Some time ago, in my class I was about to fail a student for his answer to a physics question when the student claimed he deserved a better score. The examination question sounded “safe”, “Show how it is possible to determine the height of a tall building with the aid of a barometer (气压表).” The student had answered, “Take the barometer to the top of the building, attach a long rope to it, lower the barometer to the street, and then bring it up, measuring the length of the rope. The length of the rope is the height of the building.”
I argued that a high grade should prove his competence in physics, but the answer did not confirm this. I suggested that the student have another try. Immediately, he worked out his answer: A second best way is to take the barometer to the top of the building. Drop the barometer, timing its fall with a stopwatch. Then, using the formula to calculate the height of the building.
I was shocked by his answer. His method gave me not only a broken barometer but a U turn in my teaching philosophy. I gave him full marks.
On his leaving my office, I recalled that he suggested there could be a better answer. So I asked him what it was. “Oh, yes,” said the student. “There are many ways. Probably the best,” he said, “is to take the barometer to the basement and ask the superintendent (大楼的管理人). You speak to him as follows, ‘Mr. Superintendent, here I have a fine barometer. If you tell me the height of this building, I will give it to you.’”
At this point, I asked the student if he really did not know the conventional (常规的) answer to this question. He admitted that he did, but said that he was fed up with high school instructors’ trying to teach him how to think, and how to use the so called “scientific method”. He just wanted to solve the problem in a practical manner, not just answer the question in an expected way. Hearing this, I really had nothing to do but give the boy a firm handshake, feeling thankful that I hadn’t failed him in the first place and even more thankful that neither had he.
4. Why did the author want to fail the student in the first place
A. The student challenged his authority.
B. The student’s answer was not practical.
C. The student didn’t show his academic ability.
D. The student had a poor performance in physics class.
5. According to the text, which answer is not mentioned in the passage
A. B.
C. D.
6. Which of the following can best describe the author’s new teaching philosophy
A. Without love, there is no education.
B. A man becomes learned by asking questions.
C. Teaching is to make two ideas grow where only one grew before.
D. You can lead your horse to the river, but you can’t make it drink.
7. What made the student give up the conventional answer
A. Lack of physics related knowledge.
B. Ignorance of the teacher’s expectation.
C. Intention to deeply impress his teacher.
D. Disapproval of existing teaching concepts.
C 5. B 6. C 7. D

So far this winter, a theater in the Alps has staged more than 60 unique concerts. Winter temperatures in the remote mountain village can drop high below zero. Performers wear down jackets and play ice instruments. In fact, almost everything from drums and guitars to horns and harps at the music festival is carved from ice even the stage the musicians play on. The audience sits on ice chairs and benches and claps their hands to listen, both to praise the performers and to keep themselves warm when the air flows through.
The musical instruments used were almost entirely made by an American ice artist, Tim Linhart. Since he created his first musical instrument out of ice more than a decade ago, he has already carved various ice instruments, including violins, violas, timber drum sets, xylophone, double bass, mandolin and cello. He also created his own large wind instrument, which uses the vibration of an ice tube to produce sound when the air flows through.
Linhart makes the different parts of the ice instrument and then uses a liquid mixed with snow to glue them together, with a metal support placed where the strings need to be. A violin can usually be made in two or three weeks, while larger instruments can take more time and efforts, sometimes taking months to make.
An ice instrument has a clearer sound than a wooden instrument. However, ice instruments are more easily broken or damaged than ordinary instruments. The temperature in the ice theater changes depending on the number of people in the audience. This also changes the temperature of the ice instruments, which in turn affects the 1 sound they produce. Musicians need to tune their instruments frequently during performances.
Although playing an ice instrument is not easy, Linhart believes that ice and snow are good materials for making instruments. The only downside is melting when the temperature is above freezing.
8. What is special about the music festival
A. It attracts only the locals. B. It usually lasts two months.
C. It has to be held in the cold. D. Its audience have to dress up.
9. What does the underlined word “vibration” in Paragraph 2 probably mean
A. Temperature. B. Shaking. C. Length. D. Opening.
10. What does Paragraph 4 mainly tell us about ice instruments
A. Strengths and weaknesses. B. Production methods.
C. Specific materials. D. Different varieties.
11. What is the purpose of the text
A. To promote an idea. B. To explain a theory.
C. To share an event. D. To introduce a finding.
C 9. B 10. A 11. C

