Winning an influential science award is a really big deal. Especially if you are only 12 years old. But Shanya Gill, a middle schooler from San Jose, California, won the top award in the Thermo Fisher. Scientific Junior Innovators Challenge for designing a fire detection system that is superior to existing ones.
Thermo Fisher is the country’s premier STEM competition and reaches 65,000 middle schools from across the US. There are 30 finalists---from the nearly 5,000 applicants—that competed in the Washington DC awards ceremony.
Shanya’s inspiration came after a fire destroying a restaurant in her neighborhood during the summer of 2022. “I had never really experienced something like that before,” she told Washington Post, about the early morning fire at Holder’s Country Inn, which started in the kitchen. “They had smoke detectors, and yet it still burned down,” she added. After she studied fire statistics and saw how common fires are, Shanya decided that she was going to do something about it.
She spent more than a year developing a fire detection system that she believes could have prevented the fire. That’s because traditional smoke detectors sense active fires from the smoke in the air. Shanya’s thermal imaging device (热成像设备) is designed to stop fires from occurring. Her complicated system has two parts, a thermal camera and a Raspberry Pi, a tiny computer. The device detects when a heat source has been left unattended for ten minutes and sends a text message warning.
Creating the prototype (雏形) was difficult and the hardest part was the coding. “I had two designs, and my first design completely failed. It was a really big barrier I had to go through,” she said. The final device outperforms smoke detectors in speed and accuracy. Shanya wants to bring the costs down to $60 to make it even more affordable than hardwired smoke detectors.
“Shanya saw a problem and she went after it and tried to solve it, and that’s what we need to encourage with all young people,” said Ajmera, “She has exhibited boundless curiosity.” Ajmera also said, “Her remarkable research not only reflects her talent but also paves the way for an exciting new future.”
4. Why are some figures listed in paragraph 2
A. To show the difficulty of winning at Thermo Fisher.
B. To emphasize the significance of the awards ceremony.
C. To provide statistics on the success rate of participants.
D. To highlight the large number of applicants.
5. What inspired Shanya Gill to create her fire detection system
A. Her interest in coding.
B. Winning a science award.
C. Her personal experience with fire.
D The need for a more affordable smoke detector.
6. How does Shanya’s thermal imaging device differ from traditional smoke detectors
A. It is cheaper than smoke detectors.
B. It requires a hardwired connection.
C. It can discover the heat source accurately.
D. It is designed to prevent fires from occurring.
7. Which of the following words can best describe Shanya
A. Talented and curious. B. Ambitious and determined.
C. Confident and caring. D. Brave and famous.

Zero-emission cars are soaring in popularity but running an electric vehicle is next to impossible in places with limited charging facilities. Stella Terra, the world’s first SUV solar-powered vehicle, could change that. It uses solar panels on its sloping roof to charge its electric battery, meaning it can drive long distances powered entirely by the sun.
“Built by a team of 22 students at Eindhoven University of Technology (TUE), it could help connect remote areas ‘where roads are less developed and electricity is not as reliable’, and assist with emergency aid and deliveries,” says Thieme Bosman, events manager for the team.
Electric SUVs are heavier than standard electric vehicles, and require bigger, heavier batteries to power them. “Where the SUV market currently innovates on the previous models, we really start from scratch and design everything ourselves,” says Bosman. Minimizing the vehicle’s weight was essential, and the team of 22 students focused on making every element extremely efficient.
The team tested the vehicle in Morocco earlier this month, driving more than 1,000 kilometers between the country’s northern coast and the Sahara Desert in the south. “Morocco has a huge variety of landscapes and different surfaces in quite a short distance,” says Bosman, adding that the car was tested on every type of surface that a car like this could encounter.
Bosman noted that the vehicle had proved to be one-third more efficient than expected on the trip, and that its lightweight design made it less likely to get stuck on rough ground, and put less stress on its suspension.
Bosman and his peers hope their concept SUV could be mass produced in the near future. “We aim to also inspire not only everyday people, but also the automotive industry, the Ford and Chryslers of the world, to think again about their designs and to innovate faster than they currently do,” says Bosman. “It’s up to the market now, which has the resources and the power to make this change and the switch to more sustainable vehicles.”
8. What is the purpose of paragraph 1
A. To advertise Stella Terra. B. To introduce the topic.
C. To state the background information. D. To recommend solar panels.
9. What is the key to building Stella Terra
A. Referring to previous models. B. Making the most of each student.
C. Designing a bigger and efficient battery. D. Reducing the weight of the car.
10. How did Stella Terra perform during its test drive in Morocco
A. It ran smoothly on uneven ground. B. It broke down after 1,000 kilometers.
C. It performed poorly on the Sahara Desert. D. It performed better than expected.
11. What does Bosman say about Stella Terra
A. It will be used by emergency services.
B. It consists of more sustainable designs.
C. It benefits places with insufficient electricity.
D. It has been accepted by automotive companies.
【答案】8. B 9. D 10. D 11. B

