A Florida pet owner threw her cat to the Humane Society of Broward County late last month because the cat, known as Jerry, was too affectionate and noisy, according to reports.
The society posted a video of Jerry on TikTok that started with a letter titled, “TOO AFFECTIONATE!”in all caps and in blue.
“Yup that’s the reason why my owner put me here,” the letter read.“She said that I annoyed her and how sweet, loving and affectionate I was. But it was too much for her. She said I waited at the door for her and talked too much. I loved her, but she didn’t love me back.”
“I’m hoping somebody will love me for who I am,”the letter ended and was signed, “Jerry.”
At the bottom of the letter, there was a P.S. that read, “I’ve been waiting a long time for a home,” with an unhappy face emoji.
The video was viewed 9.1 million times, as of Sunday evening, was liked 1.6 million times and had nearly 30,000 comments.
The TikTok video was put to the organization’s page on Jan. 26, and the next day there were four families waiting at the shelter in Fort Lauderdale, Florida, ready to meet the 4-year-old black and white domestic short haired cat.
“His new mom saw his video on our social media pages and was here first thing when we opened the next day,” an official from the society said on Sunday.
By 2:45 p.m, the society updated everyone who reached out from across the country, saying Jerry was adopted.
“Sweet and loving Jerry has found a sweet and loving forever home where he can be as affectionate as he wants,” the Humane Society said in a new post.“Thanks to all of the shares on social media, Jerry’s video was seen by just the right person, and she ran to the shelter first thing this morning to adopt him. We couldn’t have done this without you all.”

A. Through posters from the Humane Society.
B. By seeing Jerry’s video on social media.
C. By seeing Jerry’s picture in a newspaper.
D. Through Jerry’s former owner’s introduction.
27. What can we infer from the last paragraph of the article
A. Social media’s support had no effect on Jerry’s adoption.
B. Jerry was adopted, but there’s no mention of social media’s role.
C. The Humane Society expresses anger towards Jerry’s previous owner.

C(改编)
Wouldn’t it be wonderful to travel to a foreign country without having to worry about the headache of communicating in a different language
In a recent Wall Street Journal article, technology policy expert Alec Ross argued that, within ten years or so, we would be able to communicate with one another through small earpieces with built-in microphones. That’s because technological progress is extremely fast. It’s only a matter of time. Such is the belief among certain parents that the technology is imminent and they’re wondering if their kids should learn a second language.
It’s true that an increase in the quantity and accuracy of the data loaded into computers will make them cleverer at translating “Noes Bueno dormer mucho” into “It’s not good to sleep too much”. Replacing a word with its equivalent (对等词) in the target language is actually the easy part of a translator’s job. But even this seems to be a difficult job for computers.
It’s so hard for computers because translation doesn’t — or shouldn’t — involve simply translating words, sentences or paragraphs. Rather, it’s about translating meaning. And in order to infer meaning from a specific expression, people need to understand a lot of information all at once. Think about all the related clues that help us understand what someone is trying to say: volume, gesture, situations, and even your culture. All are likely to convey as much meaning as the words you use.
Therefore, we should doubt a machine that can’t understand our world like we do. If people from different cultures can upset each other without realizing it, how can we expect a machine to do better Unless engineers actually find a way to breathe a soul into a computer, undoubtedly when it comes to conveying and interpreting meaning using a natural language, a machine will never fully take our place.
28. What does the underlined word “imminent” in Paragraph 2 probably mean
A. Ready. B. Confusing. C. Unpractical. D. Coming.
29. Why is it hard for computers to replace a word with its equivalent
A. The real meaning of words can vary.
B. Their data is not rich enough.
C. Their accuracy needs big improvement.
D. A man’s soul hasn’t been breathed in them.
30. What view does the author hold about translation
A. Proper translation can be difficult for computers.
B. Slight differences doesn’t matter in translation.
C. Machines will translate our world properly.
D. Cultures need more attention than words used.
31. What is the best title for the text
A. An Expert’s Prediction. B. Travel without Headache.
C. The Pleasure of Translation. D. Will the Language Barrier (障碍) Actually Fall
D 29. A 30. A 31. D
由第二段“That’s because technological progress is extremely fast. It’s only a matter of time. Such is the belief among certain parents that the technology is imminent and they’re wondering if their kids should learn a second language. (这是因为技术进步非常快。这只是时间问题。这就是某些家长的信念,他们认为这项技术imminent,他们想知道自己的孩子是否应该学习第二语言)”可知,因为技术进步非常迅速,(新技术的)只是时间问题,新技术即将到来,家长才会想知道孩子是否应学习第二语言,可推断imminent意为“即将到来的(Coming)”。故选D项。
【29题详解】
推理判断题。由第四段中“It’s so hard for computers because translation doesn’t — or shouldn’t — involve simply translating words, sentences or paragraphs. Rather, it’s about translating meaning. And in order to infer meaning from a specific expression, people need to understand a lot of information all at once. 故选A项。
由第四段中“It’s so hard for computers because translation doesn’t — or shouldn’t — involve simply translating words, sentences or paragraphs. Rather, it’s about translating meaning. And in order to infer meaning from a specific expression, people need to understand a lot of information all at once. (这对计算机来说太难了,因为翻译不——或者不应该——只涉及翻译单词、句子或段落。相反,它是关于翻译意义。为了从一个特定的表达中推断出意义,人们需要同时理解很多信息)”和最后一段中“If people from different cultures can upset each other without realizing it, how can we expect a machine to do better (如果来自不同文化背景的人在意识不到的情况下彼此冒犯,我们怎么能期望机器做得更好呢?)” 故选A项。
结合文章内容,第一段“Wouldn’t it be wonderful to travel to a foreign country without having to worry about the headache of communicating in a different language (去外国旅行而不必担心用不同语言交流的头痛,这不是很好吗?)”和最后一段中“Therefore, we should doubt a machine that can’t understand our world like we do. If people from different cultures can upset each other without realizing it, how can we expect a machine to do better

