Melati and Isabel deeply love their home on the island, surrounded by tropical rainforests, green fields, and a vast ocean.Enjoying a swim at their local beach was once a daily pleasure for them. But when Melati was fifteen, and Isabel just ten,the sisters started to lose their enthusiasm for swimming in the waters near their home.More often than not, plastic bags would be around them as they swam and some were scattered on the beach. They got really upset about that.
Melati didn’t think much about it until one day her teacher gave a lesson on some world heroes. Each of those people had sparked movements of positive changes in the world. They believed in the impact they could have and they did inspire more people to do something meaningful. After school,Melati walked home slowly in silence, concerned about the vast amount of plastic rubbish on the beach. The heroes crossed her mind.If they could do it,we could do it too,she thought. The idea lit her up.She couldn’t wait to share what she thought with Isabel and quickened her pace.
“So many plastic bags around! The beach is dirty and messy! It’s so terrible! We have lost the clean and beautiful beach. Can’t we do something to get it back?” Melati said heartily.Isabel felt a bit puzzled at what to do,but she also had a strong desire to do something.Picturing a beach as fascinating as before in mind, the pair jumped with joy.
They talked a lot, anxious to know how Dad and Mom would respond to their ideas. That night when the family sat by the dinner table, the sisters eagerly got their ideas across. While Mom and Dad listened to the girls carefully, their eyes shone.“How amazing that would be! We are so proud of you!” Dad exclaimed.Mom came up,gave them a thumbs-up and hugged the sisters.

Steve grabbed his bat and glove.“See you later,Mom.I’m going to Paul’s.” He raced out the door and slammed it behind him.Summer vacation just began. The boys planned to play baseball every day so they could make the freshman team.
Paul was waiting outside for Steve.“What are you doing Where’s your stuff?” Steve lifted his bat onto his shoulder when catching sight of Paul.
Paul shook his head unhappily.“I have to clean Mr Thompson’s garage before I can go.With his broken arm,he can’t do it himself. My mom always volunteers me to help the Thompson’s.They’re kind of old.”
“OK!” said Steve.“I’ll help you. We’ll get done quicker working together.”
The boys went down the block to the Thompson’s and got started. They found a couple of brooms and shovels(铲).Before they swept, they put boxes that were strewn(遍布) around the garage floor on shelves. As Paul put a big box on a shelf,it fell off and with it fell an envelope. He picked it up.It wasn’t sealed,so he opened it.There were lots of one-hundred-dollar bills.
“You’ve got to see this.” He pulled out a handful of bills and showed Steve with his eyes lit up.“Where did you get that?” said Steve.Paul pointed to the shelf.“It just fell down when the box fell. There’ve got to be several thousand dollars here.If we take some,I bet no one will ever know.”
Steve furrowed his brow(眉毛) and shook his head.“Are you crazy That’s stealing.” “Well,I do a lot of chores for them and don’t get paid. It’s not really stealing;it’s a kind of payment for my hard work,” Paul insisted. At that time,Steve was about to grab the money from Paul’s hand when they heard a sound.

Sandy and Jane came to see the jobo tree on the hilltop again.Jobos were their favorite fruit, but the tree belonged to a lady who lived in the house by the hill. They heard she was difficult, but that sometimes she would give fruit in return for an errand(差使).
The girls finally gathered their courage to knock on her door.An elderly woman with a fierce look answered, staring down at the girls.“We heard...”said Sandy, her voice shaky,“that you give jobos in payment for running an errand.”
The lady raised one eyebrow, then went into the kitchen and took two baskets. She pushed them into the girls’ hands.“Go fill these with jobos, and come right back.”
The girls raced up the hill to the tree and filled the baskets with the ripest jobos.Back at the house, the lady filled a bag with rice and handed it to Sandy.“Take this bag and one basket of jobos to the Brown family. And ask them for the payment,” the lady added with a tight smile.“If you return without the payment, you won’t get the fruit.”
The girls struggled all the way with the bag and the basket. When they were there,Mrs Brown answered the door.Inside on the floor were three little children, each painting something on papers.
Mr Brown was lying sick in bed.Times were hard.
The girls handed her the food.“This is from the lady with the jobo tree,” said Sandy.
“She asked for the payment, too.” Jane said awkwardly.
“The payment! The payment!” The children repeated, waving the paper in their hands happily.
Sandy and Jane looked at each other strangely. With a smile,Mrs Brown handed Sandy a large sealed(密封的) envelope so full that it was almost starting to break open. The girls said goodbye and left quickly.“I wonder,” Sandy murmured,“whether Mrs Brown can afford to pay for that food.”

