Sometimes life puts us in places where we are supposed to be. Whether we were headed that way or not, we just need to make the best of it. Here let’s read three stories.
In 2016, Wanda Dench sent a text to her college-aged grandson inviting him to Thanksgiving dinner. But she got the number wrong and reached Jamal Hinton. When Hinton asked who had sent the message, Wanda sent a picture of herself. “You’re not my grandma,” Jamal texted back, “Can I still get a plate, though ” Wanda replied. “Of course, That’s what grandmas do — feed everyone!” And for six years, Jamal has celebrated Thanksgiving with the Dench family.

When he carried the books to the classroom on his lunch hour, the teacher mistook him for one of the volunteer tutors. “Thank you for coming,” the teacher said, “Isabella is struggling with comprehension and is a grade level behind. Here is a book and her worksheets.” Robert thought, “I have time. I’ll just sit down and help.” Robert, an artist, drew the pictures of words and illustrated their meanings. Isabella was delighted. “I think that’s when the light went on for her,” Robert says, For a full year, Robert tutored Isabella during his lunch hours. Her reading comprehension quickly caught up and then shot past grade level. “Seeing her learn so fast made my day,” Robert says.

In a study conducted to show bottled water’s effect in Barcelona, it was established that it cost more when people used bottled water instead of tap water. The study found that if all people in Barcelona were to use bottled water, it would result in 3,500 times more resources being used than tap water. Research also found that, despite significant investment in cleansing Barcelona’s tap water, most people preferred bottled water. Besides bottled water’s impact on resources, researchers also found it do more harm to nature. They concluded that bottled water’s impact on ecosystems is 1,400 times higher than tap water’s.
As reported, this research is the first of its kind to examine bottled water’s impact in Barcelona. Although the study was only conducted in one city, the results could be copied in other developed countries. In most countries, the cost of tap water is lower than that of bottled water.
According to the study, drinking bottled water in Barcelona almost does not have any health benefit. “Health reasons don’t support the wide use of bottled water. Yes, strictly speaking, drinking tap water is worse for the locals’ health, but when you weigh both, what you gain from bottled water is extremely small. It’s quite obvious that the environmental influence of bottled water is higher compared with that of tap water,” said a researcher.
The researcher says that this study may help change people’s idea about bottled water, and argues that more has to be done in terms of policy. Many people want to use bottled water due to attractive marketing campaigns by bottled water companies. “We could have more education campaigns to make the public aware that the health gains from drinking bottled water are minor compared with the environmental impacts,” said the researcher.
8. What does Paragraph 1 mainly tell us about bottled water
A. Its investment. B. Its wide use. C. Its effect. D. Its consumers.
9. What is the researcher’s attitude towards the wide use of bottled water
A. Positive. B. Worried. C. Uninterested. D. Unknown.
10 What can be inferred from the last paragraph
A. Many people care little about environment.
B. People have wrong ideas about drinking bottled water.
C. The government is responsible for popularity of bottled water.
D. Drinking bottled water has minor effect on the environment.
11 In which part of a newspaper may this text appear
A. Entertainment. B. Education. C. Health. D. Environment.

Sharks are often regarded as cruel animals, hunting alone in the deep sea. But that is increasingly out of step with what scientists are learning about them. Instead, they say, sharks are social creatures who return day after day to a group of the same sharks.
Yannis Papastamatiou’s team studied the sharks living in’ the waters off Palmyra Atoll in the central Pacific Ocean. They put small location transmitters (发射机) on 41 sharks, which allowed them to record the animals’ movements.
After recording the sharks for four years, the researchers found that the same groupings of sharks — from a couple up to as many as 20 — returned to the same parts of the reef (礁) over and over again. They also found that some of the groups stuck together during the study period — longer than earlier studies have observed.
They point out that the sharks don’t cooperatively hunt, but say that as long as the group isn’t too large — which will raise competition — socializing appears to benefit the sharks. And that may be one of the things that leads to sociality in the species.
David Shiffman, who studies shark protection, says he was surprised to learn the sharks stuck together for so long. “Sharks are smart creatures,” Shiffman says. “In addition to knowing where to find food by watching others, some species of sharks can also learn to solve simple puzzles, just by watching other sharks solve them. Given their intelligence and social abilities, perhaps it’s time to drop misunderstandings about sharks.”
As for what to call a group of sharks, the name causes fear: it’s known as a shiver of sharks.
12. What is the main finding of Papastamatiou’s research
A. Sharks cooperate to hunt. B. Sharks form social groups.
C. Sharks hunt alone regularly. D. Sharks take advantage of the reef.
13. What did the researchers use to observe the sharks
A. Group technology. B. Sensing technology.
C. Positioning technology. D. Information technology.
14. How do the sharks benefit from their group members according to Shiffman
A. By following their example. B. By sharing food with each other.
C. By solving problems through cooperation. D. By keeping themselves strong through competition.
15. What is the best title for the text
A. Sharks Are Not Cruel Animals B. See A Shiver of Sharks Calm Down
C. Everyone Needs Friends — Even Sharks D. Large Groups or Small Groups: Which Is Better

