[2023·山东省滨州市高三二模]If you visited a big aquarium such as SeaWorld or the Miami Seaquarium a decade ago. Performances by tiger whales were probably a centerpiece of the visiting experience. However, animal advocates have pushed to end the harmful practice of keeping these enormous whales locked up in small pools and forcing them to perform for audiences. Now the good news is emerging from this continuing movement. Lolita, one tiger whale living in the Miami Seaquarium, may soon be released to the Salish Sea where her mother lives.
Lolita's possible homecoming is a longtime coming. The enormous animal was caught in 1970 in the Salish Sea, a body of water off the coast of Washington, which his home to tiger whales. Until now she has spent the past 52 years in captivity in Miami. Her tank is considered the smallest among those of captive whales in America. She has been forced to perform for crowds for decades. This has resulted in injuries. She has hit her head while performing “fast swims”, and her blood work has been abnormal.
Whales in captivity can suffer severe health issues. Lolita outlived her tank mate Hugo, who died of aneurism (动脉瘤) caused by hitting his head on the aquarium walls. “Lolita's lucky,” said Howard Garrett, a whale researcher and activist. “It's against all odds that she is still alive. I think it's her mental health that keeps her physical health in good shape. She is a complete miracle in her ability to stay healthy.”
According to the United States Department of Agriculture, Lolita may not be getting enough food and water. This only adds to the list of health concerns which can appear in captivity. Activists who have been pushing for decades may at last see Lolita return to the Salish Sea, where her mother, a 93 year old tiger whale known as “Ocean Sun”, leads a pod. Returning these magnificent creatures to their natural habitat is a humane solution advocated for by the likes of the International Marine Mammal Project.

A.Her mental state is sound.
B.Hugo influenced her positively.
C.She gets timely medical treatment.
D.Whale researchers offer necessary aids.
3.What can we know from the last paragraph
A.Activists have succeeded in accomplishing the project.
B.Lolita will definitely fit in with the pod led by her mother.
C.Joint efforts are being made to release creatures like Lolita.

[2023·石家庄市教学质量检测(三)]While the rest of us are sleeping, freshwater turtles (龟) from Central America to Asia are getting out of the water and basking (月光浴) at night. There have been reports of this behavior before, but now a new study is the first to document the widespread occurrence. The findings suggest this may be a common and almost entirely overlooked aspect of many species' ecology.
Dr. Donald McKnight, one of the researchers, said he and a colleague first observed freshwater turtles night basking at the Ross River in Townsville, Australia. “We think it's related to temperature. The water is staying so warm at night that it's actually warmer than the turtles like to be and they can cool down by coming out of the water,” says McKnight.
For the study, researchers put cameras to watch the night activity of as many freshwater turtle species as possible. The cameras were set up in 25 locations. They were programmed to take a photo every two minutes. They collected data on 29 species of freshwater turtles.
It would be lovely to think the turtles are just enjoying some leisure time when things are quiet. But the researchers note that in most cases, the turtles got out of water when the water was too warm and the air was cooler. Given the warming planet, that's admittedly a bit depressing. However, not all of the nighttime baskers were escaping too warm water. According to the study, turtles in India exhibited more basking on cooler nights, rather than warmer nights, and those in Africa spent more time basking at night in winter than in summer. The reasons for these differences are unclear. It may be that at some sites or seasons, turtles are escaping
unfavourably warm water temperatures, while at others, they are taking advantage of the warm air to increase their body temperature and escape unfavourably cold water.
Regardless of the “why” behind different species' reasons for midnight basking, it's a fascinating look at behaviors not previously documented by scientists. And it is at least encouraging to know that turtles are figuring out important behaviors tied to climate change.
5.Why do the freshwater turtles from Australia get out of water at night
A.To search for extra food.
B.To avoid natural enemies.
C.To cool themselves down.
D.To enjoy the quietness outside.
6.What is paragraph 3 mainly about
A.How the study was conducted.
B.What the study brought about.
C.Why the study was carried out.
D.Where the study was made.
7.Which of the following are the researchers certain about
A.Turtles in Africa flee water often on summer nights.
B.The water is unfavorable for turtles to survive in India
C.The reasons for turtles' different behaviors are obvious.
D.Night basking is caused by the change of water temperature.
8.How does the author feel about the finding
A.Skeptical. B.Positive.
C.Surprised. D.Desperate.

