Although travelling alone may sound discouraging, solo travel is continuing to rise in popularity. There may be numerous reasons why someone is travelling independently. Here are our top reasons to travel by yourself.
Time for you
Some people say solo travel is the comfort and relaxation of having your very own. However, for those looking for some more adventurous “me-time,” solo tours also typically offer plenty of free time to go it alone. During your time at leisure, you have the freedom to do your own exploration, see the sights you want to see or simply relax and take it easy. With no-one to compromise with, it’s totally up to you.
Meet like-minded people
Solo travel doesn’t mean you have to travel alone. Solo travelers come from all walks of life, but they usually all share the same passion — a desire to see the world! It’s often the people you meet on holiday that are the max highlight of the entire trip and, even though you’re travelling alone, you’ll have amazing memories of the shared experiences you had together with people in your group. Take plenty of pictures to remember forever.
You’ll never be alone
Group travel is ideal for solo travelers as it offers the opportunity to a group of like-minded people, each interested in their chosen destination. Being part of a group provides extra security (especially key for independent female travelers who may feel anxious about being on their own) and for everyone there is the benefit of an expert local guide who is keen to share their knowledge. The guides also accompany you on tours and can offer suggestions on what to see and do in your leisure time to ensure you have an authentic and enjoyable experience.
So, if your friends and family are unable to join you on your dream holiday, don’t let that stop you. Travel Department is delighted to partner with Reader’s Digest and offer their readers an exclusive discount on 2023 & 2024 holidays. To discuss any questions or make a booking simply call 0203 966 0527.

There are many ways in which a person’s body language can give you information about whether they are lying or not.
One of the biggest signs that a person is telling lies is that he avoids eye contact during conversation. He may also touch his face often, covering his mouth with his hand very often. Touching the nose is also said to be a sign of taking others’ attention to cover up lies. A person who is not telling the truth may be trying to make you focus on his actions rather than his words.
When a liar (说谎者) tells lies, his physical expression is often very stiff (僵硬的). If he is smiling as he speaks, only the mouth will move. A real smile naturally causes movement of the mouth, eyes, forehead, cheeks, and jaw.
The liar’s hand, leg and arm movements are toward his own body. He takes up little space. The person’s body language is closed off. Liars do not look relaxed, even though they may be trying to give the impression that they are.
When explaining something, a liar usually feels uncomfortable with pauses (停顿) or silences. The person may speak gently or in disordered words. A very skillful liar is able to speak directly and with confidence. In fact, some salespeople are best at this skill.
If you doubt someone is lying, change the topic of conversation suddenly. The liar will willingly change topics with you and become more relaxed. A person who is telling the truth will generally become confused by this sudden change. Another sign of someone telling a lie is yawning (哈欠) — the person may try and look as relaxed as possible, and yawing and stretching are ways of achieving this.
24. Why do liars often cover their mouths
A. To show their own skill. B. To avoid the mouth’s stiffness.
C. To smile because they feel shy. D. To change the listener’s attention.
25. What does the author think of some salesmen
A. They speak softly. B. They say “by the way”.
C. They speak confidently. D. They are anxious while lying.
26. Which can best describe the liar’s yawning
A. Uncomfortable. B. Relaxing seemingly. C. Worrying. D. Exciting.
27. How does the author mainly develop the topic of the text
A. By giving explanation. B. By listing numbers.
C. By using others’ words. D. By showing results of research.

In 1983, Ski Rixen USA became the first water ski cable park in the United States. Located in Deerfield Beach, Florida, the park offers riders a chance to experience all kinds ofwater sports.
In the past 40 years, Six Rixen USA has welcomed more than 1.5 million visitors. The park was the brainchild of engineer Bruno Rixen. Born in 1931 in Germany, Rixen grewfrustrated with the sport of water skiing, which required pulling by a motor boat.
“He used to wait for four hours in line to do three laps around the lake, ” explained Allan Wlodarczyk, the manager of Ski Rixen USA. He added that riding five minutes and waiting another four hours sparked Rixen’s idea of cable parks. Rather than relying on a boat, Rixen considered his own cable way. He also designed skis and set up a power source.
“The first cable was actually an old farm tractor, ” Wlodarczyk said. “Rixen took the wheels off, attached some ropes to the wheel disks, and started pulling people back and forth around the lake.” Over the years, Rixen improved his design and earned several patents. He opened the world’s first commercial cable water park in 1966 in Benidorm, Spain.
The sport grew from entertainment to international contests. Rixen died in 2020, but his idea has taken hold around the world. Today, there are more than 500 cable water parks on different continents. Typically, the cable tows riders at a speed of about 20 miles per hour.
But for beginners, who can take lessons, the speed is about 15 miles per hour.
Ski Rixen USA also offers riding opportunities and events to people with special needs to ski effortlessly. “We have a specially designed ski, called a sit ski,” Wlodarczyk said. “It’s a larger board with a lot of surface area. The riders are completely seated in the water and don’t actually have to hold onto the rope.”

