I’m in middle school, and not that good at reading. I am a little behind and hate the books we are made to read. But I want to get better at reading. I don’t like being the weakest reader in the class. I want to change. I know I need help when it comes to reading. I’m hopeful that I can overcome(克服)my weakness if I try to find some ways and work hard.
So I go to the library every weekend. Last Saturday I went straight to the Young Adult section to search. There were hundreds of books to choose from. Finally, I saw a cover that was shiny, and it reflected(反射)the light and caught my eye. I saw that it was blue—I liked blue. So I picked it up and read the back. It sounded interesting, although it was the second book in the series, I got it. I read that book in two days, and found it was so attractive, so I read the whole series in a week.
By judging(判断)a book by its cover, I was not only able to pick up a book that became one of my favourites, but I also didn’t have to pick up hundreds of books that I may not like. If I never judged a book by its cover, I might have never found that book in the first place.
This advice is suitable for other things in life as well, especially when it comes to people. It’s not always exact, but by judging a person by their appearance—the way they dress, talk, and act—you can quickly see if you want to read their general condition by having a conversation with them. A health y lifestyle that includes responsible drinking, a health y diet, regular(有规律的)physical activity, health y sleep and frequent social connection, while avoiding smoking and too much sedentary(久坐不动)behaviour, reduces the risk of depression(抑郁), new research has found.
Researchers found that of all of factors, having a good night’s sleep—between seven and nine hours a night—made the biggest difference, reducing the risk of depression by 22%. Frequent(频繁的)social connection, in general, reduced the risk of depression by 18%, responsible drinking decreased the risk of depression by 11%, healthy diet by 6%, regular physical activity by 14%, never smoking by 20%, and low-to-moderate sedentary behaviour by 13%.
Based on the number of healthy lifestyle factors an individual stuck to, they were separated to one of three groups: unfavourable, intermediate(中等的), and favourable lifestyle. Individuals in the intermediate group were around 41% less likely to develop depression compared to those in the unfavourable lifestyle, while those in the favourable lifestyle group were 57% less likely.
The team then examined the DNA of the people in the group, giving each a genetic risks core. This score was based on the number of genetic variants(基因变异)an individual carried that have a known link to risk of depression. Those with the lowest genetic risk score were 25% less likely to develop depression when compared to those with the highest score—a much smaller impact than lifestyle.
In people at high, medium, and low genetic risk for depression, the team further found that a health y lifestyle can cut the risk of depression. This research stresses the importance of living a health y lifestyle for preventing depression, regardless of a person’s genetic risk.
Professor Barbara Sahakian, from the Department of Psychiatry at the University of Cambridge, said, “Although our DNA—the genetic hand we’ve been deal—can increase our risk of depression, we’ve shown that a healthy lifestyle is more important.”

One possible version:
Dear Li Tao,
You have asked me for advice concerning health y lifestyle to better adapt to high school life, and I am writing this letter, hoping to offer you some practical suggestions.
First of all, we should form the good habit of keeping early hours. As the saying goes, early to bed and early to rise makes a man healthy, wealthy and wise. In addition, we’re supposed to take meals slowly and regularly, which contributes to good digestion and health. Last but not least, it’s strongly recommended that we should spare as much time as possible to work out. Only in this way can we live a happy and healthy life and make our study more productive.
I sincerely hope my advice will be of some help to you.
Yours,
Li Hua
