Famous People Who Begin With Difficulties
Oprah Winfrey
Probably having one of the most famous success stories, Oprah was born into a poor family in Mississippi, raised by a single mother living on welfare. She was physically, and mentally abused during her childhood. Despite her initial struggles as a young girl, she turned herself into one of the most successful talk show hosts of our time.
Jim Carrey
Jim Carrey has been the star of some of the most successful movies of all time. But Carrey grew up extremely poor in Canada. When he was a teenager, his family took security jobs in a factory to help pay the bills. And during his first stand-up comedy performance, he was booed off (喝倒彩) the stage. Not shortly after, he made it big on In Living Color and then went on to star in Dumb & Dumber, The Mask, and Ace Ventura in the same year!
James Dyson
If you thought Thomas Edison’s failures were bad, let me introduce you to James Dyson, the famous inventor of the Dyson vacuums (真空吸尘器) you see all over the television. Dyson developed over 5,000 failed prototypes (原型) before finding the bagless vacuum brand. Not only that, he put his entire savings account into his prototypes over fifteen years! Luckily, the bagless vacuum worked.

Before Stephen King became known as a great living writer—having written over 60 novels, many of which have been adapted for film and television—King was rejected over and over again. When my two boys have free time, they want to go to the mall. No, they aren’t shop-a-holics (购物狂). They want to go to gaze at sneakers.
These aren’t the sneakers you find in Foot Locker. They are limited editions—usually Nikes—that range in price from $250-$900 or more. There’s the Chunky Dunkys, a collaboration between Nike and ice cream maker Ben and Jerry’s. And the Space Jam Jordans. And dozens of other pairs of shoes, all of which they know by name and all of which are very, very expensive.
That made me wonder: How did this sneaker culture develop After all, when I was a kid, I wanted Jordan brand shoes too. But they cost $100 and I would wear them until they fell apart. Now, my boys long for shoes that cost ten times that and if they got them, they would never even think of scuffing them up by wearing them.
It all started during the Industrial Revolution, when the very wealthy began to find they had leisure time on their hands, Elizabeth Semmelhack, who runs the Bata Shoe Museum in Toronto, told me.
“These’ nouveau riche (暴发户)’ industrialists wanted to show that they had arrived. And so, the ancient game of tennis was revived.” explained Semmelhack, “But the problem with lawn tennis—one, the lawns of lawn tennis are extremely expensive, so they didn’t want people to run around in leather shoes. And two, when you play on lawn, you can get your feet wet. So rubber soled shoes, the sneaker, was invented as something that the wealthy could wear as they pursued these wealthy pleasures. Besides, rubber was, at the time, quite expensive, so having shoes with rubber soles was seen as a status symbol.”
But for most of us, sneakers were something you wore—not something you collected. With the development of internet, older versions of shoes could be purchased and collected. And sneaker companies, Nike especially, leaned into the trend.
4. What is the Chunky Dunkys
A. It’s a company’s name.
B. It’s a kind of ice cream.
C. It’s a kind of limited edition sneaker.
D. It’s one of the author’s kids’ name.
5. Why did the author mention his experience as a kid
A. To show he was poor when he was a kid.
B. To encourage his children to wear cheap shoes.
C. To give an example about the development of sneaker culture.
D. To show Jordan brand shoes have been popular for a long time.
6. What can we know from Semmelhack’s words
A. Rubber soled shoes could prevent feet from wetting.
B. These ‘nouveau riche’ industrialists created lawn tennis.
C Leather shoes were more expensive than rubber soled shoes.
D. The very wealthy were busy with their work during Industrial Revolution.
7. What does the author’s attitude towards collecting sneakers
A. Objective. B. Critical.
C. Favourable. D. Unconcerned.
C
My neighbour Orlando is a paramedic (护理人员). He and his wife are some of the nicest people I have ever met. A few years back we started this sort of “favor war”, where one of us would do something for the other, such as shoveling (铲) his driveway or helping him build a shed, and next time the other would try to top it with another favor.
Yesterday morning there was maybe 2 or 3 feet of snow on the ground and I remembered he shoveled my driveway for me last snowfall. So I took out my shovel and took care of both our sidewalks and driveways because it was my turn to do a favor back. It took a while but I finished and got into my car for work. What I did not realize was that Orlando had to work that day too.
Fast forward to this morning I got a knock on my door. It was him. He immediately shook my hand and informed me that because I shoveled his driveway and sidewalk for him, he was able to get to work earlier. As soon as he started his shift, a call came through that a young boy was in a medical emergency. Luckily he and his partner were only about 2 minutes away, but the next closest ambulance was in 10 minutes. This kid didn’t have 10 minutes. He barely had 2 minutes. Because my neighbour got to work sooner, the young boy got to live his life.
