The alarm sounded sharply. Seven-thirty. Too early for a Saturday! And much earlier for her birthday! Rosa thought about her birthdays in hometown, when her grandmother, Abuelita, would make a cake for her, humming
(哼) old songs in the kitchen.
“Rosa! Hrry!”
“Yes, Mama,” Rosa called. She wanted to stay in bed, but ever since she had turned fourteen, Saturdays here meant helping Mama at hair salon (发廊). “Where is papa ” Rosa asked. “He left an hour ago. We must go, too,”
said Mama.
Rosa and Mama hurried to the bus stop. Sharing the umbrella made them hit into each other. Mama laughed.
Rosa didn’t think it was funny. “I don’t like here,” she said. “I miss everything about hometown, especially
Abuelita!” “I miss her too,” Mama said. “But there is more work here. We are able to send money to Abuelita.”
Rosa nodded. Still, it was hard.
As Rosa arrived, the salon was already full of people. “Hello,” said Morena, Rosa’s cousin.
Rosa took the towels from a basket and started to fold (叠) them. She took a deep breath of their clean fresh
smell, and was reminded again of the flowers of Abuelita. “I kept thinking about Abuelita. I miss her so much,
especially today!” Rosa said. “Me, too,” Morena smiled. “But that won’t get this work done.”
Rosa carried the towels to the sinks (水池). All the chairs were filled with waiting customers. Rosa hurried over. Mama was shampooing (给 …用洗发水) an old lady with a towel across her face. “Here we are. Rosa has
brought you another towel.” Mama gently lifted the lady’s head and placed the towel at the base of her neck.
“Better ” The woman’s face was still covered, and she didn’t speak, but she waved her hand as if to say yes.
As Mama continued, the lady hummed an old song softly.

It was thirty years ago, and I was twenty years old as a new teacher in an elementary school in Toronto,

knowing about nature. Mike would then help me teach the rest of the class these skills. We all had a lot of fun, and
a kind of un-spoken trust began to build up between us. Surprisingly, he appeared eager to join in this new
father-son relationship.
Early in our special relationship, Mike told me his dream. Most of the kids in the class wanted to be doctors, musicians, teachers or some such things, but not Mike. “I want to be a gangster(土匪), Mr. Kowalchuk!” he said.
This was no joke—this was his wish, and he was most serious about it.
I believe all children have a gift. Everyone has the same chance to be the best person they can be. I realized
this boy was smart, and that with a little love, attention, understanding, guidance and encouragement, he could
probably achieve whatever he put his mind to. I explained to him that a good gangster had to read a large number of

was eager and interested.

One day, my husband Mike and I decided to climb Nippletop Mountains. Our friends Emily and Jane gladly
joined us. They were experienced hikers (远足者) .
We set off in the morning. It took us less than five hours to get to the top. It was almost 1:30 p.m. We’d have
to head down soon while it was still light.
A friendly young hiker waved to us. “Hey, want me to take your picture ” “Sure!” I said. Emily and Jane
squeezed (挤) in next to us. Mike gave the hiker his Phone. He took a few pictures. We took a different path so we
could get down before dark. It was harder but shorter.
We spaced ourselves apart so we wouldn’t fall on each other. I led the way, setting a fast pace. The trail grew steeper. Carefully I sidestepped down the slope (斜坡). A quarter mile down, I stopped and looked up the trail for
the others. I couldn’t see them.
Then a scream broke the quiet. Mike! He must have fallen. I climbed up the frozen slope. Finally I saw him,
his hands were seizing his right leg. My eyes went to his foot, which pointed the wrong way. I shouted, “What
happened ” “I slipped on the ice,” he said.
“Don’t worry,” I said, searching into my backpack but found nothing for a broken bone. Moments later, my
friends came cautiously down. Jane checked Mike’s ankle. “We need to fix it with sticks,” she said.
“Here, try this,” I said, handing over my hiking poles (杖). I took off one of my shirts. Jane fixed a pole to Mike’s leg. But there was no way the three of us could carry him down this mountain, I pulled out my cell phone
and dialed 911. No signal (信号) .
“Can I help ” It was the guy who’d taken our picture at the summit. “My husband fell. He’s hurt, and I don’t have service here. “Take mine,” he said. “I got service near the top.” I’d have to leave Mike and climb higher to get