One holiday, my cousins and I decided to play a trick on my grandma. We planned to do it —not because we didn't like her. She was the sweetest grandma a kid could ever have, and we really loved her. We decided to play the trick just wanting to have some fun. And at that time, to our mind, it was just a harmless little kids' trick.
Early in the evening of that holiday, we began our trick. We secretly walked up to her doorstep with a can of red paint. Grandma was hard of hearing. So we didn't have to worry about being very quiet. Every time we thought about how funny it would be to see Grandma try to pick up a gift that was just painted on her doorstep, we couldn't stop laughing. It didn't take long to finish painting the gift two red roses. It wasn't very artistic. But for us little farm kids and an old woman with poor eyesight, it would do.
As soon as we were satisfied with the painting, we knocked on the door and ran to hide behind bushes and trees to watch the fun. There was a lot of giggling going on as we waited for Grandma to open the door. When she finally appeared, she stood in the doorway for a minute. She looked into the darkness, with her gray hair pulled back tightly into her usual style, wiping her hands on her usual white apron. And she said, “Who could be knocking at my door this hour of the night ” Hearing it, my stomach and cheeks ached from trying to hold back the laughter. Then she looked down at her doorstep. Even from fifteen meters away, we could see the joy that shone in her eyes when she spotted the red gift at her feet.
“Oh, how wonderful!” she called out happily. “A holiday gift for Grandma! I thought I was going to be forgotten again this year!”
注意:
1.续写词数应为150左右;
Grandma bent down to pick up her gift.

Sharks are often regarded as cruel animals hunting alone in the deep sea.
B 13. C 14. A 15. C

In my view, it is perfectly possible for many species of animals living in zoos or wildlife parks to have a quality of life as high as, or higher than in the wild. ____16____
Firstly, zoos contribute to protection. ____17____ . A species protected in the zoo can reproduce (繁殖) in case of disappearing in the wild. Without these efforts, there would be fewer species alive today. The very fact that endangered species have been saved or reintroduced as a result of living in zoos proves the value of zoos.
Zoos also provide education. While it is true that television programes are becoming more detailed and impressive, they are really nothing compared to a living creature in the flesh. ____18____ . Zoos will hopefully give people a greater appreciation of wildlife, conservation efforts and how they can contribute.
____19____ . If we are to save wild species, we need to know about how key species live, act and react. Being able to do research on animals in zoos where there is less risk can make a real difference to conservation efforts and can provide a knowledge base for helping with protecting wildlife.
In conclusion, zoos are vital not just in terms of protecting animals, ____20____ , as well as educating and informing the general population about these animals.
A. Zoos also offer a knowledge base
B. Zoos also play a key role in research
C. The following is several key purposes zoos serve
D. The number of species is decreasing across the world
E. but as a means of learning about them to aid those still in the wild
F. and working directly to educate conservation workers in other countries
G. However, many children and adults, especially those in cities, will never see a wild animal
C 17. D 18. G 19. B 20. E
空前提到“In my view, it is perfectly possible for many species of animals living in zoos or wildlife parks to have a quality of life as high as, or higher than in the wild.( 在我看来,生活在动物园里或野生动物园里的许多动物完全有可能拥有和野外一样高,甚至高于野外的生活质量。)”
根据下文内容“If we are to save wild species, we need to know about how key species live, act and react. Being able to do research on animals in zoos where there is less risk can make a real difference to conservation efforts and can provide a knowledge base for helping with protecting wildlife.(如果我们要拯救野生物种,我们需要知道关键物种是如何生活、行动和反应的。能够在风险较小的动物园中对动物进行研究,可以对保护工作产生真正的影响,并能为保护野生动物提供知识基础)”可知,此段主要讲述动物园在研究中发挥着关键作用,因此推断B项“动物园也在研究中起重要作用”符合语境。故选B。
【20题详解】
此处为总结句。由上文“In conclusion, zoos are vital not just in terms of protecting animals(总之,动物园不仅在保护动物方面至关重要)”和“as well as educating and informing the general population about these animals(同时也教育和告知大众这些动物的知识)”可知,这里讲述的是动物园的多种好处,且根据“not just … but … ”结构可知,E项“而且是一种了解它们帮助那些仍生活在野外的动物的方式”符合语境,故选E项。

47. 阅读下面材料,根据其内容和所给段落开头语续写两段,使之构成一篇完整的短文。
注意:
1.续写词数应为150左右;

____________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________
At that moment, I regretted playing the trick and wanted to do something to make up for it
____________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________
Para. 1:
Grandma bent down to pick up her gift. This was the moment we had been waiting for. But somehow it wasn’t as much fun as we had expected. Confused, Grandma touched the fresh paint for a moment. She quickly became aware of our kids’ childish trick. Her delight at having been remembered by a sweetheart on Sweetheart’s Day was short-lived. She tried to smile to hide the embarrassment. Then, with as much dignity as she could gather, she turned and walked back into her house, absently wiping the red paint on her clean, white apron.
Para. 2:
At that moment, I regretted playing the trick and wanted to do something to make up for it. Soon an idea occurred to me. I would send a real gift to Grandma on another important holiday that was approaching—Thanksgiving Day. The day after we kids made the trick, I began to prepare for the real gift for Grandma. I saved my pocket money. Using it, I bought roses and snacks Grandma loved, and I put them into a beautiful box. When Thanksgiving Day finally came, I happily marched into Grandma’s house, with the box in my hands.
