All he used was his own arms and legs, to cycle, row and walk around the world. His plan before beginning the trip was to climb the six highest mountains on earth. The weather on the mountains was terrible but it didn’t stop him. However, he was only able to climb three of them, not because of his health condition, but for money problems. Erden spent most of his time on the trip in his boat. Being alone on the sea for that much time was not at all easy, but he kept busy by listening to music and studying Spanish. He took dried food with him and had a water machine to make fresh water out of seawater. However, it only worked on sunny days. Erden is sure he will take more trips one day. But at the moment all he wants to do is rest and spend time with his wife Nancy.

Like dogs, wolves can recognize and respond to the voices of familiar humans more than those of strangers, according to a recent study. The research challenges the belief that dogs ability to differentiate human voices is due to selective breeding
Holly Root Gutteridge and colleagues carried out experiments across five zoos and wildlife parks in Spain, involving a total of 24 gray wolves. The team set up speakers and first played the animals the voice of a number of strangers. Then, they played the wolves the voice of their keeper who would say familiar things to them in Spanish, such as “Hey, what’s up, wolves ” The wolves raised their heads, pricked their ears up, and turned toward the speaker. To test that the effect wasn’t accidental, the researchers went back to playing the wolves recordings of strangers and found that they once more lost interest. Finally, to make sure that the wolves truly knew their keepers’ voices, the team mixed things up and had the keepers say a series of unfamiliar phrases. Once more, the results held up.
Root Gutteridge pointed out the significance of wolves being able to differentiate between humans, despite the fact that our species went our separate evolutionary (进化的) ways tens of millions of years ago.
Before this, there had been a limited number of studies on the topic of how animals differentiate between the vocalizations (发声) of other species. Research has shown that our close cousins, gorillas, listen to people, but that was expected.
Given the new finding, “chances are that lots of species are listening to us and getting to know us as individuals,” Root Gutteridge said. “And it’s not all about us. Dogs could be listening to the neighbors’ cats and understanding the difference between one meow or the other. If the abilities are that general, it means that animals might be having a lot more cross- species interactions than we had thought about before.”
24. What established viewpoint does the recent research call into question
A. Dogs are the only animals that can differentiate human voices.
B. Wolves recognize the voices of humans better than dogs.
C Wolves cannot understand human languages.
D. Selective breeding enables dogs to differentiate human voices.
25. How did the researchers test if the wolves truly recognized their keepers’ voices
A. By letting the keepers say unfamiliar phrases in Spanish.
B. By asking strangers to reproduce the keepers’ voices.
C. By playing recordings of strangers speaking familiar phrases.
D. By changing the playback speed of the keepers’ recordings.
26 Why are gorillas mentioned in paragraph 5
A. To stress their close relationship with humans.
B. To offer additional evidence for the recent study.
C. To point out another species that can differentiate voices.
D. To explain how animals’ ability to differentiate humans’ voices developed.
27. What does the last paragraph mainly talk about
A. The focus of the future studies.
B. The limitations of the research.
C. The significance of the research.
D. The uniqueness of the experiments.
D 25. A 26. C 27. C
根据第一段“The research challenges the belief that dogs ability to differentiate human voices is due to selective breeding (选择性繁殖).(这项研究挑战了狗能够区分人类声音的能力是由于选择性繁殖的观点。)”
根据第三段描述的实验过程尤其是最后一句“Finally, to make sure that the wolves truly knew their keepers’ voices, the team mixed things up and had the keepers say a series of unfamiliar phrases.(最后,为了确保狼真的能听懂饲养员的声音,研究小组把东西搞混了,让饲养员说一系列不熟悉的短语。)”
根据倒数第二段“Before this, there had been a limited number of studies on the topic of how animals differentiate between the vocalizations (发声) of other species. Research has shown that our close cousins, gorillas, listen to people, but that was expected.(在此之前,关于动物如何区分其他物种的发声的研究数量有限。研究表明,我们的近亲大猩猩会听人说话,但这是意料之中的。)”可知,后面提到大猩猩会听人说话的例子,是为了列举除了狼之外另一个具有这种能力的物种,故选C。
27题详解】
主旨大意题。根据最后一段“Given the new finding, “chances are that lots of species are listening to us and getting to know us as individuals,” Root Gutteridge said. “And it’s not all about us. Dogs could be listening to the neighbors’ cats and understanding the difference between one meow or the other. If the abilities are that general, it means that animals might be having a lot more cross- species interactions than we had thought about before.”(考虑到这项新发现,“很有可能有很多物种正在倾听我们的声音,并开始了解我们作为个体的存在,”Root Gutteridge说。“这并不全是我们的事。狗可以听邻居的猫叫,并理解猫叫之间的区别。如果这种能力如此普遍,这意味着动物可能比我们以前想象的有更多的跨物种相互作用。”)”可知,最后一段是Root Gutteridge对这一研究发现的评论,指出这项研究让人们对动物的了解更进了一步,因此最后一段主要讲的是研究的意义。故选C。