When I found out that my new friend Karina did not share my opinions about some stuff,I was very upset. It was hard to imagine disagreeing with her about anything because when we first met,we got along so well.It was as if we’d known each other forever.
“No way!” I said,as I sat next to her on the first day of karate(空手道) camp.“Are those banana chips in your lunchbox?”
“You like banana chips?” she said in a surprised voice.“They’re my favorite snack.”
“My aunt brought some the last time she visited, and I’ve been craving(渴望) them ever since,” I said.
“I guess today’s your lucky day,” she said, handing me the bag.“We have a big box that’s kind of taking up space in the cupboard. So,you’d actually be helping me out!”
Right then is when I knew that Karina and I were meant to be friends forever.Whenever we got to pick a partner at camp,we picked each other.Whenever we had a break,we hung out together. The more time we spent together, the more we realized how amazingly alike we were.We both had two adorable cats,we both had an awesome younger sister, and we both had the same favorite song.
But then something happened.Karate camp was next to a piece of beautiful land that had a bunch of large old trees on it.Whenever it was nice out,we’d get to eat our lunch at picnic tables that were right by some of those trees.
After we finished lunch, our coach,Miguel, reminded us to keep the forest as clean and perfect as it was when we got here.
And that’s when things got complicated.
Sam,one of our teammates, asked us,“Have you guys heard that shopping mall rumor They want to cut down a bunch of those trees to make room for a shopping center.” To my surprise,Karina said,“My parents told me the shopping center would make new jobs for people who really needed work and people’s jobs were more important than trees.”

I turned to see all the other patients following me.A bit puzzled,I went to my car and slid into the driver’s seat. One of them called,“Pop your hood!” So I pressed the button.Several others bent forward, most probably leaning into check the engine.“The screw is loose.” One assured me,“Trust me.I used to be a mechanic.”Having fetched the tool from his car,he began to twist it.It was not long before he straightened up to rest, rubbing his back.Unexpectedly, the other patients just volunteered to take his turn despite their own health condition. When the “mechanic” gave a thumbs-up,everyone called out together,“Try it now!”
I said a quick prayer and turned the key.The engine turned over immediately.A cheer went up.Several hands shut the hood.“Don’t make any stops on the way home,” the “mechanic” said.“Keep the car running till the battery gets a good charge.” I backed my car out of the space, and then paused to wave at the crowd of people who’d saved the day.My Honda never stalled again. It turns out that my waiting room team had done a better job than my garage ever did.I guess that’s just what happens when people come together. And there’s no better Valentine than that.

Immediately, the class became excited. Some could hardly wait to tell us about their holiday trips, eyes shining and faces glowing with joy. Those who hadn’t been anywhere bombarded them with inquiries.Enormous joy welled up in every corner of the classroom.Obviously confused about the sudden noisy situation,Mark turned to me for explanations in written words.Surprisingly,my explanation put a smile on his face.“Any volunteer to share your story?” asked Ms Green, whose words I set down on paper for Mark.
Then Mark rose from his chair and walked onto the platform.Greeting us with a confident smile,Mark shared his story in a magnetic voice, which left me stunned.I felt more ashamed to learn that he ran a website to help children with hearing problems than guilty about stupidly thinking disabled people couldn’t be intelligent. Then his voice was drowned out by a thunderous outburst of applause.Having a lump in my throat,I clapped my hands even more loudly, determined never to judge a book by its cover.

“So,what is in the bag?” Debbie asked loudly with a smile. Her question was the last straw to break me down.Face blushing red,I dumped the bag on the table and grumbled in a choking voice,“Nothing, just my coat, books, papers and pens. Why you all tease my bag which brought me a whole year of bad luck and loneliness?” No longer able to contain my emotion,I buried my head in my arm and let tears of grievance wash over my face.
Then Debbie started to laugh, not at me,but at the situation.Debbie told me every stitch of the bag was made of my mother’s selfless love. When being laughed at,I should let them stop.Meanwhile,I should open myself up and make friends proactively so that I could better fit in.Debbie’s gentle words, like a shining torch, dispelled all the darkness in my life.Through my misty eyes,I knew I would take her advice and embrace my new life with my bag.

I wanted this to be a teachable moment for Luke to learn about forgiveness.I wanted to let go of my own anger, too.I asked Luke if he was ready to forgive her. After all,his opinion counted the most.He thought about it for a moment, smiled and said,“Yes.” He knew she hadn’t done it on purpose.Children are so resilient and so honest. They don’t hold onto resentment as adults do sometimes.Their hearts are pure,so we wrote Katie a letter together, reading,“We know it was an unfortunate accident. We forgive you,and we hope you forgive yourself.”
The next morning,Luke and I waited for Katie with the letter at the school gate. Finally came Katie. When she spotted us,she paused and forced a smile.Luke ran beside her with wild little hops, handing her the letter. No sooner had she unfolded it than a relieved and happy smile bloomed on her face, which made Luke feel much better. She skipped to give me a big hug.I hugged her back.We didn’t have to say anything else;we all knew it was forgiveness that was the most important step in healing.