阅读下面材料,根据其内容和所给段落开头语续写两段,使之构成一篇完整的短文。
Willard P. Franklin was a skinny and short boy. From the first day he entered my junior-high classroom, he
existed in his own world, shutting out his classmates and me, his teacher.
My attempts to develop a friendly relationship with him were always met with no reaction. Even a “Good Morning, Willard” received no reply. Willard was strictly a loner who seemed to have no desire or need to break
his silence.
Shortly after the Thanksgiving holiday, we received word that we would collect money on Christmas for the
less fortunate people in our school district. After collection, the school headteacher would show us a list of the poor
families in our school and send the money to those who most needed help through the Christmas collection.
“Christmas is a season of giving,” I told my students. “There are a few students in the school who might not have a happy holiday season. By contributing to our Christmas collection, you will help to buy food, clothing and
toys for these people in need. We’ll start the collection tomorrow. ”
When I called for the contributions the next day, I discovered that most of the students had forgotten except a
few including Willard P. Franklin. Willard dug deep into his pants pockets as he walked up to my desk.

My father is a practical man. He can’t explain calculus (微积分) , but he can tell you how much pressure boiler
needs. He put himself through night school to become an engineer, but that was only after he worked as an
electrician and a mechanic.
One day we walked by a toy store window. Sitting in the corner was the most unusual dollhouse (玩具屋) I’d
ever seen. It was shaped like an upturned log.
“Oh, Daddy,” I said, “isn’t it beautiful Do you think Santa Claus will bring it to me ”
Dad looked at the $100 price tag—an exorbitant (过高的) figure in those days. “I think even Santa couldn’t
afford this house,” he joked, hiking up his belt as he often does when he’s nervous. “Maybe one day, sweetheart.”
On Christmas morning, I awoke early and raced downstairs. In the dim (昏暗的) light, I made out some
wrapped boxes under the tree—but none large enough to contain my dollhouse. Dad could see my disappointment.
He pulled me onto his lap and gently told me how, as a boy, he had wanted a red wagon, but his father couldn’t
afford one. He said he made his own from wood and old wheels he found. “I’ll make one for you,” Dad promised
me.
And right after Christmas, despite all the unfinished projects at home, he started it. I had thought it was an
easy toy to make, but every step of the long process was more complex (复杂的) than I had expected. Night after night, Dad would come home from his job dead tired, yet he’d always find time to work on the log house. In the
dim light, dad was always busy creating my dollhouse.

My Dad’s Best Flower
I remember my first home was a small apartment on the second floor with a lovely and spacious balcony.
When my mom was busy in the kitchen, she let me stay on the balcony watching the kids playing in the street. On
that balcony I played sometimes with my elder sister, Maria. She was seven years old and when my mom was
absent, she was like a mother to me. The balcony was a great hobby place for my father. After his work he used to
grow carnations (康乃馨) in flower boxes. His carnations were red, pink and white, and everyone appreciated them
for their beauty.
He took care of them with so much love and devotion. He dealt carefully with his flowers like a mother taking care of her baby. Many times I sat on the floor of the balcony for hours observing him and his lovely flowers with patience. He was always doing something on that balcony. He was watering them every day, cleaning the balcony floor, changing the potting soil and when the stems were thick, strong and high enough, he started his improvement
operation attentively like a doctor.
My dad took a tiny knife and with his left hand he held the stem of the carnation and measured the height.
Then he made a small mark on the stem with his finger. Afterwards he made a sharp cut with the knife, just enough to fit in again of barley (插穗的芽). Then he bandaged the stem with a small bandage. His job was then to water the plants and to take care of them. “No one should touch them,” he said to Mom. Every day, when he came home from
work he went straight to the balcony.
Mom used to tell us, “Do not touch Daddy’s flowers.” For us it was a fascinating experience to watch how the
small stems were growing and making flowers. When the carnations had grown big enough, my dad enjoyed
watching them every day. We the kids did too.

