Michael and his wife, new residents in a San Francisco apartment, learned about their neighbor Jeff Dunan’s volunteer work for Bangladesh Relief, an organization that provides food, clothing and essential supplies for disadvantaged people in northern Bangladesh. Inspired, Michael donated $150 to Dunan’s GoFundMe campaign. However, a credit card notification alerted him to an unintended $15,041 charge.
When he saw the five-figure number, he was confused. Soon, it all made sense. Michael’s credit card number started with four and one. Clearly, he accidentally began typing his credit card information while his cursor (光标) was still in the donation box.
Michael planned to call Dunan to explain, but before he had the chance to do that, he started receiving Facebook messages from Shohag Chandra, the charity’s Bangladesh-based program manager, thanking him for his generous donation. After he looked through the photos of people holding thank-you signs that read his name, Michael’s heart sank. He felt terrible that he had to withdraw his handsome donation. Once his original contribution was refunded, he decided to donate $1,500.
Although Michael had told his family and friends about the tale, he decided to share it publicly on social media, after Dunan told him the organization was desperately in need of funds. “The least I could do was take the time to post this story online and see if I could inspire other people to donate to the cause,” Michael said.
Little did he know, though, that the story would be seen far and wide, ending up raising more than $120,000 for Bangladesh Relief in the span of only a few weeks—about eight times Michael’s mistaken donation. According to Dunan, more than 3,700 people have contributed because of Michael’s post. Michael has been stunned (震惊) by the ongoing outpouring of support. “Never in my wildest dreams did I imagine this reaction,” he said. “People can be amazing when they come together for something like this.”
4. How did Michael make the large donation
A. He input an incorrect amount. B. He encountered a system error.
C. He was greatly inspired by Dunan. D. He entered wrong credit card details.
5 Why did Michael’s heart sink according to Paragraph 3
A. He saw people in despair. B. He failed to offer enough money.
C. He didn’t receive the full refund. D. He realized the scale of his mistake.
6. What motivated Michael to share the story on social media
A. Dunan’s request for publicity. B. A desire for personal recognition.
C. The organization’s urgent need for funds. D. Pressure from his family and friends.
7. What message does the story convey
A. Actions speak louder than words. B. Many hands make light work.
C. Always prepare for a rainy day. D. A good beginning is half of victory.
A 5. D 6. C 7. B
根据第二段“Michael’s credit card number started with four and one. Clearly, he accidentally began typing his credit card information while his cursor (光标) was still in the donation box. (迈克尔的信用卡号码是以4加1开头的。很明显,当他的光标还在捐款箱里时,他不小心开始输入他的信用卡信息。)”可知,迈克尔捐了一大笔钱,因为他输入的金额不正确。故选A。
根据第三段“Michael planned to call Dunan to explain, but before he had the chance to do that, he started receiving Facebook messages from Shohag Chandra, the charity’s Bangladesh-based program manager, thanking him’ for his generous donation. After he looked through the photos of people holding thank-you signs that read his name, Michael’s heart sank. He felt terrible that he had to withdraw his handsome donation. Once his original contribution was refunded, he decided to donate $1,500.
根据第四段“Although Michael had told his family and friends about the tale, he decided to share it publicly on social media, after Dunan told him the organization was desperately in need of funds. (虽然迈克尔已经告诉了他的家人和朋友这个故事,但在杜南告诉他该组织急需资金后,他决定在社交媒体上公开分享。)”可知,迈克尔是在杜南告诉了他这个团体急需资金之后决定在网上分享这件事的。故选C。
【7题详解】
推理判断题。通读全文,并结合最后一段的“Little did he know, though, that the story would be seen far and wide, ending up raising more than $120,000 for Bangladesh Relief in the span of only a few weeks—about eight times Michael’s mistaken donation. According to Dunan, more than 3,700 people have contributed because of Michael’s post. Michael has been stunned ( 震惊) by the ongoing outpouring of support. “Never in my wildest dreams did I imagine this reaction,” he said. “People can be amazing when they come together for something like this.”(然而,他并不知道,这个故事会被广泛传播,最终在短短几周内为孟加拉国救济组织筹集了12万多美元——大约是迈克尔错误捐款的8倍。 A. Actions speak louder than words.(行动胜于言语);B. Many hands make light work. Always prepare for a rainy day. (未雨绸缪);D.A good beginning is half of victory.