This isn’t a brag (吹嘘). This is to inform others that even the smallest favors can have the biggest impacts. It wasn’t too much of trouble to shovel his driveway for him, but because I did, the young kid got to see his family again, go back to school again, talk to his friends again and live his life.
8. What can we know about the writer and Orlando
A. They once had a conflict. B. They signed a favorable agreement.
C. They favor shoveling snow together. D. They are always ready to help each other.
9. Who saved the boy before it was too late
A. The writer. B. The boy’s parents.
C. Orlando and his partner. D. Orlando and his wife.
10. Why did Orlando knock on the author’s door in the morning
A. To tell him to clear up the snow. B. To tell him to do a favour back.
C. To express his thanks to him. D. To say he started his shift.
11. What does the writer intend to tell us
A. Never ask for trouble. B. No favor is too small.
C One cannot always be lucky. D. Don’t lose heart in an emergency.
D
Most of us spend our lives surrounded by screens, which offer us convenience as well as connection and an ocean of information. But since it’s easy to feel pressured to keep up with every notification, technology may feel more like a burden than a blessing. Thus, the idea of “digital detox” is becoming increasingly inviting.
The phrase “digital detox” describes getting rid of TV, phones, computers and other forms of technology that control our lives for a period of time. Some experts advocate completely avoiding unnecessary screen time for 30 years. Others suggest using an app that will limit the amount of time one can spend on certain websites. A third option is logging out in evenings or on weekends. Others simply turn their phones off at scheduled times. Some even pay high prices to take vacations in places where they can unplug from their digital routine.
Why might you want to take a digital detox Perhaps you find that you are spending longer than you intend on certain apps or that they distract you from more important things. Perhaps social media is depressing because you compare yourself to others or you fear missing out on things that other people are enjoying. Constant negative news can also give rise to a lot of stress.
Technology can also have physical effects. Many people experience back or neck pain as a result of bending over screens. The blue light coming from most screens can also affect people’s sleep by preventing production of melatonin(褪黑素).
Giving up all screens may not be realistic, but strategic breaks from technology may be good for your body, mind, emotions and relationships. It is high time that you picked a time to turn off your devices and focus on really important things.
12. Why does the author say “technology may feel more like a burden than a blessing” in paragraph 1
A. To confirm a concept.
B. To present a problem.
C. To explain a rule.
D. To make a prediction.
13. What does the underlined word “unplug” in paragraph 2 mean
A. Recover. B. Benefit. C. preventing D. Suffer.
14. Which could be the reason for one to start “digital detox”
A. Apps selection difficulty.
B. Fear of missing important things.
C. Exposure to false news.
D. Pressure from social comparison.
15. What is the purpose of the text
A. To recommend healthy lifestyles.
B. To call for reducing the use of digital devices.
C. To give instructions on starting digital detox.
D. To present different attitudes to digital products.

第二节(满分25分)
47. 阅读下面材料,根据其内容和所给段落开头语续写两段,使之构成一篇完整的短文。
I couldn’t bear it any longer! My best friend had gone for lunch with the most popular girl in class, leaving me to eat my tuna sandwich alone in the library. Worse still, during dance class, my partner, a boy, refused to hold my hand and bad mouthed me behind my back, further feeding my anger. It was, without a doubt, my worst day in school. I was hurt and mad, and looking for a target to release my anger.
When I got home from school, Mother had baked peanut butter cookies and piled them up on a plate. She even artfully decorated each one with royal icing and topped it with sugar. ”Couldn’t you have made chocolate chip “ I said moodily. ”I could have,“ she replied from the laundry room, ”but I made peanut butter ones. Eat them while they’re still hot, sweetie.“ Although I thought Mother was rather unthoughtful, I caved in and took a few bites unwillingly in the end. Later, when she pulled a grilled chicken from the oven and sang a merry tune, I somehow got annoyed again—Never mind that Mother had busied herself the whole afternoon with the cooking just to put this hot meal on the table. I wanted hamburgers.
”Nobody even likes that kind of food, Mum! Why didn’t you make hamburgers “ I complained. Mother took a deep breath, ran her fingers through her messy hair and looked into my eyes with a puzzled look. ”Sweetheart, you’ve never complained about having it before. What’s up “ she said matter-of-factly (平淡地). It was from there that all went downhill. I screamed and complained nonstop until Mother hit her limit. It was the first time that Mother had got mad at me. Nobody seemed to care about me, including my beloved mother! Ultimately, we had a shouting match in the hallway.
注意:1.续写词数应为150左右;
2.请按如下格式作答。
Unable to contain her anger, ”No dinner for you! Go to bed now!" she exploded.

