1. while作名词
while作名词，作“一会儿”“一段时间”解。
once in a while 偶尔
1）After lunch, she likes to take a nap for a while.
她喜欢午饭后眯一会儿。
2）It takes a while to adapt to a new environment.
适应新环境需要花一段时间。
Several years ago， Feng Jicai put down his pen for a while.
几年前，冯骥才有段时间停止了写作。
I’ll be back in a little while.
我一会儿就回来。
Coming to another country to study requires a big adjustment and it takes a while to fit it.
来到另一个国家求学，需要花一段时间来适应。
2.while作连词
引导时间状语 意思是“当...时候”
while 最常见的用法是引导状语从句，表示“当...时候”。注意，while 后面的谓语动词一般为延续性动词，表示这个动作会延续一段时间。
比如：
While she was watching TV, she fell asleep. 她看电视看睡着了。
While they were busy playing their games, the couch caught on fire. 当他们忙着打游戏的时候，沙发起火了。
We must strike while the iron is hot.
趁热打铁。
Mary watched TV while she ate her supper.玛丽边吃饭边看电视。
While she was listening to the radio, she fell asleep. 她听着收音机睡着了。
Stand still while I take your photograph. 我给你拍照时站着不要动。
Have we got enough books to read while we are on holiday 假期里我们有足够的书看吗
Were there any calls for me while I was out 我出去的时候，有人来过电话吗
She hates anyone listening while she is telephoning. 她打电话时不愿让任何人听。
引导让步状语从句
意思是“虽然…但是….”、“尽管…但是…”(多放于句首)
While polls show Britons rate “the countryside” alongside the royal family, Shakespeare and the National Health Service (NHS) as what makes them proudest of their country, this has limited political support.（2016年真题）
尽管民调显示，英国人将 "乡村 "与皇室、莎士比亚和国民健康服务（NHS）并列评为他们国家最引以为傲的元素，但这种观点在政治上的支持力度有限。
While traditional “paid” media – such as television commercials and print advertisements – still play a major role, companies today can exploit many alternative forms of media.（2011 真题）

引导条件状语
意思是“只要”，这时候while相当于 as long as
There will be life while there is water and air.
=There will be life as long as there is water and air.
只要有空气和水,就有生命。
3.while作并列连词
1）while作并列连词时，前后分句有对比意味，表示句意的转折，作“而；却（whereas）”解。
while/but
while强调二者的对比，而but强调前后的转折关系。
The son was having a good meal at home，while the parents were working in the fields.儿子在家里大吃大喝，而父母却在田里辛勤劳作。
Honey is sweet, but the bee stings. 蜂蜜很甜，但蜜蜂蛰人。eg:
Waving one’s hand is to say “Goodbye”. Nodding the head means agreement，while shaking it means disagreement.
挥手表示再见，点头表示同意，而摇头表示不同意。
Some people waste food while others haven't enough.有些人浪费粮食,然而有些人却吃不饱。
You like sports, while I prefer music.你喜欢体育,而我更喜欢音乐。
Cloning plants is straightforward while cloning animals is very complicated.
克隆植物简单，但克隆动物就非常复杂了。
She loves playing piano, while her sister is only interested in guitar. 她喜欢弹钢琴，而她的姐姐（妹妹）只对吉他感兴趣。
Most archaeological sites have been located by means of careful searching, while many others have been discovered by accident. （2014年真题）
