A precious family reunion
Our Chinese people attach great importance to family reunion on the Chinese New Year’s Eve. Before New Year’s eve, people will stick the Spring Festival couplets on the door and paper cuttings on the windows, which represent good fortune and happiness. On New Year’s eve, we gather around a round table, enjoying a big dinner. Despite the cold outside, the air inside is warm with merry laughter ringing throughout the house. As midnight approaches, we start to set off colorful fireworks in an open area, celebrating the family’s togetherness as well as the coming of new year.

Text 1
M: It’s already 8:30. Shall we go now Or we’ll be late.
W: Ok. I packed the bag about an hour ago. We can get to the airport within 2 hours.
Text 2
M: Can I watch TV for a while
W: I don’t think that’s possible. You have to finish your homework first. Now, be a good boy. Go upstairs and tidy your room first. Then finish your schoolwork.
Text 3
M: Do you have this in black
W: I’m sorry. But we have another shirt in black and orange. I think you’d look good in that. Would you like to try it on
M: Ok. Hm…I don’t think it will do. Orange makes me look old.
Text 4
M: What’s wrong, Helen
W: I forgot to bring my homework again. I’m afraid Mrs. Wilson will be mad with me.
M: Don’t worry. Just explain and apologize to her sincerely. She’s a nice person.
Text 5
M: Hey, Lisa. Can you do the report for me I have to pick up a friend of mine at the airport and show him around the city.
W: Sorry, Kevin. I’ve got my hands full now. You’d better ask somebody else.
M: But I’ve already asked everybody. They all got work to do.
W: Well, I guess you’ll have to do it yourself.
Text 6
W: Steve, are you ready for classes
M: Not really. There’s a big problem in my course schedule. I have to take History and Geography. The problem is that the two courses meet at the same time.
W: What are you gonna do
M: I talked to the professor, and he said I could do an independent study for history. I’d read the text and do the homework on my own, and meet him when I need to.
W: That sounds a good solution to the problem.
M: Yeah, it’s just that, working on my own like that, I’m concerned I won’t be able to make myself get the work done on time. It’s easy to put things off when it’s not an actual class.
W: Well, since you’ve got no other options, you’ll just have to push yourself.
Text 7
W: Hey, Bob, I’ve been meaning to ask how’s that film class going
M: Great! And guess what, there’s a special class meeting tomorrow night to view an Alfred Hitchcock film.
W: Hitchcock films are great. Will you be there
M: I don’t know. I’m supposed to have dinner at the dining hall with my cousin. He’s coming to spend the day on campus and check out the university.
W: Well, maybe I can help. If you want, he can have dinner with me and some friends of mine.
M: Well, the thing is: he’s shy and he might be uncomfortable with people he doesn’t know. And I do want him to enjoy himself here.
W: Do you have a better idea
M: Well, I can skip the film and have dinner with my cousin as planned. I’d rent the film and watch it later.
Text 8
M: Hi, come and take a seat.
W: Thank you.
M: My name’s Carl Rogers and I’m one of the doctors here at the Total Health Center. So, I understand this is your first visit to the center
W: Yes, it is.
M: So tell me a little about what brought you here today.
W: Well, I’ve been getting a pain in my knee, the left one. It’s gotten worse.
M: How long have you felt this pain Is it just a few days, or is it longer than that
W: Longer. It’s been worse for the last couple of days, but it’s three weeks since I first noticed it. It came on quite gradually though, so I kind of ignored it at first.
M: Have you taken any medicine yourself, or treated it in any way
W: Yeah, I’ve been taking medicine to deal with the pain, but it works only for a few hours.
M: Ok. Let me see what I can do.
Text 9
M: Hello. Do you mind if I ask you some questions about your journey today We’re doing a customer satisfaction survey.
W: Ok. I’ve got about ten minutes before my train home leaves. I’m on a day trip.

W: I’m a reporter.
M: Oh, really So was the reason for your visit here today work
W: Actually, it’s my day off. I came here to do some shopping.
M: Oh right.
W: But I do sometimes come here for work.
M: Ok. Next, can I ask what kind of ticket you bought I assume it wasn’t a season ticket, as you don’t travel every day.
W: That’s right. I just got a normal return ticket.
M: Do you usually buy your tickets at the station
W: Well, I do usually but the ticket office closes early and I hate using ticket machines. There’s always a queue for the machines and they’re often out of order.
M: Ok. Thank you. Maybe you can try the e-ticket online.
Text 10
Many diseases are caused by things out of our control. Yet there are things you can do to improve your health. An unhealthy lifestyle can put you at great risk of heart disease. Poor diet, having too much body fat and a lack of exercise can all increase your risk of heart disease—so can smoking and drinking too much. So doctors advise us to eat healthy foods, get exercise, stop smoking and limit our wine intake. But there is something else you can do. And it is free and easy. Smile! Smiling is the first step in fighting physical and mental stress. When people feel stressed or under pressure, they may not make the best decisions about what to eat. They may overeat, smoke or drink too much. They may not get enough exercise or sleep. And all of this can lead to health problems. Once people smile, they are relaxing. This relaxation directly lowers blood pressure, and returns blood sugar to normal levels.
