For humankind, evidence for life beyond earth is unlikely to be as dramatic as an alien spaceship landing next to the Eiffel Tower in Paris. It is more likely to come from telescope observations of a faraway planet with atmospheric chemicals of biological activity. Researchers said methane (甲烷) may be the first detectable sign of life out of earth if discovered in the atmosphere of a rocky planet orbiting in the “habitable zone”.
Scientists are working to understand the indicators of life — biosignatures (生命信号) — that might be present in observations of planets in other solar systems, called exoplanets (系外行星), knowing that increasingly capable telescopes soon will be available. The researchers showed that much atmospheric methane could be a persuasive sign of life. Methane is an important trace gas in Earth’s atmosphere. Unlike other potential biosignatures such as oxygen, methane is one of the few gases that should be readily detectable using the Webb Space Telescope.
On Earth, the vast majority of methane is produced by life: methane producing microbes (微生物) in wetlands, rice fields or in the dead body of large animals. Methane is also generated through human activities such as burning fusel fuels including coal and oil. The percent of Earth’s non-biologically generated methane is miniscule.
Scientists are expecting greater insight into exoplanet atmospheres using Webb and other new telescopes, examining their chemistry from the perspective of Earth.
Oxygen, more plentiful in Earth’s atmosphere than methane, is another potential biosignature. It is also fed into Earth’s atmosphere via biological processes. But oxygen could avoid Webb’s detection.
“We know life on Earth has been producing methane for essentially its entire history, and atmospheric methane concentrations may have been high on the early Earth, before there was oxygen in the atmosphere,” Krissansen-Totton said. “But it’s important to note that the diversity of planetary environments elsewhere is probably vast, and there could be other non-biological methane making producing processes that no one has yet considered.”
4. What can we know about methane according to paragraph 2
A. It might exist in many exoplanets.
B. It can be detected by Webb Space Telescope.
C. Many living things can’t live without it.
D. Scientists haven’t found its secrets completely.
5. Which of the following best explains “miniscule” underlined in paragraph 3
A. Small. B. Special. C. More. D. Moderate.
6. What can we infer from Krissansen-Totton’s words
A. Methane can’t show the sign of life in exoplanets fully.
B. It’s likely that methane appeared later than oxygen did.
C. Scientists should prove methane existence in exoplanets.
D. Methane is most likely to appear in many exoplanets.
7. What can be a suitable title for the text
A. Scientists have found life signs in exoplanets
B. Methane is an important gas in the universe
C. Methane may be the key to detecting alien life
D. Scientists think it hard to find methane in exoplanets
【答案】4 B 5. A 6. A 7. C

根据第二段中“Unlike other potential biosignatures such as oxygen, methane is one of the few gases that should be readily detectable using the Webb Space Telescope. (与氧气等其他潜在的生物特征不同,甲烷是少数几种可以被韦伯太空望远镜探测到的气体之一)”可知,通过第二段中我们可以了解到甲烷是可以被韦伯太空望远镜探测到的气体。故选B项。
【5题详解】
词句猜测题。根据第三段中“On Earth, the vast majority of methane is produced by life: methane producing microbes (微生物) in wetlands, rice fields or in the dead body of large animals. Methane is also generated through human activities such as burning fusel fuels including coal and oil.(在地球上,绝大多数甲烷是由生命产生的:由湿地、稻田或大型动物的尸体中的微生物产生的甲烷。甲烷也可以通过人类活动产生,比如燃烧煤和石油等燃料)”以及最后一段中“But it’s important to note that the diversity of planetary environments elsewhere is probably vast, and there could be other non-biological methane making producing processes that no one has yet considered. (但重要的是要注意到,其他地方的行星环境可能是多样性的,可能还有其他没有人考虑过的非生物甲烷产生过程)”可知,地球上绝大数甲烷都是由生命产生,以及最后一段中的转折说明在其他行星可能有非生物甲烷的生产过程。由此推知,划线词miniscule与small“小的”意思接近。故选A项。
【6题详解】
推理判断题。根据最后一段中“But it’s important to note that the diversity of planetary environments elsewhere is probably vast, and there could be other non-biological methane making producing processes that no one has yet considered. (但重要的是要注意到,其他地方的行星环境可能是多样性的,可能还有其他没有人考虑过的非生物甲烷产生过程)”可推知,甲烷不能完全显示系外行星上存在生命的迹象。故选A项。
【7题详解】
主旨大意题。根据文章大意以及第一段中“Researchers said methane may be the first detectable sign of life out of earth if discovered in the atmosphere of a rocky planet orbiting in the “habitable zone”. (研究人员表示,如果在围绕“宜居带”运行的岩石行星的大气层中发现甲烷,那么甲烷可能是第一个可检测到的地球外生命的迹象)”可知,文章最适合的标题可为“甲烷可能是探测外星生命的关键”。故选C项。

