Over the last century, engineers all over the world have made efforts to achieve great success in bridge design.
Danyang-Kunshan Grand Bridge
No bridge is as long as the Danyang-Kunshan Grand Bridge in the world. The 164.8-kilometre-longbridge built in 2011 in China operates as part of the Beijing-Shanghai High-Speed Railway. The trip from Ningbo to Jiaxing that previously took 4.5 hours has been reduced to two, thanks to this bridge.
Rio-Niteroi Bridge
Completed in 1974, the Rio-Niteroi Bridge in Brazil is the second-longest bridge in all of Latin America connecting the cities of Rio and Niteroi across the Guanabara Bay. The Rio-Niterói Bridge is technically known as a “box-girder (箱形梁)” bridge, made of special concrete. It receives an astonishing 140,000(or more) vehicles (车辆) per day, making it better known in the world.
Hartland Covered Bridge
The Harland Covered Bridge is the world’s longest covered bridge. The 1,282-foot-long bridge was opened in 1901 and has been on Canada’s list of National Historic Sites since 1980. Although it was at first built without a roof, the bridge was capped with wooden materials during the repairs in 1921.
Jiaozhou Bay Bridge
The newly-built Jiaozhou Bay Bridgo in Chipa was named “world’s longest bridge over water” by Guinness Book of World Records in 2011, a title previously held by the Lake Pontchartrain Causeway. The dispute was settled when the title of “longest continuous bridge over water” was given to the causeway, with the Jiaozhou Bay Bridge receiving the title of “longest bridge over water”

In December 2004, I had just become a professional photographer and was working on a project about communities who live on the sea, known as sea nomads (海上游牧民族). I was living with members of the Chao-Ley tribe (部落) on a small island in southern Thailand. We didn’t share a language and relied on body language to communicate.
I went out to sea with them regularly. One morning, I was due to set out with a group of six Chao-Ley fishermen in a small boat. The sea looked different, with the water totally still.
About 20 minutes after we left and a few miles out in the open sea, one of the fishermen pointed to a small white spot far in the distance. It was getting bigger and bigger very quickly. This was a tsunami (海啸) wave speeding through the ocean.
Usually, the deeper the water, the weaker the wave. But we weren’t out far enough to be safe, nor close enough to shore to make it back in time. We were stuck. I began to feel really scared.
The captain told the six of us where to sit, so we would balance out the boat. My camera was in my backpack. I wanted to capture the scene, but I couldn’t. Any movement would imbalance the boat. Suddenly there was a huge noise. The wave hit the boat, but in a flash the skilled captain managed to swerve (使突然转向) us up and onto the wave. Then the boat moved from the tip of the wave down into safe waters. Our eyes and mouths were wide open, and everyone let out heavy sighs. The captain had saved us all.
Surviving gave me a deep understanding of how important life can be. I’ve been going back to Southeast Asia almost every year since. The photography project has become a thank-you to the people who saved my life. The picture I wanted to take on the boat remains “the one that got away” – I think every photographer has one. But mine changed my life.
4. What happened before the author set out with the fishermen
A. The captain wanted to cancel the trip.
B. He noticed something unusual.
C. They saw a white spot in the distance.
D. It looked like it was about to rain.
5. When did the author start to feel frightened
A. When fishermen on the boat felt nervous.
B. When he realized they were trapped.
C. When the boat was about to be hit.
D. When the boat shook violently.
6. What was the author doing when the tsunami wave hit the boat
A. Helping the captain swerve.
B. Taking a photo of the wave.
C. Trying not to move.
D. Reaching for his backpack.
7. What did the author learn from his experience
A. We should have the courage to take risks.
B. Opportunity never knocks twice.
C. Life is too short to be wasted.
D. Sometimes regrets in life can save us.
【答案】4. B 5. B 6. C 7. D

Art and science may seem like opposite things. One means the creative flow of ideas and the other means cold, hard data (数据)—some people believe. In fact, the two have much in common. Now, a study finds art can help students remember better what they learned in science class.
Mariale Hardiman, an education specialist at Johns Hopkins University, noticed that students who used art in the classroom listened more carefully. They might ask more questions. They might volunteer more ideas. What’s more, students seemed to remember more of what they had been taught when their science lessons included art. To prove that, Hardiman teamed up with some researchers and six local schools.
In the experiment, the researchers worked with teachers in 16 fifth-grade classrooms. They provided traditional science lessons and art-focused ones. In the art-focused ones, they might sing the information instead.
The team randomly (随机地) divided the 350 students into either a traditional science classroom or an art-focused one. Students then learned science using that way for the whole unit —about three weeks. When they changed to a new topic, they also changed to the other type of class. This way, each student had both an art-focused class and a traditional one. Every unit was taught in both ways, to different groups of students. This enabled the researchers to see how students did in both types of classes.
The team found that students who started off in traditional classes performed better after they moved into an art-focused class. But those who started in an art-focused class did well even when they went back to a traditional science class. These students appeared to use some of the art techniques (技巧) after going back to a traditional class. Classroom teachers reported that many students continued to sing the songs that they learned after finishing the unit. “The more we hear something, the more we retain it,” Hardiman says. “It suggests that the arts may help students apply creative ways of learning on their own.”
8. What is the purpose of the study
A. To offer great ways to teach art lessons.
B. To find a way to help students learn better.
C. To see if art and science have a lot in common.
D. To prove art might be useful for science learning.
9. What were the students required to do in the experiment
A. Take two types of classes. B. Learn three units in total.
C. Learn two topics for three weeks. D. Choose what they would like to learn.
10. What does the underlined word “retain” in the last paragraph mean
A. Improve. B. Express. C. Remember. D. Finish.
11. What is the text type
A. A research report. B. A book review.
C. A short story. D. An art introduction.
【答案】8. D 9. A 10. C 11. A