Melati and Isabel decided to make a positive impact straight away. They took advantage of their spare time to pick up rubbish on the beach. However,it was soon that they realized that they couldn’t solve the problem on their own for there was so much plastic. After discussions and preparations, they started an organization to spread their idea among the youth, involving more youths in the movement, which proved to be a hit.More and more teenagers took part.In a month, they altogether collected and recycled 2.5 tons of plastic, recovering the beautiful beach.
One month later,Melati received a call from the local newspaper. The two girls were invited to an interview in which they were asked what inspired them to start the organization, what the biggest challenges are and what advice they have for young people who want to make changes in this world. They said a team is what keeps them going on the challenging days and added,“Keeping our team engaged and motivated has been a challenge and we are happy to have a positive influence.” Melati and Isabel are heroes who make a big difference to our world.

“Boys,I baked a chocolate cake,” Mrs Thompson walked into the garage.Catching sight of Mrs Thompson, the two froze with fear and followed her step with racing hearts.A few minutes later, they were served with large slices of cake.Delicious as the cake was, they didn’t have any appetite.Mrs Thompson seemed to notice something was wrong,“Boys,do you like the cake?” Paul nodded with his eyes dropping to avoid any eye contact and growing guilt crept into his heart.
When they were about to leave,Mrs Thompson handed Paul a brand new bat and glove.Paul looked at them, his face blushing with shame.“Th...thanks so much.” Voice trembling,Paul then bravely poured out everything about the envelope and gave back the money he hid before, apologizing for his stealing. However,Mrs Thompson, instead of boiling with anger, came up to Paul, and said gently,“Oh,thank you for helping me find the envelope.I totally forgot where I had put it.” In that split time,it dawned on him that what really matters is simple honesty and simple kindness.

Worried, the two girls discussed what was in the envelope as they walked back.Tapping her chin,Sandy murmured,“If it’s money, that’s a great deal! If it’s not, what could it be?” Jane, lost in thought, didn’t reply at once. She placed her palms on the envelope, reflected on the family and suddenly she claimed,“Paintings! It must be the girls’ paintings!”After she explained to Sandy, they arrived at the old lady’s.Awkwardly,Jane handed the lady the envelope with trembling hands.
The lady opened the envelope, took out a pile of papers, and smiled. On the papers were colorful drawings from the children. At this scene,Sandy and Jane looked at each other and smiled. Then, the girls gained their payment—a full basket of ripe jobos. For them,it turned out that their errand not only gained them their favorite fruit, but also a sweet taste of getting payment by their hard work. When they took a bite, the juice was as sweet as the feeling inside their heart.

I completely disagreed with Karina about cutting down trees.Since trees were home to hundreds of small animals,I couldn’t believe that Karina could be such a cruel person who wanted to replace the lively forest with a noisy shopping mall.Overwhelmed by anger and confusion,I shouted at Karina,“How dare you wish to destroy such a wonderful forest?” Shocked by my mean words,Karina stared at me in horror and failed to say a word. After a while,Karina broke the silence, telling me the story of her parents.
Later,I suddenly realized Karina had her reasons for believing what she did.Her parents had suffered from unemployment for a long time and could hardly support the family,so she understood the importance of jobs deeply.“But I just want to save our wonderful land,” I explained in a low voice, feeling sorry and guilty.Gently patting me on the shoulder,Karina comforted me,“That’s fine.” It suddenly dawned on me that a friend was not the same person as me,but a person who accepted me.I smiled at Karina, and invited her to hang out, after which our laughter soon lingered in the beautiful land again.强化练(三十九) 读后续写(2)

The homemade book bag was placed across my bed.It appeared to have taken over the entire room.I knew that my mom had spent all day happily sewing as she pictured me proudly walking from class to class with it over my shoulder. The next day I was to start seventh grade at a new school,in a new state,in the middle of the school year.I was nervous and excited.
That first day at school I heard the whispers.“Have you seen the new girl? She’s from California.Did you see that big bag?” Then there were giggles(咯咯笑).
Because I started school in the middle of the year, all of the lockers had been assigned to other kids. There was no extra locker available for me,so I was forced to carry all my stuff around in the oversized bag.Wild stories flew back and forth about what I kept in the bag that never left my side.Drugs? Some kids wondered.Clothes? Is she homeless
There was nothing interesting in that bag, just my coat during cold weather, school books, papers and pens.Eventually, most students pretty much ignored me,but some of the kids made fun of my bag.People grabbed at it,pretended to treat it like a dog and tried to drop litter into it.My teachers didn’t seem to notice, probably because I didn’t ever complain or ask for help.As the year progressed,I started to hate that bag.I blamed all my problems on it.I felt helpless, alone and homesick for California and my old friends.
One day toward the end of the school year,my math teacher assigned each student a partner to work with on word problems.I was told to work with Debbie,a popular girl who was in several of my classes. She smiled and waved me over toward her desk,so I grabbed my bag and quietly moved toward her.As I sat down,I realized that I had never spoken to her before.

