As a young girl growing up in France,Sarah Toumi dreamed of becoming a leader who could make the world a better place. Her passion to help others was awakened when, from the age of nine, she accompanied her Tunisian father to his birthplace in the east of the country during holidays. There she organized homework clubs and activities for children.Toumi witnessed first-hand the destructive effect of desertification.“Within 10 years, rich farmers became worse off,and in 10 years from now they will be poor.I wanted to stop the Sahara Desert in its tracks.” A decrease in average rainfall and an increase in the severity of droughts(干旱) have led to an estimated 75 percent of Tunisia’s agricultural lands being threatened by desertification.
Toumi recognized that farming practices needed to change. She is confident that small land areas can bring large returns if farmers are able to adapt by planting sustainable crops, using new technologies for water treatment and focusing on natural products and fertilizers(肥料) rather than chemicals.
In 2012,Toumi consolidated her dream to fight the desert. She moved to Tunisia, and set up a programme named Acacias for All to put her sustainable farming philosophy into action.“I want to show young people in rural areas that they can create opportunities where they are.Nobody is better able to understand the impact of desertification and climate change than somebody who is living with no access to water.”
By September 2016,more than 130,000 acacia trees had been planted on 20 pilot farms, with farmers recording a 60 percent survival rate.Toumi estimates that some 3 million acacia trees are needed to protect Tunisia’s farmland. She expects to plant 1 million trees by 2018.In the next couple of years,Toumi hopes to extend the programme to Algeria and Morocco.

2.What is the main cause of the desertification of Tunisia’s farmland
A.Low rainfall. B.Soil pollution.
C.Cold weather. D.Forest damage.
3.Why did Toumi set up Acacias for All in Tunisia

In conversations with strangers, people commonly tend to think they should speak less than half the conversation time to be likable. But we’ve discovered this idea is wrong. Our data shows that people tend to think they should speak about 45% of the time to be likable in a one-on-one conversation with someone new. However,it appears speaking up a bit more is actually a better strategy.
In our research,we randomly assigned people to speak for 30%,40%,50%,60% of the time in a conversation with someone new.We found that the more they spoke, the more they were liked by their new partners. This was only one study with 116 participants, but the outcome is supported by other researchers’ findings. For example,a previous study randomly assigned one in a pair to take on the role of “speaker” and the other to take on the role of “listener”.After engaging in 12-minute interactions, listeners liked speakers more than speakers liked listeners because listeners felt more similar to speakers than speakers did to listeners. This outcome suggests the reason people prefer those who speak up:Learning more about a new partner can make you feel like you have more in common with him or her.
Further,we assigned people to speak for up to 70% and even 90% of the time. The result shows it is not an ideal strategy. Our research does not suggest people hold down a conversational partner but rather that they feel comfortable speaking up more than they usually might.
Research like ours can help people gain a more reasonable understanding of social interactions with new people and become more confident about how to make a good first impression. It has the obvious benefit of allowing us to carefully control speaking time. However,it does not reflect more natural conversations.Future research should figure out whether our findings generalize to more natural interactions.
5.What is the common belief concerning conversations with strangers
A.Speaking a little less is preferred.
B.Speaking half the time is the best.
C.Listeners are more likable than speakers.
D.Listeners fail to control the conversations.
6.How was the research carried out
A.By analyzing speaking habits.
B.By making comparisons.
C.By listing examples.
D.By collecting data.
7.What is the disadvantage of the research
A.The conversation time is limited.
B.Further study is hard to continue.
C.The findings are less widely applicable.
D.Interactions with strangers are missing.
8.In which situation can the research finding be applied
A.Attending a family gathering.
B.Partying with your friends.
C.Meeting a new teacher.
D.Making a public speech.题材2 职业与创新

