The traditional Chinese lunar calendar(农历) divides the year into 24 solar terms(节气). Start of Winter, the 19th solar term of the year, begins this year on Nov 7 and ends on Nov 21.
Start of Winter is the first solar term of winter, which means winter is coming and crops harvested in autumn should he stored up.
In ancient times, the Start of Winter was regarded as the beginning of winter, however, due to geographical factors, the actual winter time varies from place to place.
In fact, the Start of Winter is not the beginning of winter in terms of meteorology(气象学). The weather every year is different, so the beginning of winter could be quite different. And as China is very large, it starts at different times in different areas.
The beginnings of the four seasons were important festivals in ancient times. Before the Start of Winter, the ancient emperor would take a shower and have no more meat. On that day, the emperor would lead his officials to the countryside and "welcome the winter".
People eat dumplings on the beginning of winter. Legend has it that in the late Eastern Han Dynasty, Zhang Zhongjing invented "Jiao Ear" (娇耳) to treat typhoid(伤寒) patients with ear frostbite(冻疮). He cooked mutton, hot peppers and herbs to drive out the cold and warm up the body. He put these materials into a dough skin and made them into an ear shape. Since then, people have learned to make the food which became known as "dumpling" or jiaozi. Today there is still a saying that goes "Eat dumplings on Start of Winter Day, or your ears will be frostbitten."

A. It is one of the solar terms in Chinese calendar.
B. People begin to harvest crops on this day.
C. Winter begins on November 7 this year.
D. It begins in different months in different places.
17. What does it in paragraph 4 refer to

18. What do the last two paragraphs mainly talk about
A. Importance of Start of Winter.
B. Customs of Start of Winter.
C. Origin(起源) of Start of Winter.
D. Food eaten on Start of Winter.
19. Why do people eat dumplings on Start of Winter day
A. Because dumplings can drive away typhoid.
B. Because they wish for good luck for themselves.
C. Because eating dumplings can warm up their ears.
D. Because they want to prevent the coming of winter.

A new study suggests that long periods in space can cause the human heart to shrink(缩小). The study—by a team of American researchers—comes as the U.S. makes plans to build a long-term base on the moon and prepares to send astronauts to Mars.
Part of the study was based on the experiences of the retired astronaut Scott Kelly. The U. S. space agency NASA says that during his career, Kelly spent more time in space than any other American astronaut. One of Kelly's stays aboard the International Space Station(ISS) lasted 340 days. Researchers from the University of Texas Southwestern Medical Center(UT Southwestern) in Dallas collected and analyzed the physical data during Kelly's long stay aboard the ISS. The goal was to learn the effects of weightlessness on heart health and performance. The team found that during Kelly's stay in space, the left ventricle(心室) of his heart shrank about 0.74 grams per week.
Dr. Benjamin Levine is a professor at UT Southwestern. He was the leader of the research. In a statement, he explained that because of the conditions in space, the heart does not have to work as hard to pump(输送) blood uphill from the feet. Over time, this can cause shrinkage. In an effort to keep their hearts and bodies healthy in space, astronauts are required to perform different kinds of exercises throughout their stay.
Reductions in heart size are also seen in patients who spend long periods in bed because they are lying flat and the heart does not have to work as hard to pump. A second part of the study examined data from a long-distance swimmer who spent nearly a year trying to cross the Pacific Ocean. The swimmer, Benoit Lecomte, was chosen because he swam more than 2,800 kilometers over 159days. Levine says long-distance swimming has similar effects on weightlessness. The study showed that during Lecomte's swim, his left heart ventricle shrank about 0.72 grams per week.
20. How did the researchers carry out their study
A. By interviewing astronauts.
B. By examining collected information.
C. By experimenting aboard the ISS.
D. By comparing people in different fields.
21. What are astronauts asked to do to keep their hearts fit in space
A. Do various exercises.B. Get regular blood tests.
C. Stay in space for less time.D. Stand on their heads sometimes.
22. Who is least likely to suffer from a shrunk heart according to the text
A. A patient spending a long time in bed.
B. An astronaut traveling in space for long.
C. A long-distance professional swimmer.
D. A well-trained marathon runner.
23. What can be the best title for the text
A. New Ways to Fight Heart Diseases
B. The U.S. Builds a Medical Center in Space
C. Long Space Flights Can Shrink the Heart
D. Long-distance Swimming Keeps Your Heart Fit

