What did the man in this story do
When a plane from London arrived at Sydney airport, workers began to unload a number of wooden boxes which contained clothing. No one could account for the fact that one of the boxes was extremely heavy. It suddenly occurred to one of the workers to open up the box. He was astonished at what he found. A man was lying in the box on top of a pile of woolen goods. He was so surprised at being discovered that he did not even try to run away. After he was arrested, the man admitted hiding in the box before the plane left London. He had had a long and uncomfortable trip, for he had been confined to the wooden box for over eighteen hours. The man was ordered to pay £3,500 for the cost of the trip. The normal price of a ticket is £2,000!

Grammar focus 语法
1. When a plane from London arrived at Sydney airport, workers began to unload a number of wooden boxes which contained clothing.
a number of表示许多,number前还可以加上large或great等来表示数量很大。如:
He made a large number of mistakes in the exam.
The concert attracted a great number of people.
2. No one could account for the fact that one of the boxes was extremely heavy.
这是一个同位语从句,因为连接词that后面的句子one of the boxes was extremely heavy.其中有只箱子特别重,是对前面的the fact这个事实,作进一步的说明和解释,也就是说the fact就是one of the boxes was extremely heavy.
That's the question that everybody wants to know.(定语从句)
The question who killed the man was unknown.(同位语从句)
Can you account for the money you spent
3. It suddenly occurred to one of the workers to open up the box.
本句中it是形式主语,真正的主语是后面的不定式to open up the box.
sth. occurred to sb.
It occurred to me that I didn't finish my homework.
4. He was astonished at what he found.
这是一个宾语从句,what he found作介词at的宾语。
be astonished at表示对……
We were astonished at his sudden death.
5. A man was lying in the box on top of a pile of woolen goods.
on top of表示在……之上。如:
Red flags are flying on top of the city wall.
a pile of表示一堆……。如:
I have a huge pile of books to read.
6. He was so surprised at being discovered that he did not even try to run away.
7. After he was arrested, the man admitted hiding in the box before the plane left London.
admit doing sth.
She admitted lying to the police.
8. He had had a long and uncomfortable trip, for he had been confined to the wooden box for over eighteen hours.
The thief is confined in prison.
