When Leon Martin asked for his parents’ advice on how to become a UX designer (设计师), they both went silent. “In fact, I had no idea what he was talking about,” said Anne, his mother. “I don’t know whether he was talking about designing clothes, computer programs or a fancy brand of bike.”
Even when her 18-year-old son explained that it was something about “behind the scenes” online design, his mother was still a bit lost. “I felt like I had totally failed as a parent,” she said. “My job as a parent is to open doors so my children can achieve their potential (潜力), but now can I do that when I don’t even understand what their dreams are ”

More than 75% of parents feel it is almost impossible to offer their children good advice in such a fast-changing job market.
Michelle Rea did a survey of over 2,000 parents of secondary school students in England. She found that many parents were afraid their children hardly follow them. “We all know that parents’ opinions and suggestions play an important role in shaping and influencing their children’s career dreams,” she said. “But we usually depend much on our own experiences. And things have changed so much since most of us were at school.”
Bryony Mathew, writer of the Awesome Career Books, said the world was changing so rapidly that parents should not try to decide on certain careers for their children.

Some children cannot wait to grow up. Because once you become an adult, you are free to make your own decisions. More importantly, you can do all those things that you cannot do now because you are too young. So, the question is, “At what age do you really become an adult ” Well, people become adults at different ages in different places.
In Australia, the 18th birthday is a very important event for young Australians because it means they can do almost anything they want. They can vote, learn to drive a car, get married, join the army and even buy their own houses. However, even if they can do all these things, most Australians have to wait until their 21st birthday to really celebrate becoming an adult. This is the traditional adult age not only in Australia, but also in the USA and the UK. It is their first year of true independence. Traditionally, people were given a key to their houses by their parents when they turned 21, meaning they could come and go as they like.
Even though 21 is the traditional adult age in many English-speaking countries, the law nowadays is different in each country. In the UK, you can join the army at 16 and even get married at 16 if your parents agree. Young people in the UK can learn to drive a car at 17, although they have to wait until they are 18 to vote.
In China, there is a different age for each of the stages of becoming an adult. You can vote and learn to drive a car when you are 18, but if you want to get married, women have to wait until they are 20 and men until they are 22. Chinese people celebrate important birthdays every 10 years—so when young people turn 20, they can expect a big party!
No matter what age you are, becoming an adult is really about learning how to be independent and responsible. Once you are finally able to take care of yourself and make your own decisions, then you can say that you are truly a grown-up.
34.Which of the following are truly adults according to the passage
A.Independent grown-ups. B.Married people.
C.People who can drive. D.People in the army.
35.What is the writer's opinion about the age when people become adults
A.It depends on whether they can vote or not.
B.It depends on their own independence and responsibility.
C.It depends on if they are eighteen years old.
D.It depends on when they get the key to their houses.
36.People in Australia get the key to their houses when they really become adults .
A.because the law decides it
B.so that they can welcome their friends whenever they want
C.so that they can have big parties in their houses
D.because it is a tradition
37.Which of the following is the best title for this passage
A.Independent Grown-ups B.Kids and Adults in Different Countries
C.What Makes One a Real Adult D.Cannot Wait to Grow Up
D
Nobody wants to lose, but we must accept that losing is a part of life. After all, we can't win all the time. However, we can learn something valuable from every failure(失败). This may help us succeed in the future. So we must know how to be a good loser.
We must not be afraid of losing. When we lose, just take it with a smile and look on the bright side of it. Failure can't be avoided in our life. Edison failed 10,000 times before he invented the light bulb (灯泡). When he was asked how he felt, he said that he hadn't failed 10,000 times but had learned 10,000 things which didn't work. We must know that history is full of examples of men and women who achieved success although they failed many times.
Losing is not very disgraceful. We must accept our failure and learn to take advantage of it. Remember that it can be helpful. Take action to walk out of it. When we lose, think about what we did and how we can improve. If someone else can help, we'll be lucky enough. Maybe he or she has been through the same experience before. Many people enjoy helping others solve problems. This can save us a lot of time in learning how to avoid the same mistakes in the future.
We should face our failure when we lose. There is only one winner in every competition. Some win, while some lose. That is a usual way of life. If we offer our congratulations (祝贺) to the winners and share in their happiness, we won't feel sorry for our failure.
In a word, being a good loser will help us to succeed in life. It might be painful at the beginning, but there are many advantages. Good losers set examples to us, and most importantly, they finally win.
38.In the writer's eyes, why did Edison achieve success
A.He got help from others. B.He happened to make it.
C.He avoided possible mistakes. D.He saw the bright side of losing.
39.What does the underlined word “disgraceful” probably mean
A.Bad. B.Personal. C.Dangerous. D.Interesting.
49.What does the writer advise the losers to do in a competition
A.Express the regrets. B.Forget the failure.
C.Share in the winners' enjoyment. D.Join in another competition.

Sometimes it’s the best way to keep in touch with (与……保持联系) family and friends. Sure, we’ve got things like WhatsApp, Facebook, and iMessage to stay in touch. But there’s nothing like a physical postcard that you can hold in your hand. It has a lot more meaning when it’s a physical object — one that you have to touch. ____43____
____44___ They help to create connections to places in a personal way. When you receive a postcard from a place you’ve never been — with a personal note from a friend… it’s hard not to want to share that same experience.
Most importantly, almost anything can be a postcard. No joke: ____45____ I was living in New England and wanted to show a friend back home what the autumn colors were like. So I found a red-orange leaf, and sent it off. I wasn’t sure it’d make it through the post, but it did!

