B
I still remember the days my grandmother used to take me on long walks along the summer grass. The sun was always shining on the small roots of the grass on the ground. I remember noticing how, even though the roots were small, they still managed to stick out. Even though there were other things that could attract people to the parts of the grass, somehow the mind always seemed to lead to the roots, or, more precisely, where it all started its origins.
I have learned to realize early on that if you come from a culture that is different from the mainstream culture, eventually you will have to choose. And sometimes, choosing isn’t an easy process. Growing up as a Korean American in the US, I have often felt the need to have to choose between the two cultures that I live by. Even with friends, I would be the outsider that is stuck somewhere in the middle.
On some days, I would choose to be the “white” version of myself, dyeing my hair blond, On other days, I would feel the need to relocate(迁移)to the Asian part of me. The part of me, also known as the “roots” of the grass, has always been kept hidden for whatever reason. Whenever I redye my own hair black, I get the feeling that I am preserving some of the roots that I may have left behind.
Sometimes, we just want to preserve those roots that we have kept hidden. We try extra hard to become “a part of”something we might have left behind. However, it is more meaningful if we allow that thing (culture in thin case) to become part of our daily lives. This way, we will become learn likely to forget “this” part of ourselves.
4. What did the author think of the roots of the grass on the ground
A. They were too small to be seen.
B. They grew well in the summer daylight.
C. They looked less attractive than the leaves.
D. They were more likely to grab people’s attention.
5. How would the author feel when staying with friends in America
A. She would feel stuck between two cultures.
B. She would feel desperate to share similarities with them.
C. She would feel unconcerned with any culture.
D. She would feel annoyed about their mainstream culture.
6. Why would the author redye her hair black
A. To create a new self-image.
B. To hide the Asian part of her.
C. To preserve her cultural roots.
D. To make her hair look natural.
7. What does the author mainly want to tell us in the text
A. The way to preserve our cultural roots.
B. The attitude we should hold to different cultures.
C. When in Rome do as the Romans do.
D. The longest journey begins with the first step.
D 5. A 6. C 7. A

Even though there were other things that could attract people to the parts of the grass, somehow the mind always seemed to lead to the roots, or, more precisely, where it all started its origins.”(我记得注意到,即使根很小,它们仍然能够伸出来。
根据第二段中“Growing up as a Korean American in the US, I have often felt the need tohave to choose between the two cultures that I live by. Even with friends, I would be the outsider that is stuck somewhere in the middle.”(作为一个在美国长大的韩裔美国人,我经常感到有必要在我生活的两种文化之间做出选择。 故选A。
根据第三段中“Whenever I redye my own hair black, I get the feeling that I am preserving some of the roots that I may have left behind.”(每当我把自己的头发重新染成黑色,我就会感觉到我在保留一些我可能留下的根。)
通读全文,根据最后一段中“However, it is more meaningful if we allow that thing (culture in thin case) to become n part of our daily lives. This way, we will become learn likely to forget “this” part of ourselves.”(然而,如果我们允许那样的事情(文化)成为我们日常生活的一部分,那就更有意义了。 故选A。

After decades of development and many trials and frustrations along the way, the James Webb Telescope has finally started to deliver what it came for. On July 12, NASA released the first science observations made by the suite of instruments carried on board the mission, marking what we eagerly anticipate will be the beginning of a new era in astronomy.
After the nail-biting launch on Christmas Day, a series of critical deployments followed to open up the telescope and its sunshade. If any of these operations had failed, James Webb would have been an unusable disaster. But the programme was perfectly executed, as the amazing observatory it has been planned to be.
It was very exciting to see the new images selected by an international committee of representatives from NASA. Scientists were not prepared for the level of crispness and fine detail that can be seen. It’s a joy to finally have such high-quality data.
Unveiled by US president Joe Biden, the stunning images of SMACS 0723, a cluster of thousands of galaxies, were released on July 11. The massive foreground galaxy groups magnify and twist the light of objects behind them, helping us to have a closer look at very faint objects in time.
The image shows the galaxy cluster as it appeared 4.6 billion years ago. Images such as this will help us understand how the first stars and galaxies formed. Some of these may be among the most distant objects known, from the beginning of the universe.
The size of a telescope-its aperture (孔径) -is the key thing that decides the ultimate quality of the images and the detail that can be observed. Bigger is better. With its six-metre aperture, James Webb is the largest telescope ever launched into space and from its vantage point a million miles from Earth, free from the Earth’s atmosphere, it is expected to deliver the best, most detailed views of the universe we have ever seen. There is no doubt that it will revolutionize our understanding of the universe, just as its predecessor, the Hubble Space Telescope, once did.
8. What marked the beginning of a new era in astronomy
A. The successful launch of the James Webb Telescope.
B. The perfect operation of the James Webb Telescope.
C. The first scientific exploration mission carried out by the James Webb Telescope.
D. The new images about the galaxy cluster unveiled by US president Joe Biden.
9. What made scientists surprised
A. How the first stars and galaxies formed 4.6 billion years ago.
B. The clear and detailed images observed by the James Webb Telescope.
C. The programme of the James Webb Telescope was perfectly performed.
D. The James Webb Telescope went through decades of development and tests.
10. What does the underlined word “faint” mean in paragraph 4
A. Unclear. B. Tiny. C. Weak. D. Blank.
11. What can be inferred from the last paragraph
A. The James Webb Telescope is larger than the Hubble Space Telescope.
B. The Hubble Space Telescope covers a distance of six metres.
C. Our understanding of the universe has been completely changed by the James Webb Telescope.
D. A million miles from Earth is the best location for astronomy observation.
C 9. B 10. A 11. A

