When you are about to go to a boarding school in England, there are many different questions that may come to mind. But once you look at them with some perspective, you will certainly feel easy. Here is a normal boarding day.
Early Morning:
Usually boarders get up around 7: 00 am and have around an hour to take a shower and put on their uniform before breakfast.

Lunch is usually held around 12: 30 pm at the dining hall, where you’ll join your friends to enjoy a hot dish. After an hour of lunch, you’ll have three or four more lessons to attend.
Dinner:
At 5: 00 pm you will have finished your school lessons for the day. Most boarding schools in the UK offer their full boarders different kinds of hot meals to choose from.
Activities/ Sports:
All boarding schools in the UK provide many different kinds of activities for their boarders, such as football, swimming, golf or art.
Prep:

Once you are done with all your classes and activities, it’s time to relax.
Bedtime:

James Warren was walking in his Denver neighborhood when something gave him pause. “A woman was waiting for the bus, sitting in the dirt. And I was like, ’ Oh man, that’s terrible. ’ That’s not dignified at all. We need to be doing better by our fellow city members,” Warren told a reporter. “And so, I thought, ‘I could do something about that, and I could build a bench.’” That moment led him on a mission to help his community.
Warren found some scrap wood ( 废木料), thanks to construction sites in his neighborhood with piles of discarded wood. And, because his dad builds houses, he grew up around tools-he knew he had the basic skills needed to build a bench.
He built one at the beginning of the year and put it back at that bus stop where he first got the idea. Since then, he’s built eight custom benches and has placed them at bus stops around the area.
Each bench looks different, since he’s using scrap wood for all of them. Each one takes a few hours to build, and Warren hand-delivers them to bus stops without sitting areas. While each bench is unique, Warren makes sure to carve the same message on all of them: “Be Kind.”
“Sometimes it can feel really difficult to make a change in the world around us. But the truth is, anyone can be kind and make a difference in the world. And that difference matters a lot,” he said.
He’s heard from many people in the community — those who use the benches and those who have been inspired by them. “What’s been really cool is seeing other people online building their own benches or even just taking chairs they were going to throw out and putting them by bus stops instead of letting them go to landfill,” Warren said.
Warren said he hopes the benches continue to inspire-and perhaps expand to other cities. 24 .What made James Warren build benches
A .The woman’s seeking help from him.
B .His father’s teaching him to build houses.
C .Finding other people building benches.
D .Seeing a woman sitting on the ground.

C .We should dream big but do small. D .Having some skills is of importance. 27 .How did people in the community react to James Warren’s move
A .They voiced their doubt. B .They showed their support.

The Global Food Donation Policy Atlas has issued a recent report in order to recommend ways to increase food donations, reduce food waste, and fight hunger, which may help Kenyan leaders meet 2030 food waste reduction goals.
Food donation can reroute eatable food—that would otherwise give off greenhouse gasses in a landfill—to those experiencing hunger. According to the Famine Early Warning Systems Network, 3.5 million Kenyans, roughly 37 percent of the population, face severe hunger. At the same time, the Policy Atlas reports roughly 40 percent of food produced within Kenya goes to waste. But Broad Leib, Deputy Director of Harvard Law School Food Law and Policy Clinic (FLPC), sees some promising changes. “While progress is not happening as quickly as needed, Kenya’s food loss index has been steadily reduced from 1,744 metric tons in 2017, to 1,531 in 2018, to 1,446 metric tons in 2019, indicating a steady improvement and national commitment to food loss reduction,” reports Broad Leib.
According to the Policy Atlas, motivating food donation with rewards is particularly important, which helps food donors and food recovery organizations make up for costs necessary for recovery, storing, processing, and transporting food for donation.
“A major driver of food waste is inconsistent or unclear date labels that cause confusion among all actors along the value chain and limit the ability of businesses to donate food. This increases the likelihood that much safe food will go to waste,” Broad Leib tells Food Tank. However, he acknowledges Kenya’s current dual (双的) date labeling laws. While food may lose its freshness over time, it is still eatable before expiration (到期). Dual date labeling on packaged foods reduces bewilderment by defining dates for both safety and quality. This helps reduce considerable waste and responsibility for donors.
Broad Leib believes that the private sector can also play a significant role in decreasing food waste in Kenya. It is vital for consumer education campaigns. FLPC’s research shows that public-private initiatives can help raise awareness among consumers and donors around issues of food waste and food donation.
28 .What changes does Broad Leib see
A .People in Kenya no longer suffer hunger.
B .Kenya has gradually reduced its food waste.
C .Kenya is not committed to reducing food loss.
D .Progress in reducing food waste is happening quickly.
29 .How can Kenya reduce food waste according to Broad Leib
A .By increasing storehouses.
B .By fighting hunger with rewards.
C .By reducing food produced within the country.
D .By using double date labeling on packaged food.
30 .What does the underlined word “bewilderment” mean in Paragraph 4
A .Sadness. B .Convenience. C .Confusion. D .Emotion.
31 .What can we learn from the last paragraph
A .Consumer education campaigns are the most important.
B .Only the private sector is helpful in reducing food waste.
C .Private and public joint efforts matter around food issues.
D .Broad Leib doesn’t agree with FLPC on food waste reduction.