根据划线词上文“He also created his own large wind instrument, which uses the vibration of an ice tube to produce sound when the air flows through.(他还创造了自己的大型管乐器,当空气流过时,它利用冰管的vibration产生声音)”可知,which引导的非限制性定语从句修饰先行词wind instrument,结合常识,乐器发声需要利用冰管的振动在空气流过时发出声音。
根据第四段“An ice instrument has a clearer sound than a wooden instrument. However, ice instruments are more easily broken or damaged than ordinary instruments. The success of many North American crops partly depends on ground beetles, small insects that eat pests and weed seeds that could otherwise damage crops. But a new study by researchers in the US and Canada suggests not all of the nearly 2,000 species of ground beetles found in North America will survive climate change. Some could decline. And that could have a far-reaching impact on agriculture, forestry, and conservation.
By studying the data on 136 different ground beetle species across continental North America, Puerto Rico and Hawaii, the researchers found that a species’ chance of success in a changing climate depends on several important factors, such as its habitat preference, body size, and whether it flies, climbs or runs.
“We found that less mobile, nonflying ground beetles, which are critical pest control agents, are more likely to decline over time in a warmer, dryer climate,” said Tong Qiu, who led the study. “That means you’re going to have more pests that can impact agricultural and forest ecosystems.” But there is reason for hope, Qiu added, because the analysis also showed that habitat conservation can lessen these effects and reverse the trends in some areas.
“We hope conservation biologists will use this information and the online map that we created to better manage habitats for insects in general. Ground beetles are very beneficial to ecosystems, but they’re largely invisible to the average person. In this paper we’re showing the broad impacts they have on whole communities in forested and agricultural ecosystems,” said Qiu.
The researchers used ground beetle count data from the National Science Foundation’s National Ecological Observatory Network (NEON) and from 11previously published studies to measure and map the beetles’ distribution across North America. Habitat information, such as the location of gaps in forest canopies and the density of plants on a forest floor, was obtained by using NEON’s imaging instruments to create detailed thr e-dimensional images of landscapes. They then entered the data collected into a computer model to simulate (模拟) climate changes to study how the insects would respond.
12. What does the new study in North America show
A. Pests could des troy many North American crops.
B. Some ground beetles will not survive a climate change.
C. The survival of ground beetles only depends on its habitat.
D. Some ground beetles will destroy crops in a warmer climate.
13. What does Tong Qiu intend to convey in paragraphs 3 and 4
A. There is no way to stop the decline of ground beetles.
B. Critical pests are more adaptable in a warmer, drier climate.
C. Ground beetles will become less mobile in a warmer climate.
D. The importance of ground beetles should be widely recognized.
14. How did the research team carry out the study
A. By analyzing data.
B. By assessing statistics.
C. By doing field research.
D By studying documents.
15. What is the best title for the passage
A. North American Agriculture Crops at Risk
B. Crop-saving Beetles under Climate Threat
C. A Catastrophic Climate Change on the Way
D. Beetles’ Reaction to simulate Climate Changes
B 13. D 14. A 15. B

根据第一段中“But a new study by researchers in the US and Canada suggests not all of the nearly 2,000 species of ground beetles found in North America will survive climate change. Some could decline. (但美国和加拿大研究人员的一项新研究表明,在北美发现的近2000种地面甲虫并不是都能在气候变化中生存下来。一些可能会减少)”可知,北美的这项新研究表明,一些地面甲虫将无法在气候变化中生存。故选B项。
【13题详解】
推理判断题。根据第三段““We found that less mobile, nonflying ground beetles, which are critical pest control agents, are more likely to decline over time in a warmer, dryer climate,” said Tong Qiu, who led the study. “That means you’re going to have more pests that can impact agricultural and forest ecosystems.” But there is reason for hope, Qiu added, because the analysis also showed that habitat conservation can lessen these effects and reverse the trends in some areas.(负责该研究的佟邱说:‘我们发现,在温暖干燥的气候中,作为关键害虫防治剂的流动性较低、不活动的地甲虫更有可能随着时间的推移而减少。”。“这意味着会有更多的害虫影响农业和森林生态系统。”但邱补充道,有理由抱有希望,因为分析还表明,栖息地保护可以减轻这些影响,并扭转某些地区的趋势)”以及第四段““We hope conservation biologists will use this information and the online map that we created to better manage habitats for insects in general. Ground beetles are very beneficial to ecosystems, but they’re largely invisible to the average person. In this paper we’re showing the broad impacts they have on whole communities in forested and agricultural ecosystems,” said Qiu.(邱说:‘我们希望保护生物学家能够利用这些信息和我们创建的在线地图,更好地管理昆虫的栖息地。

