A
Matt Haig, the best-selling author of the novel “The Midnight”, recommends some books that offer wisdom or comfort in difficult times.
Letters to a Young Poet by Rainer Rilke (1929). This is the ultimate comfort read. The book is what the title suggests: letters from an older poet to a younger one. The great thing about Rilke’s advice is that it acknowledges the darkness and suffering of existence, yet manages despite that—or maybe even because of that—to inspire.
When Things Fall Apart by Pema Ch dr n(1996). I read this book during the first lockdown, and it was the perfect read for uncertain times. Ch dr n is a Buddhist, but the advice and philosophy in these relatively few pages speaks universally. It’s a great book about embracing life in its totality, about seeing hope and suffering as part of a whole.
The House at Pooh Corner by A.A. Milne(1928). The Winnie-the-Pooh stories really speak to people going through tough times. In many ways, each of the characters reflects a different mental state: Eeyore is depressed, Tigger is hyper-active, Piglet is anxious, and Pooh reflects a hope and optimism much needed in recovery. I reread this book when I was ill with a panic disorder, and it soothed me.
Bird by Bird by Anne Lamott (1994). In my opinion, this is the greatest book about writing ever written. But like Rilke, Lamott is offering far more than writing advice. She is offering wisdom on life and how to embrace its imperfect nature.

One day in elementary school, a friend asked me “What are you eating ” as she glanced at my lunchbox. “It smells,” she said, nose crinkled.
I was eating bhindi roti, my favorite Indian snack, which my mom had packed for me. But feeling embarrassed for having a “smelly” lunch and wanting to fit in, I quietly shut my lunchbox. That day, I went hungry.
Most days after that, lunchtime at school felt like a battle. If I wasn’t trying to hide my lunch or sneak quick bites when no one was looking, I’d insist on bringing in the same peanut-butter-and-jelly sandwich as the other kids. My mom, who didn’t grow up eating American food, tried her best, but the sandwiches never looked, or tasted, as good as the food I devoured(津津有味地吃) at home.
I didn’t know that I wasn’t alone. Many kids with immigrant parents encounter(遭遇) what’s known as “the lunchbox moment” at school: the experience of being judged for bringing in food considered culturally different and so being made to feel like an outsider.
For this article, I talked with kids who could relate. But they also surprised me:They dealt with “the lunchbox moment” differently than I did. For example, Satya Singh, 6, who takes her mom’s Indian cooking to lunch most days, told me that one day a classmate said that her aloo, or potatoes, looked like poop. Another time, someone said that the dal, or lentils, looked like “throw up”. The next day, Satya brought enough dal to share with her entire class — and they loved it. From then on, she says, “My teacher at school made a rule: Don’t yuck someone’s yum.”
Looking back, I wish I’d had the wisdom of Satya and offered my friend a bite of my lunch, or just told her it was delicious — especially because now, as an adult, I see that Indian food is universally loved by my friends. Some even try to cook Indian lentils or chickpeas at home! And when I’m hungry, guess what I miss my mom’s bhindi roti and her care in making it for me. Food is an expression of culture, tradition, family and love. And that’s something to celebrate, not hide.
4. Why did the writer go hungry one day in elementary school
A. She didn’t like her smelly lunch. B. Her classmates ate up her bhindi roti.
C. Her mom didn’t prepare lunch for her. D. She skipped her lunch to fit in with others.
5. What can we infer about the writer according to the passage
A. She enjoyed the lunchtime at school.
B. Her parents are immigrants from India.
C. She liked peanut- butter-and-jelly sandwich best.
D. She would bite her bhindi roti quickly when someone was looking.
6. How did Satya deal with “the lunchbox moment”
A. She threw away her lunch box.
B. She asked her teacher to make a rule.
C. She ate American food instead of her mom’s Indian cooking.
D. She brought more Indian cooking to share with her classmates.
7. What does the author want to tell us
A. Food is something to celebrate, not hide.
B. Never should you yuck someone’s yum in any case.
C. Indian food is delicious and universally appreciated.
D. The lunchbox moment is when one can taste different foods.