Going against the tide of flocking(蜂拥) to well-known yet generally jam-packed tourist destinations on vacation, a growing number of holiday makers in China tend to spend their leisure time at lesser known resorts to seek unique, relaxed holiday experiences. Reverse Tourism has emerged as a new trend among young holidaymakers in China.
Besides crowds, some vacationers chose less-traveled places to save on the cost of trips to popular destinations, which often require pricey tickets, meals and hotel stays. “Tourism used to be about sightseeing. Now it is about experiences,” said Dai Bin, president of the China Tourism Academy. He said popular tourist spots are always packed and often raise their prices during holidays. As people become more mature travelers, they are increasingly unwilling to follow the herd. Some of them are simply looking to take a rest somewhere quiet for a couple of days, which is a good way to vacation.
In addition, lesser-known attractions are not as “commercial” and “standardized” as developed ones and are able to offer more genuine experiences and natural encounters, according to social media posts. And unlike popular destinations, some under-explored places with little online exposure can offer more surprises. COVID- 19 is another key factor fueling Reverse Tourism. As precautionary measures continue, traveling has an unpredictable quality. A traveler has no way of knowing what lies ahead before departure, be it a perfect holiday or one interrupted by a sudden outbreak.
“The rise of Reverse Tourism is not a bad thing,” said an opinion piece in Zhengzhou Daily. It means that vacationers now have more options, which brings more possibilities to the tourism market, the article explains. More importantly, the trend is set to force popular destinations to improve themselves instead of resting on their achievements, it noted.
8. What is the feature of Reverse Tourism according to the passage
A. Popular destinations often raise their prices during holidays.
B. Less-traveled places offer relaxed holiday experiences.
C. Popular destinations are not welcomed by people nowadays.
D. Less-traveled places are increasingly valued among young people.
9. What does the underlined expression “follow the herd” mean in paragraph 2
A. Do just what most people do. B. Be particular about vacations.
C. Behave like the best visitors. D. Seek unique travel experience.
10. Why do people choose lesser-known attractions based on social media posts
A. To create surprises on their own. B. To explore the original beauty.
C. To promote the local tourism. D. To escape the uncertainty in life.
11. What is the text mainly about
A. The promising future of Chinese tourism.
B. The challenges popular tourist spots are facing.
C. The way to explore the lesser-known attractions.
D. The reason why people prefer Reverse Tourism.
【答案】8. D 9. A 10. B 11. D

Although the word workaholic usually has a negative meaning, it is sometimes used by people wishing to express their devotion to their career positively. The “work” in question is usually associated with a paying job, but it may also refer to independent pursuits such as sports. A workaholic in the negative sense is popularly characterized by a neglect of family and other social relations. Similarly, people considered to be workaholics tend to lose track of time.
Workaholism is an addiction, and it’s not the same as working hard. Experts say the continuous work-related activity masks anxiety, low self-esteem, and privacy problems. Workaholics feel the urge of being busy all the time, to the point that they often perform tasks that aren’t required or necessary for project completion. As a result, they tend to be inefficient workers, since they focus on being busy, instead of focusing on being productive. In addition, workaholics tend to be less effective than other workers because it’s difficult for them to work as part of a team, they have trouble entrusting co-workers, or they take on so much that they aren’t as organized as others. Workaholics are occupied with work all the time, which prevents them from maintaining healthy relationships, hobbies, or even take measures to protect their health.
As with addictions to alcohol, drugs or gambling, Workaholics’ harmful behavior will continue despite advice from loved ones or danger signs such as worsening relationships. Poor health is another warning sign. Because there’s less of social shame attached to workaholism than to other addictions, health symptoms can easily go unrecognized. In the US and Canada, workaholism remains what it’s always been: the so-called “respectable addiction” that’s dangerous as any other. Workaholism in Japan is considered a serious social problem leading to early death, often on the job, a phenomenon called karōshi(过劳死).
As with other psychological addictions, workaholics often cannot see that they have a problem. Reasoning the workaholic out of the problem will generally be met with denial. Co-workers, family members and friends may need to communicate the effects of the workaholic’s behavior to them. Indeed, mental treatment to cure a workaholic can successfully reduce the hours spent on the job, while increasing the person’s productivity. Studies show that fully recovered former workaholics can accomplish in 50 hours what they previously couldn’t do in 80.
12. Sometimes people use “workaholism” in a positive way just because_________.
A. workaholics work extra hours
B. workaholics pay little attention to their family members
C. workaholics seem to be buried in their work
D. workaholics work hard just to flatter their employers
13. In the writer’s opinion, ________.
A. workaholics take work as a solution to the settlement of the troubles in their life
B. workaholics aim at keeping themselves occupied instead of accomplishing their work
C. workaholics like to work in teams because they believe in their co-workers
D. workaholics enjoy lots of hobbies and are able to keep themselves healthy.
14. Which of the following is wrong according to the passage
A. It is difficult for workaholics to overcome this addiction.
B. Workaholics even shorten their lives if they do not get rid of this addiction.
C. Workaholics’ poor health can easily be identified.
D. Treating workaholics mentally turns out to be successful in many cases.
15. What can be the best title for this passage
A. Team--spirit B. Hard-working employees
C. Workaholism D. Success via work
【答案】12. C 13. B 14. C 15. C