根据第一段“On July 12, NASA released the first science observations made by the suite of instruments carried on board the mission, marking what we eagerly anticipate will be the beginning of a new era in astronomy. (7月12日,美国宇航局发布了该任务所携带的一套仪器所做的第一次科学观测,标志着我们热切期待的天文学新时代的开始。)”可知,詹姆斯·韦伯望远镜执行的第一个科学探索任务标志着天文学新时代的开始。故选C。
【9题详解】
细节理解题。根据第三段“Scientists were not prepared for the level of crispness and fine detail that can be seen. It’s a joy to finally have such high-quality data. (科学家们对能看到的清晰度和精细细节没有心理准备。终于有了这么高质量的数据,真令人高兴。)”可知,詹姆斯·韦伯望远镜观测到的清晰而详细的图像让科学家感到惊讶。故选B。
【10题详解】
词句猜测题。根据划线词前半句“The massive foreground galaxy groups magnify and twist the light of objects behind them, (巨大的前景星系群放大并扭曲了它们背后物体的光)”推知,这种放大和扭曲的光可以帮助我们及时地近距离观察非常模糊的的物体。 故选A。
根据最后一段“With its six-metre aperture, Jame Webb is the largest telescope ever launched into space and from its vantage point a million mile from Earth, free from the Earth’s atmosphere, it is expected to deliver the best, most detailed views of the universe we have ever seen. There is no doubt that it will revolutionize our understanding of the universe, just as its predecessor, the Hubble Space Telescope, once did. (詹姆斯·韦伯望远镜的口径为6米,是迄今发射到太空中的最大望远镜。它位于距离地球100万英里的有利位置,不受地球大气层的影响,有望为我们提供迄今为止所见过的最好、最详细的宇宙图景。毫无疑问,它将彻底改变我们对宇宙的理解,就像它的前身哈勃太空望远镜曾经做的那样)”可推断,詹姆斯·韦伯望远镜比哈勃太空望远镜大。故选A。

Every time your fingers touch your cell phone, they leave behind traces of chemicals. And each chemical offers clues to you and your activities. By analyzing them. scientists might be able to piece together a story about your recent life, a new study finds.
A molecule is a group of atoms. It represents the smallest amount of some chemical. Your skin is covered in molecules picked up by everything you’ve touched. With each new thing your skin contacts, you leave behind some small share of what it’d touched earlier.
Researchers at the University of California. San Diego (UCSD)recently analyzed such chemical leftovers on the phones of 39 volunteers. The study was led by biochemist Amina Bouslimani. To explore those remains, the UCSD team wiped the surface of each volunteer’s phone with a cotton swab(药棉签). The scientists also swabbed each person’s right hand.
Then the researchers compared the chemicals found on each cell phone. The scientists discovered as many of the molecules as they could. They then compared these to a database of chemicals. Pieter Dorrestein. a UCSD pharmaceutical chemist, had helped set up that database a few years earlier, which contains various substances, including spices, caffeine and medicines.
Traces of anywhere from hundreds to thousands of different molecules turned up on each phone. The molecules reflected what had been in the body, and what each person had handled before touching the phone. From all these molecules, Bouslimani says. “We could tell if a person is likely female, uses high-end cosmetics, dyes her hair, drinks coffee, prefers beer over wine or likes spicy food.”
Police already use molecular analyses to look for traces of explosives or illegal drugs. To date, Dorrestein says. he’s never heard of police using phone remains to narrow down behavioral clues to search for a suspect. But detectives might one day use such data to track down someone who left a phone behind at a crime scene.
12. What can we conclude about the user by analyzing the leftovers on the phone
A. Personality. B. Intelligence. C. Appearance. D. Lifestyle.
13. What was the first thing needed to be done for the study
A. Comparing different chemicals. B. Hiring volunteers with cell phones.
C. Building a database containing chemicals. D. Collecting the chemicals from phones.
14. What’s the author’s attitude towards the application of the research finding
A. Uninterested. B. Disappointed. C. Doubtful. D. Positive.
15. What should be the best title for the text
A. Fingers Leave Clues about You on Your Phone
B. Your Phone May Be Home to Various Chemicals
C. Molecules Are Used to Search for Illegal Drugs
D. Cell Phones Will be Used in More Fields
D 13. C 14. D 15. A

B The clear and detailed images observed by the James Webb Telescope.

14 What’s the author’s attitude towards the application of the research finding

Their 12-foot boat was taking in water little by little, and the wind was picking up. Her father, Gary French, hurried to operate the engine, while Kiana,16, was in the middle with Cierrah, her sister, frightened but still able to keep calm.
Kiana asked Cierrah to take off one of her cowboy boots, with which she got some of the water out. Hard as she tried, that little effort would not help stop the boat sinking. Moments later, the unthinkable happened. The boat was full of water and then it flipped over. Kiana and her sister were dumped in the water. Their father, who had had a surgery six months ago, managed not to be thrown into the water but seemed to have great pain in the chest due to the sudden change.
Kiana quickly put on her life jacket and saw Cierrah’s and her father’s life jackets floating away. She reacted quickly to get them back and held her sister onto the boat. They were so far out in the middle of the lake that they could not see the shore clearly. What’s worse.it was getting harder to stay above the waves. Their father swam over and hugged his two girls. Cierrah crying silently. Kiana heard her beloved sister murmur, “I can’t feel my feet.”
Kiana knew the only thing to do was to get to shore herself and find help. She looked up at her father, exchanging a concerned glance, turned round and swam as hard as she could towards the shore
Fighting against the strong currents and cold wind, she screamed for help at the top of her lungs every three minutes or so.