I was lacking in everything needed to start a new friendship.
My parents moved to the town when they decided to look for new jobs but they didn’t realize I was really hurt when I said goodbye to my old friends. It felt awful to be a new student in the school and when my classmates were
chatting, what I could do was to be caught up in my thoughts watching the clouds outside the window. I was not
good at math or history; nor was I good at drawing or dancing. I was shy and timid. I had a few friends back at my
hometown and it seemed that they were the only ones who I could be friends with for my whole life. I felt I had
achieved a point of saturation with regard to having friends and I could make no further addition to my friend list. I
was ashamed of myself, so I believed I deserved no notice from others until Emily came to my world.
Emily was fearless, outspoken and easy to go. She was everything I was not and I was too shy to come out of my shell. I met Emily in school almost every day and yet I never talked to her. We were in the same class but we
were like poles apart. How I wished I could be like her or at least be a friend of hers!
It was another ordinary day.
I wandered to the bus stop in the morning and waited for the school bus. Birds were singing songs with their friends but who could I sing songs with I got on the bus and went straight to my usual seat, complaining in a low voice about getting up early and going to school like every other day, and about how things were going to be the
same all over again. Little did I realize something different would happen that day.

When I got up to get down the bus, my schoolbag was stuck in the armrest.

It was summer, and my dad wanted to treat me to a vacation like never before. He decided to take me on a trip
to the Wild West.
We took a plane to Albuquerque, a big city in the state of New Mexico. We reached Albuquerque in the late
afternoon. Uncle Paul, my dad’s friend, picked us up from the airport and drove us up to his farm in Pecos.
His wife Tina cooked us a delicious dinner and we got to know his sons Ryan and Kyle. My dad and I spent
the night in the guestroom of the farm house listening to the frogs and water rolling down the river nearby. Very
early in the morning, Uncle Paul woke us up to have breakfast. “The day starts at dawn on my farm,” he said. After breakfast, I went to help Aunt Tina feed the chickens, while my dad went with Uncle Paul to take the sheep out to
graze (吃草). I was impressed to see my dad and Uncle Paul riding horses. They looked really cool.
In the afternoon, I asked Uncle Paul if I could take a hose ride, and he said yes, as long as my dad went with
me. I wasn’t going to take a horse ride by myself anyway. So, my dad and I put on our new cowboy hats, got on our
horses, and headed slowly towards the mountains. “Don’t be late for supper,” Uncle Paul cried, “and keep to the
track so that you don’t get lost!” “OK!” my dad cried back. After a while Uncle Paul and his farm house were out
of sight. It was so peaceful and quiet and the colors of the brown rocks, the deep green pine trees, and the late
afternoon sun mixed to create a magic scene. It looked like a beautiful woven (编织的) blanket spread out upon the
ground just for us.

He’s hurt, and I don’t
have service here. “Take mine,” he said. “I got service near the top.” I’d have to leave Mike and climb higher to get
service.

Even a “Good
Morning, Willard” received no reply.

【答案】
)
Carefully, he dropped two quarters into the small container. For a moment, just a moment, he managed a weak smile. Before I could say a word, he turned and walked back to his desk quietly. When I looked at his thin figure, a mixture of warmth and surprise swept over me. “Maybe I was wrong, but I believe Willard might be getting ready to become a part of the world around him,” I said to myself. After school, I took our collected money to the school
headteacher.
When the headteacher passed me the list, I discovered Willard’s family was on the top. So surprised was I that
I couldn’t help sharing with the headteacher what the boy had done. The headteacher gave a thumbs-up with a
satisfied smile, nodding his head slightly. A sense of contentment spread over my face. What impressed me most was that a boy of a poor family was still willing to help others. It seemed hopeful to develop a friendly relationship
with him. Being poor is not our fault but being helpful is a good virtue and a choice.

After his work he used to grow carnations (康乃馨) in flower boxes.

Birds were singing songs with their friends but who could I sing songs with I got on the bus and went straight to my usual seat, complaining in a low
voice about getting up early and going to school like every other day, and about how things were going to be the
same all over again. Little did I realize something different would happen that day.
Para. 1:
When I got up to get down the bus, my schoolbag was stuck in the armrest.

9.【河北省石家庄 2023 年高一试题】
阅读下面材料,根据其内容和所给段落开头语续写两段,使之构成一篇完整的短文。