While riding hard on a bike, do you feel like you are saving the planet Or do you just feel out of breath In fact, cycling is now considered one of the best weapons mankind can use in the fight against climate change.
The United Nations General Assembly passed a resolution (决议) in March supporting bicycles as a tool for dealing with climate change. The resolution calls on member states to “add the bicycle to public transportation, in the city and countryside, in developing and developed countries”, with all 193 members of the UN agreeing upon the resolution.
The decision has received positive comments from different groups in support of cycling and the environmental awareness internationally. “It’s an important step toward the recognition of cycling as an important means of transport,” said the European Cyclists Federation.
The resolution from the UN comes at a time when climate change has returned to the center of the world’s attention. On February 28, the UN published a new report assessing (评估) recent climate change trends (趋势). The report warns that the world’s average temperature will rise by 1.5 C above pre-industrial levels (1850-1900), with more than 40% of the world’s population being “easily affected” to these temperature changes.
Cycling is an environmentally friendly means of transport. Choosing to take a bike instead of a car just once a day can reduce a person’s carbon emission (碳排放) from transport by 67 percent, according to a research by the University of Oxford. The research also found that cyclists produced 84 percent lower CO 2 emissions from all daily travel than non-cyclists.
Cycling has grown in popularity as people who take public transport to work wish to stay away from crowded public transport and also like taking any opportunity to exercise. Cycling culture has been further encouraged with the influence of COVID-19. In May 2020, bike sales in Spain increased 22 times compared with 2019. In London, large parts of the city are being closed off to cars so that people can walk and cycle safely.
More importantly, the resolution focuses on bike-sharing services, which could be seen as recognition of China’s bike-sharing success, noted CGTN. China has some of the largest bike-sharing systems in the world. This means of transport that produces zero emissions reduces the amount of CO2 sent out into the atmosphere (大气层) by 4.8 million tons every year, according to a 2020 report from the World Resources Institute.
8. What is the resolution aimed at
A. Winning all member states’ support.
B. Making bicycles part of public transport.
C Dealing with the problem of climate change.
D. Making people healthier and more athletic.
9. What leads to the popularity of the resolution according to the text
A. The whole world’s attention on climate change.
B. Cycling is encouraged in numerous countries.
C. China’s success in Bike-sharing systems.
D. More people wish to exercise more.
10. Why is cycling considered the best weapon against climate change
A. It get people to exercise and stay healthy.
B. It can largely reduce our carbon footprint.
C It can reduce the influence of the COVID-19.
D. It helps us stay away from crowded public transport.
11. What would be the best title for the text
A. Cycling to improve health B. Cycling to a climate solution
C. Why is cycling so important D. A new resolution by the UN
D
Perhaps you think you could easily add to your happiness with more money. Strange as it may seem, if you're unsatisfied, the issue is not a lack of means to meet your desires but a lack of desires — not that you cannot satisfy your tastes but that you don't have enough tastes.
Real riches consist of well-developed and hearty capacities (能力) to enjoy life. Most people are already swamped (淹没) with things. They eat, wear, go and talk too much. They live in too big a house with too many rooms, yet their house of life is a hut.
Your house of life ought to be a mansion (豪宅) , a royal palace. Every new taste, every additional interest, every fresh enthusiasm adds a room. Here are several rooms your house of life should have.
Art should be a desire for you to develop simply because the world is full of beautiful things. If you only understood how to enjoy them and feed your spirit on them, they would make you as happy as to find plenty of hamburgers and eggs when you're hungry.
Literature, classic literature, is a beautiful, richly furnished room where you might find many an hour of rest and refreshment. To gain that love would go toward making you a rich person, for a rich person is not someone who has a library but who likes a library.
Music like Mozart's and Bach's shouldn't be absent. Real riches are of the spirit. And when you've brought that spirit up to where classical music feeds it and makes you a little drunk, you have increased your thrills and bettered them. And life is a matter of thrills.
Sports, without which you remain poor, mean a lot in life. No matter who you are, you would be more human, and your house of life would be better supported against the bad days, if you could, and did, played a bit.
Whatever rooms you might add to your house of life, the secret of enjoying life is to keep adding.
12. The author intends to tell us that____________.
A. true happiness lies in achieving wealth by fair means
B. big houses are people's most valued possessions
C. big houses can in a sense bring richness of life
D. true happiness comes from spiritual riches
13. The underlined sentence in the second paragraph probably implies that______.
A. however materially rich, they never seem to be satisfied
B. however materially rich, they remain spiritually poor
C. though their house is big they prefer a simple life
D. though their house is big, it seems to be a cage
14. It can be learned from the passage that __________.
A. more money brings more happiness
B. art is needed to make your house beautiful
C. literature can enrich your spiritual life
D. sports contribute mainly to your physical fitness
15. What would be the best title for the passage
A. House of Life B. Secret of Wealth
C. Rest and Refreshment D. Interest and Enthusiasm