There have been numerous attempts to create an all-plastic bike. But most have never passed through the prototype stage(原型机阶段).Igus,a Germany-based manufacturer of high-performance plastics, and Dutch start-up MTRL aim to change that with the igus:bike—the world’s first urban bike crafted almost entirely from recycled plastic.
Igus CEO Frank Blasé first got the idea while vacationing on a Florida beach in 2009.A conversation with some employees from a rental company made him aware of the challenges of maintaining beach bicycles. The continuous exposure to sand, wind and salt water caused the bikes to rust(生锈) rapidly. Many had to be replaced in only three months.
The igus:bike, unveiled at a German trade show,is maintainable and rust-free.It can be left outdoors in all weathers and does not require lubricant oil(润滑油) to reduce friction between parts.Since it does not attract sand, dust or dirt, the bike can be cleaned with a garden hose(水管) in seconds.
“As all components are made of plastic,no part of the bike rusts, even the gears—bicycle gears made of plastic were unthinkable for a long time,” Blasé says.
The igus:bike will also help combat the world’s plastic pollution. The company says a single adult bike gives new life to about 16 kilograms of single-use plastic that would otherwise choke our landfills or waterways.
Currently,90 percent of the igus:bike is made using recycled plastic. This includes the bicycle’s frame, bearings, pedals and wheel rims.Igus and MTRL believe future versions will be made entirely from recycled plastic.
“From ocean plastics to motion plastics—the igus:bike concept has what it takes to become a high-tech ecological product,” says MTRL co-founder Benjamin Alderse Baas.
The plastic bikes are expected to come onto the market in 2023.An adult model, made entirely from recycled plastic, will cost about ?1,400.A slightly cheaper version made using new plastic and an electric bike are also in the works.Igus also plans on sharing its technology with other bicycle manufacturers.

Aasritha Duriseti recently noticed her grandmother’s difficulty opening a bottle cap.Fortunately, she found a solution in her eighth-grade engineering class at Carson Middle School in Herndon,Virginia, whose assignment was to adapt existing products to make daily life easier for people with challenges.
Aasritha’s creativity kicked in as she researched existing bottle-opening devices. She used a piece of wood shaped like a cellphone and put three holes on it,each in different sizes and lined with a layer of dried, sticky hot glue, which provided firm grips(防滑力) for common bottle caps. With a simple twisting(拧) motion, her grandmother could open bottles without assistance.
“Students in the class used more than their math, physics and tool skills. They also learned to look at problems from another’s point of view,” said Teacher Mark Bolt.“Engineers need to put themselves in their product users’ shoes to build effective solutions.”
Other students in the class also showed sensitivity as they watched friends and family struggle with daily tasks.
Michael Kuwashima noticed how dyslexia—a reading disorder that the brain tends to confuse the order of numbers, letters and other images—made it difficult for a friend to follow along on pages full of text. Therefore,Michael created a small adjustable window-blind-style device.“My friend could isolate(分离) small sections of text while reading,” he said.
Arjan Garg focused on a different problem.Sometimes putting on clothes can be hard for people with a limited range of motion.Arjan created a “dressing stick” using four wood sticks of different sizes to fit different clothing.
The students tried different versions of their products along the way to make the best one to show the class.
Rather than requiring step-by-step directions for creating their projects,Bolt preferred to leave students’ creative paths open.“If we want to do better,we have to have a chance to fail,” he said.

Recently,Ian Worthington—the multi-talented animator/musician/voice actor known as Worthikids online—released the latest episode of his animated masterpiece,Bigtop Burger,on his YouTube channel.Bigtop Burger is a delightful little series about a food truck run by clowns(小丑).
Worthington’s animation blurs(模糊) the line between 2D and 3D.The voice cast, meanwhile,is clearly having fun with the material, their interactions giving the impression of a bunch of friends bouncing off one another naturally.Supporting that effect is the noticeable difference in certain characters’ microphone quality—lending the whole production a handmade, human feel that popular animation often lacks.
But Bigtop Burger isn’t just attractive production and no substance. What begins as an episodic series about the everyday lives of food truck employees putting up with an odd boss soon begins to point at a centuries-old conflict between clowns and the undead. The last but one episode of the first season introduces Zomburger,a rival(竞争的) food truck run by the larger-than-life Cesare, but only by listening to the original soundtrack could fans guess at what was to come.Season Two’s stories are developed in the order of time, and the latest episode,“Down”,goes all in on the supernatural description.Taking its title from the song that gives a hint(暗示),“Down” is where Cesare’s plans come to fruition, ending in a one-sided showdown with Steve,Bigtop Burger’s owner and certified “genuine clown”,whom he overpowers completely. It’s an especially rewarding moment for fans who picked up on the hints early.
If you aren’t watching Bigtop Burger, you should be.With each episode a mere few minutes long,it’s an easy series to consume in one sitting. There is no excuse not to watch it.Anyway,Bigtop Burger is without doubt one of the best animated series currently available on YouTube.Give it a look-see and you won’t be disappointed.
