Eating too much fatty food, exercising too little and smoking can raise your future risk of heart disease. But there is another factor that can cause your heart problems more immediately: the air you breathe.
Previous studies have linked high exposure (暴露) to environmental pollution to an increased risk of heart problems, but two analyses now show that poor air quality can lead to heart attack or stroke (中风) within as little as a few hours after exposure. In one review of :he research, scientists found that people exposed to high levels of pollutants (污染物) were up to 5% more likely to suffer a heart attack within days of exposure than those with lower exposure. A separate study of stroke patients showed that even air that the U. S. Environmental Protection Agency(EPA) considers to be of “moderate” (良好) quality and relatively safe for our health can raise the risk of stroke as much as 34% within 12 to 14 hours of exposure.
The authors of both studies stress that these risks are relatively (相对地) small for healthy people and certainly modest compared with other risk factors such as smoking and high blood pressure However, it is important to be aware of these dangers because everyone is exposed to air pollution regardless of lifestyle choices. So stricter regulations by the EPA of pollutants may not only improve environmental air quality but could also become necessary to protect public health.

In 2019, Wang Jibing, a food delivery rider, had an unpleasant experience due to the wrong address left by a customer. Wang searched three buildings and climbed 18 floors before he finally managed to deliver the food to the customer, who rudely scolded (责备) Wang for arriving late. Wang was sad and depressed. As a husband and father of three children, who took the majority of the financial responsibility in his family, he had to bear all silently. People have different ways of dealing with waste paper, specifically used newspapers. Some put them in the recycling area, while others keep them as wrappers (包装纸). While these are both good measures, a Japanese publishing company had a better idea for their end use.
The Mainichi Newspapers Co., Ltd. invented the "Green Newspaper", which allows people to grow plants with it. This special newspaper was published on Greenery Day, which is focused on environmental news and made of green paper with seeds placed into it. What makes it even more special is the ink (油墨) used to print words and photos, which is made from plants. The publisher advises readers to tear the used newspaper into small pieces and plant them in a container with soil. They should water them, like watering any plant. Within a few weeks, the seeds will grow into plants.
This brilliant concept was invented by Dentsu Inc., one of Japan’s most famous advertising agencies, which works with the publishing company on the initiative(倡议). The publisher’s belief is environmental sustainability (持续性). As its mission statement says, "The Mainichi doesn’t take action only through information, but also by solving global issues." With joint efforts, this initiative has reached the corners of Japan and sold around millions of copies daily. Other such initiatives producing plantable paper are also seen in India and the US.
About 95 million trees are lost for producing newspapers every year. The Internet, the number of whose users stands for 62.5 percent of the population worldwide, has influenced how people read news and the print readership(读者人数) has dropped greatly. However, the reinvention and reimagination of this newspaper will bring about a change in the publishing industry as well as having an environmental influence.
32. What do we know about the “Green Newspaper”
A. It’s printed with plant-based ink. B. It uses high-tech materials.
C. It provides energy for seeds. D. It’s published to celebrate Greenery Day.
33. What message does the publisher’s mission statement convey
A. It’s easier said than done. B. Everything comes to him who waits.
C. Many hands make light work. D. Actions speak louder than words.
34. What’s the author’s attitude to the "Green Newspaper"
A. Doubtful. ‘B. Indifferent. C. Supportive. D. Negative.
35. What can we learn from the last paragraph
A. About 59 million trees are lost for producing newspapers.
B. The popularity of the Internet leads to the fall of the print readership.
C. The Internet has changed the way people read news totally.
D. The "Green Newspaper" will encourage more people to protect the environment.

A few weeks after the start of the school year, Mello noticed that his friend Melvin was being laughed at by other classmates for the fact that his shoes were worn out (破旧的). Mello couldn’t stand seeing his friend being bullied (欺凌). He really didn’t appreciate other people talking about him that way. In fact, he had been bullied because he was short, so he decided to call his mother immediately after school. He told her that he was tired of this bad situation and that he couldn’t stand anyone laughing at his friend. So, in an act of generosity, Mello suggested that he use his pocket money to buy Melvin a new pair of shoes. He also said that he could do without a New Year gift. Seeing the little boy acted as an adult, the mother was deeply touched and agreed to his request.
After buying them, Mello went to bed earlier than usual, so he could wake up early the next day and go to school a little earlier. This way he could deliver the shoes to his friend without being noticed by other classmates. However, shortly after he gave the shoes to his friend, the headmaster, Bryant Brown, called him into his office.
Mr. Brown told him that he had seen Melvin with a shoebox around the school. When he asked Melvin what was in the box, Melvin showed him that it was a new pair of shoes. Melvin explained that it was his friend Mello who had bought them for him. Mello explained to Mr. Brown that he bought them with his pocket money. Mr. Brown wanted to share this touching moment with more people, and then he took a picture of the shoes.