For the first time, scientists have grown plants in the moon soil collected by NASA’s Apollo astronauts. The scientists had no idea if anything would grow in the moon dirt. They wanted to see
if it could be used to grow food by the next generation of moon explorers. The results surprised them. Plants actually can grow in lunar (月球的) soil.
The researchers planted thale cress (芥蓝), a small flowering plant, in moon soil returned from the Apollo missions. The good news was that all of the seeds grew. The bad news was that after the first week the lunar soil stressed the plants so much that they grew slowly. Most of the moon plants ended up stunted—meaning small or not fully developed.
The longer the soil was exposed to radiation and solar wind on the moon, the worse the plants seemed to do. The soil collected by the Apollo 11 mission was the least helpful for growth. It was exposed a couple billion years longer to the elements.
Scientists said, “This is a big step forward to know that we can grow plants. The real next step is to go and do it on the surface of the moon.”
Moon dirt is full of glass particles from micrometeorite ( 微小陨石) impacts. One solution might be to use younger geologic spots on the moon, like lava flows, for digging up soil. The environment also could be changed by adding special nutrient mixtures or artificial lighting.
Only 382 kilograms of moon rocks and soil were brought back by the six Apollo crews that landed on the moon. Most of them are still locked away, forcing researchers to experiment with soil made of volcanic ash on Earth.
Early last year NASA finally gave out 12 grams of soil to the University of Florida researchers for the planting experiment. NASA said the timing for such an experiment was finally right with the space agency looking to put astronauts back on the moon in a few years.
32 .What is the result of the planting experiment with lunar soil
A .The plants couldn’t grow normally. B .It was difficult for the seeds to grow.
C .They were struck by some diseases. D.The soil was too stressed for the plants to grow. 33 .What is the final purpose of this experiment
A .To create a new crop. B .To improve lunar soil.
C .To plant on the moon. D .To find the right amount of light.
34 .Why did the scientists use volcanic ash for testing
A .Lunar soil cannot be brought back by humans.
B .Lunar soil was difficult to obtain for testing.
C .Lunar soil is not suitable for planting.
D .Lunar soil is the same as volcanic ash.
35 .Which of the following can be the best title for the text
A .Future Astronauts Will Grow Food on the Moon
B .It’s Time to Study Growing Crops on the Moon
C .Lunar Soil Consists of Tiny Glass Particles
D .Scientists Grow Plants in Dirt from the Moon

My knees started shaking, yet my body froze. It felt as though my soul left my body and I had no control over it. Anxiously, I looked through the announcement posted on the wall of the locker room; my heart was beating harder and harder as I slowly saw all my friends' names on that list but could not find mine. I just couldn't accept that all my friends were on the team but I was not.
I was so convinced there was a mistake that I went and found the coach. But the coach just said, "There is always next year.” I could feel the hot, bitter tears building in my eyes, and I ran out of the room as fast as I could. As soon as I walked out, I saw my friends crowding into the locker room to look at the finalized team list. I heard them shouting and laughing as I slowly walked away, every one of them jumping around with excitement after seeing that they made the team. I felt dead inside, like nothing mattered.
After school, as I walked to the parking lot to get picked up, I saw all my friends gathered near the lot, celebrating and joking around. I detoured(绕行)around the side of the school to avoid them, trying not to think about being the only one in my friend group not to make the team.
I saw my father's familiar red Mazda pull up near the school lot, and I walked up to the car and got in. He smiled at me, turned on the radio, and started driving home. Then when we got home, he noticed my heavy steps and long face, and asked me what was wrong.
"Nothing. Well, it's just that all my friends made the school team. Everyone! Except me!" I said, not knowing how he would react.
“Well, what are you going to do about it Are you just going to sit there and wait "he asked. 注意:1.续写词数应为 150 左右;
Surprised, I didn't know what to say, and I just shook my head and went into my room.

