No doubt one of China’s greatest resources is its diverse cuisine. One of the most popular foods to be found is no doubt the street snacks that make up a large part of everyday life. “Compared with A Bite of China, which showcases chefs’ cooking processes and demonstrates delicious cuisine on air, Chinese Barbecue is more down-to-earth in depicting the people,” commented a viewer.
The new documentary series, called Chinese Barbecue, tells the story of this popular food option that sizzles (咝咝作响) over hot coals on just about every street comer in cities and towns across the country. Barbecued meat shining over hot coal containers, while not as elegant as some of the fine dining options in China, is an essential part of people’s night life. The pleasant smell and atmosphere surrounding the grilled (烤的) street food is “something that could entice people to fly downstairs at night,” the documentary claims.
In many Chinese eyes, barbecue, regarded as the most ordinary and common night street snack, is different from homemade food by mothers which is a symbol of kinship (亲切感). Barbecue is where you become connected to people in society. And unlike official business lunches, during which people are rather reserved and polite, barbecue lets people cut loose and relax with old friends and newly made friends, leaving a lasting impression of friendship.
On the other side of the world, in the United States, BBQ, well received by all ages, demonstrates the even more enthusiastic personality of Americans, who grill large steaks on their outdoor stoves at home and enjoy competing to see who has the better cooking skills. It’s safe to say that the world, as a whole, holds deep-rooted good feelings toward barbecue, either for the taste or the warmth generated by fire.

There is one language that is used in every country in the world. The people who use it are young and old, short and tall, thin and fat. It is everybody’s second language. It is easy to understand, although you can’t hear it, it is sign language.
When you wave to a friend who is across the street, you are using sign language. When you smile at someone, you’re saying, “I want to be friendly”, but you are not using speech. You are using sign language. When you raise your hand in class, you are saying, “please ask me, I think I know the correct answer.”
Babies who can’t talk can point at things. They are using sign language. A policeman who wants to stop traffic holds up his hands. He is using sign language.
Many years ago, the French priest, Charles Michel de Epee, became interested in education for deaf people. He invented a finger alphabet (字母表). It is still in use. People can make the sign for letters and spell words with their hands. And the deaf people can read and understand them. Soon there were schools for the deaf in many countries. The only university for the deaf is Gallaudet College in Washington, D.C.
Today, in the United States, there are special TV news programs for deaf people. The newsreader tells the news in sign language. At the same time, the words appeal on the TV screen.
The actors in the Theatre of Deaf don’t spell every word, and sometimes they use hand signs. When they put two hands together, it means sandwich. They make a roof with their hands when they want to show a house. One finger in front of an actor’s mouth can mean quiet. You can talk to people who are behind windows that are closed. And when you go swimming with your friends, you can have conversations under the water.
How many hand signs do you use every day

A wireless charging room can deliver power through the air to any laptop, tablet or phone without the need for plugs or cables.
The new technology involves generating magnetic fields (磁场) over longer distances without also producing electrical fields that would prove harmful to any people or animals within the room, according to the team from the University of Tokyo.
The system, which has been tested in a single room but is still in its initial stage, can deliver up to 50 watts of power without exceeding (超过) current guidelines for human exposure to magnetic fields, the study authors explained. It could be used to charge any device with a wire coil fitted inside, similar to the system used with wireless charging pads currently in use — but without the pad. As well as removing charging cables from desks, it could allow for more devices to be fully robotized without the need for ports, plugs or cables.
To demonstrate the new system, they installed the unique wireless charging equipment in a purpose-built aluminum “test room”. They then used it to power lamps, fans and mobile phones that drew current from anywhere in the room, regardless of where furniture or people had been placed.
Researchers didn’t say what the technology might cost because it is still very early in development and “years away” from being made available to the public. “This really ups the power of computing world — you could put a computer anywhere without ever having to worry about charging or plugging in,” said study coauthor Alanson Sample from the University of Michigan. There are also medical applications, according to Sample, who said heart implants (植入) currently require a wire from the pump to run through the body and into a socket. “This could remove that,” the author said, adding it would act to reduce the risk of infection and improve patients’ quality of life by removing the wire completely.
12. What’s the advantage of the new technology according to the text
A. It has been widely used in many fields.
B. It’s environmentally friendly.
C. The cable is essential in the new technology.
D. It can only be used to charge some devices.
13. What does the underlined word “robotized” in Paragraph 3 mean
A. Antique. B. Contradictory. C. Complex. D. Automatic.
14. What can we infer from this text
A. People can benefit a lot from this technology.
B. The technology takes a lot of investment.
C. All the heart problems can’t be solved without the new technology.
D. The technology never ups the power of the computing world.
15. In which column of the newspaper can you read the passage
A. Geography. B. Culture. C. Science. D. Literature.
【答案】12. B 13. D 14. A 15. C

Janiece Jenkins is a math teacher at East Orange Community Charter School, New Jersey. She had been certified in CPR (心肺复苏术) and first aid, 5 years before working here in the school. Because Janiece had never had a chance to put it into use, she almost forgot it after all those years. Recently, the school arranged for all the teachers to take a refresher course. As in the past, Janiece thought little of the first aid knowledge and she never thought she could put it into practice one day. But it happened that way.
On a hot summer afternoon, 9-year-old Robert Stonaker was preparing for his math class when he felt a rush of thirst. He reached for a bottle of water from his school bag. But the cap of the water bottle was too tight, so he struggled to remove it with his mouth. When the third grader squeezed (挤压) the bottle, the water pushed the cap down his throat and blocked his airway.
Unable to breathe, Robert got out from his seat in panic and ran over to the sink to see if he could spit the cap out himself. When that didn’t work, he ran across the room to ask Janiece for help, pointing to his throat.
The boy couldn’t talk. His face was pale, nd he was struggling to breathe. Janiece knew from the desperation on his face that he was choking and that he was in bad need of help. At the critical moment, timing is everything. Brain damage starts after approximately four minutes without oxygen.
Thanks to the refresher course, the first aid steps were fresh in Janiece’s mind. She stood behind Robert and wrapped her arms around the boy’s waist. With one hand made a fist, she pressed hard and quick into his stomach. She pulled inward and upward as she pressed as if she’s trying to lift the boy off the ground. After several rounds of pulls and presses, the cap of the water bottle popped out of his mouth. Seeing the cap on the floor, Janiece breathed a big sigh of relief.

1.续写词数应为150左右;

________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________
【答案】参考范文:
Then Janiece took Robert to the nearest hospital and telephoned Robert’s parents. Through further examination, the doctor told them everything was OK when Robert’s parents arrived at the hospital. Robert’s parents shook Janiece’s hands and expressed their gratitude to Janiece, without her calmness, quick thinking and timely help, things would have been unimaginable. Robert said that Ms. Jenkins was his new favorite superhero. Janiece felt incredibly thankful for her CPR and first aid training and for her ability to help a student in need.
Janiece hoped her action would inspire others to get the training to help people in need. She began teaching people about CPR and first aid, and created classes about it. She said that people were always thinking that there was somebody more responsible. For example, there was a nurse. But there were also cases where there was no one there. If she weren’t certified, this could have gone the other way. Therefore, she hoped more people could take part in and get the training to help people in need.

1.续写词数应为150左右;