China is recognized as a world leader in the development of artificial intelligence and facial recognition systems. A Chinese company says it has created a new facial recognition system that can identify people even if they are wearing masks (口罩). Engineers at the Beijing-based company say their system is the first to be created to effectively identify people wearing face masks.
The company told a news agency that a team of 20 people built the system in about a month. Tho system is based on existing technologies developed over the past 10 years. The process involved adding a collection of about 6 million unmasked faces and a much smaller collection of masked faces, the company said.
The company is now selling two main kinds of products that use the new technology. One performs "single channel" recognition, which is designed to be used at the entrances to buildings. The other product is a "multi-channel" recognition system that uses groups of surveillance (监视) cameras. It can identify individuals in a crowd of up to 30 people within a second.

If you land in India anytime in late February or March, it’s wise to check the dates of the annual Holi Festival and bring a spare set of clothes. That’s because for a few days in spring, people crowd the streets and pelt(向……投掷) anyone walking by with brightly-colored powder to celebrate the arrival of spring and the end of evil. It’s hard to avoid the fun and the paint, unless you stay inside or look angry enough to discourage the custom.
“Watch out, madam!” said my taxi driver in Amritsar as we drove through a crowd of young people pelting each other with powder. “The colors never come out of your clothes,” he said. “And you might be having purple hair for many days.”
I did a quick check. I was wearing black, a color rarely seen in India. It is usually connected with the lowest social classes, and can be viewed as unlucky. I was happy for my clothes to be painted in colors.
“I have some powder I bought for my children. You can have some gladly, to join in our customs,” he encouraged me. Holding what the driver handed me as my weapon of choice, I walked into the Holi smoke. At first people politely avoided foreigners. But then a girl in a sari(莎丽) ran up smiling and put paint on my face. I returned the favor with a handful of pink.
With its brilliant clothes, exotic flowers, trucks covered with lights and brightly painted pictures of gods, India is truly one of the most colorful places on the planet!

The cultures of the East and the West are really different from each other a lot. This is because the culture systems are two separate ones on the whole.
The origin of the Eastern culture is mainly from two countries: China and India. Both of the two cultures were developed by rivers—the Yellow River in China and the Indus River in India. They helped the two cultures develop for centuries and form their own styles.
When the two mother rivers gave birth to the Eastern culture, another famous culture was up on the Mesopotamian Plain—the Mesopotamian Civilization. This civilization later on developed into the cultures of Ancient Greece and Ancient Rome. And these two are well known as the base of the European culture. Like the Chinese culture, the European culture also crossed waters. When the British settled down in America, their culture went with them over the Atlantic Ocean. So the American culture doesn’t have much difference from the European culture.
At the same time, some other differences add to the cultural differences. Take the language system for example. In the East, most languages belong to the pictographic (象形文字的) language while the Western languages are mostly based on the Latin system. Other causes like human race differences count as well. But what’s more, due to the far distance and the steep areas between the East and the West, the two cultures seldom communicated until recent centuries. So they grew up totally in their own ways with almost no interference from the other.
The differences are everywhere. They are obvious and make people’s ways of thinking and their views of the world different. But different cultures make the world of the 21st century more colorful. The cultural differences should not be the obstacle (障碍) to the civilization of human being. It ought to be the driving force of our going farther.