When ancient Egyptians put pen to paper—or, more accurately, ink to papyrus (纸莎草纸) —they took steps to ensure that their words would last forever, a new study suggests. Researchers from the University of Copenhagen have found that ancient scribes (抄写员) likely added lead to their inks to help their writing dry. More than 1,000 years later, reports Cosmos Magazine, 15th-century European artists employed lead as well. According to the London National Gallery, lead-based pigments found in many Old Master paintings are “known to aid the drying of paint films.”
According to a statement from the University of Copenhagen, the study’s authors analyzed 12 papyrus pieces dating back to between 100 and 200 C.E., when Egypt was under Roman control. The team used X-ray microscope to determine the raw materials used in different inks, as well as the chemical structure of the dried ink attached to the ancient paper. Ancient Egyptians began writing with ink—made by burning wood or oil and mixing the resulting material with water—around 3200 B.C. Typically, scribes used black, carbon-based ink for the body of text and reserved red ink for headings and other key words in the text. Though black and red inks were most common, shades of blue, green, white and yellow also appeared in ancient texts.
The researchers write that the Egyptians created red inks with iron-based combinations—most likely natural earth pigments. The team also identified the presence of lead. They were bowled over that there was no lead white or other combinations that would typically be present in a lead-based pigment. Instead, the ancient ink’s lead pigments appeared to wrap around the papyrus cell walls and iron particles (微粒). The resulting effect looked “as if the letters were outlined” in lead. This finding indicates that the ancient Egyptians invented a system of adding lead to red and black inks specifically for the purpose of sticking the words to paper.
The 12 analyzed papyrus pieces are part of the University of Copenhagen’s Papyrus Carlsberg Collection. The documents originated in Tebtunis, the only large-scale institutional library known to have survived from ancient Egyptian times.
8. What is the main function of lead in the masterpieces of the ancients
A. To make the colors brighter. B. To stick the ink to the pen.
C. To help the writing dry. D. To increase their thickness.
9. What can be inferred from the statement
A. It was easy for X-ray microscope to detect the raw materials.
B. Only wet inks can be used to determine their chemical components.
C. Ancient Egyptians already knew black could catch eyes easily.
D. The inks used by the ancient Egyptians came in a variety of colors.
10. What do the underlined words mean
A. Amazed. B. Concerned. C. Angry. D. Worried.
11. How did the ancient Egyptians make words stay on paper for a long time according to Paragraph 3
A. By combining several kinds of colors.
B. By adding lead to red and black inks.
C. By breaking the structure of the colors.
D. By analyzing the elements of the paper.
C 9. D 10. A 11. B

根据第一段的“ancient scribes (抄写员) likely added lead to their inks to help their writing dry(古代抄写员可能会在墨水中加入铅,以帮助字迹变干)”和“15th-century European artists employed lead as well(15世纪的欧洲艺术家也使用铅)”以及“lead-based pigments found in many Old Master paintings are “known to aid the drying of paint films.(在许多古代大师的画作中发现的铅基颜料有助于漆膜的干燥。)”可知,铅在古人杰作中的主要作用是帮助字迹变干。故选C。
【9题详解】
推理判断题。根据第二段的“Though black and red inks were most common, shades of blue, green, white and yellow also appeared in ancient texts.(虽然黑色和红色的墨水是最常见的,但蓝色、绿色、白色和黄色的色调也出现在古代文本中。)”
根据第三段“there was no lead white or other combinations that would typically be present in a lead-based pigment. Instead, the ancient ink’s lead pigments appeared to wrap around the papyrus cell walls and iron particles (微粒). The resulting effect looked “as if the letters were outlined” in lead.(没有铅白或其他通常存在于铅基颜料中混合物。相反,古代墨水的铅颜料似乎包裹在纸莎草细胞壁和铁颗粒上。最终的效果看起来“好像字母是用铅笔画出来的”。)”可推知,没有铅白色或其他通常存在于铅基颜料中的混合物,这让他们很震惊,划线词bowled over意为“惊讶的”,和Amazed的意思相近。故选A。
根据第三段的“This finding indicates that the ancient Egyptians invented a system of adding lead to red and black inks specifically for the purpose of sticking the words to paper.(这一发现表明,古埃及人发明了一种向红色和黑色墨水中添加铅的系统,专门用于将单词粘在纸上。)”
D
Research has found that using wood for construction instead of concrete and steel can reduce emissions. But Tim Searchinger at Princeton University says many of these studies are based on the false foundation that harvesting wood is carbon neutral (碳中和). “Only a small percentage of the wood gets into a timber (木料) product, and a part of that gets into a timber product that can replace concrete and steel in a building,” he says. Efficiencies vary in different countries, but large amounts of a harvested tree are left to be divided into parts, used in short-lived products like paper or burned for energy, all of which generate emissions.
