After their three children grew up and left home, Margaret Thompson and her husband, Kenneth, began taking walking holidays in Switzerland. In Interlaken, they would head up the mountain and watch the paragliders (滑翔伞运动员) launch themselves into the sky. Back in town, in a large park, they watched them return to the earth."Some day I’d love to do that," Thompson told Kenneth.
But there was always so much to do in Interlaken. Besides, Thompson didn’t know if Kenneth would have enjoyed it. "He was not so keen on heights as I was," she said. So she continued to watch the gliders take fight and land.
Kenneth died in 2005. Eleven years later, Thompson finally took to the skies herself, in a para glider at the age of 80. Although some people get scared while flying, she said she just feels free. Thompson did her second paraglide when she turned 85, and raised nearly 2,000 for a local charity. Before leaving Interlaken after her second fight, Thompson asked the organizers about the age limit for para gliding. They said: “Any age, as long as you’re fit.” Thompson, now 86, plans her third flight for when she is 90.
Thompson grew up living above her parents shop in Belfast. At 18, she helped in the shop while studying for her music diplomas (文凭) in Stranmillis, south Belfast. She started to teach piano to local children, and at the height of her teaching she gave 70 lessons a week. She still has 15 pupils on her books. “Over the years I’ve had so many that I’m teaching their children now.”
Is she scared of getting older “Fear No. People say: ‘Isn’t getting old awful I say: No. You are free to do more of the things that you want to do.” “People might worry about falling, it being the end of them. But that doesn’t bother me at all. When it’s your time, it’s your time. No matter where you are.” Thompson added.
24. What inspired Thompson to try para gliding at the age of 80
A. Her long-held curiosity toward it.
B. Her husband’s encouragement.
C. Her love for nature and adventure.
D. Her wish to overcome her fear of heights.
25. How did Thompson feel during her first paraglide
A. Nervous. B. Surprised.
C. Free. D. Uncomfortable.
26. What does Thompson think of aging
A. It inspires her to reach new heights.
B. It is an opportunity for more freedom.
C. It doesn’t make any difference to her.
D. It limits her ability to do what she wants.
27. How does Thompson view the risks brought by para gliding
A. They prevent her from enjoying paragliding.
B. They add to the excitement of paragliding.
C. She believes they don’t exist.
D. She accepts whatever may happen.