C
Perhaps you know northern Americans still maintain the habit of celebrating Groundhog Day when a large groundhog (土拨鼠) checks to see its shadow on February 2 and helps to predict when winter will end. But have you ever heard about how a mountain town in North Carolina uses a caterpillar (毛毛虫) known as the Woolly Worm to make similar predictions
According to the folklore (民间传说), the amount of black on the woolly worm in autumn predicts the severity of the upcoming winter. The longer the woolly worm’s black bands (带) are, the longer, colder, snowier, and more severe the winter will be. Similarly, a wider middle brown band is a sign of a milder upcoming winter. The position of the longest dark bands supposedly indicates which part of winter will be coldest or hardest. If the head end of the caterpillar is dark, the beginning of winter will be severe. If the tail end is dark, the end of winter will be cold. In addition, the caterpillar has 13 segments (昆虫的节/段) to its body, which traditional forecasters say correspond to the 13 weeks of winter.
Scientific studies on worm forecasting are rare. American Museum of Natural History entomologist Howard Curran conducted a small trial in 1948. Having heard about the caterpillar folklore, Curran headed to Bear Mountain State Park to collect caterpillars each fall for eight years. He found that if the worms had brown markings on more than a third of their body, winters tended to be milder.
Most scientists view the folklore of caterpillar predictions as just that, folklore. “It’s a wonderful story, but I do think it was a playful trial,” says Joe Boggs, an entomologist at Ohio State University Extension who has studied woolly worms. “Curran was a real scientist. He had tons of papers published, but he never published this one — probably because he knew it wouldn’t stand up to peer review.”
Mike Peters, an entomologist at the University of Massachusetts, doesn’t disagree, but he says there could be a link between the band of a caterpillar and the severity of winter. Peters suggests that the timing of their growth and environmental conditions, such as temperature, moisture levels, and food sources, can impact the appearance of woolly worms, including their size, coloration, and band patterns. By analyzing these characteristics, researchers can potentially infer information about the weather conditions. “The band does say something about a heavy winter,” he says. “The only thing is that it’s telling you about the previous year.”
28. How do people predict the weather through caterpillars
A. By analyzing their living habits.
B. By measuring the change of their size.
C. By calculating the number of their segments.
D. By studying color bands on their bodies.
29. What is Howard Curran’s finding based on
A. His personal observations.
B. An investigation on the locals.
C. Studies by previous scientists.
D. Statistics collected by the museum.
30. What is Joe Boggs’s attitude towards the folklore
A. Positive. B. Indifferent. C. Doubtful. D. Unclear.
31. Which statement might Mike Peters agree with
A. The caterpillar forecasting needs long-term data to support it.
B. The color band of caterpillars can be a mirror of past weather.
C. The cold environment has a great impact on caterpillars’ growth.
D. The caterpillar can help predict the severity of winter accurately.
D 29. A 30. C 31. B
根据第二段中“The longer the woolly worm’s black bands (带) are, the longer, colder, snowier, and more severe the winter will be. Similarly, a wider middle brown band is a sign of a milder upcoming winter.(毛茸茸的蠕虫的黑色带越长,冬天就越长、越冷、越多雪,也就越严酷。同样,更宽的中间棕色带是即将到来的温和冬天的标志)”可知,人们通过研究毛毛虫身体上的色带来预测天气。故选D。
【29题详解】
细节理解题。根据第三段中“Having heard about the caterpillar folklore, Curran headed to Bear Mountain State Park to collect caterpillars each fall for eight years. He found that if the worms had brown markings on more than a third of their body, winters tended to be milder.(听说了毛毛虫的民间传说后,Curran每年秋天都前往Bear Mountain州立公园收集毛毛虫,持续了八年。他发现,如果这些蠕虫身上有超过三分之一的褐色斑纹,冬天就会比较温和)”可知,Howard Curran的发现是基于他自己的观察,故选A。
【30题详解】
推理判断题。根据第四段中“Curran was a real scientist. He had tons of papers published, but he never published this one — probably because he knew it wouldn’t stand up to peer review.(Curran是一位真正的科学家。他发表了大量的论文,但他从未发表过这篇——可能是因为他知道这篇论文经不起同行评议)”可知,Joe Boggs认为Curran不发表关于毛毛虫预测冬天的论文可能是因为Curran知道这经不起同行评议,由此推知Joe Boggs对于这个民间传说持怀疑态度,故选C。
【31题详解】
细节理解题。根据最后一段中“’The band does say something about a heavy winter,’ he says. ‘The only thing is that it’s telling you about the previous year.’(‘色带确实表达了一些关于严冬的东西。’他说。‘唯一的问题是,它告诉你的是前一年的情况。’)”可知,Mike Peters认为毛毛虫身上的色带可以反映过去的天气,故选B。

