Standing at the finish line, 70-year-old Bob Long spent a while reflecting on the achievement he'd just made. Behind him was the wild, endless Mongolian grassland extending into the distance. This American had just become the oldest person to ever complete and win the Mongol Derby, the world's longest horse race.
Long, a rider all his life, entered the race after being inspired by All the Wild Horses, a movie based on the grueling event.
Fearing that he wouldn't be able to complete it, he set about preparing his mind and body for this "hardest, toughest, most demanding thing you can do on a horse", an annual 1,000-kilometer race that was recognized as the world's longest horse race by The Guinness Book of Records in 2011. He confirmed his belief that preparation can surpass (超越) youth, as some of the other riders were less prepared.
Although Long had been riding horses for many years, the hardship and uncertainty of the task pushed him to his limit and forced him to depend entirely on his own will. The race organizers had provided an extensive support network to keep an eye on the participants from afar (在远处). Despite that, the physical strain (体力消耗) of riding such a long distance made simple things like squatting (蹲) down at the end of the day almost impossible.
Along the vast race course there were unpredictable circumstances beyond Long's control, however well prepared he'd been. Weather was one of them, which could switch from heavy rain to burning sun unexpectedly.
Above all else, the biggest obstacle was the state of mind. Without a living soul in sight, Long was desperate for interaction, guidance, and comfort. This feeling of loneliness accounted for his hope that one of his fellow competitors would catch up.
Regardless of the hardship, Long felt a sort of spiritual adventure while traveling through the wilderness. He was provided with some memorable moments while connecting with nature. He also grew to love the country and the communities along the route.
Still holding the passion for riding, Long never dismisses (消除) the idea of competing in another Mongol Derby.
49. What made Bob Long different from other competitors in the Mongol Derby
A. He rode the whole race course alone.
B. He completed the toughest part of the course.
C. He was the oldest participant of the horse race.
D. He was most likely to enter the competition again.
50. What does the underlined word "grueling" in Paragraph 2 probably mean
A. Tough but rewarding. B. Difficult and exhausting.
C. Comfortable and pleasant. D. Romantic but time-consuming.
51. What was the biggest challenge that Long faced during the race
A. The changeable weather. B. The mental state in the course.
C. The difficulty in finding the right route. D. The physical strain of riding a long distance.
52. What is the text mainly about
A. An introduction to the Mongol Derby.
B. A review of a film based on the longest horse race.
C. The experience of the Mongol Derby's oldest winner.
D. The preparations before a long and difficult horse race.

Nowadays, it is common to see people wearing Hanfu, the traditional clothing of the Han ethnic group, at parks and attractions. More and more people are falling in love with Hanfu culture. The development of Hanfu culture has witnessed (见证) numerous changes in recent years and is taking on various forms.
Zhang Xiaomin has been a fan of Hanfu for five years now. Thanks to the popularity of social media, she can easily leam the latest trends and knowledge about Hanfu online now. "People used to only collect or appreciate Hanfu privately," Zhang said. "But now it has moved to the mass market." In the past, many people had the misunderstanding that "Han" refers to the Han Dynasty. Now more people are knowledgeable about Hanfu, and even expert in distinguishing (区分) the differences in Hanfu from different dynasties.
Miss Tang has also noticed a similar change. "Fans have become particular about the design and style of Hanfu," Miss Tang said. "For advanced hobbyists, those seemingly fairy-like Hanfu dresses are not enough, since this style has been adapted to meet the tastes of the masses. They care more about how original Hanfu style are, like Quju (曲裾) and Mamianqun or 'horse-face skirts', which look more serious and complicated."
The development of Hanfu has also triggered (引发) different events. You Gancheng has been in Hanfu circles for 13 years. "The Hanfu festival that a museum held in April offered many interesting activities like lectures, ceremonies, concerts and fairs," she said. "Hanfu culture weeks, festivals and academic forums all provide platforms for fans to communicate."
The rise of Hanfu culture also means the birth of an emerging business. Miss Cang has been running a Hanfu store for four years. The store provides Hanfu rental and photography services. "Many international schools now come to us for Hanfu events on traditional holidays," Miss Cang said. Her store also actively participates in Hanfu festivals. "We often run a stand in Hanfu fairs, selling and displaying Hanfu we've designed. Sometimes we even provide Hanfu as prizes for competitions," she said.