Have you ever played a computer game for a long time and then kept seeing the game’s images afterward This happened to me with the classic shape-falling game Tetris (俄罗斯方块), created in 1985 by Alexey Pajitnov.
Feeling stressed one evening, I turned on my Switch to find a game to play and relax with. That’s when I discovered Tetris. Before I knew it, I was obsessed. Even when I stopped, my brain was still playing, with the blocks falling in my mind. I started looking at objects in the real world and thinking about how they could be moved and stacked(堆叠) together. I even dreamed about Tetris. I was experiencing the common "Tetris effect".
Introduced by journalist Jeffrey Goldsmith in his 1994 Wired magazine article called This Is Your Brain on Tetris, the effect has been observed by psychologists and researchers. The lasting images of Tetris are due to the "Zeigarnik effect", in which people have better memories of uncompleted tasks than those of completed ones. Tetris, being a game that technically never ends, keeps you thinking of the game’s unfinished task, reported Tech Times. And the catchy music stays with you, too.
There are also positives to the Tetris Effect. In his 1991 study, psychologist Richard Haier at the University of California found that continuously playing Tetris resulted in the thickness of the cerebral cortex (大脑皮层) increasing, which improves brain efficiency(效率), reported psychology website Practical Pie. Haier’s discovery got Tetris put into the Guinness World Records Video Gamer’s Edition 2008, as the "first video game to be proven to improve brain functioning and efficiency".
Tetris has also been researched for use as a treatment for people suffering from trauma (创伤). The Yale Scientific Magazine reported that researchers at John Radcliffe Hospital in Oxford, UK, found that playing Tetris appeared to reduce intrusive (侵入性的) memories in the short term for individuals affected by motor vehicle accidents.
So, the next time you want to play a computer game, why not try the classic Tetris and see if it improves your brain function But he warned, you’ll likely be seeing falling blocks everywhere.
28. What does the underlined word "obsessed" in paragraph 2 probably mean
A. Quite shocked. B. Extremely interested.
C. Highly satisfied. D. Very curious.
29. What can we learn about the "Tetris Effect" from the text
A. It is connected to the way our memory functions.
B. It is an uncommon occurrence among children.
C. It can cause the "Zeigarnik effect".
D. It is primarily related to the game’s music.
30. What benefit can people get from continuously playing Tetris, according to Haier
A. Improved memory.
B. Lifted mood.
C. Better brain function.
D. Relief from painful experiences.
31. What is the author’s tone in the last paragraph
A. Serious. B. Amusing.
C. Worried. D. Doubtful.
D
Like dogs, wolves can recognize and respond to the voices of familiar humans more than those of strangers, according to a recent study. The research challenges the belief that dogs ability to differentiate human voices is due to selective breeding (选择性繁殖).
Holly Root Gutteridge and colleagues carried out experiments across five zoos and wildlife parks in Spain, involving a total of 24 gray wolves. The team set up speakers and first played the animals the voice of a number of strangers. Then, they played the wolves the voice of their keeper who would say familiar things to them in Spanish, such as “Hey, what’s up, wolves ” The wolves raised their heads, pricked their ears up, and turned toward the speaker. To test that the effect wasn’t accidental, the researchers went back to playing the wolves recordings of strangers and found that they once more lost interest. Finally, to make sure that the wolves truly knew their keepers’ voices, the team mixed things up and had the keepers say a series of unfamiliar phrases. Once more, the results held up.
Root Gutteridge pointed out the significance of wolves being able to differentiate between humans, despite the fact that our species went our separate evolutionary (进化的) ways tens of millions of years ago.
Before this, there had been a limited number of studies on the topic of how animals differentiate between the vocalizations (发声) of other species. Research has shown that our close cousins, gorillas, listen to people, but that was expected.
Given the new finding, “chances are that lots of species are listening to us and getting to know us as individuals,” Root Gutteridge said. “And it’s not all about us. Dogs could be listening to the neighbors’ cats and understanding the difference between one meow or the other. If the abilities are that general, it means that animals might be having a lot more cross- species interactions than we had thought about before.”
32. What established viewpoint does the recent research call into question
A. Dogs are the only animals that can differentiate human voices.
B. Wolves recognize the voices of humans better than dogs.
C. Wolves cannot understand human languages.
D. Selective breeding enables dogs to differentiate human voices.
33. How did the researchers test if the wolves truly recognized their keepers’ voices
A. By letting the keepers say unfamiliar phrases in Spanish.
B. By asking strangers to reproduce the keepers’ voices.
C. By playing recordings of strangers speaking familiar phrases.
D. By changing the playback speed of the keepers’ recordings.
34. Why are gorillas mentioned in paragraph 5
A. To stress their close relationship with humans.
B. To offer additional evidence for the recent study.
C. To point out another species that can differentiate voices.
D. To explain how animals’ ability to differentiate humans’ voices developed.
35. What does the last paragraph mainly talk about
A. The focus of the future studies.
B. The limitations of the research.
C. The significance of the research.
D. The uniqueness of the experiments.

67. 阅读下面材料,根据其内容和所给段落开头语续写两段,使之构成一篇完整的短文。
I knew there wouldn’t be any presents that Christmas, which made me a bit sad. I was twelve and the oldest. My sisters, Angie and Susan, didn’t understand that our parents had no money but I saw the nearly empty cupboard. I knew Dad had been laid off.
Dad was a proud man who had trouble asking for help, especially when it came to finances (财务). In fact, he rarely accepted gifts of money for his struggling family. Food and clothing for his little girls and wife were thankfully accepted, but money was not.
Grandma Margaret our neighbor across the street, was a good friend to my mom when she so desperately (极度) needed one. My mom’s family all lived far away, and we were lucky if we saw them once a year. We couldn’t afford the gas. So, Margaret became someone in whom my momma could confide (与……交心). Either Momma told Margaret about the financial struggles that holiday season, or Margaret saw there were no presents under the tree.
One day near Christmas, we heard a knock on the door, and in walked Grandma Margaret with a huge bag and a delicately wrapped (包装精美的) present. She walked over to the tree and placed that present under its branches. “For your mommy and daddy,” she said with a smile. Then she opened the huge bag and began calling our names. Each time she handed one of us girls a gift, she would say, “Not until Christmas morning!” We were excited!
After she left, we rushed to the tree and started shaking the packages, trying to figure out what was in each brightly wrapped package. I walked over to check my mom and dad’s gift. I picked it up and tried to imagine what might be inside. New plates for the dinner table No, our dinner plates were fine. I’d have to wait until Christmas Day to find out what was inside.
注意:
1.续写词数应为150左右;
2.请按如下格式在相应位置作答。
Paragraph 1: Fast forward to Christmas morning.

W: So what’s the problem
M: My parents. They’re the problem! They don’t want me to have a party.
W: What! Why not
M: They’ve organized a family dinner in a restaurant. Oh, and they’ve invited my cousins, too. You know, the really boring ones!
W: You poor thing!
M: I mean, I’ve been sending out invitations all day. I’ve sent over 50 texts and emails. I’ve set the whole party up – and now this!