Scientists have solved a puzzle about modern humans, after research showed that a famous skull of a human ancestor found in South Africa is a million years older than experts thought. This discovery has changed what we know of human history.
The skull, which scientists have named “Mrs Ples”, is from an ape-like human relative from a species called Australopithecus africanus (南方古猿). It was found near Johannesburg in 1947 and, based on evidence from its surroundings, was thought to be between 2. 1 and 2. 6 million years old. This puzzled scientists, because although Mrs Ples looks like a possible early ancestor of early humans, the first true humans had already evolved by the time she apparently lived. For this reason, scientists had decided that Australopithecus afarensis, a similar species from East Africa that lived about 3.5 million years ago, was our most likely ancestor instead.
To get a more accurate age for Mrs Ples, a team led by Professor Darryl Granger of Purdue University in Indiana, US, used a new method to date the sandy rocks where the skull lay. They measured the amount of certain chemicals in rocks, which form at a steady rate when they are exposed to cosmic rays (宇宙射线) on Earth’s surface. Once rocks are buried, these chemicals stop forming and slowly disappear;the surviving amount reveals how much time has passed since the rock (or bones) were on the surface.
The new study shows that Mrs Ples and other australopithecine bones nearby are between 3.4 and 3.7 million years old. This means they lived at the same time as their East African relatives, so that either group could have given rise to modern humans. However, team member Dr Laurent Bruxelles pointed out that over millions of years, at only 2,500 miles away, these groups had plenty of time to travel and to breed with each other. In other words, the groups could quite easily have met, had children together and both been part of the history of modern humans.
12. What can we learn about Mrs Ples from the first two paragraphs
A. It is a skull found in East Africa.
B. It is the most possible ancestor of humans.
C. It is a million years older than scientists expected.
D. It is proved to live between 2.1 and 2.6 million years ago.
13. How did scientists get the accurate age of “Mrs Ples”
A. By studying the effect of cosmic rays.
B. By calculating the forming rate of chemicals.
C. By locating the sandy rocks where the skull lay.
D. By measuring the surviving amount of chemicals.
14. What can we infer from the new study
A. Modern humans came into being in East Africa.
B Mrs Ples travelled and had children with East African relatives.
C. The history of modern humans might begin 3.5 million years ago.
D. Ape-like species from Africa could have interacted with each other.
15. Which of the following can be the best title of the passage
A. Historical Puzzle Unsolved B. Ancestor Mystery Solved
C. Mrs Ples: The Earliest Human Being D. Mrs Ples: A Famous Skull
【答案】12. C 13. D 14. D 15. B

It was summer, and my dad wanted to treat me to a vacation like never before. He decided to take me on a trip to the Wild West. We took a plane to Albuquerque, a big city in the state of New Mexico. We reached Albuquerque in the late afternoon. Upon Paul, my dad’s friend, picked us up from the airport and drove us up to his farm in Pecos.
His wife Tina cooked us a delicious dinner and we got to know his sons Ryan and Kyle. My dad and I spent the night in the guestroom of the farm house listening to the frogs and water rolling down the river nearby. Very early in the morning, Uncle Paul woke us up to have breakfast. “The day starts at dawn on my farm,” he said. After breakfast, I went to help Aunt Tina feed the chickens, while my dad went with Uncle Paul to take the sheep out to graze (吃草). I was impressed to see my dad and Uncle Paul riding horses. They looked really cool.
In the afternoon, I asked Uncle Paul if I could take a horse ride, and he said yes, as long as my dad went with me. I wasn’t going to take a horse ride by myself anyway. So, my dad and I put on our new cowboy hats, got on our horses, and headed slowly towards the mountains. “Don’t be late for supper,” Uncle Paul cried, “and keep to the track (足迹;踪迹) so that you don’t get lost!” “OK!” my dad cried back. After a while Uncle Paul and his farm house were out of sight. It was so peaceful and quiet and the colors of the brown rocks, the deep green pine (松树) trees, and the late afternoon sun mixed to create a magic scene. It looked like a beautiful woven (编织的) blanket spread out upon the ground just for us.

【答案】Paragraph 1
Suddenly a little rabbit jumped out in front of my horse. Dad and I found it was so cute that we decided to run after it. After a while, we were completely lost in the forest. There was nothing left in our sight but the trees. “We may not be able to make it back to the farm house in time for supper.” I thought to myself. After a series of useless attempts to find a way out, we felt hungry and tired.
Paragraph 2
We had no idea where we were and it was getting dark. We got stuck in the forest. And an unexpected shower added to the difficulty of us in finding a way home for all the tracks we had made disappeared because of the rain. I was almost breaking down when my father said, “Don’t worry, my son. I remember there is a river near the farm house. Find the river and we will be back home.” Finally, we found the river and got back to the house along it. Needless to say, we ate a late dinner.

A. The captain wanted to cancel the trip.
B. He noticed something unusual.
C. They saw a white spot in the distance.

C
Art and science may seem like opposite things. One means the creative flow of ideas, and the other means cold, hard data (数据)—some people believe.
A Take two types of classes. B. Learn three units in total.

B. Mrs Ples travelled and had children with East African relatives.

52. 阅读下面短文,根据所给情节进行续写,使之构成一个完整的故事。
