Math had never been something I was good at since middle school. Classes became harder in high school, and I was even further from a math teacher’s dream student. So at the start of my freshman year, I really loathed math. It wasn’t that I didn’t want to do well, but simply that I didn’t think I was able to do well. “I can’t” became my state of mind in all things about math.
However, I was soon to learn that “I can’t” was not a choice in Mr. A’s class.
Mr. A always greeted us with open arms as he said, “Welcome! Smile! It’s a great day to be alive!” It was clear that Mr. A had a true passion (热情) not only for math but for teaching. If Mr. A ever experienced bad days in life, he never showed it. Mr. A greeted us with that same smile every day. He encouraged each student, from the top achiever to the “T can’t” student.
I found myself looking forward to math class, although I still hated the subject itself. Being in Mr. A’s presence made me feel good, as if I had the chance to succeed. As the year progressed, I spent increasingly more time on my homework, and I met with Mr. A weekly. My classmates began to do the same, and it became “cool” to have lunch and talk with Mr. A. We didn’t know it at the time, but he was changing our attitudes.
Though my story is not one of overnight successes and I didn’t become a straight-A math student, my hard work did begin to pay off and my grades slowly began to climb. There were hard times, of course. Difficult math questions sometimes succeeded in bringing me down, but Mr. A kept reminding me, “Kate, smile! It’s a-great day to be alive!”
4. What does the underlined word “loathed” in paragraph 1 probably mean
A. Hated. B. Loved. C. Researched. D. Understood.
5. What do we know about Mr. A
A. He loved math and his job. B. He liked showing his sufferings.
C. He was very strict with the students. D. He preferred to encourage the top students.
6. How did the author like her talk over lunch with Mr. A
A. It was boring. B. It was awkward. C. It was challenging. D. It was meaningful.
7. What can we infer from the last two paragraphs
A. Kate made progress in math study. B. Kate gradually fell in love with math.
C. Kate was still afraid of math problems. D. Kate became a top student in math class.

Hole-in-the-wall restaurants (苍蝇小馆) are rising in popularity in China. Recently, the “hole-in-the-wall” topic appeared on Sina Weibo, leading to discussions and attracting 67, 000 reading views.
According to Hubei Daily, hole-in-the-wall restaurants focus more on delicious food over decor (室内装潢) or service. Now, hole-in-the-wall restaurants are often found in the corners of small lanes and alleys (小巷) in different parts of a city. The most popular hole-in-the-wall restaurants usually have a history of more than 10 years and are run as family businesses.
A university student, Zhou, living in Wuhan, tried a hole-in-the-wall restaurant with her friend after other friends recommended it to her. She ordered 3 dishes, which only cost 64 yuan. “The food tastes good, and it's cheap,” she told Hubei Daily.
Wang Hongjie, a 16-year-old from Chengdu, likes the experience of eating at hole-in-the-wall restaurants. “Due to the limited space, diners at small-in-the-hole restaurants usually need to eat meals with strangers at the same table. This gives people the chance to talk with each other, creating a sense of hustle and bustle (烟火气),” she said. “But at internet-famous restaurants, diners just quietly enjoy their meals. It’s boring.”
Even so, Zou Zhiping, a professor at Hubei University of Economics, said that due to resource limitations as well as a lack of food safety awareness, hygiene (卫生) and food safety issues are more common at hole-in-the-wall restaurants. To solve these problems, Zousuggested that the local government provide training and support for these restaurants.
8. What is special about hole-in-the-wall restaurants
A. They are run by dining groups. B. They are located in busy streets.
C. They provide tasty but cheap food. D. They center more on service.
9. What does Wang like about hole-in-the-wall restaurants
A. The quiet dinning environment. B. The reliable customer service.
C. The active communications. D. The good quality dishes.
10. What problem do hole-in-the-wall restaurants have according to Zou
A. The limitation of seating space. B. The absence of training and support.
C. The variety of food served there. D. The concern of cleanliness and food safety.
11. What is the text mainly about
A. Reasons for the popularity of hole-in-the-wall restaurants.
B. An introduction to hole-in-the-wall restaurants in China.
C. Different opinions about hole-in-the-wall restaurants.
D. Problems of hole-in-the-wall restaurants in China.