Scientists at the University of Chicago have discovered that a compound (化合物) in red meat, dairy and other products might help your body fight against cancer. The compound, known as trans-vaccenic acid or TVA, seems to activate the T cells in your body, which help your immune (免疫) system protect you from disease.
TVA is found in the meat of animals such as cows, sheep and other animals, and their dairy products like milk, cheese, butter and cream. The study also finds that cancer patients who have higher levels of TVA in their blood had a better response to immunotherapy That discovery suggested to the researchers that TVA might be useful during cancer treatment.
To see that a single nutrient like TVA is so magical to strengthen the immune, the researchers started the research with a database of around 700 known metabolites, which are small molecules (小分子) that come from food. They then selected the metabolites for their abilities against cancer. After the top six compounds were chosen, scientists analyse their cancer-fighting abilities in human and mouse cells — TVA performed the best in fighting the development of cancer.
“It’s very difficult to understand the link between diet and human health because of the wide variety of foods people eat,” Jing Chen, a cancer researcher at the University of Chicago said. “By focusing on nutrients that can activate T cell responses, we found one that actually strengthen anti-cancer immunity by activating an important immune pathway.”
But — to the disappointment of many — the study authors didn’t advise people to eat more red meat and dairy. “There is a growing body of evidence about the negative health effects of consuming too much red meat and dairy,” Chen added, “so this study shouldn’t be taken as an excuse to eat more cheeseburgers and pizza.”
“There is early data showing that other compounds from plants have the same cancer-fighting abilities, so we believe in the future there is a high possibility that nutrients from plants can do the same thing,” Chen said.
32. What role does TVA play in the body’s immune system
A. It prevents the function of immune cells.
B. It wakes up T cells to fight against diseases.
C. It increases the risk of cancer development.
D. It reduces the effect of immunotherapy.
33. In what way did scientists prove the effect of six compounds against cancer
A. They conducted surveys among cancer patients.
B. They did experiments on animals to measure the effect.
C. They analysed the taste and flavor of different compounds.
D. They tested the compounds’ abilities using human and mouse cells.
34. Which suggestion may come from the scientists in the study
A. Eat no red meat and milk.
B. Increase the intake of red meat and milk.
C. Take in suitable amount of red meat and milk.
D. Take cheeseburgers instead of red meat and milk.
35. What’s Chen’s attitude towards the future of their study on plants
A. Positive. B. Disappointed. C. Doubtful. D. Unclear.
B 33. D 34. C 35. A
由第一段中“The compound, known as trans-vaccenic acid or TVA, seems to activate the T cells in your body, which help your immune (免疫) system protect you from disease. (这种化合物被称为反式-11-十八烯酸或TVA,似乎可以激活你体内的T细胞,帮助你的免疫系统保护你免受疾病的侵袭)”可知,TVA在人体免疫系统中的作用是它唤醒T细胞对抗疾病。故选B项。
【33题详解】
细节理解题。由第三段中“They then selected the metabolites for their abilities against cancer. After the top six compounds were chosen, scientists analyse their cancer-fighting abilities in human and mouse cells — TVA performed the best in fighting the development of cancer. (在选出前六种化合物后,科学家们分析了它们在人类和小鼠细胞中的抗癌能力——TVA在对抗癌症发展方面表现最好)”可知,科学家通过用人体和小鼠细胞测试了这些化合物的能力来证明六种化合物对癌症有疗效。故选D项。
【34题详解】

【35题详解】
推理判断题。由最后第一段““There is early data showing that other compounds from plants have the same cancer-fighting abilities, so we believe in the future there is a high possibility that nutrients from plants can do the same thing,” Chen said. (陈说:“有早期数据表明,植物中的其他化合物也具有同样的抗癌能力,因此我们相信,未来植物中的营养物质也很有可能起到同样的作用。”)”可知,植物中的其他化合物也具有同样的抗癌能力,未来植物中的营养物质也很有可能起到同样抗癌作用;由此推知,陈对他们未来的植物研究持乐观态度。故选A项。

The video was viewed 9.1 million times as of Sunday evening, was liked 1.6 million times and had nearly 30,000 comments.

C. Doubtful. D. Unclear.