“My job as a parent is to open doors so my children can achieve their potential (潜力), but now can I do that when I don’t even understand what their dreams are ”
_________ Research has found that more than 2/3 of parents in England are now facing the problem that, when their children express interest in new education and job choices, they may know nothing about them.

A.Independent grown-ups. B.Married people.

由第二段倒数第二句中“he said that he hadn't failed 10,000 times but had learned 10,000 things which didn't work”可知,在作者眼中,爱迪生取得成功是因为他看到失败积极的一面。
由画线词后两句“We must accept our failure and learn to take advantage of it. Remember that it can be helpful.” 故选A。
由第四段最后一句“If we offer our congratulations to the winners and share in their happiness, we won't feel sorry for our failure.”
I don’t actually remember the first postcard I ever received, or even the first time I sent one. ____41____ Or was it from my aunt who always seemed to be in faraway places I don’t know. But I do know there are enough reasons for sending a postcard.
Postcards don’t take up any space. You’re traveling around the green hills of Scotland or crossing Texas on a road trip and you don’t want to carry much, right ____42___ They’re light. They fit everywhere: between pages, in your camera bag, inside your computer case (箱), and so on.
A. The power of the object is stronger and we remember it longer.
B. Postcards are small and easy to carry.
C. I once sent a nice autumn leaf as a postcard.
D. Was it from one of my father’s work trips
E. Postcards also encourage us to travel more.
41.空前“I don’t actually remember the first postcard I ever received, or even the first time I sent one.(我不记得我收到 第一张明信片是什么时候,甚至不记得我第一次寄明信片是什么时候。)”说明作者已经不记得收到的第一张明信片是什么时候,空后“Or was it from my aunt who always seemed to be in faraway places (还是我那似乎总是在很远地方的姨妈寄来的?)”是作者的一个猜测,空格处应该也是一个猜测,句式上应该和空后的句子相似,D选项“Was it from one of my father’s work trips (是我父亲出差时寄来的吗?)”
42.空前“You’re traveling around the green hills of Scotland or crossing Texas on a road trip and you don’t want to carry much, right (你在苏格兰的绿色山丘上旅行,或者在公路旅行中穿越德克萨斯州,你不想带太多东西,对吧?)”
43.空前“It has a lot more meaning when it’s a physical object — one that you have to touch.(当它是一个物品时,它有更多的意义——一个你必须触摸的对象。)”说明的是明信片是能摸得着的,空格处继续对这个特征进行描述,A选项“The power of the object is stronger and we remember it longer.(这个物品的力量更强,我们记住它的时间更长。)”
44.空格处是本段主题句,由空后的“They help to create connections to places in a personal way. When you receive a postcard from a place you’ve never been — with a personal note from a friend… it’s hard not to want to share that same experience.(它们有助于以一种个人的方式建立与地方的联系。当你收到一张从你从未去过的地方寄来的明信片——附有朋友的私人留言——你很难不去分享同样的经历。)”可知,收到明信片会让我们想要去朋友去过的地方旅游,也就是明信片鼓励我们更多地去旅游,E选项“Postcards also encourage us to travel more.(明信片也鼓励我们去更多的旅行。)”说明明信片鼓励我们更多地旅行,概括了本段内容,可作为主题句,故选E。
45.空前说“Most importantly, almost anything can be a postcard. No joke:(最重要的是,几乎任何东西都可以成为明信片。没有开玩笑:)”任何东西都可以成为明信片,空格处作者应该举自己的实际例子来说明真的是什么东西都可以作为明信片,C选项“I once sent a nice autumn leaf as a postcard.(我曾经寄过一张漂亮的秋叶作为明信片。)”举的是作者自己把秋叶当明信片的实际例子,承接上文,引出下文“So I found a red-orange leaf, and sent it off. I wasn’t sure it’d make it through the post, but it did!(所以我找到了一片红橙色的叶子,然后把它送了出去。我不确定它能不能通过邮件,但它确实通过了!)”具体讲用秋叶做明信片的举动,符合语境,故选C。

四、语篇填词 (首字母填空) (每题1分,共5分)
根据下列篇章的意思及所给首字母写出所缺单词。在填写答案时,要求写出完整的单词。(每空限填一词)
Nature is wonderful. It is our best teacher. It teaches us a lot and we are born to learn from it to solve p 46 . For example, scientists used what they saw in nature to improve our way of travelling. In days of high-speed train research and development, scientists were once faced with a noise problem. The trains pushed air through tunnels at h 47 speeds. So, when a train came out of a tunnel, it could be very, very noise. However, kingfisher birds hardly make a sound when they get into lakes or rivers. Engineers got a clever idea. They changed the front of the trains to match the shape of the kingfisher. Then the air could e 48 pass over the trains. The problem was solved!
The kingfisher birds’ example is just one that we learned from nature. Scientists study the smart models that nature can o 49 . Then they use their wisdom(智慧)and imagination to design new products. Nature provides us with e 50 possibilities to find wonderful ways to improve our lives. Learning from nature knows no bounds(永无止境)!
