1. before 的基本用法
before的词性与词义如下：
prep. 在......以前；（次序或排列）在前面；当面；
conj. 在......以前；到......之前
adv. 之前；过去
⒈)表示时间，与after相对。如：
August comes before September.
8月份在9月份之前。He came to see me the day before yesterday.
他前天来看我了。
She has lived here since before the war.
她从战前就一直在这儿住。
She have already finished his homework before lunch.
午餐前她已经完成作业了。
He played basketball with his friends the day before yesterday
前天他和他的朋友打了一场篮球。
The road should be completed before the end of the year.
这条路应在年底完工。
2.)表示位置，与behind相对。
The man before the computer is nick.She has to appear before the court.
她必须出庭受审。
We knelt down before Grandma's grave.
我们在奶奶的墓前跪下。
3.)(顺序)在.....之前.先于 (跟句子是连词)
Your name comes before mine on the list.
名单上你的名字排在我的前面。
Those with babies can get on the bus before others.带小孩子的人可以先上汽车.
4.)（重要性）在…之前，比…更重要
I put my wife and my kids before anyone else.
我把妻子和孩子看的比任何人都重要。
He puts his work before everything (= regards it as more important than anything else).
他一切以工作为重。
You were before me in the queue.
你排在我前面。
5.）在…面前，当着…的面（=in front of）
He was brought before the judge.
直译：他被带到了法官面前。
意译：他被带上法庭。
2. before的其它用法
⒈)与情态动词can/could连用
这时候从句虽为肯定形式，根据汉语表达习惯译成“还没来得及就”，如：
Before I could get in a word，he had measured me.
我还没来得及插话他就为我量好了尺寸。
Before she could move，she hear a loud noise，which grew to a terrible error.
她还没来得及迈步，就听见一声巨响，接着就是可怕的隆隆轰鸣。
⒉)用于肯定句中强调主句所表达的时间，距离长，或花费的精力大，译成“才”
（1）The bus driver almost knocked me down before he saw me.
（译：巴士司机差点把我撞到，才看到我。）
（2）The fire lasted about four hours before the firefighters could control.
（译：大火持续了大约四个小时，消防队员才得以控制住。）
（3）Five hours passed before the soldier came to himself.
（译：五个小时过去了，那个战士才恢复意识。）
We had sailed four days and four nights before we saw lands.
我们航行了四天四夜才看到陆地。
We waited a long time before the train arrived.
我们等了很长时间火车才到。
⒊)用于否定句中，强调主句所表达的时间，距离短，或花费的精力小，译成“不到……就”如：
（1） Someone called me up in the middle of the night, but they hung up before I could answer the phone.
(译：有人半夜给我打电话，但是我还没来得及接电话，他们就挂了。)
（2） He announced the ending of the meeting before I could get in a word(插嘴).
（译：我还没来得及插嘴，他就宣布会议结束了。）
（3） It became dark before we finished our task.
（译：我们还未完成任务，天就黑了。）
We hadn't run a mile before he felt tired.
我们跑了还不到一英里他就累了。
⒋)主句含有hardly，scarcely等半否定副词时可以译为“刚……就”
(1) We had scarcely left our school before it began to rain.
(2) He had barely taken his place before the bell rang.
这时候主句应用过去完成时态，从句用过去时，还可以用when替代before如：
We had scarcely reached the school before/when the bell rang.
我们刚到学校铃声就响了。
⒌)有时还有“宁愿”的意思
I'd shoot myself before I apologized to him.我宁死也不向他道歉。
⒍)用于It+be/take+时间段+before句型
在这一句型中又可以根据主从句的时态分成两种情况。
若主句是一般时将来时态，从句是一般现在时.若主句是肯定句意思是“要过多长时间才”；若主句是否定形式翻译成“用不了多久就”。
It will be two weeks before everything returns to normal.
两周之后一切才能恢复正常。
It will be many years before the situation improves.
这种状况或许要过许多年才能得以改善。
It won't be long before we meet again.用不了多久我们就会再见面的。
这时若主句是一般过去时从句也是一般过去时。若主句是肯定句翻译成“多长时间之后才”，若主句是否定形式翻译成“没过多久就”。如：
It was some time before I realized the truth.
过了很长一段时间我才了解到真相。
It wasn't long before she became a brave soldier.
没过多久她就成了一名勇敢的战士。
After that, it still took seven years before they got married.
他们又过了七年才结婚。
注意：当主句的谓语动词为延续性动词时，before与until有时可以互换。
It was an hour before/until the police arrived.
7.)before 作连词, +句子，引导时间状语从句。如：
Do it before you forget.
尽早动手，免得忘了。
It may be many years before the situation improves.
这种状况或许要过很多年才能得到改善。
I must finish my homework before I watch TV.
我必须做完作业才能看电视。
You can’t borrow books from the school library before you get your student card.
在你得到你的学生卡之前你不能从学校图书馆借书。
He rushed out of the room before I could say a word.
我还没来得及说一句话，他就冲出了房间。
Think it over before you act.
三思而后行。
8.)before作副词,以前
I've never seen the film Titanic before.
我以前看过<<泰坦尼克>>这部电影.
Don't run before and after.
不要前后跑。
You should have told me so before.
你早该告诉我的。
It had been fine the week before (= the previous week).
上周天气很好。
I think we've met before.
我觉得我们以前 过面。
9.) before long与long before的区别
before long意为“不久，很快”（其中before是介词，long是名词），常在句中作状语，多与动词的过去时或将来时连用。例如：
The work will be finished before long. 工作不久就会完成。
Before long he had to move on again. 不久，他被迫再次迁移。
long before意为“很久以前”（其中long是副词。long before单独使用时，before是介词；long before后接从句时，before是连词。）这个词组常与过去时或过去完成时连用，跟从句时也可用在一般现在时的句子中。例如：
She said that she had heard of it long before. 她说她早就听说过此事。
It will be long before he arrives. 还要等很久他才能到达。

It will not be/take +时间段 +before + 一般现在时从句 (时间) 要不了···就
It was a long time before I realized the truth 过了很长时间我才了解到真相。