根据短文内容,从短文后的选项中选出能填入空白处的最佳选项,选项中有两项为多余选项。
Can you recognize the moment when you realize you’ve mastered a foreign language It’s not when you get a perfect grade on a grammar test. It’s when you start thinking in that language! ____16____ . Here are some tips that will help you achieve the goal.
Stop the Translating Habit
Don’t try to say something after thinking of a sentence word by word in your own language, and then translating it into foreign words. It’s of little use because the logical(合乎逻辑的) flow of words in your mother tongue won’t sound well in a foreign language. When you’re thinking of something to say, start with the main parts of the sentence: the subject and the verb. ____17____.
Learn Words in Pairs
It’s easier to learn the words when you add them into context(语境), and you connect them with one another. If, for example, you’re learning the word morning in a foreign language, you should also look up for words that go with it, such as good or early. You should also pair it with the opposites and check out some words that have similar meaning. ____18____.
Pay Attention to Grammar
Vocabulary is very important when you’re learning a foreign language, but that doesn’t mean you should forget all about the grammar rules. You can’t start thinking in a non-native(非母语的) language if you haven’t mastered its grammar basics. Make sure to put the rules you learn into practice every single day, and keep track of your progress.
Practice Writing
A writing practice will help you keep track of your progress but it will also help you remember the things you’ve learned. ____19____. Make sure you use proper grammar. This practice will not only make you a more confident speaker, but it will also help you start thinking in a foreign language.
Practice Speaking and Listening
That’s the final tip that leads you to perfection. Turn speaking and listening into a daily activity. You can listen to audiobooks(有声读物) in the foreign language, and then talk to someone about the impressions. If you don’t have anyone to talk to, just get in an empty room, record your speech and listen to it. ____20____.
A. You’ll surely recognize the signs of progress.
B. That’s the best way to build up a huge vocabulary.
C. You will find yourself better at understanding them.
D. Try to notice and correct the mistakes in your writing.
E. Then, it will be easy for you to build your sentence upon that.
F. Remembering good sentences will go a long way towards writing a good article.
G. And it takes hard work for your inner thoughts to start flowing in a language that’s not native.

Living in a quiet and warm community with her parents, Callie was very interested in various volunteer activities in the community, and almost no one in the community didn’t know her.
On a sunny afternoon, Callie was reading a poem when she heard a soft knock. She stood up at once and opened the door. Her favourite neighbor, Mrs. Baker, stood outside the door.
“I need your help, Callie,” Mrs. Baker said, “and do you know the empty lot (场地) down the street ” Callie nodded, smiling. “The place is a mess, covered with trash. The city is letting us use the lot as a community garden, “she explained.” We need help to clean up the lot on Saturday. “Sure, Mrs. Baker!” Callie said cheerfully. “I just have nothing to do this Saturday. I will be happy to help you!” Mrs. Baker looked pleased and said, “Thanks, Callie. We want to get the garden planted before summer. By then, adults and children in our community will have had a good place to go.”
At school the next morning, Callie’s close friend Tamara was waiting for her by their classroom, who had a surprise for her. Tamara said, “My mom bought tickets to Fun World this Saturday. She has an extra one for you!” The girls had been waiting for months for the amusement park (游乐场) to reopen.
Callie sighed and worried over how to choose for the rest of the day. Her mother noticed her mood (情绪) when she arrived home. “Did something go wrong at school ” her mother asked.
Callie explained her problem. “What should I do, Mom ” Callie asked. “I know you want to go with Tamara and also want to help Mrs. Baker. Think carefully about your choice, and you need to make your own decision. But I know you will do what is best,” her mother answered.

A. Winning all member states’ support.
B. Making bicycles part of public transport.
C. Dealing with the problem of climate change.
D. Making people healthier and more athletic.
9. What leads to the popularity of the resolution according to the text

A writing practice will help you keep track of your progress, but it will also help you remember the things you’ve learned.

Callie was a high school student. Because of her parents’ business, her family moved from London to Los Angeles, where she grew up.

【答案】Paragraph 1:
Callie spent the evening thinking about her decision. There was no doubt that going to Fun World would be interesting, but on second thoughts, helping clean up the lot should be more meaningful, because people in the community could be provided with a better environment. The next day at school, Callie apologised to Tamara for her not being able to go to the amusement park, which got Tamara down. Tamara thought Callie didn’t attach too much importance to their friendship.
Paragraph 2:
On Saturday, Callie met Mrs. Baker at the empty lot and behind Mrs. Baker stood Tamara. “Hi, Callie,” Mrs. Baker said, “Your mother said you made a difficult choice, and thank you and your friend for helping us today.” “You’re welcome,” Callie said. Tamara smiled at Callie and said, “Knowing you made a promise that you would come to help clean up the lot, I am willing to do it with you. My mom said she would take us to Fun World next weekend.” Callie smiled and hugged Tamara, with tears running down her cheeks (with复合结构).
