Giraffenap is a new style of sleeping pod (仓) that encourages workers to get power naps during the day as a way of improving concentration and work efficiency.
Japan usually emphasizes extreme dedication to one’s work. In order to get used to this kind of heavy schedule and stress, some workers turn to short power naps. These are known to improve energy levels and concentration, as long as the person doesn’t go into deep sleep. In order to make it easier for people to get power naps pretty much anywhere, one company has begun installing vertical (垂直) sleeping pods called Giraffenap in cafes all over the country.
One of the main reasons that Giraffenap pods have a vertical orientation is space—it’s much easier to have them installed in small cafes and restaurants because they take up little room—but it’s not the only reason. The standing position makes it easier for the person using the pod to wake up from their power nap.
Each Giraffenap pod features an alarm system that can be set by the user and support points for various parts of the body, which can make sure that the user remains in an upright position when napping. The pods also feature a height adjustment system so that anyone can achieve the perfect posture while using them.
Giraffenap sleeping pods currently come in two styles: a plain white model and one that uses a more traditional bamboo design. They offer great sound insulation (隔音), various sounds designed to support sleep and a built-in ventilation system.
Giraffenap is currently being put into effect in some coffee shops in Japan, and if the response is positive enough, we might also start seeing them in other places.

In the summer of 2021, an unseasonal event took place. More than 100 miles of Florida’s coast around Tampa Bay became an oxygen-depleted (缺氧的) zone containing dead fish along the nearby shoreline.
Much of the conversation around our climate crisis highlights the emission of greenhouse gases and their effect on warming, sea-level rise and ocean acidification (海洋酸化). We hear little about the effect of climate change on oxygen levels, particularly in oceans and lakes. But water without adequate oxygen cannot support life. For the three billion people who depend on coastal fisheries for income, declining ocean oxygen levels are devastating.
As ocean and atmospheric scientists focus on climate, we believe that oceanic oxygen levels are the next big victim of global warming. To stop the situation from worsening, we need to expand our attention to include the dangerous state of oceanic oxygen levels — the life-support system of our planet. We need to accelerate ocean-based climate solutions that boost oxygen. Examples include nature-based solutions such as those discussed at the 2021 United Nations Climate Change Conference (COP26) held in Glasgow.
Enhanced monitoring of oxygen and the establishment of an oxygen-accounting system are a must. Putting oxygen into the climate story motivates us to do the work to understand the deep systemic changes happening in our complex atmospheric and oceanic systems. We celebrated the return of humpback whales in recent years to an increasingly clean New York Harbor and Hudson River. However, dead fish blocked the Hudson in the summer as warmer waters carried less oxygen.
Ecosystem changes connected to physical and chemical system-level data may point the way to new approaches to climate solutions. It includes an enhanced understanding of the life-support system of our planet. Roughly 40 percent of the world’s people depend on the ocean for their livelihoods. If we do not save marine life from oxygen starvation, we starve ourselves.
12. What is the result of less ocean oxygen according to the text
A A rise in the coastal fisheries. B. The warming of the atmosphere.
C. The emission of greenhouse gases. D. An increase in deaths of sea animals.
13. What can we infer from Paragraph 3
A. Attention to oceans is necessary. B. Global warming effects are serious.
C. Oceanic oxygen levels are dangerous. D. Ways to boost oceanic oxygen are urgent.
14. Why does the author mention humpback whales in Paragraph 4
A. To bring in an oxygen-accounting system in climate.
B. To explain the urgency of oxygen levels in atmosphere.
C. To call for more attention to oxygen starvation in waters.
D. To show the achievements in reducing air pollution.
15. Which of the following can be the best title for the text
A. Save Marine Life. B. Make Oceans Safe.
C. Let Oceans Breathe. D. Keep Marine System.

I didn’t know the lady, but I saw her often around town with her two small children. She appeared to be shy, always looking down, trying not to make eye contact. She often wore the same clothes, and so did her children. I felt her discomfort when I saw her at the supermarket checkout. She reminded me of myself years ago. We had to go through a tough time.
Back then, I couldn’t afford a new winter coat for my daughter, and I didn’t know what I was going to do. Luckily, my three younger children could wear hand-me-downs. One night, I said to myself in my heart that I wished someone to offer me help. I did it for the first time since my husband’s unemployment.
The next morning, a neighbour came into the place where I worked. “I know you must feel unbelievable, This morning, I had an overwhelming (无法抗拒的) feeling that you needed this,” she whispered. She insisted on giving me twenty dollars. My eyes started to tear as she continued, “I also have a box of clothes in my car that I was going to donate. Please take what you need.” It was really a shock of getting her help. Was this the response to my word the night before
Going through the large box of clothes, I found several winter items for my children, including a dark purple jacket that looked like it would fit my daughter. Although grateful, I felt embarrassed. The woman must have sensed my discomfort. She raised my chin so I could look at her. “We all need help at one time or another, “she said. “One day, you’ll be the one helping someone in need.”
I thanked her and promised I would always try to pay it forward.

D
A. A rise in the coastal fisheries. B. The warming of the atmosphere.
C. The emission of greenhouse gases. D. An increase in deaths of sea animals.
13. What can we infer from Paragraph 3
A. Attention to oceans is necessary. B. Global warming effects are serious.
C Oceanic oxygen levels are dangerous.
【答案】12. D 13. D 14. C 15. C

【答案】Looking at the lady at the supermarket checkout, I knew perhaps it was the proper time. I went back home and packed some clothes in a bag with other donations and headed to the supermarket. Standing in the supermarket checkout and looking at the woman who was so similar to my former self, I felt compelled to say, “Hi.” She smiled. Without hesitation, I repeated words similar to what the kind neighbour had said to me many years ago at my workplace. “I have a bag of clothes in my car that I was going to donate. Would you like to take a look ”
To my surprise, she said, “Yes.” Together, we walked to my car. She didn’t appear as embarrassed as I had been worried about. I felt a bit relieved. When we reached the car, she went through the clothes and picked up a purple coat with three brightly painted lemons. “My daughter will love this coat. Thank you.” She smiled as her eyes lit up. My heart was full as I thought about what a blessing that coat had been. And how it would make another little girl happy.