W: I read a story in a book the other day. It showed something important and I wanted
to share it with you. The story was set in the years before cars were invented, so the rich had to
travel in coaches. One day, a young lady wanted to watch a play in the theater. Her coachman took
her to the theater in a coach. It was very cold. While she was watching the play, the poor
coachman had to sit outside in the snow on the driver’s seat of the coach looking after the horse. Inside the theater, the lady was moved to tears by the performance. Some actors in the play were in extremely poor situations. She showed great pity on them. However, when she came out and
saw the coachman covered with snow and almost frozen to death, she just considered it as a
normal part of life. Nowadays, whenever I see people in terrible situations on TV, I feel sad,
wishing that I could do something to make a difference. But I often ignore people and things
around me, like people who struggle with life. They lose their jobs, experience death in their
family or suffer diseases. Help those as you can. This is the story. Is there anyone who can share
something you read during the holidays in class

根据首段中的““A woman was waiting for the bus, sitting in the dirt. And I was like,’ Oh man, that’s terrible.’ That’s not dignified at all. We need to be doing better by our fellow city members,” Warren told a reporter.(“ 一个女人坐在泥土里等公共汽车。我当时想,‘ 天哪, 这太糟糕了。 “那一点也不体面。我们需要通过我们的城市成员做得更好, ” Warren 告诉记 者。)”可知,Warren 发现一位女士坐在地上等公交车,他认为通过城市成员可以做的更好, 结合下文中的“And so, I thought, ‘I could do something about that, and I could build a bench.’(所 以,我想,‘我可以做点什么,我可以做一个长凳。 ’)”可知,Warren 想自己可以做点什么, 于是有了做一个长凳的想法,由此可知, 看到一位女士坐在地上使得 James Warren 有了制
作长凳的想法。 故选 D 项。
25 .细节理解题。根据第二段中的“Warren found some scrap wood (废木料), thanks to
construction sites in his neighborhood with piles of discarded wood.(沃伦发现了一些废木材,这 要归功于他附近的建筑工地堆满了废弃木材。)”
故选 A 项。
Sometimes it can feel really difficult to make a change in the world
around us. But the truth is, anyone can be kind and make a difference in the world. And that
difference matters a lot,” he said.(“有时候,改变我们周围的世界真的很难。
James
故选 A 项。
根据倒数第二段中的“He’s heard from many people in the community — those who use the benches and those who have been inspired by them.

根据第二段 Broad Leib 报道的“ While progress is not happening as quickly as
needed, Kenya’s food loss index has been steadily reduced from 1,744 metric tons in 2017, to
1,531 in 2018, to 1,446 metric tons in 2019, indicating a steady improvement and national
commitment to food loss reduction.
根据第四段“Dual date labeling on packaged foods reduces bewilderment by defining dates for both safety and quality. This helps reduce considerable waste and responsibility for donors. (包装食品上的双重日期标签通过明确安全和质量日期来减少困惑。这有助于减少 大量浪费,对捐助者负责)”可知 Broad Lib 认为使用双日期标签能减少肯尼亚的食物浪费。
故选 D。
30.词义猜测题。由第四段“A major driver of food waste is inconsistent or unclear date labels that
cause confusion among all actors along the value chain and limit the ability of businesses to
donate food.
A. Sadness.悲伤; B. Convenience.便利; C.
Confusion. 困惑; D. Emotion. 故选 C。
FLPC’s research shows that public-private initiatives can help
raise awareness among consumers and donors around issues of food waste and food donation.

that after the first week the lunar soil stressed the plants so much that they grew slowly. Most of
the moon plants ended up stunted—meaning small or not fully developed.(好消息是所有的种子 都长大了。
故选 A 项。
For the first time, scientists have grown plants in the moon soil collected by NASA’s Apollo astronauts. The scientists had no idea if anything would grow in the
moon dirt. They wanted to see if it could be used to grow food by the next generation of moon
Scientists said, “This is a big step forward to know that we can grow
plants. The real next step is to go and do it on the surface of the moon.”(科学家们说: “这是一个 很大的进步,我们知道我们可以种植植物。
Only 382 kilograms of moon rocks and soil were brought back
by the six Apollo erews that landed on the moon. Most of them are still locked away, forcing
researchers to experiment with soil made of volcanic ash on Earth.(“阿波罗”号的 6 艘飞船只带 回了 382 公斤的月球岩石和土壤。
For the first time, scientists have grown plants in the moon soil collected by NASA’s Apollo astronauts. The scientists had no idea if anything would grow in the
moon dirt. They wanted to see if it could be used to grow food by the next generation of moon
explorers. The results surprised them. Plants actually can grow in lunar DScientists Grow Plants in Dirt from
the Moon(科学家在月球的泥土中种植植物)”是本文最好的标题。 故选 D 项。