WHEN KIM JI UN lived in Seoul, she worried about finding a good job. Now, she is worried that drought may ruin her crop. The 23 year old started a farm last year. Her first harvest was a success; she was surprised that her black beans did better than her strawberries.
Ms Kim is part of a phenomenon called kitchen, or returning to rural life. Coined a millennium ago, the term crops up during periods of economic hardship. This time, in the wake of the pandemic, many new farmers have never lived in the countryside before. By planting young farmers in rural areas, the government hopes to enjoy big rewards in future.
The plan is working. In 2021 nearly 380,000 people moved to the fort with digital technology gives young farmers a__leg__up,__says Cho Kyung ik, the director of the Beginning Farmer's Centre, an institution educating those who wish to kwichon at its downtown offices. They sell fresh produce on Naver, South Korea's largest search engine.
The centre teaches techniques like how to use a tractor (拖拉机) or select the best crops. It arranges a trial period during which ambitious farmers work under the guidance of an old hand, learning what it means to do back breaking labour from dawn to dusk.
The most important lesson is how to get on with the locals. The villagers are also offered tips on how to act towards the newcomers. That part is not yet a total success. Ms Kim says her neighbours have a bad temper. “The old people come in here and give me unwanted advice, or say that I will never be able to grow anything,”she says. Her black beans beg to differ. She and the South Korean government will be hoping that her crops put the argument to rest for good.

[2023·山东省烟台市高三二模]“I know when to go out, and when to stay in.”, English rock star David Bowie once confidently sang in his hit single. When it comes to consuming food, the decisiveness claimed by the singer songwriter is hard to achieve. I disagree with the statement and argue it's better to eat out than to order home delivery.
To begin with, when setting foot in a restaurant, we're immediately greeted not only by a server ready to seat us, but by a flood of physical feelings—the eyes take in the internal decoration of the place, the nose breathes in the pleasant smell of expertly plated food and the ears pick up on competing sounds of customer chatter and attractive in store music. To eat out is to experience an atmosphere unique to each restaurant. Something as special as that simply can't be reproduced by ordering home delivery. Eating out is, without doubt, the more exciting and thus better choice.
Eating out becomes even more appealing when staying home proves too painful. Whether it is because we need a temporary fight from our family or that we simply want to spend some quality time outside with loved ones, going out for a meal can be a break from the hard labour of domestic living.
We could take it as an opportunity for self care—to treat ourselves by dressing up, arriving in style at a fancy restaurant and ordering a slightly more luxurious meal to refresh our weary soul. Ordering home delivery would only contribute to feelings of being penned in while; eating out is an escape for the trapped individual. Food delivery app users reason it's a trouble and less convenient to dress up and eat out.
However, it's worth noting we may not always get our food in the most satisfactory condition when opting for home delivery. There's a risk of receiving food orders with missing items or even entirely wrong orders that can't be sent back. What we sacrifice for convenience might just wind up being inconvenient. Consequently, it makes more sense to eat out rather than risk disappointment by ordering home delivery.
5.What does the author mainly talk about
A.Dining options.
B.Cuisine culture.
C.Consumption level.
D.Food categories.
6.What advantage of eating out is highlighted in Paragraph 2
A.Quality service.
B.Comfort and convenience.
C.Sensory enjoyment.
D.A reasonable mix of nutrition.
7.What does the author think of ordering home delivery
A.It's quite pricy.
B.It may let consumers down.
C.It may cause food waste.
D.It's not environmental friendly.
8.How is the text developed
A.By providing examples.
B.By following space order.
C.By making comparisons.
D.By analyzing mental processes.