30. In what way is Rixen the pioneer of the cable water park

Chile (智利) is famous for its many attractions, including Torres del Paine National Park and Easter Island . If you’re planning a visit, be sure to add “Mano del Desierto” or “Hand of the Desert”to your must-see list.
Standing 11 meters tall and made of iron and cement (混凝土), this sculpture (雕像) of a hand emerges (出现) from the sand in the Atacama Desert , which is known as the driest desert in the world outside of polar regions. The sculpture was created by Mario Irarr á zabal in the early 1980s and was financed by a local nonprofit organization called Corporaci ó n Pro Antofagasta. The sculpture is not only famous for its size and design but also for the message it expresses. Many people believe that the hand represents the weakness and helplessness of human beings, as well as their strength and determination to overcome hardships.
If you’re interested in visiting the Hand of the Desert, take Route 26 or 28 from Antofagasta, a port city in northern Chile. The sculpture is located between mile markers 1309 and 1310. The desert’s flatness (平坦) makes it easy to spot the sculpture from far away. But some people mistake it for a mirage (海市蜃楼) caused by tiredness from driving a long way to the sculpture.
Visitors should take precautions (预防措施) before leaving , such as filling their gas tanks , taking plenty of water, and wearing sunscreen. They should also avoid driving too quickly, as many car accidents happen in the desert each year.
For those who are worried about driving alone, working with an agency (机构) like Plan South America is a good option. The founder of the agency, Harry Hastings, said that he always tries to join a visit to the sculpture with guests traveling to the desert.
32. What makes the Hand of the Desert a famous attraction
A. Its material. B. Its location. C. Its designer. D. Its size and design.
33. What can we infer from the third paragraph
A. The sculpture attracts millions of visitors every year.
B Tired travelers often see mirages in the desert.
C. The sculpture can be reached very easily.
D. The sculpture can be seen from far away.
34. What can we know about Harry Hastings from the passage
A. He built the sculpture “Hand of the Desert”.
B. He gave the financial support to the sculpture.
C. His agency can help lonely travelers travel to the desert.
D. He can avoid driving accidents in the desert.
35. Which column does this passage belong to in a newspaper
A Travel. B. Environment. C. Culture. D. Entertainment.

第二节 读后续写(满分25分)
67. 阅读下面短文,根据所给情节进行续写,使之构成一个完整的短文。
“Surprise!” was the first thing I heard when I opened the door. My family and friends were all smiling at me. There were colorful balloons all over the house, a big poster saying “HAPPY BIRTHDAY”, and of course a cake with 16 candles. It was a wonderful feeling. I knew that I had finally turned 16 and I might possibly get the thing I wanted most.
I saw my mom and dad coming towards me with a small box which seemed to be a birthday present. When I opened the box, I couldn’t believe my eyes. I had really gotten a mobile phone! Throwing myself into their arms, I let out a cry of joy, “Thank you! I love you guys!”
“You’re welcome. We knew this was going to make you happy but we didn’t only get you this because you turned sixteen, but also because you are doing well in school. We expect you to keep getting good grades. ”
“Of course, I will.” I said confidently.
As soon as I got to school the next morning, I was showing off my phone and asking everyone for their number. It was cool how I got so many contacts on the first day.
It felt like I didn’t even exist in that class anymore. I wouldn’t pay much attention to the teachers because I was too busy on my phone. However, I didn’t get caught using it.
I am pretty sure that the teacher did notice that I stopped paying attention to her because a week later we took a test and I failed. What was worse, my mom had to sign (签字) the test.
It was hard to show my mom the test paper. She was used to seeing A’s and B’s on my tests. Finally, I showed it to her, and she couldn’t believe it. She was angry but most of all, she was disappointed.

【原文】W: Good morning, everybody. I’m Mary Stone. Today I’m going to share with you my hurricane experience. Well, it was my first hurricane since my family moved here to North Carolina. Before it came, we had continual day warnings of it from the radio, the TV and the newspapers for a week. We had to get everything out of the yard. We didn’t have a basement or a storeroom, so we put the yard furniture and waste containers into the garage. And we bought lots and lots of food and water. We even filled the bath with water. We also checked the flashlights and the small radio in case they couldn’t work. The hurricane was terrible. The rain was so heavy that we couldn’t see out the windows. The wind was about 80 miles an hour and it reached 100 miles an hour at times. It knocked down the power lines and we didn’t have electricity for two days. We were lucky. Only one tree came down in the backyard. I was so scared! Most of the time, I stayed in the bathroom. But my husband was more relaxed. He lit candles and listened to the news on the radio.

【答案】 Realizing the reason for my failure, my parents started to dislike the fact that I had a phone. They said I was like in my little own world all day, playing with my phone instead of communicating with them. They regretted having giving me a phone, which made me not concentrate on study any more. Anyway, they signed the paper at last and I began to reflect on what I had done these days.
The next morning, I went to the teacher’s office. I told the teacher that I realized I was wrong and I would learn to use my phone correctly. My teacher smiled at me gently and said, “Phone is useful, but you should not let it take you away from the rest of the world. As a student, you have the responsibility of focusing your attention on useful things”. I nodded my head with tears running down my face. I promised her that I would make progress in the future. A month later, I was wild with joy when I won first place in the monthly test. I felt proud for myself for making the right choice.
