During our research for this sequence (一组镜头) we had been told we
shouldn’t even bother trying to film the Pallas’s cat (兔狲) in winter. Filming such
an animal was said to be near impossible. We wouldn’t be able to find such a small
animal in the vast steppes (大草原) of Mongolia. Besides this, they ,re known to be
easily frightened and extremely cautious. But we wanted to surprise audiences by
showing them frozen worlds that lay outside of the Poles.
Arriving in Mongolia, I was struck by its vastness. It ’s unbelievable that our first
day presented us with a good view of our hard-to-find target. Our guide took us to the
top of a hill. More than a kilometre away in an unimpressive pile of rocks, I could see
a tiny spot, a Pallas’ s cat! We were so excited!
We had been blessed with extremely low daytime temperatures. Pallas’s cats have
the densest coat of any cat, but even so they must save their energy as much as
possible. Their movements at these temperatures were especially seldom. While
conditions did not look promising, we still needed to see if we could actually film
them.
{#{QQABIQKEogAIAAJAAAhCAwX6CkMQkAAACIoOAEAIMAAAiRNABAA=}#}
The cats would only appear if the sun was out. But the steppe could be hit at any
time by fast and bitter winds which would make any animal that had decided to
appear come to an end. The decision as to whether to hold out for the weather to pass
or to have a rest was always a painful one to make.
But as the weeks went on and we spent more time with the cats, it was
astonishing to see just how it was that they were able to survive in such a difficult and
unpleasant environment. The longer we spent with them ,the more we found ourselves
falling in love with these attractive little characters and their winter lives.
24. Why do people think it’s unlikely to film the cats
A. The action is illegal. B. The steppes are not large.
C. The cats are extremely careful. D. The cat number is small.
25. How did the author feel when the steppes came into sight
A. Amazed. B. Excited. C. Anxious. D. Upset.
26. What can we infer from paragraph 3 and 4
A. We suffered low temperatures. B. The Pallas’s cats love the sun.
C. The decisions are hard to make. D. The filming condition is challenging.
27. What would be the best title of the text
A. Palla’s Cats—An Unusual Animal B. Experience of Filming the Palla’s Cats
C. Survival Skills on Mongolia Steppes D. Extreme Weather outside the Poles
C
Is it true that our brain alone is responsible for human cognition (认知) What
about our body Is it possible for thought and behaviour to originate from somewhere
other than our brain Psychologists who study Embodied Cognition (EC) ask similar
questions. The EC theory suggests our body is also responsible for thinking or
problem-solving. More precisely, the mind shapes the body and the body shapes the
mind in equal measure.
If you think about it for a moment, it makes total sense. When you smell
something good or hear amusing sounds, certain emotions are awakened. Think about
how newborns use their senses to understand the world around them. They don’t have
emotions so much as needs — they don’t feel sad, they’re just hungry and need food.
{#{QQABIQKEogAIAAJAAAhCAwX6CkMQkAAACIoOAEAIMAAAiRNABAA=}#}
Even unborn babies can feel their mothers’ heartbeats and this has a calming effect. In
the real world, they cry when they’re cold and then get hugged. That way, they start to
associate being warm with being loved.
Understandably, theorists have been arguing for years and still disagree on
whether the brain is the nerve centre that operates the rest of the body. Older Western
philosophers and mainstream language researchers believe this is fact, while EC
theories that the brain and body are working together as an organic supercomputer,
processing everything and forming your reactions.
Further studies have backed up the mind-body interaction. In one experiment, test
subjects were asked to judge people after being handed a hot or a cold drink. They all
made warm evaluations when their fingertips perceived warmth rather than coolness.
And it works the other way too. In another study, subjects’ fingertip temperatures
were measured after being “included” in or “rejected” from a group task. Those who
were included felt physically warmer.
For further proof, we can look at the metaphors (比喻) that we use without even
thinking. A kind and sympathetic person is frequently referred to as one with a soft
heart and someone who is very strong and calm in difficult situations is often
described as solid as a rock. And this kind of metaphorical use is common across
languages.
