On August 14, 2021, Haiti was hit by a 7.2 magnitude earthquake. The quake destroyed thousands of buildings, injured over 5,700 people, and left at least 1,297 others dead. Haiti has declared a state of emergency.
The earthquake struck near the town of Petit Trou de Nippes, in the western part of the country. That’s roughly 125 kilometers west of the capital, Port-au-Prince. The earthquake did serious damage in two nearby cities, Les Cayes and Jeremie, with Les Cayes hit the hardest. Homes, schools, churches, and offices were seriously damaged.
The number of injured people was so high that local hospitals have been unable to keep up. A number of medical workers at the general hospital in Les Cayes were themselves trapped in a building. Across the area, people were searching through the rubble (废墟) for survivors. But the earthquake also caused landslides (塌方), making the job even more difficult. There have been many aftershocks-smaller quakes which follow the main earthquake. With many buildings damaged by the earthquake, it’s not certain whether the buildings still standing in the area are safe. Many people are choosing to sleep outside rather than taking the risk of sleeping in a building.
Haiti has still not fully returned to normal from a 7.0 magnitude earthquake which destroyed much of Port-au-Prince and killed over 200,000 people in 2010. The country suffered again in 2016,when it was stricken) by Hurricane Matthew, which caused huge damage in Haiti. Storm Grace is expected to reach Haiti on Monday, bringing heavy rainfall with it.
Several countries have offered to help Haiti. The government says the country won’t officially ask for outside help until it is clear how much damage there is in all. But Haiti is not a rich country, and the government may not have the money for major efforts to rebuild the damaged areas.
6. Which was worst affected by this year’s earthquake

A. It has begun to rebuild after this year’s earthquake. B. It has just recovered from the 2010 earthquake.
C. It suffered from two kinds of hurricanes in 2016. D. It has experienced serious disasters in recent years.

Eleven of the world’s languages have at least 100 million native speakers. The biggest are Mandarin Chinese, English, Spanish, Arabic and Hindi. Next come Portuguese, Bengali, Russian, Japanese, French and German. Experts say these eleven languages are the mother tongues of half the world’s population. But the world has close to 7,000 languages. Linguists (语言学家) predict that as many as half of these may be at risk of disappearing by the end of this century. That would mean another language dies every two weeks.
Members of the Siletz Indian tribe (部落) in the northwestern state of Oregon take pride in their language. Their language, they say, “is as old as time itself”. But today very few people can speak it fluently. In fact, you can count the number of fluent speakers on one hand.
More than 10,000 entries can be found in the Siletz Online Talking Dictionary. Professor Harrison has posted talking dictionaries for seven other highly endangered languages from around the world. He says technology can not only spread the influence of major languages but also help save endangered ones. Smartphone applications, YouTube videos and Facebook pages have all become digital tools for language activists and experts.
Mr. Harrison and a researcher in Oregon have mapped areas of endangered languages. One is the Pacific Northwest in the United States. Others include the upper Amazon basin, Siberia and northern Australia.
In Canada’s far north, the Inuit people are struggling to preserve their native language, Inuktitut. Part of the effort involves Microsoft. The company is translating terms in its Windows operating system and Office software into Inuktitut. The programming group had to invent new words to include all the terms in some Windows and Word document menus.
Nowadays so many people will spend their entire day sitting in front of a computer. If you’re sitting in front of your computer in English all day, that just reinforces (强化) English. If you’re now using Inuktitut, it is reinforcing that this is your language. Microsoft has also worked with language activists in New Zealand, Spain and Wales to translate its software into Maori, Basque, Catalan and Welsh.
Nothing takes the place of speakers speaking to other speakers and to people who are learning. But this bridges a gap (空缺) that was just needed in some communities and in some tribes. Young members of the tribe are now texting each other in Siletz.
11. People of the Siletz Indian tribe are proud of their language because .
A. it’s easily mastered B. it’s widely spoken nowadays
C. it has a long history D. it deserves scientific research
12. According to Professor Harrison, technology .

D. helps the endangered languages known to more people
13. The computer program in Inuktitut is used by Inuit people to .
A. make their language spoken worldwide B. learn other languages conveniently
C help to spread the new technology D. strengthen the use of their native language
14. The last sentence implies that .
A. it’s hopeful to save the endangered language
B. young people like to accept and use the new technology
C. means of communication in the tribe has changed a lot
D. young people try their best to save their language

C 2. D 3. D 4. B 5. C
根据文章第一段“Unlike most athletes, Eddie did not come to the 1988 Calgary Olympic Winter Games for a medal. He came simply to compete. In doing so, he realized his dream.(与大多数运动员不同的是,Eddie并没有为了奖牌而参加1988年卡尔加里冬季奥运会。他来只是为了比赛。这样,他实现了自己的梦想。)”可知,他的梦想就是参加奥运会。故选C。
【2题详解】
推理判断题。根据文章第二段“At first, Eddie tried to make the British national ski team but failed. Then he chose the riskiest event, ski jumping. No British skier had ever competed in that sport, but having no competitors meant that Eddie had a better chance of qualifying (取得资格) for the 1988 Olympic Games.(起初,Eddie试图加入英国国家滑雪队,但失败了。然后他选择了风险最大的项目——跳台滑雪。没有英国滑雪运动员参加过这项运动,但是没有竞争对手意味着Eddie有更好的机会获得1988年奥运会的资格。)”可推断,Eddie选择这个项目是因为英国没有滑雪运动员参加这项运动,所以Eddie没有竞争对手,那么就更有机会获得参加奥运会的资格。故选D。
【3题详解】
推理判断题。根据文章第二段“Eddie had no coach, equipment, or financial support, but what he had was determination. Not afraid of what he lacked, Eddie set out to learn his chosen sport, training himself for nearly 2 years. And he managed to meet the qualification for Olympic ski jumping, and landed himself in the 1988 Olympic Games. Eddie was determined to compete, and while he came in last, he did manage to land his jumps, and he still holds the British record in that ing in last place actually made him the star of the Olympics and the true embodiment (化身) of the Olympic spirit.( Eddie没有教练,没有设备,也没有资金支持,但他有决心。
根据划线单词下一句“but we can struggle to find the courage to put ourselves back out there, or the creativity to find another way.(但我们可以努力找到勇气让自己回到那里,或者找到另一种方式的创造力。)”