I looked around the crowded waiting room at the hospital and sighed.Would the doctor be able to see my eight-year-old son next I couldn’t stop shaking as the wound in his forehead was deep.We were at the hospital because another child had thrown a rock at Luke during the break as he was running around the corner.
Luke received four stitches(缝针).I fought back the urge to cry.For the next two days, his eye was swollen shut and black and blue.I felt like I’d had a mini nervous breakdown.Every time I tried to sleep or tended to do some housework, horrible thoughts crept into my mind. What if he’d lost his eye What if he’d had brain damage His doctor assured me he was going to be fine, but the what-ifs kept coming.Fear had taken over, and then the fear turned to anger.I was angry with the child who’d thrown the rock.I just couldn’t shake it.What was she thinking She should have known better.
Several days later,Luke’s teacher called me that evening to see how he was feeling, telling me Katie felt terrible and heartbroken over what had happened.I asked the teacher to make Katie understand she couldn’t do that and remind her of the dangers of throwing rocks. The teacher agreed, which made me feel better.
I noticed that as Luke started to heal physically,I wasn’t as angry.I thought about Katie and Luke.I wanted to stand up for my son, protect him,but I didn’t want to mistreat Katie because I learned from the teacher Katie really was a nice kid and that she was just trying to remove the rock so no other children would trip on it.
Last night,Luke’s teacher stopped by and dropped off a get-well card that Katie had made.Luke and I read it several times, and I couldn’t help but feel a little choked up.It was a sincere apology.

I looked around at the other patients waiting to see the doctor.Maybe they all had more romantic plans for the evening on this Valentine’s Day,but for now the group seemed anti-social.Three people had their heads down, staring at cellphones.Another was absorbed in a magazine. The receptionist tapped at her computer.Everyone was in their own little world.
But I couldn’t judge them for it.I would probably be buried in my cellphone too—if I hadn’t forgotten to charge it before I left home.It would have been nice to strike up a conversation to pass the time on this day,a day of love and friendship.Instead I sat patiently in my plastic chair as a couple of new people took distant seats.
“Roberta The doctor’s ready for you,” the nurse called.“At least I’ll have some kind of human connection,” I thought.
My checkup went well, and I breezed out of the office to my little Honda in a space right out front.I got in and turned the key.Nothing.Oh,no.Not again.I’d sent the car to the garage several times already for this very problem and thought it had finally been fixed.
I reached for my cellphone to call AAA—then remembered. It was dead, like my car.I would have to use the phone inside.A few people glanced up when I came back into the waiting room, and then quickly went back to what they were doing.I went straight to the reception desk, but the receptionist was not there. So I turned back to the people in the waiting room.
“I wouldn’t normally do this,” I said to the group, hoping that I sounded apologetic.Several people turned toward me to listen.“But my car won’t start...”
The nurse popped her head into the room.“You in trouble,Roberta?” she said.“I’ll go and take a look.” I followed the nurse outside. As I passed through the door,I felt someone was behind me.

It was the first day of our new grade.Everyone in the classroom was chatting happily, excited to see each other again after the long holidays. When the door slid open, all of us stopped talking and turned to look.In came our teacher Ms Green, followed by an ordinary-looking boy.
“This boy’s name is Mark,” Ms Green announced.“He comes from another school, and he’s going to be in our class from today.Make sure all of you welcome him warmly.”
The class clapped. But I didn’t want to.I had a second look at the newcomer, for he had no outstanding qualities, considering his small figure and casual T-shirt.
“Oh,I forgot to mention one thing,” Ms Green spoke up.“Mark actually has hearing problems.Normally he would have hearing aids on,but his old ones have just been broken. His doctor suggested that he stay at home until he got his new ones. However,Mark insisted on attending his first day of school. So if you want to communicate with him,you have to write your words on a piece of paper.”
This single speech sent the whole class into noises. Some students looked at each other with expressions of surprise.Others voiced cries of concern out of pity.
Ms Green calmed everyone down.“I’d like someone to personally help him out throughout the day.Do I have any volunteers?”
“How can a disabled person be intelligent?” I thought to myself.I refused to raise my hand, expecting someone else would. But nobody did or said anything.Dead silence spread across the classroom.
It was by total bad luck that my eyes happened to meet Ms Green’s.
“How about you,James?” she asked me.“Is it okay for you to take care of Mark just for today?”
It is difficult to refuse a request by someone, especially if that person is a teacher.I sighed(叹气)and nodded slightly.
Ms Green gestured for Mark to sit beside me and then asked us to share our holiday stories with the class.