For the rapidly decreasing number of Americans who’ve never heard of pickleball, the unknown game is one of America’s fastest-growing sports.
Invented in 1965 by three middle aged fathers in Washington State, pickleball is an unusual cross among tennis, pingpong and badminton, played with paddle (球拍) and a perforated (穿孔的) plastic ball. The founders are said to have named the game after a family dog called Pickles.
Most of pickleball’s main players—those who play more than eight times per year are over age 65, but the game is getting younger, with the strongest growth among players under 55. But with so many new players, the US is struggling to keep up with the demands for courts. The country has only about 10, 000 places to play, but that continues to grow by several dozen every month.
The Professional Pickleball Association (PPA) Tour was formed in 2018 and the professional players are drawing more and more attention. Traditional broadcasters’ interest in the sport is growing. So far, pickleball fans can watch amateur (业余的) and professional matches on sports or social channels, mostly online.
“The ability for a sport to find an audience quickly via social media is unmatched,” said Ben Shields, who lectures at Mit’s Sloan School of Management and studies the sports industry. “I think if pickleball can continue to grow its participation and find ways to make the sport a fascinating product, it could be a big competitor in the global sports industry soon.”
12. What can we know about the pickleball game from the text
A. It is named after a family dog. B. It’s not well-received by teenagers.
C. It’s popular sport in the world. D. It is invented by tree ordinary women.
13. What does the underlined word “that” in paragraph 3 refer to
A. The number of pickleball courts. B. The need for pickleball courts.
C The growth in main pickleball players. D. The chance of people playing pickleball.
14. Which of the following will Ben Shields most probably agree with
A. Pickleball plays a big part in the sports industry.
B. It’s easy for pickleball to find wider audiences.
C. Social media is helpful in attracting audiences.
D. It’s necessary to advertise the sports product.
15. Which of the following can be the best title of the text
A. Tips for Becoming Professional Pickleball Players
B. Pickleball: an America’s Fastest-growing Sport
C. Ways to Make Pickleball a Big Competitor
D. Social Media: a Tool to Promote Pickleball

When my mom and dad said that we could adopt (收养) a couple of kittens (小猫), I jumped at the chance to have some soft, hairy animals around the house. So off we went to the Humane Society where there were a lot of animals up for adoption.
You just can’t imagine how excited I was when we entered the Humane Society. The first thing I noticed was that there was not a lot of room for the animals and not a lot of supplies to care for them. Even though they didn’t have much, the people who worked there cared about the animals more than anything, and they did their best for them. Still, it seemed that they didn’t have enough food and medicine to keep the animals healthy.
When we started looking around, I saw a lot of animals and fell in love with each of them. But my family and I finally settled on adopting two kittens and we named them Sox and Sierra. We went up to the front desk to sign the papers for them, and that’s when I noticed a box on the counter. The Humane Society was hoping to get enough donations (捐赠) to buy more supplies for the animals and also build a new building to help even more abandoned (被遗弃的) animals. We finished up and took our new kittens home, where they were sure to get a lot of love.
Later that day, my mom and I went shopping, and as we were walking through the parking lot at the store, I noticed a green piece of paper three spaces away from our car. It was kind of wet, but it looked like it could be a dollar bill, so I walked over and picked it up. Much to my surprise, it was a twenty-dollar bill. I looked around, trying to find out who had lost the bill, but in vain (徒劳地).
注意:
1. 续写词数应为150左右;
2. 请按如下格式作答。
When I got home, I dried off the bill and thought about what to do with it.

The lady at the front desk smiled at us when we walked toward the donation box.

【答案】4. A 5. A 6. D 7. A

C. The growth in main pickleball players. D. The chance of people playing pickleball.
14. Which of the following will Ben Shields most probably agree with
A. Pickleball plays a big part in the sports industry.
B. It’s easy for pickleball to find wider audiences.
C. Social media is helpful in attracting audiences.
D. It’s necessary to advertise the sports product.
15. Which of the following can be the best title of the text
A. Tips for Becoming Professional Pickleball Players
B. Pickleball: an America’s Fastest-growing Sport
C. Ways to Make Pickleball a Big Competitor
D. Social Media: a Tool to Promote Pickleball
【答案】12. A 13. A 14. C 15. B