Then a thick, juicy smell of hamburgers greeted my nose.

A. It’s a company’s name.
B. It’s a kind of ice cream.

5. Why did the author mention his experience as a kid
A. To show he was poor when he was a kid.
B To encourage his children to wear cheap shoes.
C. Leather shoes were more expensive than rubber soled shoes.
D. The very wealthy were busy with their work during Industrial Revolution.
7. What does the author’s attitude towards collecting sneakers
A. Objective. B. Critical.

C. One cannot always be lucky. D. Don’t lose heart in an emergency.
【答案】8. D 9. C 10. C 11. B

【答案】12. B 13. C 14. D 15. B
【解析】
【导语】本文是一篇说明文。文章主要介绍了“数字排毒”这个概念,以及数字产品给我们带来的影响。
【12题详解】
推理判断题。根据第一段中“Most of us spend our lives surrounded by screens, which offer us convenience as well as connection and an ocean of information. But since it’s easy to feel pressured to keep up with every notification, technology may feel more like a burden than a blessing. 故作者提到“technology may feel more like a burden than a blessing”的目的是为了提出当前人类所面临的问题。故选B。
【13题详解】
词义猜测题。根据划线词前面的句子“Some experts advocate completely avoiding unnecessary screen time for 30 years. Others suggest using an app that will limit the amount of time one can spend on certain websites. A third option is logging out in evenings or on weekends. Others simply turn their phones off at scheduled times.(一些专家主张在30年内完全避免不必要的屏幕时间。
根据第三段中“Perhaps social media is depressing because you compare yourself to others or you fear missing out on things that other people are enjoying.(也许社交媒体令人沮丧是因为你把自己和别人比较,或者你害怕错过别人喜欢的东西)”可知,进行“数字排毒”的原因之一是,在社交媒体中你总是拿自己和别人进行比较或者害怕错过别人喜欢的东西。故选D。
【15题详解】
推理判断题。根据最后一段中“Giving up all screens may not be realistic, but strategic breaks from technology may be good for your body, mind, emotions and relationships. It is high time that you picked a time to turn off your devices and focus on really important things.(放弃所有屏幕可能不太现实,但战略性地远离科技可能对你的身体、思想、情感和人际关系都有好处。现在是时候选择一个时间关掉你的设备,专注于真正重要的事情)”可知,作者认为现在是时候选择一个时间关掉你的设备,专注于真正重要的事情了,由此推测本文的目的是呼吁读者减少使用数码设备。故选B。

【答案】Para. 1:
Unable to contain her anger “No dinner for you! Go to bed now!” she exploded. It was the first time that Mother had got mad at me. Nobody seemed to care about me, including my beloved mother! My teeth were chattering, unable to utter a single word, with my hands shaking. I stormed to my bedroom, and slammed the door behind me. Lying on bed, I finally calmed down and my breathing became regular. A sharp pain of fault hit me. The more I thought about my actions, the heavier my heart felt. Then, I heard strange sounds coming from the kitchen. Puzzled, I opened my bedroom door, tiptoeing towards the kitchen.
Para. 2:
Then a thick, juicy smell of hamburgers greeted my nose. Sensing my footsteps, Mother looked up, asking tentatively, “Want some ” I took a bite guiltily, shedding regretful tears. “Mom, I’m awfully sorry for being awful to you today. I had a bad day at school. I don’t deserve this.” I apologized. “I should have guessed you’re in a tough spot, sorry, honey. I remember those growing up years.” Mother smiled and gave me a big bear hug. There was nothing like mother’s unconditional love — that night, I should have been punished; instead, Mother dished up a hearty portion of grace.