How much sleep do we need It’s a fundamental question about a basic human function we’ve been practicing for a long time, but there’s still no simple answer. But whether you’re a morning or evening person could be guided by your genes. That is, your sleeping pattern will change naturally with age, which is also reflected in the recommendations of the National Sleep Foundation: it suggests 14—17 hours of shuteye a day for newborn babies and only 7—8 hours for over-65-year-olds.
But scientists said it was about more than simple duration. Teens and people in their early 20s do want to go to bed later and get up later too. Something might have to do with changing hormones(荷尔蒙). “On average, there’s about a two-hour difference in preferred sleep times between people in their late teens or early twenties and people in their late 50s or early 60s,” he said. “So asking a teenager to get up at 7 o’clock in the morning is the equivalent of asking a 55-year-old to get up at five in the morning.”
At the end of the day, the best way to measure how much sleep you need is to listen to your own body. Do you rely on an alarm clock to wake up Does it take a long time to feel awake Are you dependent on coffee drinks to keep you focused during the day Are you overly impulsive(易冲动的) or do you find yourself running a lot of traffic lights, for instance All these could be signs that you’re not getting enough sleep.
And that, we know today, is bad. The environment can affect your sleep preferences but your genes stay. Scientists said that the understanding of the importance of sleep was “one of the great achievements of modern neuroscience(神经科学),” and that society was moving from the all-nighter culture to respecting the need for sleep.
8.What can we infer from Paragraph 1
A.A newborn baby sleeps more hours than an old person.
B.There is no solution to calculating our sleeping hours.
C.Our sleeping pattern is invariable.
D.Our genes are irrelevant to our sleep.
9.What’s the writer’s intention of writing the passage
A.To report his research results.
B.To express the importance of sleep.
C.To list some sleeping patterns.
D.To persuade people to have enough sleep.
10.What does the underlined word “that” in the last paragraph refer to
A.Not getting enough sleep.
B.Listening to your own body.
C.Running a lot of traffic lights.
D.Not understanding of the importance of sleep.
11.Which is the best title for the passage
A.Sleeping Patterns
B.The Importance of Sleep

The most popular martial arts (武术)today came from Asia, especially China. Some Chinese fighting styles were invented more than 3,000 years ago. Many martial arts were invented because people needed to defend themselves or protect others. Nowadays, people learn martial arts as a way of keeping fit or as a competitive sport, but they are still very useful for self-defence.
Martial arts are often referred to as being either soft or hard. These terms imply a way of dealing with your opponent’s (对手的)force. Soft martial arts, such as t’ai chi, teach you to use your opponent’s own force to defend yourself. Soft styles use movements and timing to avoid, deflect and redirect the opponent’s attacks. These martial arts are soft for the defender but not for the attacker! On the other hand, hard styles, such as kung fu, teach you to defend yourself by using force. Techniques involve blocks, postures and powerful punches and kicks. Hard martial art techniques will be more effective(有效的)if you are more skillful, more powerful and faster than your opponent.
Perhaps one of the best known Japanese martial arts today is karate. But do you know that it came from Fujian Province A community of Chinese migrants(移民)from Fujian settled in what was then the kingdom of Okinawa. The Chinese migrants used to gather in a park to enjoy cultural activities—one of which was kung fu. This soon caught the attention of local youths, who started learning kung fu from their Chinese neighbours.
In fact, Chinese influence on martial arts was not only kung fu. The very first Korean military training manual was based on a Chinese version. During the Japanese invasion (侵略)of Korea in the 16th century, the Korean army needed an effective way to train a large number of soldiers. They used a training methodology from a Chinese military manual called Ji Xiao Xin Shu, written by the famous Chinese general, Qi Jiguang, who had defeated the Japanese army himself.
12.What does the second paragraph mainly talk about
A.Soft martial arts.
B.Hard martial arts.

13.Which place is the home of karate
A.Japan.