故选A项。
【14题详解】
推理判断题。根据最后一段““The ability for a sport to find an audience quickly via social media is unmatched,” said Ben Shields, who lectures at Mit's Sloan School of Management and studies the sports industry. (“一项运动通过社交媒体迅速找到观众的能力是无与伦比的,”在麻省理工学院斯隆管理学院(Mit’s Sloan School of Management)授课、研究体育产业的本·希尔兹(Ben Shields)说。)”可知,本·希尔兹认为一项运动通过社交媒体迅速找到观众的能力是无与伦比的,所以他同意社交媒体有助于吸引观众。故选C项。
【15题详解】
主旨大意题。根据第一段“For the rapidly decreasing number of Americans who’ve never heard of pickleball, the unknown game is one of America’s fastest-growing sports.(对于从未听说过匹克球的美国人来说,这项不为人知的运动是美国发展最快的运动之一)”以及纵观全文可知,本文介绍了美国快速发展的运动项目pickleball,所以B项“Pickleball: an America’s Fastest-growing Sport(匹克球:美国发展最快的运动)”是本文最好的标题。故选B项。

【16题详解】
根据前文“Laziness and tiredness are so alike that it is difficult to tell them apart.(懒惰和疲劳是如此相似,以至于很难将它们区分开来)”可知,空格处的句子应该提到“疲劳和懒惰的不同”,F项“Here are five obvious signs to show you’re experiencing tiredness rather than laziness(这里有五个明显的迹象表明你正在经历疲劳而不是懒惰)”承接上文,开始讲述懒惰和疲劳区别,并引出下文,符号语境。故选F项。

根据前文“A clear difference between someone who’s tired and someone who’s lazy is that tired people felt attracted by many things before.(疲倦的人和懒惰的人之间有一个明显的区别,那就是疲倦的人以前会被很多事情吸引)”以及后文“And they find it hard to do the things they once loved.(他们发现很难再做自己曾经热爱的事情了)”可知,疲倦的人之前会被很多事情吸引,现在发现很难再做自己曾经热爱的事情了,所以空处应是表转折,承接前后文,E项“But they may now be struggling to find interest or enjoyment(但他们现在可能正在努力寻找兴趣或乐趣)”符合文意,承接上文,引出下文。故选E项。
【18题详解】
分析设空,是个问句,答案在B,D两项中,位于句首,是本段中心句,根据后文“Do you often feel emotionally (情感上地) out of control and don’t know why If you start to have trouble controlling your emotions, especially when it never used to be a problem for you, this might be a warning sign of tiredness rather than laziness.(你是否经常感到情绪失控而不知道为什么 如果你开始难以控制自己的情绪,尤其是当它从来都不是你的问题时,这可能是疲劳的警告信号,而不是懒惰)”可知,本段讲述的是疲倦的人情绪会变的难以控制,所以C项“Do you suddenly find yourself easily angry(你是否突然发现自己很容易生气)”符合本段主题。故选C项。
【19题详解】
分析设空,是本段的小标题,对本段的高度概括,根据后文“One of the signs is that you care little about yourself and try to keep away from others. You don’t want to dress up yourself and you spend most of your time by yourself doing nothing.(其中一个迹象是你不关心自己,并试图远离他人。你不想打扮自己,而且你大部分时间都是一个人无所事事)”可知,本段主要讲述了,疲倦的人,不太关注自己,所以B项“Pay little attention to your selfcare(很少注意你的自我护理)”符合文意,是本段小标题。故选B项。
【20题详解】
分析设空,位于段尾,是对前文的总结,根据前文“Tiredness develops in different stages. All of the points mentioned above won’t just happen overnight. However, by the time you reach the final stage, tiredness has already become rooted so deeply in your life that the continuous mental and physical tiredness become much greater and harder to treat.(疲劳的发展有不同的阶段。

注意:
1. 续写词数应为150左右;

When I got home, I dried off the bill and thought about what to do with it.

【答案】范文
When I got home, I dried off the bill and thought about what to do with it. At first, I considered spending it on a toy that I had been dreaming of. But later it occurred to me that I was in great need of a new schoolbag. I was torn between the two choices and couldn’t make up my mind. Right then Sox climbed up into my lap and I immediately knew what I was going to do with the money. I asked my mom to take me back to the Humane Society so that I could put the money in the donation box.
The lady at the front desk smiled at us when we walked toward the donation box. I put the twenty-dollar bill into it and felt good about what I did. When we left, I left my name and number, hoping the workers there could contact me if the Humane Society has a special need for volunteers who can help take care of the lovely animals. The lady thanked me again. I decided that I would make every effort to help the animals.