In a report for the World Resources Institute, Searchinger and his colleagues have modelled how using more wood for construction would affect emissions between 2010 and 2050, accounting for the emissions from harvesting the wood. They considered various types of forests and parts of wood going towards construction. They also factored in the emissions savings from replacing concrete and steel.
Under some circumstances, the researchers found significant emissions reductions. But each case required what they considered an unrealistically high portion of the wood going towards construction, as well as rapid growth only seen in warmer places, like Brazil. In general, they found a large increase in global demand for wood would probably lead to rising emissions for decades. Accounting for emissions in this way, the researchers reported in a related paper that increasing forest harvests between 2010 and 2050 would add emissions equal to roughly 10 percent of total annual emissions.
Ali Amiri at Aalto University in Finland says the report’s conclusions about emissions from rising demand are probably correct, but the story is different for wood we already harvest. “Boosting the efficiency of current harvests and using more wood for longer-lived purposes than paper would cut emissions,” he says. “We cannot just say we should stop using wood.”
12. What is wrong with previous researches according to Searchinger
A. They got wrong statistics. B. They used an incorrect concept.
C. They included too many factors. D. They were applied in limited countries.
13. What does paragraph 2 mainly talk about
A. The process of the new research. B. The background of the new study.
C. The challenge of the new research. D. The achievements of the new study.
14. When will the emissions drop off greatly according to the new study
A. When wood grows slowly.
B. When wood is largely used to make paper.
C. When wood is largely used in construction in countries like Brazil.
D. When wood is largely harvested in countries like Brazil.
15. What is Ali Amiri’s attitude toward the new result
A. Favorable. B. Doubtful. C. Critical. D. Objective.
B 13. A 14. C 15. D
根据第一段“But Tim Searchinger at Princeton University says many of these studies are based on the false foundation that harvesting wood is carbon neutral (碳中和).(但是普林斯顿大学的Tim Searchinger说,许多这样的研究都是基于一个错误的基础,即砍伐木材是碳中和的)”可知,Searchinger认为之前的研究使用了一个不正确的概念。
根据第二段“In a report for the World Resources Institute, Searchinger and his colleagues have modelled how using more wood for construction would affect emissions between 2010 and 2050, accounting for the emissions from harvesting the wood. They considered various types of forests and parts of wood going towards construction. They also factored in the emissions savings from replacing concrete and steel.(在世界资源研究所的一份报告中,Searchinger和他的同事们模拟了2010年至2050年期间,建筑中使用更多木材将如何影响排放,其中包括砍伐木材产生的排放。他们考虑了各种类型的森林和用于建筑的部分木材。他们还考虑了更换混凝土和钢材所节省的排放)”可知,第二段主要介绍新研究的过程。故选A。
根据第三段“Under some circumstances, the researchers found significant emissions reductions. But each case required what they considered an unrealistically high portion of the wood going towards construction, as well as rapid growth only seen in warmer places, like Brazil.(在某些情况下,研究人员发现排放量显著减少。但他们认为,每一种情况下,用于建筑的木材所占比例都高得不切实际,而且只有在巴西等较温暖的地方才会出现这种快速增长)”可知,根据这项新的研究,当木材在像巴西这样的国家大量用于建筑时,排放量会大幅下降。故选C。
【15题详解】
推理判断题。根据最后一段“Ali Amiri at Aalto University in Finland says the report’s conclusions about emissions from rising demand are probably correct, but the story is different for wood we already harvest. “Boosting the efficiency of current harvests and using more wood for longer-lived purposes than paper would cut emissions,” he says. “We cannot just say we should stop using wood.”(芬兰阿尔托大学的Ali Amiri表示,报告中关于需求增长导致排放的结论可能是正确的,但对于我们已经收获的木材来说,情况就不同了。他说:“提高当前收成的效率,将更多的木材用于比纸张更长久的用途,将减少排放。我们不能只是说我们应该停止使用木材。”)”可知,Ali Amiri对此研究结果从正反两方面都进行了说明。由此推知,其态度是客观的。故选D。