Now that you have the knowledge of mind-body interaction, why not use it If
you’re having a bad day, a warm cup of tea will give you a flash of pleasure. If you
know you’re physically cold, warm up before making any interpersonal decisions.
28.According to the author, what is the significance of EC
A.It brings us closer to the truth in human cognition.
B.It offers a clearer picture of the shape of human brain.
C.It reveals the major role of the mind in human cognition.
D.It facilitates our understanding of the origin of psychology.
{#{QQABIQKEogAIAAJAAAhCAwX6CkMQkAAACIoOAEAIMAAAiRNABAA=}#}
29.Where does the newborns’ understanding of their surroundings start from
A.Their personal looks. B.Their mental needs.
C.Their inner emotions. D.Their physical feelings.
30.What does the author intend to prove by citing the metaphors in Paragraph 5
A.Human speech is alive with metaphors.
B.Human senses have effects on thinking.
C.Human language is shaped by visual images.
D.Human emotions are often compared to natural materials.
31.What is the author’s purpose in writing the last paragraph
A.To deepen the readers’ understanding of EC.
B.To encourage the reader to put EC into practice.
C.To guide the reader onto the path to career success.
D.To share with the reader ways to release their emotions.
D
Aspirin has long been believed to help prevent heart attacks and strokes(中
风).Some studies have shown that it also has a protective effect against certain types
of cancer. As a result, some people religiously pop a low-dose(低剂量的) aspirin after
breakfast every day (never take one on an empty stomach). But now its status as a
wonder drug has come into question, following a meta-analysis of trial evidence.
A meta-analysis reviews the results of a large number of trials and can therefore
come to more certain conclusions. This latest review was published this May in The
Journal of the American Medical Association. It focused on the connection between
aspirin use and cardiovascular(心血管的 ) and bleeding events. It found that the
well-known risk that aspirin can cause internal bleeding is as great as the benefits of
preventing heart attacks and strokes. In some cases, the risk even outweighs the
benefits.
Aspirin thins the blood, thus helping to prevent blood clots (血栓). For his reason,
it is a good drug for protecting people who have already had a heart attack or stroke
from having another. However, the 164,225 people in these trials had no history of
cardiovascular disease. They were monitored for an average of six years, during
{#{QQABIQKEogAIAAJAAAhCAwX6CkMQkAAACIoOAEAIMAAAiRNABAA=}#}
which time they took a daily aspirin or placebo(安慰剂 ).Among those who took
aspirin, there were about 11% fewer heart attacks and strokes but 43% higher
likelihood of a major bleeding episode in the stomach, brain or intestine(肠道).
Dr Sean Zheng, a cardiology(心脏病学 ) researcher at King’s College London,
said that taking a daily aspirin couldn’t be recommended for healthy people. But there
might still be a case for people with a higher risk of a heart attack or stroke, he added.
However, it would be important to consider the bleeding risk.
“Aspirin use requires discussion between the patient and their doctor, with the
knowledge that any small potential cardiovascular benefits are weighed up against the
real risk of severe bleeding." he said. The findings reflect the average likelihood of
bleeds or heart attacks among the patients in all the trials. There will be people among
them who would be better off taking aspirin and those who will be worse. It's yet
another situation where we need to weigh up our individual risk and benefit--- maybe
with the help of an understanding GP.
32.Which of the following is NOT a reason why some people take an aspirin every
day
A.They want to lower their risk of having a heart attack
B.They hope to protect themselves against some cancers
C.They want to ensure they don't have a sick stomach
D.They aim to make sure they won't suffer another stroke
33.What can be concluded from the recent meta-analysis
A.That aspirin does more harm than good to the human body
B.That aspirin frequently causes internal bleeding because it thins the blood
C.That previous research into the effects of aspirin on the human body was
unreliable.
D.That taking aspirin is not worth the risk for those with no history of heart tacks
or strokes.