Massimo Bottura, a three Michelin Starred chef, has extended his culinary (烹饪的) empire globally. However, he says that the peak of all of his achievements is Milan's Refettorio Ambrosiano and the following 12 global branches.
At Refettorio Ambrosiano, dinner guests are greeted by name. They dine on fine china at tables created by the country's most sought after furniture designers. The waiters are polite, and the chefs have been trained under the finest restaurateurs in the world. The set menu changes every day, depending on what comes in with the morning's delivery.
This morning's delivery contains dry arugula (芝麻菜), chicken close to its sell by date and too ugly to be sold oranges. By dinner, however, the supermarket castoffs have been transformed into a three course meal. The 100 or so diners—refugees, the homeless, and the unemployed—enjoy the meal with obvious pleasure, laughing with the volunteer waiters, praising the volunteer chefs, and forgetting, at least for an hour, the challenges of a life lived on the streets.
The brightest gems in Bottura's culinary empire are not restaurants at all. He thinks of them as spaces that shine a light on the dignity of their guests while focusing attention on the food waste problem by turning foods that were otherwise going to be headed toward rubbish bins into Michelin Guide worthy meals.
Bottura first thought of Refettorio Ambrosiano as a pop up concept for the 2015 World Expo in Milan. The organizers had invited him to cook for the grand opening. Bottura proposed something different. He wanted to invite the world's best chefs to cook with him for the city's homeless, using leftovers. That idea soon got supported and turned into something more permanent.
Today, the Refettorio is “a movement,” Bottura says. “It is a model for fighting food waste and isolation on the front lines. And it starts by looking at an old carrot or a piece of hard bread and catching sight of gold.”
1.How do the Refettorio Ambrosianos differ from Bottura's other restaurants
A.The waiters are well trained.
B.The tables are custom made.
C.They are three Michelin starred.
D.Daily delivery decides the set menu.
2.Which of the following best describes the event at Refettorio Ambrosiano
A.An evening gathering for local chefs.
B.A charity sale of supermarket castoffs
C.A wealthy meal for the less fortunate.
D.A volunteer training for the homeless
3.What does Bottura think of the Refettorio
A.It's his best profitable restaurant.
B.It's a good project for food safety.
C.It's a pop up concept to extend his business.
D.It's win win for the environment and society.
4.Which can be a suitable title for the text

[2023·山东省济南市高三一模]In conversations with strangers, people commonly tend to think they should speak less than half the conversation time to be likable. But we've discovered this idea is wrong. Our data shows that people tend to think they should speak about 45% of the time to be likable in a one on one conversation with someone new. However, it appears speaking up a bit more is actually a better strategy.
In our research, we randomly assigned people to speak for 30%, 40%, 50%, 60% of the time in a conversation with someone new. We found that the more they spoke, the more they were liked by their new partners. This was only one study with 116 participants, but the outcome is supported by other researchers' findings. For example, a previous study randomly assigned one in a pair to take on the role of “speaker” and the other to take on the role of “listener.” After engaging in 12 minute interactions, listeners liked speakers more than speakers liked listeners because listeners felt more similar to speakers than speakers did to listeners. This outcome suggests the reason people prefer those who speak up: Learning more about a new partner can make you feel like you have more in common with him or her.
Further, we assigned people to speak for up to 70% and even 90% of the time. The result shows it is not an ideal strategy. Our research does not suggest people hold down a conversational partner but rather that they feel comfortable speaking up more than they usually might.
Research like ours can help people gain a ‘more reasonable understanding of social interactions with new people and become more confident about how to make a good first impression. It has the obvious benefit of allowing us to carefully control speaking time. However, it does not reflect more natural conversations. Future research should figure out whether our findings generalize to more natural interactions.
5.What is the common belief concerning conversations with strangers
A.Speaking a little less is preferred.
B.Speaking half the time is the best.
C.Listeners are more likable than speakers.
D.Listeners fail to control the conversations.
6.How was the research carried out
A.By analyzing speaking habits.
B.By making comparisons.
C.By listing examples.
D.By collecting data.
7.What is the disadvantage of the research
A.The conversation time is limited.
B.Further study is hard to continue.
C.The findings are less widely appliable.
D.Interactions with strangers are missing.
8.In which situation can the research finding be applied
A.Attending a family gathering.
B.Partying with your friends.
C.Meeting a new teacher.
D.Making a public speech.