Unfortunately, 81-year-old Barney had lost two most beloved people of his life, his wife, and his only daughter, who left her 6-year-old son Tommy in his hands.
Tommy was a bright, talented young boy with a promising future ahead of him. But with insufficient resources, he knew it would be hard to provide Tommy with the way he deserved and dreamed. Barney applied for a job as a pizza deliveryman. It was exhausting, because Barney had to go up and down to different addresses on hot, cold, and rainy days, door-delivering pizzas to customers. Hard though the job was, the pay was not that great.
However, Barney was fueled by the thought that every box of pizza he delivered was money and one step closer to giving his grandson a better life. With the thought of his grandson’s future in his mind, Barney drove to the address that winter morning.
The cold winter air froze everything on its path. With a deep sense of relief, Barney finally arrived at the address. His heart raced at seeing the angry client, a teenage boy named Fabian, on the doorstep.
“What took you so long ” Fabian screamed. Barney observed the teen’s anger and realized he wouldn’t get any tips. However, he was fortunate enough that he was at least able to deliver the pizzas to the client.
Just as Barney made his way up the stairs with the pizza boxes, he fell down on the concrete, hurting his leg. And the 15 boxes of pizza he was holding went everywhere on the ground.
“How did they hire an old man like you Clean up the mess and get out!” Fabian made fun of Barney as he struggled to rise on his feet. To make things worse, Fabian’s friends ganged up cruelly laughing at poor Barney. Barney realized he had broken his leg due to the severe fall. Fabian’s angry words kept ringing in Barney’s head as he lay helpless and painful on the icy ground, crying.
Suddenly, the boy saw his friends running away in different directions. Fabian froze still when he recognized it was his dad, Albert. The gentleman was beyond shocked as his son would throw a party at home when he was supposed to be preparing for his exams.

___________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________
Albert’s blood boiled with anger as he rushed to help Barney. He could not believe his son should be so cruel toward an old man. He immediately called 911 and tried to help Barney stand up, but the poor old man couldn’t stand for long as he was injured. So Albert gathered the ruined pizza boxes and called the pizza shop to inform them of the accident. Soon an ambulance arrived. The man then accompanied Barney to the hospital in the ambulance. He dared not imagine what could have happened if he wasn’t there on time.
Later, Albert tried to teach his son to know the value of hard work and respecting people. Albert explained, “The old man delivered pizzas only to expect his grandson to have a better future. However, you wasted time and money throwing parties when you should be studying. And all he wanted was a small amount of tip from you. What you did was not how you should treat an elderly man.” Having realized his mistake, Fabian lowered his head. Albert then took Fabian to the hospital where Barney stayed. The father and son apologized to Barney for the rude behavior. In addition, Albert paid Barney’s medical bill and gave Barney a large enough tip. Barney couldn’t help but feel grateful for Albert’s kindness.

A. Favorable. B. Doubtful. C. Critical. D. Objective.
