One July evening I was giving an almost perfect performance of "Come Back to Sorrento", and my parents called me to an open window. An elderly neighbor, rarely seen outside her house, was leaning against our car humming(哼唱)dreamily to the tune. When I finished, she smiled broadly and called out, "I remember that song as a child in Italy. Beautiful, just beautiful."
For the next months, I dutifully followed my father's instructions, practicing hour after hour, day after day. My fingers were often sore and my arms ached, but I never quit it.
One day on our way back home, I was told to prepare for a solo on a local theater's stage. I wanted to skip the whole thing. Emotions boiled over in the car.
"I don't want to play a solo,” I said.
"You have to," replied my father.
"Why ” I shouted, "Why should I have to play this stupid instrument ”

应用文参考范文:
Dear Tom,
I’m Li Hua, your student. I’m writing to express my opinions about the teaching of “Reading for Writing”.
I fully understand that you desire to improve our writing in a short time. However, many of us find English writing a bit difficult. We are required to write an article directly, which can result in stress or a lack of progress. Therefore, I suppose maybe it’s better to teach us the related reading materials first and help us accumulate some words and expressions. Only in this way can we know better how to write.
Finally, I hope that you will consider my suggestions. Thank you for your time.
Yours sincerely,
Li Hua
读后续写参考范文:
Paragraph 1:
Taking a deep breath, my father turned around. With a serious expression, he said, "You will come to realize the significance of playing it in your life. Your self-discipline and perseverance will make you a better man. And your music will bring others joy." I sat there, silently reflecting on my father's words. Maybe he was right. In spite of the fact that I couldn’t fully understand what my father had said, his seriousness had forced me to continue practicing and preparing for my solo performance in the following days.
Paragraph 2:
Then came the big day for the performance. At the theater, nervousness overtook me as I realized how much I wanted to make my parents proud. Finally when I gathered all my courage to play on the stage, the audience was silent. And when I finished, they erupted into applause. I saw my father seated there, beaming with pride. That day, I realized that my father's gift wasn't just an accordion. It was the gift of discipline and perseverance, and the value of hard work. They will stay with me for life. And for that, I would always be grateful.
Taking a deep breath, my father turned around.
Then came the big day for the performance.

M: I would like to know something about beginner Spanish. I will take charge of our company’s sales in Spain next year, so I’d like to learn some native language so as to communicate with local customers.
W: Well, that’s an introductory course, so the focus is on basic grammar and some simple phrases. That class isn’t full yet. You are so lucky and should sign up soon.
M: I’d do that now.
W: OK. Sir. Here is the timetable for our courses. You can take it home.

M: What a fantastic performance! Thank you for inviting me to the musical.
W: You are welcome. I’m happy you enjoyed the show. The performances of the dancers were incredible. It reminds me of when I used to dance.
M: I know! You were such a talented ballerina. Do you miss dancing
W: Oh, that’s very kind of you, Shannon. I do miss it sometimes. I felt wonderful when I was on the stage. But I will always be a fan of the arts. That’s why I love going to musicals because it’s the perfect combination of song, dance and theater.

W: Jay, how were your New Year celebrations
M: I celebrated with my host family since I didn’t go home. It’s a long way from here to Beijing.
W: Did you have a good time with your host family
M: Yeah, it was fun to share our stories. What did you do to celebrate New Year
W: Each family is different, I think. But one of my family traditions is the Rose Bowl and the Rose Parade.
M: Wait, what’s the Rose Bowl And what’s the Rose Parade
W: Well, the Rose Bowl is an annual American college football game, usually played on January 1st. The Rose Parade is held on the same day, unless New Year falls on a Sunday.
M: Then, anything fun
W: It includes flower-covered floats. There are also marching bands. It’s really cool!

M: Hello, Freya. Mountain biking is a popular sport among teenagers but there are fewer girls doing it. Am I right
W: Yes, although we`re growing in numbers. When I was 13, my dad bought my brother a mountain bike but I was given an ordinary one. I really wanted to join my brother, so in the end my uncle got one for me.
M: And now you`re a winner
W: Yes. I just won the Regional Championship. It was a difficult course with lots of rocks. At one point I thought I wasn’t going to win. I was ahead and then I had to slow down because a photographer jumped out from behind a tree.
M: What do you think is the most important before a race
W: Well, there`s much to do. Take plenty of exercise to keep fit. Check the route in advance. And the most important I think is that you must make sure everything’s working on the bike. If there’s anything wrong with the bike, I’ll be in trouble. And the clothes shouldn’t slow you down so they need to be tight. They might feel a bit uncomfortable when you first put them on, but you willsoon get used to it. I’m not bothered about not looking pretty—I just want to win.

W: Hey welcome to today’s talk! I’m Emma Davis, an AI enthusiast who’s been exploring this since finishing at MIT. I’m excited to share my passion for the incredible world of artificial intelligence, or AI.
I’ll kick things off with an awesome story from 2015, in Silicon Valley. Our project was called “Project Skylark” and with Dr. Jack Thompson, a Cornell University bird expert. We wanted to teach a machine to recognize different birds.
It was amazing. “Avis”, the AI system, learnt to improve its accuracy over time. In six months, it could identify bird species better than human experts! This showed the incredible potential of AI!
It’s come a long way since the 1950s with Alan Turing’s ideas. Modern systems can analyze data, spot patterns, and make decisions on their own. This power has opened up endless possibilities in areas like healthcare, finance, and transportation.
One inspiring example comes from Dr. Alice Chen, who in 2018 led a team at Stanford University to develop the computer program “MediScan” that analyzes images and detects early signs of diseases like cancer. MediScan’s accuracy and speed massively surpassed human capabilities, saving thousands of lives.
However, it has its challenges and risks. A 2020 report showed concern of AI taking jobs and affecting economy. I love AI but there’s tough conversations about balancing progress, job security, privacy and security as systems get better. Together, we can create a future where AI helps us achieve our wildest dreams.