[2023·山东省聊城市高考一模]When it comes to making lunch for their kids, moms and dads have usual favorites. For some parents in the US, those favorites are peanut butter and jelly sandwiches—also known as PB&Js. Fruit like apples and bananas are also popular.
But one mother has an unusual go to ingredient for her children's lunches. Jenny Mollen uses funny looking candy eyes. She has learned that her children will eat any healthy food if it has edible eyeballs attached. The “eyeballs” are really pieces of candy.
Her children laugh while they eat healthy foods like bell peppers, kiwis, or dates. Mollen says candy “eyes” make lunch more fun.
“Honestly, first of all, just buy yourself some candy googly eyes. They are tried and true,” she said. She admits that “you lose something nutritionally” by giving children candy. But she thinks that getting children to eat healthy food by putting candy on it is worth it.
Mollen's lunch tricks bring together food and craft. She uses tricks because her two sons hate to eat different kinds of foods. So, she decorates their food to resemble animals or even their favorite Pokémon characters. She makes edible “bugs” made from dates, pretzel sticks for the legs, and, of course, candy “eyes”. She also uses leftover Chinese food to make panda bears from rice and seaweed.
Mollen says her lunch projects are easy to do. And her sons think they have won a big prize at their midday meal. Mollen says making fun looking, artful lunches for her children helps ease her guilt as she is a working mom. Her artful lunches are her way of reminding her children that she is thinking of them.
Mollen says she also wants to teach them healthy eating habits. She says that by getting kids to eat vegetables at a young age, they will grow up to eat healthy foods later in life. She also says it is a good way to get children to try foods from other cultures. If they need to be “tricked” sometimes, that is okay.

[2023·山东省实验中学高三一模]We all know eating ultra processed foods that make our lives easier—such as sauces, and frozen pizza—isn't good for our health. Studies have found they can raise our risk of obesity, heart problems, diabetes and cancer. They may even shorten our lives. Now, a new study has revealed eating more ultra processed foods may contribute to overall cognitive decline, including the brain executive functioning—the ability to process information and make decisions.
“While in need of further study, the new results are quite compelling and emphasize the critical role for proper nutrition in preserving and promoting brain health and reducing risk for brain diseases,”said Tanzi, professor at Harvard Medical School. He was not involved in the study but he said in his book, “They, are, very high in sugar, salt and fat, promoting systemic inflammation, perhaps the most major threat to healthy aging. Meanwhile, since they are convenient and quick, they also replace fiber foods important for maintaining the health and balance of bacteria in your gut,” he added, “which is particularly important for brain health and reducing risk of age related brain diseases like Alzheimer”.
The study, presented at the 2022 Alzheimer's Association International Conference, followed over 10,000 Brazilians for 10 years. “In Brazil, ultra processed foods make up 25% to 30% of total calorie intake. Ultra processed foods are defined as “industrial formulations of food substances containing little or no whole foods and typically include flavorings, colorings and other chemical additives” according to the study.
“People consuming over 20% of daily calories from processed foods had a 28% faster decline in global cognition and a 25% faster decline in executive functioning compared to people who not,” said study coauthor Natalia. Those in the study who ate the most ultra processed foods were “more likely to be younger, women, white, had higher education and incomes, and were more likely to have never smoked,” the study found.
“People need to know they should cook more,” Suemoto said. “And it's worth it because you're going to protect your heart and guard your brain,” she added.

[2023·山东省济南市二模]As the world has changed, so has education. Since 2018, Nelly Cheboi and her non profit TechLit Africa have been bringing computer technology into schools in Kenya, helping students join the digital world, and unlock their potential. With its own software programs, curriculum (课程) and teacher training programs, this non profit hopes to change Africa.
In 2012, Cheboi received a scholarship to College in Illinois that changed her life. She grew up in poverty in rural Kenya, watching her mother struggle to support her family alone. Cheboi had no experience with computers before moving to the US to study. She handwrote papers and then struggled to type them out on a laptop computer. Somehow she fell in love with computer science and began a career in the field. But she did not lose sight of her origins. “As an undergraduate, I invested all of my income from various campus jobs into my community back in Kenya,” she said on the TechLit Africa website. But soon she wanted to do more for it and that is how TechLit Africa began.
Cheboi recalled how her background helped her understand how important technological knowledge could be for children living in poverty. She built a school with the idea of bringing computer science as part of kids' curriculum growing up. But she found that it was going to be really hard to impact as many people as possible, because it was so hard to raise fund. Then in order to reach more students, she introduced computer training to existing schools. Cheboi physically dragged over 40 recycled computers that had been donated to them by various tech companies to Kenya in suitcases.
Now, since the non profit has grown, it works with various companies that help them clean the donated computers of data and send them to Africa. TechLit Africa runs its own curriculum with its own software programs in 10 Kenyan schools, and the hope is to increase to 100 throughout Africa by next year. The Mustard Seed Project is getting closer to one of its initiatives—building affordable senior housing on the Key Peninsula, Washington.
The Nonprofit carries out the project so that people don't have to leave the Key Peninsula as they age and have home care needs. “We hope to build in Key Center, a good, central location for our community. Our vision is to have a campus with a cafe and meeting spaces, 10 independent living cottages that have one or two bedrooms with laundry, housekeeping and one meal a day provided, and then assisted living for 30 residents,” said board president Sara Thompson. “We want this to be a place that draws the entire community in, rather than a setting that sets elders aside in an isolated environment.”
More than a year ago, a longtime supporter of the organization made a major gift to undertake a long desired study to understand both the needs of the community and the financial feasibility (可行性) for senior housing. As a result, The Mustard Seed Project had a meeting in November at the Key Peninsula Civic Center to explain the results of the study and to plan for the next steps.
“We'll be applying for a predevelopment loan to do all the necessary planning,” The Mustard Seed Project Executive Director Edie Morgan said. “We're aware of affordable loans for the assisted living section of the project, and can get standard financing for the other buildings. But there will be a funding gap, and we expect to raise nearly $3 million to make this happen. I believe we can do it.”
The entire project, once the project manager is identified, is expected to take about two years.