Food preservation
Local cuisines often depend on how people traditionally prepare food for storage. In warm weather, meat and fish can go off quickly, so they must be cooked right away or preserved for later. 18 . For that reason, modern Norwegian cuisines include many smoked foods.
  Cooking techniques
19 . In China, people often fry food in a deep metal pan or steam it in a basket over hot water. In Morocco, people cook traditional dishes in a special pot called tagine. And some local dishes aren’t cooked at all.
  Imported (进口的) ingredients
Sometimes local cuisines include ingredients that originally came from another place. 20 , while many Russian dishes are made of potatoes. However, all of these ingredients were brought to Europe from South America in the fifteenth and sixteenth centuries. But now they are common around the world.
A.Seafood is often a key ingredient in coastal areas
B.There is a danger that local food traditions will be lost

阅读下面材料,根据其内容和所给段落开头语续写两段,使之构成一篇完整的短文。续写的词数应为150词左右。
Peter woke up early in the morning. He went downstairs in a hurry and started to have his breakfast as quickly as possible.
“Why are you in such a hurry, early bird ”Mum asked him. “We will have an English spelling test today, Mum,” Peter said. “Mr. White promised to offer prizes to those who get a score of 100. I’ve been studying the word list since last week. Although the words are difficult, I am well prepared for them.”
Peter reviewed the spelling of each word once more carefully when Dad drove him to school. At last,it was time for the students to have a test. “Responsibility,” Mr. White started. Peter wrote it on his test paper quickly and confidently.
“The second word: contribution,” Mr. White said.
“So easy,” Peter thought. He quickly wrote the word down.
Thirty words later, the test papers were collected by Mr.White.“I am to mark your papers now,” he told the class. After marking the test papers, Mr. White said, “Three of you win a prize today for excellent test scores. Peter, David and Mary get 100 percent in the spelling test!”
Mr. White praised them. Meanwhile, he gave the three students each a dictionary. Peter’s was an English-Chinese dictionary—the one he liked best. Peter was so excited that he held it high when his classmates cheered. “This is my happiest moment,” Peter thought.
After Mr. White gave the test paper back, Peter had a look at the words, feeling proud of his spelling. All of a sudden, the word “contribution” confused him. It didn’t seem right. Peter began to compare them after taking out the word list. “C-o-n-t-r-i-b-u-s-i-o-n,” he whispered. He had spelled it wrong.
“What am I to do ” Peter said to himself. “I expect my classmates to think I’m a master in spelling. If I tell Mr. White one of my spelling words is wrong I’ll have to give my prize back, or I will become an example of telling a lie.”
Staring at the red sign “100%” which was written on his test paper, Peter was lost in thought. After a while, he remembered a lesson Mum used to teach him, “We ought to be an honest person.”

Slowly, Peter raised his hand.

Dear Tom,
It is nice to receive your e-mail. Now I’d like to tell you something about the Palace Museum.
The Palace Museum, also referred to as the Forbidden City,is a fascinating tourist attraction. It dates back to the Ming Dynasty. It took nearly 14 years to build and was completed in 1420. As the largest museum in China, the Palace Museum holds precious treasures which have a history of thousands of years. It’s not surprising that its temples and palaces amount to 9,999 because nine is traditionally considered as a lucky number by Chinese people. Middle school students from all over our country now can visit it free of charge every Tuesday.
I do hope you can come to China and take a look at this museum with your own eyes. I’m sure you are more than likely to be attracted.
Best wishes.
Yours,
Li Hua

One possible version:
Paragraph 1:
Slowly, Peter raised his hand. “Mr. White, I didn’t get 100 percent in the test. I made a mistake in a word.” He stood up and handed his teacher the dictionary he liked best and his test paper. “I spelled ‘contribution’ with ‘s-i’ instead of ‘t-i’.” Peter could feel his classmates looking at him with surprise as he walked back to his desk. Mr. White held up Peter’s test paper. “Class,” he said, “Peter did something even more important than spelling every word correctly in a test.” Mr. White smiled at Peter. “He taught us a lesson on being honest.”
Paragraph 2:
Peter looked around. He found many of his classmates smiling at him. “Peter, I want you to have this dictionary because you set a good example to all of us,” Mr. White said. Peter took the dictionary from his teacher and expressed his thanks to Mr. White. Meanwhile he couldn’t wait to show it to Mum and tell her one of his best days ever.Unit 4 History and Traditions