The sound of people chewing or baby screaming can drive some people into anger, and scientists have actually discovered the neurological (神经系统的) wiring responsible for this strange condition. This kind of phenomenon is called misophonia (恐音症). While it’s been recognized as a condition since 2000, research into its cause has been limited. There are no official criteria and those who experience it often find it difficult to be taken seriously.
In 2017, a team led by researchers from Newcastle University found evidence of changes to the brain’s frontal lobe (额叶) that could account for the emotional response triggered by sounds in those with misophonia.
A test group of 20 volunteers listened to neutral, repetitive sounds, such as a boiling kettle; annoying sounds such as a baby’s cry, and “triggering” sounds, including breathing noises or loud chewing. Their neurological and physiological responses were compared with those from a control group of 22 volunteers without misophonia.
Neither group reacted much to the neutral or annoying sounds. When it came to the “triggering” sounds, however, those in the test group experienced significantly increased heart rates and skin conductivity. Brain scans also revealed a marked difference in the volunteers’ neurology. In those with misophonia, the triggering noises are correlated with increased activity in various regions of the brain, including the frontal lobe and the anterior insular cortex (前岛叶皮质AIC), which is responsible for a bunch of mediation tasks, including managing emotional experience. While the triggering sounds also sparked a reaction in the AIC of those without misophonia, the fact that there was no marked increase in the activity of areas such as AIC indicates a higher level of control.
Team leader Sukhbinder Kumar said, “For many people with misophonia, the finding will come as welcome news, as for the first time, we have demonstrated a difference in brain structure and function in sufferers.” Sadly, the discovery doesn’t come with an easy fix. It might help the rest of us sympathize, however, and consider chewing with our mouths closed.
12. What can we learn about misophonia
A. It’s a condition where people cannot tolerate certain sounds.
B. It’s a psychological condition caused by loud chewing noises.
C. It’s a hearing disability that makes people sensitive to sound.
D. It’s a neurological disorder that affects the frontal lobe.
13. What does the underlined word “triggered” in paragraph 2 probably mean
A. Controlled. B. Relieved. C. Caused. D. Predicted.
14. What did the study conducted by Newcastle University find
A. Annoying sounds had a greater effect on people with misophonia.
B. Misophonia is caused by a lack of control over one’s emotions.
C. People with misophonia has a lower level of control.
D. AIC has little to do with emotional experience.
15. Which of the following is the best title for the text
A. When you can’t bear chewing sound, close your mouth
B. How you can fix sound disorder varies with different people.
C. Whether you can control annoying sound depends on your brain
D. If you can’t stand the sound of people chewing, blame your brain
【答案】12. A 13. C 14. C 15. D

When I was 15, I fell in love with the songs when they were first released — Bring Him Home, I Dreamed A Dream and On My Own. Even though I hadn’t read Les Miserables and knew very little about the musical, the songs captured my attention and I happily sang along with enthusiasm and energy whenever I heard them on the radio.
At the age of 17, I watched Les Miserables in a theatre of Vancouver. After getting home, I was really thrilled and announced that I wanted to perform in the musical. Hearing what I said, my parents did nothing but support me, although they considered the thought ridiculous, given that we lived 50 kilometres from the nearest large town, Toowoomba. There was little likelihood of ever having a chance to perform.
But some things are just meant to be. The Toowoomba Choral Society bought the performance rights with the view to perform it. Although I was not a member of the choir, they called for auditions (试镜) and I went along. I had had no experience singing and had never performed in any musicals but I believed in miracles and hoped that there was a place for me somewhere in the chorus.
I tried out for the part of Javert but did not have the range. Little did I know there were a host of parts that needed filling. Fortunately, I was chosen to be in the chorus as well as playing seven roles — ten costume changes in all. It was so exciting to play all the different parts. Rehearsals (排练) started immediately and I got a crash course in singing, acting and dancing. There was so much to learn and as I drove to rehearsals three times a week a little voice would say, “You are in over your head, get out now.”
I really had a hard time rehearsing — first with written texts and sheet music and then without. Personally, I struggled. So much to learn really made me so crazy that I had a strong desire to quit. And the little voice “You are in over your head, get out now.” rang in my ears again.

___________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________
【答案】One possible version:
At that time, my parents’ determined look appeared in my mind. They had always been there for me, and I didn’t want to disappoint them. Instead, I wanted to make them proud. With this in mind, I resolved to push through any challenge and continue rehearsing. I sought guidance from my fellow cast members and practiced timelessly at home. Gradually, I began to understand the characters and their emotions, and my singing and acting skills improved significantly. Finally, the big day arrived.
On the opening night, nervous as I was, I gathered my courage and stepped on the stage. The audience’s applause filled me with confidence, and I knew that my hard work would pay off. Throughout the performance, I felt a strong connection with the other actors and the story we were telling. As the final note came to an end, I knew we made it. I felt a sense of accomplishment. I had achieved the impossible — rising above my limitations and performing in the greatest musical. My unexpected musical journey taught me that with determination, perseverance, and support from others, I could overcome my obstacle.

D. The need for a more affordable smoke detector.
C

D It’s a neurological disorder that affects the frontal lobe.
A. When you can’t bear chewing sound close your mouth
B. How you can fix sound disorder varies with different people.
C. Whether you can control annoying sound depends on your brain
D. If you can’t stand the sound of people chewing, blame your brain