W: Yes, they do. But the article I read mentioned ways to compensate for that.
M: How
W: By adding leg exercises, so the arms don’t do all the work. It’s said that the more of the body that is involved in the exercise, the better.
M: And in turn, I’m sure that there is a greater chance of losing weight.
W: Sounds right to me.
M: So, what exercises do the experts recommend
W: They mentioned quite a few. But some of the most popular ones are cycling with special bicycles that make you use both your arms and legs, and walking while you wear arm weights.

【解析】
【原文】W: Last class, we talked about different diet cultures all over the world. Today, I will tell you something about the different table manners in different places around the world. Do you know how to behave at the table And how should we use knives and forks in a formal Western meal
When having a meal, Europeans usually hold the knife in the right hand, and the fork in the left. They use the knife and fork with both hands and keep them in their hands until they finish eating.
But Americans, on the other hand, may use just one hand whenever possible and keep the other hand on their lap. They use the fork in their right hand to pick up fried potatoes. When they have to cut meat, they change the fork to the left hand and cut it. Then, they put down the knife and change the fork to their right hand to pick up the sliced meat. Then, perhaps, they will suddenly think of their coffee or orange juice. So they have to put down their fork in order to drink the coffee or orange juice. As you can see, Americans are busy at the dinner table.
Europeans usually have their coffee after meals, but most Americans prefer to have coffee during the meal. If you are present at a formal dinner, you might be confused to find many forks, knives and spoons put before you. You might be lost as to what to do with them. But don’t worry. There’s a simple rule. You just use them in the order in which they lie – working from the outside in.

A They prevent her from enjoying paragliding.
B. They add to the excitement of paragliding.
C. She believes they don’t exist.
D. She accepts whatever may happen.
【答案】24. A 25. C 26. B 27. D

【24题详解】
推理判断题。根据第一段“After their three children grew up and left home, Margaret Thompson and her husband, Kenneth, began taking walking holidays in Switzerland. In Interlaken, they would head up the mountain and watch the paragliders (滑翔伞运动员) launch themselves into the sky. Back in town, in a large park, they watched them return to the earth."Some day I’d love to do that," Thompson told Kenneth.”(在他们的三个孩子长大离开家后,玛格丽特·汤普森和她的丈夫肯尼斯开始在瑞士徒步度假。在因特拉肯,他们会爬到山上,观看滑翔伞飞向天空。回到城里,在一个大公园里,他们看着他们回到了地面。汤普森告诉肯尼斯:“总有一天我也想这么做。”)以及第二段中“Besides, Thompson didn’t know if Kenneth would have enjoyed it. "He was not so keen on heights as I was," she said. So she continued to watch the gliders take fight and land.”(此外,汤普森不知道肯尼斯是否会喜欢。“他不像我那么喜欢爬高,”她说。于是她继续观看滑翔伞飞行和降落。)可知,汤普森在观看滑翔伞运动员起飞和降落时,表达了自己希望有一天能够尝试滑翔伞的愿望。因此,她的兴趣和好奇心激发了她在80岁时尝试滑翔伞。故选A项。
【25题详解】
细节理解题。根据第三段中“Although some people get scared while flying, she said she just feels free.”(虽然有些人在飞行时会感到害怕,但她说她只觉得自由。)可知,汤普森在第一次尝试滑翔伞时并没有感到害怕,相反,她感到自由。故选C项。
【26题详解】
推理判断题。根据最后一段中“Is she scared of getting older “Fear No. People say: ‘Isn’t getting old awful I say: No. You are free to do more of the things that you want to do.””(她害怕变老吗?“害怕吗?不。人们说:‘变老不是很可怕吗?我说:不。你可以自由地做更多你想做的事情。)可推知,汤普森认为年龄的增长让她能做更多自己想做的事情。故选B项。

Have you ever played a computer game for a long time and then kept seeing the game’s images afterward This happened to me with the classic shape-falling game Tetris (俄罗斯方块) created in 1985 by Alexey Pajitnov.
A. Serious. B. Amusing.
C. Worried. D. Doubtful.
【答案】28. B 29. A 30. C 31. B