When James Haskell started playing professional rugby football, technology’ influence was very limited. One of its first and important uses within the game, he says, was just urine testing (尿检). “A lot has changed since then. Now all the players wear GPS heart-rate monitors,” the former England and Wasps ruby union player says. Data and technology have become important parts of a professional sports team and its players’ lives, Haskell says.
But this is only the beginning.
“New 5G will bring a whole set of new devices to the sports industry and the connectivity of supply chains that isn’t possible today,” explains Scott Petty, the chief technology officer of Vodafone UK. Vodafone’s recent research shows 70 per cent of decision-makers in the sports industry believe it is behind other industries in, adopting new technology.
However, things are changing gradually. The research suggests that 76 per cent of sports leaders say new 5G technology will drive innovation within their organizations. According to research, sport is an area where new 5G will have a huge impact. It has the ability to transform the fan experience and help athletes improve their fitness and training programmes. Around 74 per cent of sports leaders believe 5G will help meet rising fan expectations.
Haskell is looking forward to seeing what 5G will enable in the future. Vodafone’s new 5G network was launched (推出) in July. At the launch, two Wasps players demonstrated an innovative use of the tech when they conducted a joint training session, despite being 100 miles apart. At an event in London, Will Rowlands tackled a bag (擒抱摔倒) and almost at the same time, through wearable devices, De Jongh felt the force of the tackle.
Going forwards, Haskell expects that players will be able to quantify (量化) their performance in new ways. The key to this The ability to read real-time data and make training programmes completely personalized.
Haskell says, “This ability will be terrific and you’ll suddenly be able to quantify everything!”
This will be game-changing.
32. What does Haskell say about the early use of technology in rugby football
A. It mainly focused on performance data collecting.
B. It changed his attitude towards rugby football.
C. It excited people’s attention to rugby football.
D. It made an impact only to a small extent.
33. What can we learn from Vodafone’s recent research
A. The sports industry should find a new way to meet fan expectations.
B. The sports industry plays a leading part in adopting new technology.
C. Most sports leaders have a very positive response to new 5G technology.
D. New 5G technology will be widely used in the sports industry very soon.
34. How did the demonstration of Vodafone’s new 5G network turn out
A. It was a real success. B. It raised doubts among players.
C. It made Vodafone world-famous. D. It fell far short of the expectations.
35. What does the underlined word “terrific” in paragraph 7 mean
A. Unnecessary. B. Impressive. C. Unique. D. Impossible.
D 33. C 34. A 35. B

Learn a new language and, at some point, you’ll meet native speakers that have you questioning your language abilities. ____36____ And what’s that slang (俚语) they’re using ! If this sounds all too familiar to you, then welcome! You’ve leveled up to a new stage of language learning best known as the dialect. The differences between a dialect and a language have a number of technicalities and exceptions tied to them. But as a language learner, you’re probably more interested in the practical takeaway.
____37____. We can see how the standard elements of English change across the US, the UK, and even Singapore, where Singlish exists as a hyper-regional dialect of English.
The first thing you’ll notice about each English dialect is the shift in pronunciation. This shift, better known as an accent, is an important element of a dialect. ____38____. Don’t worry too much about this. What’s important is that you’re able to identify differences during conversations and feel comfortable adapting to them.
Studies show that children who primarily speak a dialect are hyper-aware of the differences, and are able to reach reading and writing goals more quickly as a result. ____39____ Learning a dialect, rather than just the standard language, requires a deeper dig into cultural nuances (细微差异) that aren’t lost on native speakers. In short: Learning a dialect shows that you care! It’s an incredible way to connect with new cultural communities in the process.
Before you learn a dialect, you should have a firm grasp of the fundamentals of a “standard” language. That way, you’ll be able to gain meaning through context. ____40____ Movies, music, books, and news are all fantastic ways to pick up on those dialectical nuances.
A. Then, enlarge your exposure.
B. There’re many varieties of English.
C How does their accent sound so different

