China’s women’s basketball team was beaten by the United States in the final of the FIBA World Cup in Sydney. The silver medals that the Chinese were left with still represented their country’s best finish in the global showpiece in 28 years. Not since 1994 – in a tournament (锦标赛) held, like this one, in Australia – had they won a medal of any colour.
At the World Cup, China played a total of eight matches, winning six of them. They entered the final of a major international competition for the first time in almost three decades, before losing to defending champions the United States to finish runners-up for the second time in history.
China’s performance at the tournament received much attention from Chinese people both at home and abroad, especially as the final fell on the country’s National Day. Chinese flags were waved and the national anthem (国歌) was sung in the stadium, giving people a feeling that the team was playing on their home court.
Although losing the game, the team was met with praise and encouragement from Chinese netizens as people have walked away from a “medal-oriented” mentality, and started to accept more the spirit of sportsmanship and “perform your best” spirit. Many Chinese netizens said they were proud of the players for trying their best and fighting until the last minutes which showed the true sportsmanship. The mental strength and quality of the Chinese women’s basketball team are even more valuable than being the runner-up in the World Cup, they said. The Chinese women’s basketball team is already the champion in our hearts, commented an internet user.
“We should admit the gap in the strength between the two teams. However, the women basketball players have presented an exciting game, playing good defense and never hesitating to attack. I am so proud of them, and it is special our National Day.” said one Weibo user.

B. The match received amounts of attention globally.

D. Chinese flags and anthem sprang up in the stadium.
7. What is the best title for the text
A. Our country’s National Day. B. Our gratitude to the coach.
C. The FIBA World Cup history. D. A special gift for the National Day.

Some people often wonder whether they are fighting a battle with their genes to maintain a healthy weight. In fact, researchers have provided plenty of evidence that people are born with tendencies to be lighter or heavier. For example, studies of identical twins have revealed great similarity in their overall weight. Part of this similarity may be explained by the finding that some people are born to burn a lot of calories just through ordinary day-to-day activities while others are not. Those who are not are more at risk for weight gain.
Researchers have discovered some of the actual genetic mechanisms (机制) that may make some individuals more likely to be obese (肥胖的). For example, a gene has been found that appears to control signals to the brain that enough fat has been stored in the body in the course of a meal — so the individual should stop eating. The gene influences the production of leptin (瘦蛋白), which keeps appetite under control. If leptin doesn’t work well, it is likely that individuals will continue to eat. Thus the gene that controls leptin appears to have a critical influence on the potential for obesity.
The confirmation that leptin plays a role in weight control has encouraged researchers to identify and understand other weight-related genes. Recent attention has focused on a gene called GAD2. GAD2 helps control the amount of the neurotransmitter (神经递质) GABA. In general, when more GABA is available, appetite is increased. For that reason, people who have a form of GAD2 that allows more GABA to be available may be at risk for overeating. You can see that GAD2 is not directly an obesity gene. Rather it has an indirect influence on obesity through its direct influence on GABA.
Genetic research holds out the promise of innovative solutions to obesity. Researchers hope that an understanding of the link between genus and weight control will enable them to provide new drug treatments. Nonetheless, even the most optimistic researchers provide a warning: “Innovative drugs will be effective only when they are used along with lifestyle changes.”
8. What does the author want to explain by giving the example of twins
A. It is hard to maintain a healthy weight. B. Being fat or thin is genetic ally related
C. The twins are usually of similar weight. D. An individual ‘ body can burn calorie.
9. What can make an individual more likely to put on weight
A. Poor appetite. B. All varieties of GAD2
C. Effective leptin. D. Extra amount of GABA.
10. What do researchers suggest people do
A. Adopt advanced means. B. Learn more about genetic effects.
C. Keep good living habits. D. Change the weight-related gene.
11. What is the text mainly about
A. How does genetics contribute to obesity B. What impact does eating have on weight
C. How many genus determine who is obese D. Why do many people become overweight
D
Jason Allen, a video game designer in Pueblo, Colorado, spent about 80 hours working on his entry to the Colorado State Fair's digital arts competition. Judges awarded him first place, which came with a $300 prize.
Allen's victory took a turn when he revealed online that he'd created his prize-winning art using Midjourney, an artificial intelligence (AI) program that can turn text descriptions into images. He says he also made that clear to state fair officials when he dropped off his submission (提交) called Théátre D'péra Spatial.
Colorado's 150-year-old state fair is held each summer in Pueblo, a town about 185 kilometers south of Denver. The fair's submission guide lines do not directly mention AI-generated art, but they define (定义) digital arts as “artistic practice that uses digital technology as part of the creative or presentation process.”
The competition's two judges say they were unaware that Allen had used AI to create his piece. But even if they had known, they still would've given him first place. They said they awarded the top prize based on the story Théátre D'péra Spatial tells, as well as the spirit it inspires.
Allen created Théátre D'péra Spatial by entering various words and phrased into Midjourney, which then produced more than 900 versions for him to choose from. He selected his three favorite, then continued adjusting them in Photo shop until he was satisfied. He boosted their resolution (分辨率) using a tool called Gigapixel and printed the works on canvas. He entered all three pieces into the competition, and one of them won.
Allen said he believes the criticism of his work originate from artist s' fear that technology will one day become so advanced that they'll be out of jobs.
In the meantime, as state fair spokesperson alga Robak says, it's bringing out “a broader conversation about how we decide what art is, and how we judge it appropriately.”
12. What does the underlined word “that” refer to in paragraph 2
A. Taking a turn. B. Revealing the truth online.
C. Turning text descriptions into images. D. Applying an AI program to the creation.
13. Why did the two judges award alien first place