【14题详解】
细节理解题。根据第三段“Because there’s less of social shame attached to workaholism than to other addictions, health symptoms can easily go unrecognized. (因为与其他上瘾行为相比,工作狂的社会羞耻感更少,所以健康症状很容易被忽视)”可知,工作狂健康状况容易被忽视。所以工作狂的健康问题很容易被发现这句话是错误的。故选C。

47. 阅读下面材料,根据其内容和所给段落开头语续写两段,使之构成一篇完整的短文。
The frightening day of our diving test was here. Our parents thought we were lucky to have an Olympic-size swimming pool at the school. My mom stressed that the swimming pool was one of the best in our city. But I didn’t feel happy about it at all. Instead, I felt afraid of the swimming pool. It was mainly because I was terribly shy.
I was so shy that I always sat at the back of the room in class so I’d not be called upon to read. As for the present physical education class each Monday morning, I would work my way to the back of the line forming at the diving board so I would not have to practice the dives.
Now, it was another Monday morning - the morning of our diving test. My blood ran cold when the teacher Ms. Robbins announced that we would be graded for our final on the most difficult dive- the jackknife. And she added, “This diving test is important. The one who fails has to spare time in the following Monday mornings to practice diving in this swimming pool and attend this test again.”
My body kept shaking with fear as the line to the scary diving board shortened. As I watched, each student seemed to perform the challenging dive effortlessly. And shortly I would have to attempt something that I had never even practiced before.
Then I remembered someone telling me that when you picture yourself doing a skill over and over, it’s just as effective as physically practicing that skill. So I watched carefully as each classmate jumped at the end of the board once, added a jump for height, folded their body in half to reach for their toes, and finally straightened out like an arrow for going into the water. After carefully watching for a while, I was actually in a state of surprise, because all of a sudden I realized that it was possible for me to perform these four steps of diving.
Eventually all classmates except me finished jumping The teacher announced that it was my turn.
注意:1. 续与词数应为150左右;
2. 请按如下格式在答题卡的相应位置作答。
With my heart knocking wildly, I walked down the diving board towards its end.

______________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________
【答案】One possible version:
With my heart knocking wildly, I walked down the diving board towards its end. Looking down, I found all my classmates were looking up at me. My face suddenly felt hot. Finally, I ignored them. Picturing the four steps of diving, I jumped. Then I folded my body but failed to reach for my toes. And instead of entering the water like an arrow, I fell into the water, with my body being flat. As a result, it caused a huge sound, which made all the classmates burst out laughing.
Knowing I failed, I climbed out of the pool, embarrassed. After class, Ms. Robbins comforted and encouraged me. In the following many Monday mornings, I practiced again and again under her guidance. Gradually, I became more confident and less shy. Finally, I attended the diving test again and performed well. This time, my classmates cheered and clapped. I was so glad. I knew my success resulted from my beating my shyness and my hard practice.

B It’s likely that methane appeared later than oxygen did.
C. Scientists should prove methane existence in exoplanets.
D. Methane is most likely to appear in many exoplanets.
7 What can be a suitable title for the text
A. Scientists have found life signs in exoplanets
B. Methane is an important gas in the universe
C. Methane may be the key to detecting alien life
D. Scientists think it hard to find methane in exoplanets

Workaholism is an addiction and it’s not the same as working hard.

Eventually all classmates except me finished jumping. The teacher announced that it was my turn.