词句猜测题。根据第二段划线后的句子“Before I knew it, I was obsessed. Even when I stopped, my brain was still playing, with the blocks falling in my mind. I started looking at objects in the real world and thinking about how they could be moved and stacked(堆叠) together. I even dreamed about Tetris. (在我意识到之前,我已经obsessed。即使我停止了,我的大脑仍在玩,这些方块在我脑海中落下。我开始观察现实世界中的物体并思考如何将它们移动并堆放在一起。我甚至梦到了俄罗斯方块)”可知,此处描述作者对俄罗斯方块着迷了。所以obsessed的意思是入迷的,着迷的。故选B。
【29题详解】
细节理解题。根据第三段第二句“The lasting images of Tetris are due to the "Zeigarnik effect", in which people have better memories of uncompleted tasks than those of completed ones.(俄罗斯方块的持久图像是由于蔡格尼克记忆效应,这个效应指出人们对未完成任务的记忆比对已完成任务的记忆要好)”可知,俄罗斯方块效应与我们在记忆方面的功能有关。故选A。
【30题详解】
推理判断题。根据第四段第二句“ In his 1991 study, psychologist Richard Haier at the University of California found that continuously playing Tetris resulted in the thickness of the cerebral cortex (大脑皮层) increasing, which improves brain efficiency(效率), reported psychology website Practical Pie.(心理学网站Practical Pie报道,加利福尼亚大学的心理学家 Richard Haier在他的1991年的研究中发现,不断地玩俄罗斯方块会导致大脑皮层厚度增加,改善大脑效率)”可知,研究表明,持续玩俄罗斯方块可以让大脑运转更高效。故选 C。
【31题详解】

Like dogs wolves can recognize and respond to the voices of familiar humans more than those of strangers, according to a recent study.
【答案】32. D 33. A 34. C 35. C

【33题详解】
细节理解题。根据第三段描述的实验过程尤其是最后一句“Finally, to make sure that the wolves truly knew their keepers’ voices, the team mixed things up and had the keepers say a series of unfamiliar phrases.(最后,为了确保狼真的能听懂饲养员的声音,研究小组把东西搞混了,让饲养员说一系列不熟悉的短语。)”可知,为证明狼真的能听出饲养员的声音,研究人员让饲养员用西班牙语说狼不熟悉的词语,故选A。
【34题详解】
推理判断题。根据倒数第二段“Before this, there had been a limited number of studies on the topic of how animals differentiate between the vocalizations (发声) of other species. Research has shown that our close cousins, gorillas, listen to people, but that was expected.(在此之前,关于动物如何区分其他物种的发声的研究数量有限。研究表明,我们的近亲大猩猩会听人说话,但这是意料之中的。)”可知,后面提到大猩猩会听人说话的例子,是为了列举除了狼之外另一个具有这种能力的物种,故选C。
【35题详解】
主旨大意题。根据最后一段“Given the new finding, “chances are that lots of species are listening to us and getting to know us as individuals,” Root Gutteridge said. “And it’s not all about us. Dogs could be listening to the neighbors’ cats and understanding the difference between one meow or the other. If the abilities are that general, it means that animals might be having a lot more cross- species interactions than we had thought about before.”(考虑到这项新发现,“很有可能有很多物种正在倾听我们的声音,并开始了解我们作为个体的存在,”Root Gutteridge说。“这并不全是我们的事。狗可以听邻居的猫叫,并理解猫叫之间的区别。如果这种能力如此普遍,这意味着动物可能比我们以前想象的有更多的跨物种相互作用。”)”可知,最后一段是Root Gutteridge对这一研究发现的评论,指出这项研究让人们对动物的了解更进了一步,因此最后一段主要讲的是研究的意义。故选C。

How is it going I am very glad to hear about your interest in our school’s activity, Learn From Farmers. I’d like to introduce it to you.
Last Friday, we went to a nearby farm. The beautiful scenery left a deep impression on us. With experienced farmers’ instruction, we performed various tasks. First, we helped plant trees. Second, we sowed seeds in rows. And then, we fed pigs. Tired as we were, we all felt happy.
I learned a lot from this activity. By planting trees, I became aware of the significance of environmental protection. I also understood the real happiness and satisfaction brought by physical work.
I hope my introduction will be helpful to you. Do you have a similar experience I'm looking forward to your reply.

Grandma Margaret, our neighbor across the street, was a good friend to my mom when she so desperately (极度) needed one.
注意:
1.续写词数应为150左右;
2.请按如下格式在相应位置作答。
Paragraph 1: Fast forward to Christmas morning.
________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________
Paragraph 2: Immediately, Mom’s eyes teared up as she looked hopefully at my dad.
________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________
【答案】Fast forward to Christmas morning. I sprang out of bed as soon as I woke up and rushed downstairs to find my sisters already there. Overwhelmed by excitement and expectation, I couldn’t wait to open my present. The whole living room was filled with happiness. But what I was most curious about was the gift specifically for Mom and Dad. When Mom unwrapped the delicate package carefully, we were greeted by a $100 and a note saying “Just take it as a Christmas gift.”
Immediately, Mom’s eyes teared up as she looked hopefully at my dad. I knew he was caught in a dilemma. On one hand, Dad was a proud man who was unwilling to accept financial help. On the other hand, we really needed the money to help us pull through. So after hesitating for a while, he nodded his head, as if to say “It’s OK. You can keep it.” Mom bought some necessities with the money, including delicious food and invited Grandma Margaret to join us for dinner. We chatted a lot at the dinner table, and it was the happiest Christmas in my memory.
