Paul Durietz is a 76-year-old social studies teacher from Illinois, the United States. On September 1, he set a
Guinness World Record for the world’s longest teaching career. Mr. Durietz has been teaching for 53 years —
since he was 23 years old.
When he was just 11, Mr. Durietz says, he made up his mind to be a social studies teacher. Social studies is
the study of history, and how people, countries, and cultures are connected. He became interested in history after
hearing stories from his father, who fought in World War II.
Mr. Durietz got his first teaching job at Woodland Middle School in Gurnee, Illinois in 1970. Ever since then,
he’s been teaching social studies at the same school. He says he loves sharing his knowledge of history with
students. “Teaching is never boring,” he says. “Every day is different.”
Things have changed a lot since Mr. Durietz first began teaching. When he started, he wrote on a blackboard
with chalk, and the students used paper textbooks. These days, he and the students use computers and digital
whiteboards. Despite this, Mr. Durietz says the students are still pretty much the same — except that now they
have cell phones.
With or without technology, Mr. Durietz has used creative activities to help his students learn. For example,
he has organized virtual field trips, geography contests, and special days about the US Civil War. He has even
organized elections at school to help his students learn about politics.
Mr. Durietz wasn’t really trying to set a record. But his family, friends, and the people he works with
encouraged him to apply to Guinness to see if he’d set a record. He had. Now he still has no plans to retire any
time soon. “Keep working on what I love to do in life,” he says.

Ten years ago, The Make-A-Wish Foundation paid a visit to
5-year-old Miles Scott living in San Francisco, who was
diagnosed (诊断) with leukemia just over 1 year old and battled
it from then on. Leukemia is the most common type of
childhood cancer that kills a large number of children every year.
Fortunately, Scott successfully went through treatment to give
himself the best possible chance. But those precious years of
childhood could not come back. That’s why Make-A-Wish came
and tried to bring some magic back to his life.
When asked what his dream was, Scott shyly said it was to
be Batman. The Foundation stepped up to make it happen. “It’s
probably one of our most challenging wishes,” said Jen Wilson,
marketing manager for Make-A-Wish Greater Bay Area, in 2013. “It’s very unusual. It’s one that’s taken several
months to plan and countless people to get involved in, from volunteers who play the roles of the bad guys to
those who provide services of all kinds. We’ve had a big interest in helping with this wish.”
Finally, the day came when San Francisco was transformed into Gotham City (where Batman lives) and in
need of a super hero, and Scott took on the role of “Batkid.” In this amazing project, Make-A-Wish and the city of
San Francisco created a real-life adventure for Scott to complete, including fighting bad guys, saving citizens, and
earning the key to the city from the mayor himself. Thousands of people went to San Francisco to watch this event
and countless people offered to help out and bring it to life, including a local major newspaper The San Francisco
Chronicle publishing a special “Gotham City Chronicle” newspaper for the day.
Years after saving Gotham City, Batkid Scott is now 15. He plays baseball for his high school and enjoys
living his cancer-free life, looking forward to other adventures in his future.

C. To show magic tricks to him. D. To invite him to act as Batkid.
19. What “best possible chance” did Scott get according to paragraph 1
A. Recovering from Leukemia. B. Having a carefree childhood.
C. Getting Make-A-Wish’s help. D. Playing the role of a hero.
20. What can we learn from Jen Wilson’s words
A. It was the most difficult project he carried out.

A recent study from psychologist Sarah Kucker at Oklahoma State University suggests shyness can influence
a child’s performance in language tests, depending on the level of social interaction (互动交流 ) required to
complete the test.
Shy children tend to keep quiet in everyday life, including communicating with others. The study points out
that the behavior can make judging a child’s language abilities more challenging since shy children find it harder
to verbally engage with testers (that’s when children are required to speak out) than during less socially
demanding tests.
The research by Sarah Kucker was published in the Journal of Speech, Language, and Hearing Research, and
involved 122 children between the ages of 17 and 42 months. Each child underwent a series of three language
tasks that required different levels of social interaction: a looking task, a pointing task, and a verbal task. In each,
the children were asked to find a known object from a set of pictures. Parents reported their child’s shyness in an
early childhood behavior survey.
The results showed significant differences in children’s performance across the tasks depending on shyness.
Shyer children did worse in the verbal task than the less-shy children of the same age. However, all children
performed well in the pointing task independent of their shyness level. The looking task produced more
complicated results, meaning that shyer children were occasionally more accurate (精确的 ) but less likely to
respond.
“A child’s shyness could strongly impact how they will behave in language tasks,” said Kucker. “When
children are given language ability tests, testers should take into account the child’s shyness level, perhaps using
tasks that are less socially demanding for them, such as pointing tasks instead of verbal ones.”
Kucker believes recognizing the impact of shyness will help to ensure language tests are more effective and
provide a better understanding of a child’s language development.
22. What does the underlined word “verbally” in paragraph 2 probably mean
A. In written forms. B. With chosen pictures.
C. In spoken words. D. With hand gestures.
23. What do we know about the research according to the text
A. The children took one of three language tests.
B. The children were asked to speak in each test.
C. Shyer children did worse in most of the tests.
D. Shyer children did well in less interactive tests.
24. Which of the following may Kucker agree with
A. Language test results are not accurate.
B. The level of language tests is too high.
C. The child’s shyness level is to be tested.
D. It’s unnecessary to take a language test.

Milk plays an important role in a child’s healthy growth, from a breastfed (母乳喂养的) baby to a teenager
putting milk into a drink. 26 .
Cow’s milk is naturally rich in protein (蛋白质 ) and calcium (钙 ). It also contains vitamin D, which is
strengthened during the process of milk production. 27 . Since these are important for kids’ growth and

foods, if they are also rich in protein, calcium and vitamin A and D, can help satisfy what kids’ body development
needs, too. However, it doesn’t mean that milk can be completely replaced unless kids are breastfed. 29 .
The point is that, in addition to milk, kids also need to eat some other foods that are rich in a variety of
nutrients (营养). 30 , but also make sure that the body system works fine. It’s wise to take milk, but we’d
better make the diet diverse.
A. Cow’s milk can strengthen bones and teeth
B. You’ll need to offer other foods that your kid loves
C. Though milk is so beneficial, it’s not the only choice for kids
D. It provides a lot that kids need to support growth and development
E. In a similar way, vitamin A is added into milk, especially non-fat milk
F. Different foods not only support the body development in different ways