Handwritten thank-you letters are such a simple way of making other people feel good, it is strange that so few people write them anymore. At work, a thank-you letter to employees is unbelievably effective. It costs little and has no side effects. The effort involved in writing letters very low. The pleasure on receiving them is very high. ___16___
Doug Conant, manager of Campbell’s Soup Company since 2001, knows the power of thank you letters. He said that every day he works with an assistant, searching the company for people deserving thanks. ___17___ Over the past 10 years he has sent 30, 000 thank-you letters to his employees — more than 10 each day. The reward is huge: his company has remained one of the most successful in its field for years.
___18___ There seem to be three reasons. Firstly, chief executives (主管) running companies think their own work is more valuable than that of others. ___19___ Secondly, they aren’t close enough to the business to know who deserves thanks. Thirdly, they have forgotten the strange human truth that almost everyone would do almost anything in return for a few words of appreciation.
In these days of such busy schedules and people running all over the place and trying to get ahead, sometimes we forget the simplest things in life are the most powerful and rewarding. You need to think to yourself about a time someone sent you a thank-you and how much it meant to you. ___20___
A. He then writes them a thank-you letter.
B. Why are thank-you letters so important
C. You may ask what side effects exactly mean.
D. This makes them an excellent way to reward and motivate staff.
E. But if these letters are so inspiring, why don’t more managers write them
F. Always remember to “Do to others whatever you would like them to do to you!”
G. Since no one ever writes them thank-you letters they don’t write any themselves.
D 17. A 18. E 19. G 20. F
根据前文“The effort involved in writing letters very low. The pleasure on receiving them is very high.(写信所费的功夫很低。收到礼物的快乐是非常高的。)”可知,该部分的主题应是手写感谢信,因此设空句应承接前文进行总结。选项D“This makes them an excellent way to reward and motivate staff.(这使它们成为奖励和激励员工的绝佳方式。)”
前文“He said that every day he works with an assistant, searching the company for people deserving thanks.(他说,他每天和助手一起在公司里寻找值得感谢的人。)” A“He then writes them a thank-you letter.(然后他会给他们写一封感谢信。)” 故选A项。
根据后文“There seem to be three reasons.(似乎有三个原因。)” E“But if these letters are so inspiring, why don’t more managers write them (但如果这些信如此鼓舞人心,为什么没有更多的经理来写呢 )”为“为什么”句,与后文在语境语意上衔接紧密,且句中“But”与前文构成转折关系,符合语境分析。
前文“Firstly, chief executives running companies think their own work is more valuable than that of others.(首先,运营公司的首席执行官认为自己的工作比别人的更有价值。)” G“Since no one ever writes them thank-you letters they don’t write any themselves.(因为没人给他们写过感谢信,所以他们自己也不写感谢信了。)”
根据前文“You need to think to yourself about a time someone sent you a thank-you and how much it meant to you.(你需要想想有一次有人给你发了一封感谢信,这对你来说有多重要。)” F“Always remember to ‘Do to others whatever you would like them to do to you!’(永远记住“你希望别人怎么对你,你就怎么对别人!”)”

C. Specific materials. D. Different varieties.
11. What is the purpose of the text
A. To promote an idea. B. To explain a theory.
C. To share an event. D. To introduce a finding.

D. By studying documents.
15. What is the best title for the passage
A. North American Agriculture Crops at Risk
B. Crop-saving Beetles under Climate Threat
C. A Catastrophic Climate Change on the Way
D. Beetles’ Reaction to simulate Climate Changes