{#{QQABIQKEogAIAAJAAAhCAwX6CkMQkAAACIoOAEAIMAAAiRNABAA=}#}
34.What should people do before taking aspirin, according to the article
A.To have a thorough physical examination
B.To ask for others' opinions on the internet.
C.To read the findings of new studies on aspirin
D.To talk with a doctor familiar with their condition
35.The article was probably written by ________
A.the director of a hospital
B.a public health journalist
C.the CEO of a medical company
D.a representative for an insurance company

Clownfish like to live in coral reefs, but they don ,t spend their whole lives there.
In the first few months after they are born, they “wander ”in the open sea. When the
baby clownfish grow big enough to swim, they hurry home. They can’t see the reef,
however. 36
But humans — and their ships, speedboats, energy exploration platforms and even
surfing — have made the ocean an unbearably noisy place. 37 In the case
of baby clownfish, they make them unable to find their way home.
38 There are still many other sea animals depending on their ability to
hear for their survival. They use sounds to sense their environment and to
communicate. Dolphins call one another by unique names. Toadfish hum. Whales
sing.
Many sea animals swim away from the noises. 39 But
slow-moving animals like sea cucumbers (海参 ) are left helpless. In some
places, human-made noises are everywhere. Animals have to permanently move away
from these noises to quieter places. They are then forced to compete against others for
the same pools of resources. Overtime, their populations start to become smaller.
Luckily, the noise is a controllable pollutant. “We know exactly what causes the
noise, we know where it is and we know how to stop it”said Steve Simpson, a
biologist in England. 40 Wind-powered boats have been developed.
{#{QQABIQKEogAIAAJAAAhCAwX6CkMQkAAACIoOAEAIMAAAiRNABAA=}#}
Shipping routes can also be moved away from certain areas. Researchers are calling
for stricter rules. “We have noise standards for cars and trucks,”said
Carlos Duarte, another biologist.“Why should we not have them for ships ”
A. Clownfish are not the only ones to suffer.
B. Many solutions to this problem already exist.
C. Some animals could swim fast to catch food.
D. These noises are often louder than the natural ones.
E. Instead, they depend on the small noises that a reef lets out .
F. Whales, for example, can learn to avoid busy shipping routes.
G. Actually, the ocean has always been home to many clownfish.

W: We stayed at home all day. Then on Thursday, Grandpa took me to see a famous lake. It was amazing — I took lots of photos.
M: And what about Friday
W: My cousins came over and we all went to the cinema. We saw a film but it was a little boring.

M: Hello, Molly. Thank you for coming to the interview. Why did you start your online book club
W: A while ago, I had to do a project on a book we were studying. I wanted to talk about it with other students, but I could only find comments on different sites. We needed a place where students could chat about books.
M: So, at the club you only discuss books that you are studying
W: Well, that’s how it started. But after a while, teenagers started to talk about other things they loved reading.
M: Were you surprised by the success of the online book club
W: Yes and no. The surprising thing was that so many teenagers read in their free time. I wasn’t surprised students joined the club — it’s really useful for their school projects.
M: How many members are in the club
W: There are about 1,000 now and it’s growing!
M: How can someone join
W: Just go to our website and sign up. You need to fill in a form so we could know your name, age and which school you go to. Oh, and it’s free to join!
M: Thanks very much for talking to us, Molly.

I have always been interested in insects. My dad works at the insect museum. He introduced me to insects at an early age, so I know a lot about them. When I heard about an important school project to check butterfly numbers, I knew I should take part. My schoolmates and I tried different ways to attract butterflies to the garden. We planted the kinds of flowers they like, and we also hung up small bowls of fruit for them to feed on. Actually, it was where all the butterflies went, rather than to the flowers. And when it was sunny, they stayed in the garden area but flew away whenever children came around. During the project, we had to spend 30 minutes in the garden every morning. Other students noted down the butterflies they saw, and then I used helpful butterfly posters to name them. As expected, we saw lots of white butterflies. But then a small blue butterfly appeared — which I’d really wanted to note on my list immediately! We did a good job this year. It was fantastic to take part!