上文“Learn a new language and, at some point, you’ll meet native speakers that have you questioning your language abilities.(学习一门新语言,在某些时候,你会遇到母语人士,让你质疑自己的语言能力)”说明讲母语人士会让自己质疑自己的语言能力。C项“How does their accent sound so different (他们的口音怎么这么不同 )”和下文“And what’s that slang (俚语) they’re using !(他们用的是什么俚语 !)”
下文“We can see how the standard elements of English change across the US, the UK, and even Singapore, where Singlish exists as a hyper-regional dialect of English.(我们可以看到英语的标准元素在美国、英国甚至新加坡是如何变化的,新加坡式英语是作为一种超区域的英语方言而存在的)”说明英语在美国、英国、新加坡不同地域有所变化,并且还提到新加坡英语是非常有地域特征的英语方言,由此可知本段主要谈论方言和地域的关系。

D项中的“accent ”和上文中“This shift, better known as an accent”相呼应,“isn’t always necessary to a dialect”和下文中的“Don’t worry too much about this”相呼应,说明口音对方言来说并不总是必要的。故选D。
上文“Studies show that children who primarily speak a dialect are hyper-aware of the differences, and are able to reach reading and writing goals more quickly as a result. (研究表明,主要说方言的儿童对差异有高度的意识,因此能够更快地达到阅读和写作目标)”说明了学习方言的好处,就是可以让孩子更快达成阅读和写作目标。空处顺接上文,继续谈论学习方言的好处,E项“方言还可以让你建立更深层次的联系。”符合语境。该项中的also表明了和前文的递进关系。故选E。
【40题详解】
下文“Movies, music, books, and news are all fantastic ways to pick up on those dialectical nuances.(电影、音乐、书籍和新闻都是了解这些辩证细微差别的奇妙方式)”说明了接触语言的方式。 故选A。

C. Wolves cannot understand human languages.
26. Why are gorillas mentioned in paragraph 5

But this is only the beginning
35 What does the underlined word “terrific” in paragraph 7 mean
A. Unnecessary. B. Impressive. C. Unique. D. Impossible.

It was Emily’s turn to tell her class where she went this summer. She stood up proudly.
“This summer I went to Bradley,” Emily announced. “It has a big market there. My mom bought a painting and I got a second-hand skateboard. What an impressive trip it was!”
“That’s not a trip,” Frank shouted loudly to his partner. “It’s only half an hour from here. My dad and I often go to Bradley to buy tools for his repair workshop.”
“Frank, no interrupting,” said Miss Clare, their teacher. “And Bradley has a fine market. I’m glad that Emily shared her experience with us. Go ahead, Emily,” Miss Clare smiled warmly at her, encouraging her to continue.
But not feeling proud of her family’s trip to Bradley any more, Emily just felt embarrassed and dropped her head, saying in a low voice that it was finished. In the hope of not being noticed, the little girl hurriedly back to her desk with a red face.
She listened as Peter talked about his cruise to Greece and Mary’s trip across the Atlantic to Ireland. She also heard about John’s horseback ride through the Great Canyon. It seemed as if everyone but her had taken a big trip over the summer. “I never get to anywhere,” Emily thought to herself. A sense of loss clouded her the whole day.
After school, things went worse. One of the wheels on Emily’s skateboard came loose. Now she couldn’t even skate. Sitting on the sidewalk, Emily tried to fix her wheel but in vain, during which Miss Clare happened to pass by.
She walked up with a smile, asking, “Why are you sitting here ” Emily lowered her head, tears welling up inside her eyes. “Want to talk about it ” Emily nodded, trying to avoid Miss Clare’ eyes.