B. They were unaware of the use of ad in his piece.
C. He is a pioneer of using digital technology in creation.
D. They are impressed with the ideas that his work presents.
14. What is paragraph mainly about
A. How Allen created his works. B. What all technologies alien used.

Kelsey was grateful for everything her mother had done for her. In spite of being raised by her mother alone, Kelsey received a good education, and now held a leading position in a large company.
Recently the company was making corporate brochures (企业手册) in which achievers would share their success and thank their parents as well. For this, the achievers would have to take photos of themselves with their parents.
Kelsey didn’t really want that because her mother had put on a lot of weight due to a sedentary (久坐的) lifestyle. Kelsey managed to contact one of the best photographers and made a reservation in advance. When she and her mother came to the photographer’s studio, Kelsey took the man aside and said, “Please make sure my mom looks thinner in the photo.” But the photographer said what her mother really needed was a diet or exercise, not a photographer.
Kelsey insisted that he shouldn’t make her mother look like a slim dancer. She just expected him to do his best to make her mother look a bit thinner. The photographer finally agreed and took measures to hide some details, setting the right light and choosing better angles for shots. But it was not easy to fool the camera.
Kelsey’s mother noticed how the photographer was having a hard time and how her daughter was shaking her head. She smiled and said that she just wanted photos with Kelsey no matter whether she looked heavy or not.
The next day, Kelsey came to pick up the photos with her mother. The photographer printed out several photos, copied the rest on a flash drive and handed them to Kelsey. Kelsey was disappointed and complained. How she wished her mother could look much thinner! The photographer shrugged helplessly and said nothing. Kelsey’s mother, however, said that the photographer did a good job and she was who she was. Then she told Kelsey to accept the fact that her mother was not “the tiny girl Thumbelina (拇指姑娘) in the fairy tale.”

In the meantime as state fair spokesperson alga Robak says, it's bringing out “a broader conversation about how we decide what art is, and how we judge it appropriately.”

A recent survey has revealed that 70% of us have poor eyesight. Faced with the current situation, we students should respond actively to ease the serious condition.
First of all, we should take regular breaks from our study and go outside to give our eyes a chance to be exposed to sunlight. Of equal importance is avoidance of being too close to electronic equipment. Eventually, whenever and wherever we read, keep it in mind that proper lighting is a must so that our eyes don’t need to work hard.

第二节读后续写(满分 20 分)
57. 阅读下面材料,根据其内容和所给段落开头语续写两段,使之构成一篇完整的短文。

Then Kelsey’s mother turned and went out of the studio. Kelsey quickly followed her. After a few minutes’ silent walking, Kelsey’s mother stopped and looked straight at her daughter. “I know your feelings,” her mother said. “You are ashamed that people will find such a beautiful and successful Kelsey has such a fat mother. The fact is that I had no time to look after myself when I had to work two jobs to pay for your education. I’m sorry for not being perfect.”