I am reading a novel at the moment, a story set in Britain and India in the 19th century. It was written by an Indian author who now lives in Denmark, but neither in the language of Hindi nor Danish. Although the paperback edition (平装版) I'm holding was published in New Delhi, India, four years ago, I, an American, purchased it recently from a second-hand bookshop in Tokyo, Japan.
That's quite a history already. But there's more.
The novel is a tale of various mysteries, all expertly put into a well-structured story by a very skillful author. Yet my particular copy presents even more mysteries than the tale.
One summer morning in the year of my paperback's publication-on July 15, 2012-someone else was reading it while eating breakfast in a restaurant in Mumbai, India.
I know this because I found a receipt of coffee and bread inside. I also know that this person was not the owner of the paperback immediately before me.
In fact, the owner before me was not Indian at all, but Japanese.
I know this because in the book there are handwritten notes in Japanese-translations of English words with which the reader was unfamiliar.
Japanese being a language of characters, not letters, it is not easy to determine if the note writer was a man or a woman. But the care taken to write the translations neatly in the limited spaces available on each page indicates a woman's hand.
So let us agree that it is a woman. What can we say of her Well educated, clearly, and probably a university student, who would keep a dictionary at hand while reading a novel.
But why did she suddenly stop reading The last translation in my paperback appears on Page 83, less than a third of the way through the novel. Did she give up because the book was proving too difficult Or was there some other reason
Many a novel presents mysteries, all of which are solved by the end of the tale. The mysteries presented by my little paperback, however, remain mysteries, all expertly put into a well-structured story, not by a skillful writer, but this time by the numberless vagaries (变幻莫测) of life itself.
57. What can we learn about the novel
A. It is about a world trip. B. It is well written.
C. It was written in an American restaurant. D. It was first published in the 19th century.
58. The author assumes the Japanese owner of the book was a woman based on ________.
A. the pretty handwriting B. the food written on the receipt
C. the good condition of the book D. the effort taken in writing the notes
59. Which of the following can best describe the author of this text
A. He is a great reader of historical fiction. B. He is a hard-working university student.
C. He is a productive writer with sensibility. D. He is a careful observer with imagination.
60. What's the best title for the text
A. The Tale of a Paperback B. Different Life Experiences
C. Unsolved Mysteries of Life D. A Book's Exciting Adventure

Roy Austin first experienced an African adventure in 2018. All he wanted to do was get close to some African wildlife. Although Roy did realize this dream, he found something even more meaningful in Africa.
Roy spent time in many countries throughout East Africa. He was most interested in the people of rural (农村的) Kenya, especially people of the Amboseli Primary and Secondary School.
During his stay, Roy became friends with several students and teachers at the school. He was deeply touched by their positive attitude, even thought it was hard for them to get books and other school supplies. Even finding basic stationery (文具) was a challenge, not to mention the lack of school buildings.
In rural Kenya, school buildings are not built by the government. Students, their parents, and teachers find materials and build the schools themselves, or they have to raise money to get builders' help. Without schools, buildings like libraries and classrooms are just dreams. The students and teachers of the schools very much wanted a library or at least some books to read.
After returning home to South Carolina in the United States, the Kenyan students' yearning for something as seemingly "basic" as books to read still worried Roy. He decided to do whatever he could to help these children. So he started the organization Libraries for Kids International.
Since it was started, Roy has shipped over 11,000 books to 11 schools in African countries, including Kenya and Tanzania. To keep costs down, he uses the post office to send the books instead of a carrier like FedEx. The organization has helped to supply these schools with much-needed books, which brought Roy much happiness. He plans to continue shipping books to Africa.
