Today almost everyone knows computers and the Internet. If I ask you what is the most important in your life, maybe you will say computers and the Internet.
The first computer was made in 1946. It was very big but it worked slowly. Today computers are getting smaller and smaller. But they work faster and faster. What can computers do A writer has said, "People can't live without computers today."
The Internet came a little later than computers. It is about twenty-five years later than computers. But now it can be found almost everywhere. We can use it to read books, write letters, do shopping, play games or make friends.
Many students like the Internet very much. They often surf the Internet as soon as they are free. They make friends on the Internet and maybe they have never seen these friends. They don't know their real names, ages, and even sex(性别). They are so interested in making the "unreal friends" that they can't put their hearts into study. Many of them can't catch up with others on many subjects because of that.
We can use computers and the Internet to learn more about the world. But at the same time, we should remember that not all the things can be done by computers and the Internet.
1.The Internet can not be used for _______.
A.studying B.shopping
C.thinking D.playing
2.When the first computer was invented, it was _______.
A.large and worked quickly
B.small and worked slowly
C.large but worked slowly
D.small but worked quickly
3.The Internet was born in about _______.
A.1960 B.1970
C.1980 D.1985
4.What does the writer think of the Internet
A.It is terrible.
B.It can make students study harder.

D.It is helpful, but we can't do everything on it.
七选五
根据短文内容,从短文后的七个选项中选出能填入空白处的最佳选项。选项中有两项为多余选项。
Perhaps you’ve heard the old saying “curiosity killed the cat.” It’s a phrase that’s often used to warn people—especially children—not to ask too many questions. ____1____In fact, research has shown that curiosity is just as important as intelligence in determining how well students do in school.
Curiosity can also lead us to make unexpected discoveries, bring excitement into our lives, and open up new possibilities.____2____For example, one day in 1831, Michael Faraday was playing around with a coil(线圈) and a magnet(磁铁) when he suddenly saw how he could produce an electrical current. At first, it wasn’t clear what use this would have, but it actually made electricity available for use in technology, and so changed the world.
____3____On one level, this is because technology has become so advanced that many of us are unable to think too deeply about how exactly things work anymore. While it may be possible for a curious teenager to take a toaster apart and get some sense of how it works, how much do you understand about what happens when you type a website address into a browser Where does your grasp of technology end and the magic begin for you
In addition to this, there’s the fact that we all now connect so deeply with technology, particularly with our phones. The more we stare at our screens, the less we talk to other people directly. ____4____Then we feel we know enough about a person not to need to engage further with them.
The final—and perhaps most worrying—way in which technology stops us from asking more has to do with algorithms, the processes followed by computers. As we increasingly get our news via social media, algorithms find out what we like and push more of the same back to us. ____5____ Perhaps the real key to developing curiosity in the 21st century, then, is to rely less on the tech tools of our age.
A.It is still not known why learning gives us such pleasure.
B.We are always encouraged to challenge our pre-existing beliefs.
C.Yet it’s widely agreed that curiosity actually makes learning more effective.
D.All too often we accept the images of people that social media provides us with.
E.However, curiosity is currently under the biggest threat, coming from technology.
F.In science, basic curiosity-driven research can have unexpected important benefits.
G.That means we end up inside our own little bubbles, no longer coming across new ideas.

The negative effects of using cellphones on students
As we all know, more and more students use cellphones in school nowadays. Though a cellphone is a useful tool, it could have lots of negative effects on students.
Firstly, using cellphones for a long time does harm to students' health, especially to their eyesight. Secondly, by making calls and sending messages, students seldom communicate with relatives and friends face to face. Thirdly, some students send messages or watch videos instead of listening to teachers in class. As a result, their school grades go down rapidly. Last but not least, students who play with cellphones often have less time to play sports.
Therefore, parents and teachers should limit children's using cellphones.Unit 3课时练习(Listening and Talking)

Facebook has developed a kind of AI (人工智能),translating between any pair of 100 languages without depending on first translating to English.
Facebook’s system was trained on a data set of 7.5 billion sentence pairs collected from the web across 100 languages, though not all the languages had an equal number of sentence pairs.“What I was really interested in was cutting out English as a middle man.Globally there are plenty of countries where they speak two languages that aren’t English,”says Angela Fan of Facebook AI,who led the work.
For some language pairs, the new system shows prominent improvements in translation quality.Forexample, translating from Spanish to Portuguese is extremely strong because Spanish is the second-most spoken first language worldwide, meaning the researchers can get a lot of data.Translation between English and Belarusian (白俄罗斯语) also is improved because the AI can translate Russian into English, which shares similarities with Belarusian.
While the system isn’t in use on the social network site,Facebook plans to put it to work soon to manage the 20 billion translations made every day when people click“Translate”on posts (帖子) written in more than 160 languages.“Future work will be done on other languages,”saysFan,“especially for languages where we don’t have a lot of data, like South-East Asian and African languages.”
The work“breaks away from the English-centric models and tries to build more different models,”says Shelia Castilho of the ADAPT Centre at Dublin City University,Ireland.“That’s pretty new and different. But it’s hard to know if the AI does a right translation work,”saysCastilho.“The users may not know the other language,so they cannot judge the correctness of the translation.”

A. To collect data of all kinds of people.
B. To make learning different languages easier.
C. To achieve her dream of becoming a translator.

C. Researchers have a good knowledge of the two languages.
D. Spanish is spoken by the largest number of people.
3.What is Castilho worried about
A. The safety of AI translation.
B. The correctness of AI translation.
C. The way of using Facebook.

It got worse as they grew older.Three years ago,Zack, then 16,couldn’t make it through a day without making his sisters,Alex 11 and Taryn 9,angry.

Toy Story, Cars, Finding Nemo, Wall-E, Up — you have probably watched all these films.1. Let's go through the process of creating a cartoon film.
Creating the storyboard
The first step is to write down the main ideas of the story. 2. On the basis of the storyboard, the art department creates the first draft for the characters, their clothing and emotions, and the sets.
Making characters using 3-D modelling
A special computer program is used to create 3-D shapes of the characters, sets and props — this is called modelling. 3. Special equipment is used to record points on these shapes. This information is then sent to a software program which recreates the 3-D shapes.
Making them move
The layout crew(专业团队) decide how these characters should move and then the cartoonists take over. They use 3-D software to create the movements of each character, the skeleton's (骨架)movements, facial expressions and more, between key frames(画面) in the story. 4.
Dressing up for the show
The sets and props are "dressed" according to the designs laid out by the art department. The skin and hair for the characters and their costumes as well as special lighting effects such as shadows, shining reflections are also created.
Letting the show begin
5. The computers draw each frame one by one, with each frame slightly different from the previous one. Each frame takes 5-6 hours to create — imagine how much computing power and time it will take to create a 2-hour film of 24 frames per second!