第二节(共1小题, 满分 25 分)
Mr. Brown asked the children’s parents for permission to share the story online. When they said yes, he posted it, with the message “My student Mello told me he was tired of other students laughing at Melvin for his shoes. Mello used his pocket money and bought Melvin new shoes.” The post quickly got many likes, was shared lots of times and received plenty of comments.
Mr. Brown was amazed to see his post get so many likes. He stated that it was truly a kind gesture he had never seen in his life, especially when it happened at his school. He was lost for words because Mello’s motivation was that we should always treat people the way we want to be treated. He promised to engage children beyond the classroom and make joy an essential part of learning. In addition, the story has also been featured in media outlets. The children’s families were all impressed by the responses to the touching story.

Text 1
W: I’ve been working nonstop these days.
M: You’d better not push yourself too hard, or your body will break down.
Text 2
W: Good afternoon, sir. Can I help you
M: Oh, thank you. My name is John Smith. I would like to check in.
W: Sorry, sir. We don’t have any record of your reservation.
M: But my secretary said she had reserved a room for me here. Could you check it again, please
Text 3
M: Excuse me, do you think the director can see me before 9 o’clock tomorrow
W: I’m afraid he won’t be here until 9:30.
M: Then how about 10 o’clock
W: OK, it’s fine. I’ll write down the time.
Text 4
W: I’ve been working on this report all day. And I’ve still got 12 pages to write. At this rate, I can’t finish it by tomorrow.
M: Oh, you’re not in class today, so you probably haven’t heard that our teacher has extended the deadline by a week.
Text 5
M: Did you find the money I left on the desk this morning
W: Yes, but what’s that for
M: Didn’t you receive the message I sent you I wanted you to buy some stamps for me.
W: Oh, sorry. I didn’t notice it.
Text 6
M: Hey, Li Li, I need your help.
W: Sure, Tony. What’s up
M: My Chinse friend invited me to her house for dinner for the first time. I’m not sure how to eat politely.
W: So you need a quick lesson in Chinese table manners
M: That’s right. By the way, I also wonder what kind of gift would be appropriate.
W: OK. Let’s start with table manners. There are some easy things to do.
M: Like what
W: Close your mouth when you chew. That’s important.
M: I won’t talk with my mouth full.
W: Good. And don’t put your elbows on the table while you are eating.
M: Really Oops, I do that sometimes.
W: And don’t use your chopsticks to point at people or food. That’s impolite.
M: Oh, I get it.
W: Oh, can you eat with chopsticks

W: Do you like to read the news on the Internet, George

M: Yes. The earthquake hit the south area. And many people died.
W: It made me very sad to hear about the news.

M: Hey, Mary! Have you decided which school to go to
W: My mother wants me to attend Willis, but I’d rather go to Hoover.
M: Willis is a good school. But it’s a bit expensive.
W: Expense isn’t a problem for my parents.
M: Well, why do you prefer Hoover to Willis then
W: To my amazement, Willis has a rule about what you shouldn’t wear: no jeans, no shorts and no vests. The list is endless. It’s unbelievable.
M: So, who cares At least, they don’t require students to wear uniforms.
W: That wouldn’t matter to you. You always wear the same clothes to school: dark trousers and a polo shirt.
M: Yeah, so
W: So, I like variety. I also like to have my style.
M: Anyhow, I think the rule is reasonable. They just want students to concentrate more on their studies and less on clothes.
W: I know. Still, I hope my parents don’t force me to go to Willis.
M: Believe me, Mary, no matter what you wear, you’ll look great!
W: Well, thank you, Alan!

Text 10
Amy Jandrisevits used to work as a social worker in a children’s hospital in America. She often used dolls to help children feel more hopeful. "Dolls have the power that we don’t completely understand,” she said.
Eight years ago, a friend told Jandrisevits that she had difficulty picking out a doll for her daughter. That was because the girl had a scar on her face. “It’s hard to tell a kid, ‘You are perfect the way you are’, but never offer her anything that looks like her," the friend said. Then Jandrisevits decided to make a special doll by hand. The doll looked like her friend’s daughter. It also had a scar on its face. After her friend posted a photo of the happy girl with the doll online, another mother came to Jandrisevits for help. Her son Tom had a missing leg and she wanted a special doll, too.
The news spread quickly. Jandrisevits made dolls for children with scars and birthmarks that looked like them. And she set up a nonprofit organization, A Doll Like Me.
Jandrisevits now works from home seven days a week. She spends about eight hours making each doll. So far, Jandrisevits has made more than four hundred dolls. The waiting list is long, but she has never thought of stopping the project. She said, “Every kid should be able to look into the sweet face of a doll and see his or her own.”