[2023·雅礼中学考前适应性训练]With China's large trade volume, the increased use of the Chinese currency renminbi (RMB) in international trade will help stabilize the international trading system, a leading business insider has said.
The RMB, or the yuan, is getting increasingly popular and acceptable as more and more countries are willing to sign currency exchange deals with China, and more countries are starting to use the currency to settle cross border trade, said Wu Kegang, director of BCC LinkTo China, a partnership project between the British Chambers of Commerce (BCC) and the China Council for the Promotion of International Trade.

“How beautiful the jasmine (茉莉花) is! A sweet smell covers the budding twigs. So fragrant, so white, admired by all lips.” The famed Chinese folk song JasmineFlower has reached a global audience with its beautiful melody and lyrics. Equally popular is the traditionally made Jasmine tea, whose elegant fragrance and mellow taste fascinate countless tea drinkers.
Chen Chengzhong has a big say in the production of Jasmine tea as he is a practitioner of Fuzhou Jasmine tea scenting techniques. The 72 year old tea maker started his career early in his teenage years, when he became an apprentice in a state owned tea factory.
Jasmine tea is a kind of tea scented (带有某种香味) with the fragrance of jasmine blossoms and typically has green tea as its base. The natural scenting process consumes fresh jasmine blossoms, picked during the daytime when the buds are closed, Chen said. And the green tea leaves from the spring harvest are stored until the most fragrant jasmine blossoms in late summer.
The hot and humid climate and the red soil in East China's Fujian province provide favorable conditions for jasmine and tea plants to thrive, becoming the high quality ingredients that are needed for Jasmine tea. “Our jasmine flowers and tea leaves are all sourced from Fujian in large quantities, despite the fact that they are pricier than those from other origins,” Chen said.
When the fresh jasmine flowers are harvested, they are mixed with layers of tea leaves. Workers stir (搅拌) the tea leaves and flowers overnight, allowing the leaves to absorb the fragrant scent of the jasmine blossoms.
In the morning, the flowers are sorted, the leaves are dried, and the process is repeated. More repetition makes for a more robust jasmine flavor, and it takes at least nine scenting processes to produce Jasmine tea of a superb grade.
Having been appointed as the representative practitioner of Fuzhou Jasmine tea scenting techniques, Chen now focuses more on passing on the scenting techniques, giving lectures to students and apprentices. Chen's son Chen Zheng is motivated to follow in his father's footsteps and move forward with the scenting techniques. “Like my father, I also hope to practice this traditional skill that has profound cultural deposits, and pass it on,” Chen Zheng said.
5.What is the author's purpose of quoting the song JasmineFlower

B.To show the popularity of the song.
C.To introduce the topic—Jasmine tea.
D.To clarify the origin of Jasmine tea.
6.Why are Fujian's jasmines and tea leaves the high quality ingredients
A.Because their fragrances are mixed together.
B.Because Fujian is rich in jasmines and tea leaves.
C.Because they are pricier than those from other areas.
D.Because Fujian has suitable climate and soil conditions.
7.Which of the following is RIGHT about the process of making Jasmine tea
A.It uses the most fragrant jasmine blossoming in early summer.
B.It takes at most nine scenting processes to produce Jasmine tea of a superb grade.
